Canon 40D and DNG 4.2

I have just updated DNG to version 4.2 but still can't convert the RAW files from the 40D. Always end up with "There was an error parsing the file". I am using DNG converter in stand alone on Windows XP platform. Can someone please help.

The most common problem is improperly installing ACR, for which the correct version can be seen under the 'Help=>plugins' menu. The best way to install new versions of any Adobe PS module is via 'Help=>update'. If this is of no help, then you should indicate your OS, the ACR version indicated (and how many CR plugins you see).

  • Canon 40D and Geotagging (GPS)

I've been reading posts and I still cant seem to understand how to do this. I have a Canon 40d camera and want to use a gps data logger to track where photo's were taken and then have the GPS information imported into Aperture 3.
Is there an easy way to do this?
    Thanks... Gary

I also own a *Canon EOS 40D* and I've investigated how to do that.
It turns out that the regular way is to use an optional module for the camera and hook up a GPS receiver to it.
    • First, you need the *Canon Wireless File Transmitter WFT-E3A* that permits wireless transfer and back-up, as well as remote control of the camera in Live View mode.
It can also be connected to various GPS receivers or Hi-Speed USB 2.0 external storage devices such as convenient flash drives or high-capacity hard drives with much larger storage capacity than the memory cards in the camera for instant back-up as images are captured.
The WFT-E3A wireless transmitter also doubles as a vertical grip and requires its own BP-511A battery pack in addition to the battery installed in the camera body.
More on this hardware by googling or searching dpreview : http://search.dpreview.com/?q=WFT-E3A
I've found one on Amazon at $635 instead of $1200. But it's still rather expensive, unfortunately.
    • Then, of course, you need to get a USB enabled GPS receiver.
I guess there are a great number of models available, with an equal variety in prices.
And then, your photos will have the GPS coordinates embedded in the file.
    I hope this helps.

  • CS2, canon 40D and 3.7 updates

I'm having trouble opening a CR2 file in bridge.
    I have a 40D
    CS2
and have downloaded updates for camera raw 3.7.
They are in the correct file.
When I try to open my RAW file in photoshop CS2, this is what it says,
"Could not complete your request because it is not the correct file type"
    can anyone help please?

    Leanne,
I don't remember what version of ACR was the earliest one to support your camera.
If your camera is not supported by ACR 3.7, then you must convert your raw files to DNG files first. For that purpose, you need to download and run the free Adobe DNG Converter version 5.2. It's a stand-alone application that does not need any version of Photoshop to run at all, so it doesn't have to match your version of ACR.
ACR 3.7 is definitely the last version that will run in CS2.

  • Canon 40D and G9 support

Apple locked down the original 40D support thread which is not a good sign for us Aperture customers who are not able to use our $300 application.
I did find an article that talks about using Aperture with unsupported cameras and I thought it might be helpful:
    http://www.oreillynet.com/digitalmedia/blog/2007/09/dealingwith_unsupported_rawf.html
Obviously this is not something any of us wants to deal with for long - especially since Adobe has offered support through Lightroom since September 12th, but it looks like we are going to be forced to find a work around until Apple decides to provide a solution.

Technically, discussing future features that haven't been announced by Apple is against the terms of service for the forum. That might be one reason why 'support my brand new camera' threads tend to end up getting locked.

  • Colored bands on photos in aperture canon 40d

Does anyone else get bands and squares of pink to magenta color on some of their photos in aperture? It only involves portions of the photos and does not affect them all.
I use a canon 40d and shoot RAW.
I know that other color issues have been seen with other cameras and that this resolves when you roll back to the RAW update 2.1 but surely someone in Apple knows about this?
Interestingly I have not experienced this yet on my Macbook Pro with the 2.4 update but it comes back each time in my imac.

I am still having this same problem
I have tried deleting both the preferences and presets. I have reinstalled Aperture and tried switching off automatic previews with no improvement. I have changed color sync profiles.
I have noticed that the same thing happens in iphoto 9.
I managed to speak to someone at Apple who was quite short with me and implied there was nothing much wrong. He told me to rebuild the database, then perform a consistency check and then hung up. I did both these things and still have the problem.
I have invested a lot of time in Aperture as well as money on plugins and don't want to change but I may have to turn to Adobe if this can't be fixed

  • No previews when importing from Canon 40D

I apologize if this issue has been discussed before, but my search techniques dont seem to be coming up with anything useful in the forum search.
I have recently purchased a Canon 40D and when importing directly from the camera cannot see the .cr2 previews. I only see the file names and grey squares. The import function works just fine, I just cant see previews. I have installed the Canon codec and tried the various previews settings (minimal, 1:1, etc..) but nothing seems to fix the issue.
I have LR 2.3 installed on a Windows XP system.
    Thanks
    Michael

Going back to a standard screen profil has ever solved the known "grey miniatures" issue, as far as I know.
I have tons of examples on a French Lightroom forum.
That's pretty strange that it didn't solve the issue for you...
Let's take it the other way round:
When a Canon camera is connected directly to a desktop via USB, because of specific drivers/protocol used by Canon, camera is not recognized as a standard mass storage.
By the way, it is way better to use a card reader to avoid this type of issue.

  • Canon 40D sRAW and DNG

I know that Aperture 2 does not support the Canon sRAW format natively. It is, however, supported by the Adobe DNG converter. I expected that Aperture would be able to work with sRAW converted to DNG. It does not.
I assume that the reason is that Aperture sees that it is from a 40D and tries to interpret it natively, when it is really a different format. It is unfortunate that the adjustments pane is greyed out, so I can't force it to use DNG conversion. It would be useful to be able to force DNG conversion just as you can force RAW1.1 conversion.
Does anyone know of a workaround in DNG? I know I could just use ACR to batch convert sRAW to TIFF or JPG, but that seems like it shouldn't be necessary.

hi all. I'm having the same issue with the 40d and sraw. I know the camera stores the images in a combined sraw/JPEG format, and I can visualize both forms in the Aperture photo browser using Pixelmator (I can even open and work with the JPEG version using Pixelmator). Pardon my ignorance, but is there a way to visualize/work with/export the JPEG version with Aperture? I have the latest versions of Aperture and OS X. Thanks.

  • Aperture and Canon 40D RAW

When will Aperture support RAW from my Canon 40D?
In the meantime how should I handle my RAW images? Can I import them into Aperture now with metadata attached and when the support is there all my photos and metadata will appear?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first question has been asked many times in the last 4 weeks and there's no answer. Ask more and Apple will lock this thread.
Second question. If you shoot RAW only, Aperture will import the file, and you won't be able to see it or work with it. You can export it to use Canon's DPP, Photoshop or other available converter to process it, save it to TIFF or JPEG, and then reimport to Aperture for now.
If you shoot RAW and JPEG, Aperture will import both files, but it's not apparent where the JPG file is. Control-click or right-click the grey square thumbnail or the reddish main window, and click "New Version from Master JPEG" to reveal the full-resolution JPEG image the camera took.
When OSX starts supporting 40D in the future, those RAW files will automatically be shown inside Aperture.

Did you buy PSE in the mac app store? If not, just go to Help>Updates in the editor and update camera raw and you should be able to open the raw files in PSE 12 directly without the DNG converter.

i have a Canon 6d and would like to convert my raw ( CR2) photo's into dng files. Adobe DNG converter 8.4 doesn't recognise the CR2 files. How can i solve this?

It is possible that you are not following instructions correctly in the DNG converter. The DNG converter interface asks for the FOLDER that contains your raw images. Choose the folder, but don't open it. After you have chosen the folder, click on the Convert button. The DNG conversion process should start.  Does that help you?

  • Canon 40D RAW Files and Leopard???

    Hi all,
Haven't actually bought Leopard yet (have to wait till pay day!!) but have a pretty serious question to ask.
Has anyone tried opening the RAW files from a Canon 40D on Leopard?? Just I know that in 10.4.10 they are simply unsupported. Just in case no-one has access to a 40D at the moment, here is a link to a 40D RAW file (zipped). If someone would be so kind as to try it out and post back, I would really appreciate it!! It's killing me having to use JPG in Aperture!!!

Yes, 40D raw files are now able to be opened by Preview.
I just upraded to Leopard, and in addition to confirming that 40D files are now recognized by Preview, iPhoto'08 and Aperture, I noticed another interesting new feature.
    - in Leopard, you don't even need to open Preview or any other app to view RAW files.
the new Quick Look feature in the Finder views all sorts of files right from the Finder, including 40D RAW files.
Just tap the spacebar with any image file (or files) selected in the Finder, and up pops the Quick Look window. works for RAW or JPEG. you can switch to full screen view too. if you have more than 1 file selected you can view index sheet or slideshow, like the old right-click feature in Tiger. works in any Finder view - icon, list, browser and Cover Flow too. looks very handy.
p.s. the Finder Get Info in Leopard now correctly displays EXIF data, including proper shutter speed and aperture (Tiger did not display aperture, and shutter speed was awkwardly displayed in decimal, not a common fraction)

  • Just bought Canon 40d - Use CS2 - Cannot read Raw files in Bridge

Heading says it all really. Just purchased new Canon 40D Body and have been using CS2 on Mac OS 10.4 for over two years. Cannot read RAW files in Photoshop Bridge which is what I have used consistently with 20D files up to now. Quick search on Google brought up fact that Adobe had not up upgraded Bridge to read new 40D files but that was 2 years ago. Am now looking for plug-in! Can anyone help or am I now forced to upgrade my CS2 or move away to Aperture or Lightroom? Any help gratefully received. Rob

The 40d is not supported by any version of Camera Raw that can run in CS2.  You need at least CS3 and ACR 4.2 or greater.
Dowload the free, stand-alone Adobe DNG Converter 5.3 and convert the raw files from your 40d to raw DNGs first, then you can open the DNG files in ACR 3.7 hosted by CS2.

  • RAW import from Canon 40D to Elements 4.0

I have a Canon 40D camera, and still use PE 4.0. I am unable to import my raw files - help! I have downloaded and installed the camera raw 3.7 plug-in. What am I missing? Any advice welcome. Many thanks...

If no-one else comes up with an answer have a look at my thread under the RAW Issues forum
    m. It may or may not be of help. It's entitled "Opening Raw Files saved as DNG"
The title might not seem to relate to your question but I think you may be suffering from the same problem I had . If not I'm sure some kind soul will come to your aid.
If nothing else it may pay you to post your thread under the Raw Issues forum rather than let it get lost where it is.
    Good luck, James

  • Camera Raw 4.4.1 still unable to preview Canon 40D CR2 files

Even after installing Camera Raw 4.4.1 plugin update as per installation instructions and purging central Cache...I am still unable to preview Canon 40D Raw (CR2) or Digital Negative (DNG) files on CS3 Bridge or Photoshop.
Does anyone have any suggestions? Thanks.

Jeff..thanks for your helpful feedback. OS used is Vista. After recieving your suggestion I confirmed that I saved the plug-in to Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats - and then rebooted the system. This seemed to resolve the problem and i can now preview raw file.
    Jeff, thanks again. Cheers, Doug

  • Cannot recognize Canon 40D RAW file

My Photoshop CS3 Extended cannot recognize the raw files generated in my Canon 40D, however this camera is on the list of recognized cameras. This camera generates files with extension .cr2. I downloaded the updates to photoshop CS3 and the DNG Converter 4.3.1, but still no luck. I am working on a Mac, if that makes any difference. Any suggestions on what else I can try?
    Thanks.

    >I downloaded the updates to photoshop CS3
Did you also download, decompress and correctly install the ACR 4.3.1 plug-in, replacing the old one in the same location? Are you sure you downloaded and install the Mac version of said plug-in and not the Windoze version?
When you go to the Photoshop menu > About Plug-in , does ACR 4.3.1 show up there and only once?
Did you purge the Cache for each folder through the Tools menu in Bridge after that?
All of that has to be done precisely according to the very detailed instructions.
