Canon 30D, Raw?

New with Aperture. When I shoot Raw or Raw+JPEG I don't see previews in the import view of Aperture. When I shoot only JPEG I do. Any ideas on how to shoot in RAW but get a preview so I can import only what is needed?

I have been using it directly from the camera. I will try the card reader in a moment. As of right now if I use a JPEG it shows previews. If I use Raw or Raw+JPEG I do not see previews. I have even waited to see if it were just slow at drawing previews when the files were large. This must be an issue others are having, right?
UPDATE:
It works fine from the card reader. I guess it is a camera issue. Any ideas on getting a Canon 30D to see RAW or RAW+JPEG previews in Aperture?

IPhoto choking on canon 30D raw files

Tried to run a pro shoot through iPhoto but it appears to be choking on Canon 30D raw files (.cr2 extension). I'm getting an assortment of odd problems (missing or oddly rendered images, saves that never finish, sliders that take 30 seconds to move; times when moving the white balance slider has no visible impact on the photo) that basically have left me scratching my head about iPhoto (at least with Canon 30D raw). I was using features like Duplicate and saving edited raw files as TIFF but those are all documented features and so I would expect them to work properly.
Is anyone successfully using iPhoto with 30D raw files?
I have Aperture and it works great with the same set of raw files but iPhoto is so quick and easy (which saves time but also means that it's easier to get other team members involved in the workflow) that it's tempting to use it at least as the front-end for selects and preliminary development. Or maybe iPhoto is just for jpegs at the end of the day even though it does seem to have a fairly capable raw converter?

Tried to use with Lieca Raw also errors.

Tiger and Canon 30D support

Hi,
I am wondering when the new Canon 30D (RAW) will be supportet within the new OS ?
We know that Apple do periodically updates and implement new cameras into the OS - but I need to know if there already plans or timeframes ?

I have the Canon Digital Rebel XT (EOS 350D) which uses the .CR2 file format as well. Preview opens photos taken in .CR2 from the Rebel XT just fine. I know that the Canon EOS 30D uses .CR2 as well so I suppose it would just be a matter of Apple adding the EOS 30D profile. Maybe it can already open pictures taken by the EOS 30D... Keep in mind that this camera was announced just a month ago.

Canon 30d and iphoto 6...will not import RAW

I'm a bit confused with iphoto 6, I know it supports Raw and my 30d... but everytime I import(or rather attept to import) RAW format it gives me an error message?????
however jpg. are no problem....what am I doing wrong?

I have the same experience with Iphoto5, although Preview seems to be able to open the 39D .cr2 files. I don't think Adobe has released the patch for the Canon 30D which will allow it to handle Canon's version of Raw.

DNG won't convert CR2 files from Canon 30D

I have installed Camera Raw 2.4 and also DNG converter. But when I try to convert Canon 30D CR2 raw files the DNG converter simply says: The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files. Have also tried dragging an individual image onto the icon, as instructed, but get same message: Can anyone perhaps help? Thanks.

You should always use the latest version of the Adobe DNG Converter, currently the Adobe DNG Converter 5.3, available here:

LR3 overexposing red in Canon 7D RAW

Hi All
I've been using Lightroom for quite a few years, first with a Canon 30D and now with a Canon 7D. So far I have found that all versions of Lightroom, including LR3 final, overexpose strong reds, particularly shot in direct sunlight on the 7D. The same shots from the 30D develop OK, so I'm fairly sure it has to do with the profile Lightroom supplies for the 7D RAW files. The fix normally is to reduce the luminance of reds in the HSL, but its not always optimal, and not as good as the Canon supplied DPP.
Has anyone else had this problem? Is it a known issue at Adobe? Anyone know a fix?

I don't have a colour checker, but I've run subjective calibrators (and have a very good eye), so don't think my monitor is out by that much. Thanks for the theory though.
Unfortunately the "by eye" calibration tools do not work. Even if you have a good eye. They are gimmicky and not very valuable (you get what you pay for basically). If you care about color, you cannot do without an actual hardware calibrator. Luckily pretty good ones such as the Spyder Express and the Huey Pro can be had for less than $100. They will make a world of difference.
As Hal notes, the passport allows you to generate a calibrited profile for your camera that you can use in Lightroom. Doing this will give you actually correct color (providing you have calibrated your screen). Contrary to popular belief, the rendering in camera (or in DPP) is not correct colorwise. It is what Canon considers pleasurable. You might also try the camera standard, camera neutral and other camera profiles for your camera in the calibration section. They are designed to mimic the in-camera processing.

Slight bands using Aperture and Canon 30D

Hi guys,
I have some problems using Aperture, developing/converting RAW files from my Canon 30D.
Unfortunatly I have bands in my pictures. Means that there are slight differences in the brightness of the files, which will give horizontal bands.
We already tested these files in other RAW converters like Capture One, RAW developer and Adobe RAW Converter.
Only the Adobe RAW Converter doen't show these bands in the RAW file, so we think that these are probably are errors coming from the camera chip, which Adobe already knows and fixed by their converter files.
I only see these bands on my concert pictures using ISO400 to 800. This will probably explain the errors coming from the chip.
So my question is, does anyone of you saw the same things in your pictures?
I have and developed image where you can see the problem. I also can send you the original RAW file to check for the problem.

Problem with Canon 50D RAW photos

Hi,
I got a DVD with pictures in RAW format taken by a Canon 50D and a Canon 30D.
Unfortunately I can neither see the RAW photos from the Canon 50D in preview nor can I import the photos into my iPhoto 08. All updates (including RAW compatibility) are installed on my iMac (Snow Leo). All photos on the same DVD that were taken with the Canon 30D do not cause any problems.
I tried to read the same set of photos with an older Macbook (Tiger) - it works!!! I can read them all.
Anyone an idea? The iMac won't let me re-install the RAW compatibility update as already all updates are installed.

Might be that the update for iPhoto '08 is iPhoto '09...?
As well, if these are recently introduced cameras, they may also bring newer requirements that demand an update from Apple for reliable RAW support - in that case, Apple may be playing catch up, and then the only choice is to wait.

When will LR read Canon 40D RAW files?

Any ideas when Adobe will post an update for the new Canon 40D RAW files?
Neither LR 1.1 or ACR 4.1 can read them.
Thats the major problem when new camera models are introduced and one have got used to the LR workflow.

I know that when the 30D came out, it was not similar to the 20D. One main difference as these new models come out is that they are higher resolution than their predecessors. There was a hack that came out shortly after the 30D came out that managed to make ACR work by using the 1D Mark II specification (I think), but it did not work reliably.
At the time, the history was that ACR was being updated about every 4 months if for nothing more than to accommodate new cameras. If you assume that that pace would continue, then ACR would be "due" late September, and LR maybe a month after that.
That is pure speculation on my part based on history, no guarantees, of course.

How to open canon 70D RAW files in Lightroom 4?

I have udated LR 4 to LR 4.4. It is supposed to open the newer Canon camera RAW files like the 70D. After updating with the download from Adobe LR ver. 4 will still not open the 70D RAW files. Does anyone have any suggestion? I must be doing something incorrect or am missing a step to the update. Thanks!

You have a choice to upgrade to Lightroom 5.6 or use the DNG convertor to convert the CR2 files to DNG and import.

Problem opening Canon 6D RAW even after upgrade today to PS CS6, WinXP-SP3

Givens: PS CS5>CS6 upgrade via $199USD download today, Non-CC upgrade. OS: WinXP SP3, camera: Canon 6D RAW (.CR2 files) and prefer to work on RAWs via Bridge.
Main goal: view Canon 6D files in Bridge, do adjustments, open via ACR into PS CS6 for further work.
My fav workflow for photos is: Bridge>ACR>PS. Just got a Canon 6D camera. So I updated to PS CS6 today and I did go through PS CS6 menu: help>update mechanism for all available updates, which was one round of ACR (and Bridge) updates, no more were offered. That brought ACR from v7.0.0.308 to v7.1.0.354--still could not see Canon 6D RAW files. I went to Adobe.com and did manual download for ACR/DNG 7_3 but it did not enable Bridge to see my new camera files nor could I open the 6D .CR2 files in PS. Got PS error message about not recognizing filetype, update ACR, etc (which of course I just attempted). (Seems as through PS and Bridge did not know the ACR/DNG 7.3 "existed" IF that is a capability).
Then I tried to install ACR 8.7 from the "Fix your 6D RAW problems page" and got error messages in PS CS6 (perhaps bc I am on 32-bit system). Decided to start from scratch; uninstalled PS CS6 upgrade.
Secondary issue is: Now I have uninstalled PS CS6 and done System Restore to the point just after I downloaded PS CS6 upgrade. I want to reinstall but the installer fails. Support chat told me to download PS CS6 Upgrade again (doing that now), then reinstall.
Solve: Main problem: Be able to work on Canon 6D RAW through Bridge and ACR (prefer NOT to workaround with DNG if possible) At time of writing, as mentioned, I am downloading PS CS6 upgrade again, then plan to reinstall. If that works, then I need steps to update ACR so that I can work on 6D RAWs through Bridge and ACR. Please know that going through Photoshop's Help>Update mechanism does NOT seem to work. Do I need manual updates? If so, please direct me to the correct ones and order of procedure to execute this upgrade successfully.

Yammer, thanks for the info about Camera Raw 8.3--that is my goal to load PS CS6 Upgrade and update to Camera Raw 8.3 Currently, I am having problems installing PS CS6 upgrade after uninstall. I have used Adobe CC Cleaner several times. It seemed to help, and the installer proceeded further with next try. Then I looked and there was no PS CS6 icons. I have done system restore also several times and am about to try again. It seems that my original PS CS6 upgrade installed, but when I tried to load ACR update, problems arose. Is there a way to remove recent version Camera Raw remnants from my computer. There is no Photoshop CS6 folder and further none for the CameraRaw.8bi for PS CS6. One possible clue: Yesterday I did two upgrades: 1) PS CS4>CS5 via box, then 2) PS CS5.CS6 on-line download non-CC. In one round of update, I saw that PS CS*5* Extension Manager failed to update. Seems unrelated but mentioned here for thoroughness.
Running ACR 8.3 in XP SP3 would be most useful and timely today as I have work to do. Many thanks, Paul

Horrible Adobe Chat Experience - How to open Canon 6D Raw files in CS5?

Hi, I just had an awful Adobe Chat experience with agent Dharma. I waited a very long time and when Mr. Dharma finally was able to help me, he wasn't able to. I was told that my product would no longer be supported and I couldn't be helped by Adobe because it was CS5. I was also sent to a faulty link. Anyway, I recently purchased a Canon EOS 6D and when I tried uploading my photos to Photoshop CS5 it said my RAW photos could not be supported. I followed the appropriate links for support and help.
My CS5 is updated, the Adobe Bride is updated. The extension for the photos is CR2 and they will not show the thumbnails in bridge and won't load in Photoshop. I need help. Now, I am hoping Adobe will support it's product and customer.

As each new camera comes out, Adobe have to write the code that enables Camera RAW to work with its RAW files. It is nrealistic to expect them to keep doing this for all previous versions of Photoshop. The Canon 6D needs ACR7.3 which Photoshop CS6

You have several alternatives.
As an owner of CS5 you can take up the BUndle deal at $10 a month.
You can download the free DNG conversion software, and convert your CR2 files to DNG which CS5 can read.
You can buy Lightroom 5, oir even Lightroom 4 (if you can still find a copy)
I'd go with the Bundle deal. There is a lot more to CC than reading Canon 6D RAW files.

Hi Zach.
Sorry to say but Elements 12 came out several months before your camera. Adobe stops updating camera raw files for old software editions so that people have to buy new versions of the software when they get a new camera. It happened to me with LR3 when I got a new camera.
There are works rounds but they are a lot of extra steps and I think you would be converting the files to Some format other than RAW (tiff?) and which I am not sure will perform the same.
I think you just need to get a newer version of Elements.

Adobe Lightroom 5.7 does not recognize Canon 60D raw files. I have Camera Raw plugin 8.7 installed. Is there solution?

Is this only when reading CR2 files on the camera memory card or also for CR2 files that were previously imported to your hard drive (i.e. ALL of your 60D CR2 files)?
LR 5.7.1 is only at Camera Raw 8.7. so OK. What Bridge, PS, and OS versions are installed? In Bridge go to Help> About Bridge
From inside Bridge launch any raw file and check the ACR version:
