Canon 2ti Help

I need some help with night time car photos:
Equipment I have: Canon T2i, 18-55mm lens, 55-250mm lens, wireless remote and tripod. I like shooting in manual mode as it is a challenge.
So my question: I am at a car show full of hot rods and I want to take photos at night of them driving by. Problem is that even when I use a tripod they still come out blurry to the point of streaking. I do not mind the streaked photo as I have 2 cool shots I did, but I would like the non-streaked blurry free photo at night. Any help on this?
Also, for still, up close car photos I am looking at getting the Canon EF 50mm f/1.4 USM Standard AutoFocus Lens. I like the lower F/Stop and would use it instead of my 18-55mm. Is this a good idea?
Your help would be greatly appreciated.
Sincerely, Michael

A tripod will make sure there's no blur due to CAMERA movement... but wont do anything to help with SUBJECT movement.  If the cars are driving by and the shutter speed is slow then its going to be blurry.  But there are two things you can do about this.
1)  Learn to take "panning" shots.  Panning is (and you did say you like 'manual' because you enjoy the challenge) going to be another challenge.
You can imply motion in a still photo by showing effects which make it clear that the subject was in motion.  A time exposure of a waterfall renders the water in a blur -- making it obvious that the water is in motion (whereas a fast shutter speed would freeze every individual water droplet).  With cars (or really any object moving -- as long as it's moving in "more or less" a straight line) you can learn to follow the subject with the camera as you take the shot.
Here are two examples I took:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/thevirtualtim/6290685372/
And just in case that one wasn't obvious, here's a more obvious panning shot:
http://www.flickr.com/photos/thevirtualtim/8981989420/lightbox/
In the first image, the car isn't moving that fast, but I'm using a 1/50th second exposure and rather than holding the camera steady, the camera is "panning" to follow the car... giving a reasonably sharp image of a car (except fo the wheels) and rendering the background blurry.
In the 2nd image, the cyclist is actually moving faster than the car was -- and I'm going even a bit slower on the shutter at only 1/40th sec.
Panning takes some practice to be smooth and steady as you follow the subject.  It's probably best to practice during the day... start with a fast shutter and gradually just keep slowing the shutter speed.   With practice you should be able to get a "sharp" subject with a blurred background for a nice "motion" effect in your images.
2)  The other method is to use flash -- provided your flash is powerful enough.  The built-in pop-up flash is only good for short distances (it's not very large or powerful).  If you have an external flash, this may work well for you.
The shutter speed has to be at OR below the flash sync speed (and I cannot remember if that's 1/200th or 1/250th on a T2i).  But even if it's much slower (say... 1/60th) you may be surprised at how well the flash will "freeze" action.  This is because MOST of the shutter exposure time is just the time it takes for the curtain shutter to completely slide "open" and also completely slide "shut".  The flash can only fire AFTER the shutter has completely opened and must fire BEFORE the shutter can begin closing (otherwise any part of the sensor that was covered by the partially opened/closed shutter speed will be dark.)  The actual amount of time that the flash is providing illumination is remarkably short... often significantly less than 1/1000th second (which is why a flash can "freeze" action even when the shutter speed was much much slower.
But there is one tip... many flashes support a mode called "2nd curtain sync".  Here's the idea behind that:
Suppose you have a very slow exposure time -- let's say it's a full 1 second.
Normally when a flash is used, the camera begins opening the shutter and, after IMMEDIATELY after the shutter has completely opened, the flash will fire.  Meanwhile the camera is counting off the 1 second exposure time.  When the exposure is complete, THEN the shutter beings to close.  That's the default.  It's also known as "first curtain sync".
There is an option to use "second curtain sync".  In that mode, the shutter opens while starting the clock running on the 1 second exposure time.  When the curtain shutter has completely opened, the flash... does NOT actually fire.  Instead it keeps waiting... and in that last moment just BEFORE the shutter is about to close... THEN the flash fires.
This has two very different effects on any blur caused by objects moving in the frame.
Suppose I take a photo of a car rolling slowly from left to right in a dim (but not completely black) location.  If my flash fires with 1st curtain sync, I'll get the full effect of flash on the car (creating a very vivid car) and then the flash goes dark but the shutter stays open as the car continues to roll forward.  So this "ghosting" or streaking of the car continues to expose on my sensor/film because there was some dim light.
You will end up with a car... and a streak of the blurred car which is oddly IN FRONT of the car (and not behind it.)
BUT... if you use 2nd curtain sync... the dim streak exposes first (as the car is rolling) and THEN the flash fires and the shutter closes.  This causes the "ghosting" or streaking of the car to be BEHIND the well-illuiminated (when the flash fired) image of the car.  This makes it look like the car was in motion and looks a bit more like what you'd expect.  But you have to use 2nd curtain sync (which is NOT the default mode) to get this.

  • Photoshop won't open Raw images with my new Camera Canon 6D help! I use Photoshop CS5 extended version.

    Hello,
I got a new camera and Photoshop and Lightroom won't open Raw images with my new Camera Canon 6D help! I use Photoshop CS5 extended version. and Lightroom 3

    Good news and bad news:
The bad news is that you need CS6 or higher to open 6D RAWs. (The 6D didn't get support until Camera Raw 7.3; 7.0 premiered in CS6.) You can choose to upgrade (I'd recommend skipping CS6 and go straight for CC 2014 for $10/month) *OR*...
...the good news is that the DNG Converter can help you convert your RAWs into DNGs for use in CS5 and Lightroom 3.

  • Bluetooth printing to Canon MP610, Help!!!

I have the Canon MP 610 printer and I have bought the bluetooth adaptor that was recommended from the Canon website. I can get my MacBook to recognize the printer but I cannot get it to connect. I get an error message that says there are no configurable services found on your device. This could be due to services not being enabled on the device, or the device might not have any services that need to be configured with the computer. See the docmentation that came with your device for more information. This helps me none because I have all my Canon instruction booklets and nothing tells me anything about how to get bluetooth printing, eventhough it has the capability. Anyone know how to fix this?

    Good morning everyone,
I had experienced the same symptoms with a new MacBook Air and PIXMA iP100 printer via Bluetooth printing, (Air found the printer, created a new printer device, but failed to print, produced Error message 311), and found the following solution to be successful:
Install the Canon non-CUPS driver version 7.3.2 (posted on Canon's support page for iP100 downloads), restart, and configure a new Bluetooth printer device from within the Print & Fax System Preferences selecting the "Canon IJ printer driver" - not the "Canon iP100 series" driver. It was as simple as that.
Installing the non-CUPS 7.3.2 driver does not overwrite the 10.1.0 iP100 series CUPS driver. You will still be able to configure separate USB-wired and Bluetooth-enabled devices, using each of the drivers for the appropriate use.
And, (as Steve Jobs might say), " just one more thing..."
This solution worked with either very reasonably-priced Belkin or D-Link USB bluetooth adapters, so I suspect other generic Bluetooth adapters should suffice as well; there's no need to pay a premium price to obtain great results. Printing is also fast: it took 2 seconds to spool and 5 seconds to print a NeoOffice 1-page document with text and graphics. Not too shabby for the Bluetooth protocol.
Hope this helps soothe some of that frustration out there...
    Best of luck& best regards,
    Marc

  • Canon MX870 HELP PLEASE

Just recently my wifi printer (canon PIXMA MX870) wouldn't work when it goes to sleep. I mean that when the display goes black it will not print and on the Mac it just pauses itself when i unpause it it repauses itself and won't print. Then i have to turn it off and on again (printer) and it will print fine. Please help. I haven't change ANY settings, i just replaced the PGI-Black INK and the cyan and yellow ink is "low". Any help will be VERY much appreciated.

I'm having the same problem recently with my Canon MX870.
    - Starting a new print job won't wake the printer from sleep
    - Clicking "Resume Printing" on the paused printer in the OS X print queue manager sets it to "Printing" temporarily, but eventually goes back to "Paused". (the printer display doesn't change at all)
Furthermore, I've had 4 instances now where the printer has stopped a job halfway through a page. Two document and two photo prints stopped like this.
These problems are observed from two of my Macs (laptop and desktop), so I think it comes down to Software Update. I've recently been prompted to update the Canon printer driver (twice in a row, if I recall...) and also an HP print driver.
Looking in System Preferences -> Software Update -> Installed Software, I see:
    On my laptop:
    Date Name Version
11/4 HP Printer Software Update 2.5.2
10/25 Canon Printer Software UPdate 2.3
    10/25 Java for Mac OS X 10.6 Update 3 1.0
    10/25 ProKit Update 6.0.1
    10/21 FaceTime
    10/3/10 Xcode Update 3.2.4
9/25 Canon Printer Software Update 2.3
    On my Desktop:
    Date Name Version
    10/30 Logic Pro 9.1.3
    10/24 Java for Mac OSX 10.6 Update 3 1.0
    10/24 Prokit Update 6.0.1
10/20 LED Cinema Display Software Update
10/18 Canon Printer Software Update 2.3
10/15 Canon Printer Software Update 2.3
The things they have in common are:
    1. Two printer software updates for the same version (strange)
    2. Java updates
    3. Prokit updates
apleaka, could you check to see what updates you have? The funny thing is, I did some major printing from the Desktop on Oct 25 and didn't notice any problems, which is after all of the relevant updates...

  • Canon T3i - Help With Video Settings

Hi, I just bought the Canon EOS Rebel T3i and I'm trying to optimize the settings for filming video but for some reason, it will not let me change the movie rec. size. It is set by default to 1920x1080 at 30fps but I want to change it to 24fps. The problem is that when I go to change the settings, I cannot move it to choose 1920 24fps, it only lets me change the digital zoom setting. I tried it with manual exposure and auto exposure, anyone know what's wrong? Thanks.

    Hi Darthmunky,
You may be able to clear this issue by clearing the Camera settings and Clearing the Custom Functions, as shown on page 176.  Please make sure your camera is in one of the "Creative" modes, such a "P" to access these settings.

  • Capturing 24p from Canon xl2 help please

Hi everyone, just looking for some help here. I should have known better abotu all this 24p stuff but want to make sure I get it right. K, I shot some footage on my XL2 at 24p and 2:3. Isn't 2:3:3:2 or Advanced mode only for if you shoot something that you are going to transfer to film. If you weren't to transfer would it have any benefits in the digital world???
Anyways, as for me, I just shot 24p standard. I capture as just DV NTSC 48 KHZ. However, I never thought of going through the easy setup and saw there was a 24p setting. However doesn't that one still just capture at 29.97. Anyways, so my timeline is set at 29.97, is this right or should it be at 24/23.98.
Also, can anyone tell me if a guy should ever play around with the feild dominance stuff. I have never but was just wondering if someone can shed a bit of light on that. Thanks.
    Nathan

24p (3:2) already HAS a pulldown on it. Pulldown refers to the process of adding frames by pulling down half the field of one frame and other half of fields from the next frame adding a NEW frame. So, just to keep you straight... you need to REMOVE the pulldown, cadence or pulldown cadence (all the same.)
WARNING... 1) don't attempt if you are short of time 2) have the fear of failing 3) don't have your original material 4) don't have a FULL case of beer 5) NEED this project done right! 6) any number of things I forgot!!
SO... if you've already edited some of this there is no good way to convert what is already edited into a 23.98 sequence. So you'd have to start again.
    IF you choose to proceed...
Copy and duplicate all of the material you captured just incase you mess something up.
    Open Cinema Tools
Cancel out of the first (database) dialog box
    File - Open... first clip
This will open a box with your video in it. Toggle thru the video. You'll see PPCCP (progressive/combined (combined frames will look interlaced)) for every 5 frames. The first C-frame is the BC combination of fields. You'll need to park your playhead on the first of the two C-frames in a group. Then, when you reverse telecine you'll mark the BC option and hit go.
Try it once and see if it works for you. You'll get the new movie open and as you frame thru each frame you shouldn't see any C-frames... they will all be progressive.
Now... open a new FCP project and import those reverse-telecined clips and start editing in 23.98 timeline/sequence.
If you ran into a problem, just duplicate the original clip back again and try again. I may have missed an important step... doing it off the top of my head.
As for shooting 24pA now... well... as I stated before... this can be less stable. The cadence is harder to add for the camera and any ANY oddity in shooting will throw off the cadence and give you a HUGE headache trying to capture it.
Don't EVER turn off your camera while recording
Don't EVER review your material and then continue shooting
Don't EVER change any setup on your camera at ANY time that might switch it to 24p even for a second
Don't EVER take the tape out.
That said you shouldn't have any problems!! Use the DV/NTSC 2:3:3:2 Cadence Removal preset for capture and your clips will indeed be 23.98 in the browser.
    Good luck... don't panic.

  • Canon 60d help

Currently I am shooting with a 60d and I just switched from FCP to Adobe Premiere. Every time I try to use the footage it makes me render. Are my settings off or is there a way to edit without rendering after every edit?

Decoding and playing back H.264 as it is used by the Canon DSLRs requires a reasonably powerful processor and a fair bit of RAM; you didn't mention processor, but 4GB is really not quite enough.
You might get OK playback by right-clicking on the Program Monitor (or clicking the Output button) and selecting Playback Settings and changing the setting to 1/2 Resolution or 1/4 Resolution. If that doesn't work, you'll either have to consider a more powerful computer (obviously not the most attractive option from a financial standpoint), or you can transcode the files--that's essentially what you'd be doing with Log and Transfer in FCP. If you go the latter route, you can drop all your files into Adobe Media Encoder (AME) and pick a format and codec to use for converting the files. Assuming you're still on a Mac, and with FCP installed, you could use QuickTime as the format and ProRes as the codec (check out The Video Road – A ProRes workflow end-to-end) or any other codec you like. AME has many different container and codec options, so a little experimentation may be required, but if you're already familiar with a ProRes workflow, you can be up and running fairly quickly.

  • FCE does not recognize Canon GL2--HELP!

I recently purchased FCE, and this is the first time I've used it for a project. When I originally installed the software, I did not have an external device to set up (I'm using my friend's Canon GL 2).
I am trying to capture video from the GL2, but whenever I run the easy setup, it says "Unable to loacte the following external devices:, etc."
The camera is on and set to VCR mode, and properly connected to the computer.
The really strange thing is that iMovie recognizes and is able to capture from the camera.
I have tried everything in the manual and the support site to fix this problem. I have reinstalled FCE, I have shut down my computer, turned the camera on and off, then restarted the computer. I have logged in with a different user account and tried it from there. Everything yields the same result.
Is there anything else I can do to fix this problem?
It's times like these when you really wish that Apple had free tech support.
    Thanks

You have reached the free tech support ... lol
Make sure you are using Firewire BASIC as the camera firewire control protocol.
Is there a firewire drive between the camera and the computer? Try capturing with the Camera directly connected to the computer. Canon cameras are notorious for their shaky implementation of the firewire protocols and do not play well with other devices on the firewire bus.
If it still won't capture, Go to /library/receipts and delete any files that say Quicktime followed by a number e.g. Quicktime703.pkg
Go to the Apple quicktime site and download the appropriate version of Quicktime to your hard drive.
    Run the Quicktime installer.
Repair Disk Permissions for your System Disk (Disk Utility > Select the system disk > Repair Disk Permissions)
    Reboot
Also when you try to capture, make sure the camera is turned on BEFORE you boot the computer.
    Good luck.

  • Canon IR 2880i printer "help" dialogue box can't be turned off

I have a Canon ir2880i networked to my Mac Minis at work (3 computers). Every time I print to it from my Mac OS X (running Leopard), I get a pop-up box that says:
+"Canon UFR11 Helper - If the output print appears differently from the original shown on the screen, select (Raster Mode) in (Quality)-(Quality Settings)-(Graphics Mode), and then print.: 15925"+
I do not wish to see this after every page I print (we print lots of pages in my office all day long, as many businesses do ... ). If I follow the directions, not only does it not prevent the pop-up from coming up each time, but it also makes the printout unreadable - not a solution, obviously.
I cannot find where to turn this off and it isn't relevant to any printing I am doing. Can anyone let me know how I can stop this box from popping up? I have been told by the tech at the place I purchased the machine from there is no way to do this and it seems ridiculous to me to have to put up with this from a $7000 machine.
    Thanks!

    Hi pixie_vixen.
Sorry that none of that worked. I hadn't tried it myself, but I was hopeful it would have worked. We don't use UFR in the office but I've used it at home with my Canon MF printer so I have seen that message pop up.
In testing the UFR2 driver this morning, I saw that the pop up is a process called User Notification Center. It looks to be a child process of the launch daemon, rather than a Canon application. From what I can see, the UFR2 Helper will start everytime you print and then puts a request to UserNotificationCenter to generate the pop up about the quality.
So it doesn't look like there is a simple user modification that can be made to stop this from appearing. The only thing I can suggest is to make a preset with the Raster setting saved and this will stop the pop up.
The setting is located under Quality > Quality Settings and for the Graphics Mode, select Raster Mode. Click OK and then save this as a preset. Now when you print with this preset selected the message will not appear.

  • Mac will not work with Canon EOS cameras

My imac OS X 10.6 is not working well with my Canon EOS 5d Mark II camera on the tethered mode. The camera works well with other Mac computers, and I have spent hours with Canon tech help. It now seems that the issue may be with the computer. The EOS Utility is working, everything has been updated, all Canon checkpoints look good, but when I use the camera, the image does not transfer. And then everything gets locked into a loop and I have to crash the camera and force quit the program. Is there something in the computer that may be blocking the transfers? any ideas where to look? Canon has done everything on the camera side, but I don't know where to begin with the computer.

OH, ok. So the issue is with transferring the image from the camera to the computer. Since you said you have done everything possible with canon, the camera's firmware is completely up to date, you have the correct software installed. Since you say no cameras work with this computer I am inclined to say the problem is from the computer, which is why the problem exists. I'd do an apple hardware test and see if anything turns up. Clean install of the canon software would also be a good idea.

  • Canon Pixma MX 450 printer showing offline with OS X 10.7.5

Any input would be greatly appreciated. I joke with Canon's IT department that I keep them employed! I was calling them at least twice a week for a few weeks to try to fix the problem, but was unable to find a resolution. I returned a less expensive Canon printer today, in a desperate attempt to get my wireless connection to work! I just installed a Canon Pixma MX450 wireless print, copy, scan, fax with my OS X 10.7.5. Everything seemed to be going great. The setup was fine when communicating between the router and printer; none of those connections failed. However, once I installed the software from Canon and tried to setup the wireless connection from the computer to the printer, the printer could not be detected wirelessly-I had to pull out the 'ol USB. With the USB, the printer was detected. The test print page printed, which game me a false hope! I tried a dummy page from Pages and Word both, but nothing prints. The printer error indicates the printer is offline and not connected. This is the same problem I had with the less expensive Canon. Help! I want to be able to use the wireless function that I paid for to print. Thanks

When you connected the MX450 to the Mac via USB cable, it would have created a printer in Print & Scan for this USB connected printer. If you then disconnect the MX450 USB cable from the Mac but then attempt to print to the MX450 using the printer that was created for the USB connection, this will result in the "Printer Offline" message.
So, are you trying to print with the MX450 printer that was created for the USB connection?
If you are not using the USB printer and definitely using the printer that you created when the MX450 was connected to your wireless access point (wireless router), then try removing this printer from Print & Scan and creating the printer again.
If you cannot find the printer when you try to add it again then check the wireless network settings via the control panel on the front of the printer. It will confirm what wireless network it is connected to and what IP address it has acquired.

  • C100 Viewfinder Issue // HELP!

Hey there, hoping to hear from some C100 users.  Recently I've noticed an issue with my viewfinder (which I don't use too often, but every once in a while).  For seemingly no reason my viewfinder screen will wack out and look almost like it's posterized itself.  It will lose contrast, color, part of the screen will disappear... it's quite frustrating.  Then it will randomly return to normal.
I contacted a Cinema EOS Support rep who said he hasn't seen or heard of the problem.  He advised me to send my camera (and pay for my own shipping and insurance!!) to a service facility with a note in the box describing the problem!  He didn't give me a service number or repair number or anything.  I'm not too excited about the idea of putting my brand new C100 in a box and sending it away with no formal instructions.
Anyways, before I look into repair, just wondering if anyone has experienced anything like this, or know what could cause the problem.  I've included images taken with my iPhone illustrating the problem.  Pics aren't amazing but you can definitely see.

Just wanted to say that Canon has helped me with this issue.  I sent my C100 in for repair and their customer service was great.  Repair only took 5 days.  Back shooting in no time.
