Cannot write to other internal drive after OS reinstall

I replaced my main internal drive and reinstalled Snow Leopard. Now when I try to create a folder on the other internal drive I can only create one on the root of the other non primary drives If I try to create a folder on the non root folder the new folder option is gone or if I try to create with a program it will not allow me
Looking at the permissions it shows Admin with Read/write and the others with Read only. I am signed on as admin but still cannot create a folder
Suggestions ?

I'd check to see what the ACLs are (in terminal):
Type "ls -le " then drag the folder into terminal window.
Also, you can check flags that may be set.
Type: "ls -lO " then drag the folder into terminal.

  • Boot from external Firewire Drive-cannot repair or optimize internal drive.

    Hi all
Connected my new 300 GB Seagate External Firewire Hard Drive today.
Installed Tiger from DVD. Updated to 10.4.3.
Installed Tech Tool Pro 4. Updated to 4.1.1.
    Booted from External Firewire Drive.
Disk Utility cannot Verify or Repair internal drive. Does not say or do anything.
Tech Tool Pro cannot repair volume or optimize. Says, "Cannot Unmount Volume."
Is there a fix for this?
    Thank you for the help!

eMac 800 nVidia.   Mac OS X (10.4.3)   160 GB Internal HD. Pioneer Superdrive. 1 GB RAM.

    Hi
I did name the new external completely different from the internal.
After booting from the external Firewire Hard Drive, I tried running Disk Utility and Tech Tool Pro from both drives. No matter which drive I run the Utilities from the same things happen every time...
Nothing happens when trying to use Disk Utility to Verify Volume on internal eMac Drive.
Tech Tool Pro says, "Cannot unmount volume" when trying to check Volume or Optimize internal drive.

  • Putting OS X on other internal drives

I have a 250 and a 400 gig internal drive in addition to the 250 that came with the machine. I want to install OS X on each drive but seem unable to, I insert the disk but it says it cannot be used on this machine. I tried holding down the option key, the "C" key and changing the start-up disk but nothing works.
    Anyone have any suggestions

If you are using a set of Mac OS X installation disks other than the ones which shipped with your Mac Pro, you can't use them to install Mac OS X, as those disks do not have the necessary resources to start up your machine. Another option if you want two or more copies of the version of Mac OS X which came with the machine is to use this application to clone your current Mac OS X system onto the other drives.

  • Mac pro losing internal drives after GPU upgrade

I've recently added a PC style 3GB graphics card (NVIDIA GeForce GTX 660) to my early 2008 8 core mac pro.
Apart from living without the boot logo, this has worked very nicely...
But since then I've had some clicking/chirping noises, especially when running graphics intensive apps (e.g. Video editing, some 3D heavy games), and have subsequently lost one of my four internal drives (my iTunes media library), and another drive regularly 'ejects' during these periods.
Is this liable to just be drives failing, or possibly a psu issue, to do with powering this new card?
Has anyone else had issues running 4 internal drives, with a video card like this?
Any thoughts/suggestions would be welcome, thanks!

Beg your pardon, I've just checked again, and the card does just use a 6pin connector. Sorry got confused.
The card lists its minimum requirements as a 450W psu with min 24 amps on the +12V rail (based on i7 3.2 machine)
Does that narrow things down at all? For the record, with only 2 drives mounted at the moment, I still get the odd click from the machine when under some graphics load. Thanks for the replies.

  • Cannot Copy files to net drive after migration to OS X 10.6.3

Hi i using a MacBookPro, in a local network, which uses some network drives on a NAS (Seagate Black Amor NAS 220), which was running without problems for the last 6 month (at least with OS X 10.6.2) without problems.
The network drive is connected by smb://SERVER-NAME and user-id and password.
The user on the NAS drive has full rights.
After the upgrade to OS X 10.6.3 i observing serios problems with the access to the net drives.
The net drive is still visible and i can read all volumes and files.
But if i try to copy a files to the net drive, then i get the following error:
My english trasnlation of the message:
The action could not completed, because you have not the necessary access rights.
    (Original message in german:
Die Aktion konnte nicht abgeschlossen werden, da Sie für einige Objekte nicht die
    erforderlichen Zugriffsrechte haben.)
I get this error message for nearly all files (jpg, pdf, dmg, ...).
Just some files (txt) will be copied.
All access rights are fine and no file is locked or anything else.
Some of these files could be copied a few days before (with OS X 10.6.2) without problems.
So it seams, that there is a possible bug in OS X 10.6.3.
Could someone help me with this problem ?

    Hi,
I have almost same problem since Snow Leopard..
this is my case. you may refer to enclosed link for screen capture
    1) I use Command + Shift + 4 to do screen captures. and I try to copy the screen capture png to my NAS, it failed.
    2) I just right click and compress my files to make a Archive.zip and copy to NAS... it is success
    3) I extract the zip file from NAS folder, it works also
it brings alot of trouble to me...
and i have another case which has same problem...
I directly edit photos in my SD Card by Photoshop and try to copy to NAS.... Failed also. all other photos in my SD card without any editing can be copy to NAS without any error.
I guess.. Snow Leopard added some additional ACL or attributes to my files which leads to file cannot be copy to NAS..
I wish Apple can fix it problem as soon as possible

  • Cannot install DVD/CD ROM drive after upgrading from Windows 7

I had a working DVD/CD-ROM drive before upgrading. Now it shows as Unknown Device in Device Manager, I tried uninstalling it and then scanned for hardware changes but it still does not work. I also tried manually selecting a CD-ROM drive for it but it
ends up with an error code 31. I also checked for {4d36e965-e325-11ce-bfc1-08002be10318} registry but it did not have lowerfilters key. How do I install the driver for it?

    Hi,
The error code 31 means that Windows cannot load the drivers required for this device.
Considering that this issue mostly can be caused by compatible issue.
Please check if you can fine the latest driver from Manufacturer’s website. If so, try to install it under Windows 10 compatibility mode: Right click the installer of the driver, choose Properties, choose Windows 7 under Compatibility
    mode to install.
If the CD device still fails to work, I recommend to check the setupapi.dev.log under %windir%\inf, locate the device and find the line below:
    dvi:             Rank         - 0x00000000
Then, corresponds the score in this link:
    Identifier Score
    http://msdn.microsoft.com/en-us/library/windows/hardware/ff546297(v=vs.85).aspx
The value 0x00003000 is the best identifier score and the value 0x00003FFF is the worst identifier score.
The score near 0x00003FFF means that the driver and device may not compatible with current system, we may need to wait for the menufacturer’s driver update.
    Thanks for your understanding.

  • Cannot Delete Picture from Hard Drive After "Chang...

    Steps to reproduce:
    1. Go to a dialog where you can "Change Picture" of a chat group or your profile.
    2. Click on "Change Picture".
    3. Select "Other".
    4. You will get prompted to upload a picture, go ahead and do that.
    5. Picture successfully uploaded.
    6. Now delete the picture you uploaded from the system/hard drive. Make sure not just putting it into the trash but empty the trash as well.
    7. The system will complain that the picture is still in use and the picture isn't deleted.
If I restart my Skype then I am able delete the picture. I'm guess Skype didn't relinquish the picture file when it finished uploading. I checked "Open Files and Ports" from Activity Monitor and saw Skype was still had the picture file open.

I'm having the same issue. I've tried everything to delete the movie rentals from my hard drive. I even called apple customer support & technical support who could not help.
How did you fix your issue? My movies are located in the correct folder. I've even tried windows command prompt & safe mode deletes. I want my hard drive space back!

  • Mounting drives after server reinstall

    Hi,
I am about to reinstall/upgrade my server. I have had a problem several times in the past, where I have done this, and then am not able to mount the old drives. Whenever I have reinstalled Mac OS X Server (10.4.1), the arrays will show up properly, but will not mount, unless I "make drive available for use", which of course deletes everything. Has anyone encountered this problem before?
    Thanks,
    J

jealma wrote:I know the solution to the /dev/loop-problem. The new 2.6.25 kernel has the loop device as a module. Please try a `modprobe loop`, that gives you a /dev/loop. I don't know whether that will be persistent after a reboot, so you may need to add "loop" to the modules-list in /etc/rc.conf.
That worked, but I still have other issues with cd mounting, so I downgraded my kernel for now.

  • T41 - All 'Other Devices' disabled after XP reinstall

    Hi,
    Could someone please help.
    I have a laptop T41 / Type: 2372 / Model: 4PG...... running Win XP Pro
At the weekend I reinstalled the Operating System using MS XP Pro discs which I last installed on this PC about 18 months ago.
I immediately noticed after the install that I couldn't connect to the internet.  When I went to device manager I spotted that everything under 'other devices' was disabled (Ethernet Controller, Network Controller, PCI Modem, Unknown Device, Video Controller).
I also noticed there is nothing under Network Connections and when i try to make a connection, it fails (because the 'other devices' are disabled I guess).
I went onto the 'Drivers and Downloads' Lenovo page and installed everything that relates to my PC (as above) but this made no difference.
Can anyone point me in the right direction as I have been suffering for hours and hours on this issue?
    Many thanks
    /David.
    Solved!

Hi and welcome to the forum!
Installing lenovo drivers for older machines can be tricky one, because each driver needs to be run twice from separate places in order to successfully install the device.
Assuming you've run the setup for the mentioned devices, for:-
    1. Ethernet, you need to go to C:\DRIVERS\Win\ETHERNET\PRO1000\Win32 to run the setup.
    2. Network Controller, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\WLLANINT\SETUP.EXE
    3. Video Controller, C:\DRIVERS\WIN\DISPLAY\SETUP.EXE
And according to lenovo's resources, the correct Type and Model for your ThinkPad is 2373-4PG.
    Hope this helps.

  • Can no longer copy files between internal drives or from burned DVD's

This just started today as far as I can tell. We have 4 dual 2.7GHz G5's running 10.4.4. Two of them seem to work as normal. The other two won't let me drag/copy files from one of the internal drives to the desktop or the other internal.
We have two internal drives, the one with OSX on it that works fine as in I can copy/drag files to the other internal drive (labeled "AV") or to the desktop. The AV drive won't let me copy/drag any files to the desktop or the other internal, I get the circle with a line through it. Also when I burn a DVD I can't copy/drag the files anywhere on any drive. If I put a previously burned disk (burned prior to today) in I can copy it fine to any drive.
I have verified/repaired all disks, repaired permissions, and checked read&write permissions.
    Any help?

OK, I figured it out (I'll admit to being a Mac n00b). I was using DVD+R's. So the act of trying to copy files from a DVD+R (even though it was burned in the same G5) changes something in the drives so nothing on them will copy.
Ejecting the DVD+R and restarting without the disk in it got it back to normal. The problem was reproduced when I tried the DVD+R again (just to confirm the issue and solution). Again a restart fixed it.
Moral of the story, don't use DVD+R in Macs even though they can burn to them.
Anyway, if anything hope this post can help other n00bies.

  • Moving iTunes Media folder to second internal drive fails

    The whole story is:
I never really used the iTunes media folder system. All my music is on extrenal drive and I was only importing it into iTunes manually to keep my own folder system, for example once a week Ive created a folder with a date of creating and there I had all the releases from that week (some in their own folder or separately but all in this one folder named by a dat eof creation). So on my ext. drive I have lots of these folders by date. And the names of folder always correspond with the date added to iTunes as well
My ext. drive is full now. so Ive decided to take a next step and put out the dvd-rom and put another internal drive (1TB) into my macbook pro which will be used for music and movie data only (the system stays on the old one).
What I want to do now is somehow move all these music folder to my new internal drive, so they can be accessed from iTunes without reseting all its features.
Ive read that one solution can be creating the new iTunes Media folder on that new drive and Consolidate all music from iTunes to this location. Problem is I cant even try it, because when go to iTunes Preferences to change the location of Media folder a hit Create after selectin the new location (new internal drive) after fee seconds the progress freezes and Activity Monitor says that iTunes are not responding. Ive tried to leave it for about half an hour and no changes, even tho theres not much to copy/move cause the Media folder has no music in it, only playlists etc.
So question number one is - why its freezing?
Question number two - any other way to trasfer all my collection and keep its organiation as it is without loosing the iTunes list and be able to use it after transfer?
Thanks in advance for your help and tips

    Not sure about question 1...
What I think you should do is try to copy the existing iTunes library folder from <User's Music>/iTunes to <1Tb Drive>/iTunes then hold down option as you start iTunes. You should be asked to choose or create a library. Click choose and browse to the library file at <1Tb Drive>/iTunes/iTunes Library.itl (BTW if the the .itl extension is missing you should probably add it match the current format, but it will work either way).
The new copy of the library should work just as before, but check a few random things first, you can always revert to the previous library with option-start-iTunes if it doesn't work.
Under iTunes > Library > Orgainze Library if the option is available tick Reorganize files in the folder <Media Folder>. This will make sure the new version of your library is as portable as possible. Next under preferences > Advanced make sure that the media folder is given as <1Tb Drive>/iTunes/iTunes Media. If needed you can change this value. If you change the folder at this point iTunes should offer to copy your existing media into this new location. That ought to work, thought it will take some time. Alternatively you decline the offer and then selectively consolidate the library in batches, e.g. by selecting the tracks of all Artists beginning with A, and consolidating just those tracks, then repeasting with, B, C etc. followed by other types of media. If iTunes didn't prompt, or the folder was already correct, you can decide whether to try in batches or use iTunes > Library > Organize Library > Consolidate files.

  • Unable to install on 2nd internal drive

I have 2 internal hard drives, the startup drive only has 19 GB capacity and only 1 GB left so I am trying to change the startup to my other internal drive which is 150GB. I tried to intall the OS onto the 150GB drive by restarting with installation cd and holding C, but it says that it cannot boot from that drive. Can anyone help me with this problem?

You can use a backup program like SuperDuper and clone your small drive onto the larger drive. It works flawlessly for me.

  • Could both my internal drives be going bad at once?

i posted an issue a moment ago about a write protection warning, which has never happened. so i run disk utility on this particular drive - and it stops half way through with a random error!
ok, so i start dumping files onto my other internal drive like a mad man. and what do you know? when i try and open the particular folder on the backup drive which holds the data i just copied over, my system stalls for about 10 seconds and then apparently restarts my finder!
could it be that both my drives are going bad at once? what could be causing this madness. i ran disk utility on the backup drive and it went without a hitch, but solved nothing.
    please help!

Save your contents of your user folders to a external drive that you know that works in addition to the other internal. Especially your iTunes folder and User/name/Library/Safari & Mail folders contents.
You might have something going wrong with your boot drive, it could be a bad sector, a bad OS install, corrupted OS file who the heck knows, but it's looking like your going to need to Erase with Zero option in DU (to eliminate bad sectors) and reinstall Tiger fresh, use your same name, drive name and password, update, install apps from fresh sources (don't use Migration Assistant, doesn't do copy protection and copies blindly) and copy those folders mentioned above back to the same location.
If that doesn't work, it could be a mechanical problem, which the drive needs to be replaced under warranty or AppleCare. Give them a call and they can send you a new one and you can replace it yourself, holding your CC hostage until they receive the bad one.
Later once your back up and running, learn to clone your boot drive to a external drive just for cases like this. It's boot-able, you can fix the original drive, you can copy files over and just erase and reverse clone.
It will save your bacon. Read my text docs.
    http://homepage.mac.com/hogfish
Oh if you do a fresh install, might as well do Tiger and iLife 06 in the process.

  • Will Time Machine back up iTunes media  on a different internal drive

I have my iTunes media on a different internal drive.
Will Time machine back up that data as well?
I have two other internal drives, each 750gb.
Does Time Machine back those drives up as well? Or does it contain itself to the OS disk?

    Stephen,
Amazingly, Time Machine will do this by default!! In fact, Time Machine will back up every volume that is present at the time of the initial backup, unless told to do otherwise. I keep my iTunes and iPhoto libraries on a secondary partition of my MBP's hard drive, and Time Machine backed that up automatically.
Your backup will be contained in a "Backups.backupdb" folder on whatever external volume you choose to use for Time Machine. Within this folder, you will find other folders named for the various volumes that are being backed up. As far as I know, there is no limit to how many can be kept.
    Scott
