Canon 1Ds MK3 & Lightroom

When will Adobe issue the update to enable Canon 1Ds MK3 raw files to be imported into Lightroom?

Lee;
I hate to sound pessimistic, but what kind of value can you put in a highly parsed statement like the one to which you linked?
This is a *response to a blog comment*. Hardly a formal statement of policy. It is not even clear if the comment applies to *all* adobe products, or just CS3 and RAW. We can certainly *infer* this applies to lightroom. . . .but that is all we can do.
I would like to thank you for linking to this blog. This thread was very interesting. The adobe crew has quite the task laid out for them. Not only do they have to fix the V1.0 release (with all the warts we have been talking about), but they have to keep up with pace of technology. i.e.; the release of Vista and the RAW 4.1. Hopefully, "bug fixes" and "code optimization" have not taken second seat to the technology updates.
But the bottom line is simple: Four monthes and Adobe is not even confident enough to announce *timing* for an update.

  • Import problems with Canon 1Ds Mk3 raw pictures

Lightroom 2 does not recognize any raw files from my 1Ds Mk3 - says "found no files to import". It does recognize jpg, though. Lightroom acceps raw pictures from my other camera body, the Canon 1 D Mk3.
Any pictures imported from these cameras are upside down in the import preview mode but correct after import. The same goes for my Canon G10 camera as well. This upside down phenomena was not any problem with LR 1 - came with the release of LR2.
    Any suggestions out there?

The problems occur only when importing directly from the cameras
    Windows Vista Ultimate 32 bits
I'm not trying to be a smart a**, but don't do that! When you d/l from a camera, the OS gets involved in ways that it doesn't when it's seeing merely an external drive, as it does when you use a card reader.
If you have to d/l from the camera, put them into a directory, then disconnect, then Import.

  • Lost camera raw support for canon 1ds markI in mountain lion

I seem to have lost system support for camera raw files for the original Canon 1ds (what you might call the markI). There's been two recent raw support updates, and I'm not sure if it occured with the first for those two updates or with update to Mountain Lion itself (which I recently clean-installed). I noticed it after the first raw support update (Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 4.01) but it could have happend with Mountain Lion install and I just didn't notice. In any case, I definitely don't have support for the camera raw files, finder shows only the generic TIFF icon thumnail (the raw files from the markI 1ds were of the extension .TIF, before canon moved on to .cr2 format..). Preview and Aperture can preview the file but without any custom white balance or other info stored with the raw file from camera.
Anybody else experience this or know fix?
    Thanks!
For anyone wanting and willing to test on their machine, I'll post a link to a test raw file.... hmm, apparently this support forum does not allow for the linclusion of a link to an image file, but I'll see if it allows for a link to a zipped folder with image inside... I suppose I wouldn't download a .zip file myself but for anyone braver than I:

    Lane,
That latest raw update also shows supported devices. The EOS-1Ds is still shown as supported by Mountain Lion in the knowledge base article that accompanies it. Bump!
I wonder if using Disk Utility and verify/fix permissions may restore your RAW capability.
    Don't have Aperture or Lightroom.
I installed the recent raw updates into 10.8.2. The DB5W2360.TIF file has a generic Preview icon. Graphic Converter 8.3.1 opens .cr2 files, and it opened this TIF file nicely as well. GC is willing to modify white balance with a condition that it cannot be done in place, and must be exported to a different format.
    Not much help, I know.

  • After 1.2.1 Firmware update cannot tether with Aperture 3 and Canon 5D Mk3

I am now unable to tether my laptop with my Canon 5D Mk3 in Aperture 3.4.4 after I updated the firware on the camera. Aperture detects the camera but the capture button is greyed out. And when I press any buttons on the camera, it says it is busy. Note: I am able to tether camera and laptop using Lightroom 4.
    Using:
    MacBook Pro, Mac OS 10.8.3
    Aperture 3.4.4

  • Why is it suddenly impossible to import raw files from my canon 1ds mark III? I work with a mac 5. Nothing has been changed in the settings...

I've been working for 2 years with Lightroom and importing pictures from my canon 1ds mark III
Suddenly it doesn't work. Can somebody explain this or help me to change something
so I can import my photos???

As DJ suggests, that's probably not the exact wording. Can we have that, please?
Still need your OS and Lightroom version too.

  • Settings for sharpening 1ds MK3 files

Can anyone recommend sharpening settings in Aperture for 1ds mk3 files. Canon has recommended sharpening settings for PS but does not provide them for Aperture or other software.
    Thanks

I leave the RAW conversion settings as-is. For edge sharpening I often leave as-is but sometimes increase the amount. I rarely touch the radius or falloff.

  • Problems with opening Canon 1ds III .CR2 files in CS 3

I have just purchased Photoshop CS3 student edition. However, when I try to open .CR2 files from my Canon 1ds III, a message stating that Photoshop "could not complete my request as it is not the right kind of document" appears. Whilst I can get round this by saving from DPP (which does not allow me to transfer the .CR2 files directly to Photoshop) as TIFF, this is quite slow.
Has anyone experienced a similar problem? Help on finding a cure would be much appreciated.

    Stephen,
Make sure you've got the latest version of Camera Raw. The package you have is probably compiled before the Mk3 was out.

  • Canon 1DS Mark III

Does Aperture support the newly released Canon 1DS Mark III (which is different from the 1D Mark III)?

    welcome to the forum ...
unfortunately no one will/can tell you when it will come ... you will have to be patient or as you say change to Lightroom ...
it will come when it comes ... and as you can see in the D3/D300 thread (as well as the 40D threads of past months) no amount of clamouring in this forum will change the way apple communicates about aperture ...
please use the feedback to request support ...

  • I am trying to import CR2 files from my canon 450D.  Lightroom 5 won't let me. Help please!!

I am trying to import CR2 files from my canon 450D into Lightroom 5.  Lightroom says 'preview unavailable for this file'.  I cannot get past this.  I have tried importing directly from the camera, and also from an external hard drive that I managed to download the photos onto.  I am new to Lightroom so any simple suggestions would be greatly appreciated!!  Also I am working on a Mac.  Thanks!

I have a 450D and the files open just fine in LR5.
Is this your first attempt at using LR or your first attempt at developing CR2 files?
It sounds like your raw files may be corrupted or there is some permission problem that is preventing LR from reading the files.
Can you upload one of these unrecognized files to http://www.dropbox.com/ and post a public download link to it, for others to test?
Also try copying just one CR2 file to your internal drive and see if that imports, in case there is some problem with the permissions on the external drive.  Just use Finder to copy the file, not LR, in case that is an issue.

  • Canon 1Ds Mark II CR2 files -- Aperture vs. CS2 Raw

    Hi Gang,
I can tell I'm going to be frequent flier here for a while as I experiment with Aperture. This forum is a great resource.
A question for other users of the Canon 1Ds Mark II (or other canon models for that matter). Compared to the CS2 Raw converter, which has been my converter to-date, I'm finding two things:
    1. Lots of noise coming out of Aperture! It takes the form of image-wide color noise, appearing in both subtle color fields and patterned areas. I know this topic has been covered at length here and I'm finding that the noise reduction controls, combined with CS2's noise reduction filter, can solve the problem. However, it is still somewhat distressing -- particularly when it happens on ISO 100 shots.
    2. The second issue is actually advantageous, although I'm not sure why it's happening. My conversions out of Aperture appear much richer and warmer than those coming out of CS2. It's very pleasing, but baffling. In comparison to the CS2 conversions, the Aperture versions seem much more vibrant, as if the color saturation has been bumped up and the contrast deepened. My attempts to replicate this using the CS2 controls have been unsuccessful, even though I'm a pretty sophisticated user of that tool.
I haven't shot film in years, but I can only describe the results out of Aperture as more "film-like". I almost feel as though CS2 has a leveling effect on the RAW data, working too hard to interpret the data to produce even exposure and color values across the image. Aperture seems to leave more of the data intact, producing a result that is closer to how the image was actually lit and shot.
Curious to know whether anyone has had similar results between the two tools.
    Thanks in advance.

On item one, it would be good to revisit your tests after 1.1 has come out - they are supposed to have improved the base RAW conversion for many cameras, and Canon I think in particualr since there have been lots of similar reports about noise.
But the second feature that will make things better even if the raw conversion were no better is the ability to fine-tune conversion parameters per-image. So if something is coming out noisy, you can turn up the noise reduction in conversion as opposed to using the noise reduction tool which can rather soften an image if applied too liberally.
As to the second point, I have seen reports from others there as well (including Rob Galbraith) saying that already colors from Aperture are better than many other converters - there was an article some time ago going into how much time the Aperture team went into making color rendtion as good as it could possibly be, I think to the exclusion of lots of other things. So when other aspects of the RAW conversion like detail, noise and sharpness have improved enough people I think will generally be really happy with the Aperture conversion and opinions will change quickly.
I think it's kind of interesting that until now very few RAW converters have been put to the kind of scrutiny that Aperture has been put through, certainly the first few versions of ACR were not looked at that closley by a wide audience. This will be great in the long run for all tools as improved Aperture conversions could fire off a real push across all the RAW conversion tools for improved quality. Bibble in my mind is the first out of the gate by improving not only the converter but also adding Noise Ninja and some lens correction tools.

  • Cr2 files from canon 1d-mk3

does anyone know how to import cr2 files directly from a canon 1d-mk3 into aperture. that is, without first batching photos in dpp to tiff/jpeg, but directly sending the cr2 material from camera to aperture?if you have the answer, please email to [email protected], but by all means post it as well.

    Photoshop Elements 11, you mean?
The 70D requires Camera Raw 8.2 or later
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
8.2 is only compatible with Elements 12 or later
    http://helpx.adobe.com/x-productkb/global/camera-raw-compatible-applications.html
    Either
    upgrade to Elements 12, or
Download the free Adobe DNG converter, convert all the Raw files from the 70D to DNGs then open the DNGs in Elements 11

It isn't on the list of supported cameras, but I don't know if that list has been updated. According to what is published, there is no tethered support for your camera.
