Canon 40D Raw support

Hi
I have spoken to Aperture and if you import your files into aperture they will be displayed when it is supported.
So you don't need to keep all those files on your CF cards.
Hope this helps!
(Can't wait to see what the images look like!)

Good on ya, Darren! Good to know there's someone on the Apple-side of things that can pass word on to us poor 40D users that support is at least being thought about. Gives a guy hope that it's not so far off!
So... didn't happen to ask them if the had a timeframe did you?
+j/k... I don't want to know when/if... don't shut this thread down... let's be adults about this.+

  • Canon 40D RAW (CR2) Files import

I've Photoshop and Aperture. Cannot install Elements which would be my preference - so help needed here.
Also - I use iPhoto mostly in the latest Apple OS, yet I cannot import Canon 40D RAW files. I get an error message saying they could not be imported - import failed.
    Help please.

    Freshacre:
Welcome to the Apple Discussions. What version of PS Elements are you trying to install? I've installed the PSE 6 demo without any problem.
What type of files are you trying to import and from where?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files?

When will iphoto accept Canon 40D raw files? I have a new camera and would love to use the raw files in iphoto. No luck so far. Aperature seems to lack the abilty to open them also. Anyone here as to when iphoto will be updated?

    Hi again.
No, I don't use aperture, I tried the demo and liked it, but I'd previously bought the commercial version of Pixmantec RawShooter converter for my 10D - Pixmantec were 'bought out' by Adobe, and Adobe generously offered all RawShooter purchasers a free licence for Lightroom, which I also like a lot (though haven't fully got to grips with), so can't currently justify Aperture too.
The one thing I'd say about Aperture is that the colour management for some reason just nailed the colours when printing using canned profiles, in a way other apps hadn't on Windows (including QImage). I was particularly impressed by this using an old Epson 1290S A3+ printer which always tended to produce prints with a colour cast.
iPhoto seems to handle RAW conversions very well and simply, although it's not as refined as the high end apps. This together with organising features are probably what make you find it so easy. Remember though that when you display/tweak RAW files, iPhoto will be creating a file to store these changes as the RAWs do not get directly manipulated. As all this is done behind the scenes again this probably makes it seem easy.
If you don't have Aperture or Lightroom, both were available for 30 day demo last time I checked.

  • When will LR read Canon 40D RAW files?

Any ideas when Adobe will post an update for the new Canon 40D RAW files?
Neither LR 1.1 or ACR 4.1 can read them.
Thats the major problem when new camera models are introduced and one have got used to the LR workflow.

I know that when the 30D came out, it was not similar to the 20D. One main difference as these new models come out is that they are higher resolution than their predecessors. There was a hack that came out shortly after the 30D came out that managed to make ACR work by using the 1D Mark II specification (I think), but it did not work reliably.
At the time, the history was that ACR was being updated about every 4 months if for nothing more than to accommodate new cameras. If you assume that that pace would continue, then ACR would be "due" late September, and LR maybe a month after that.
That is pure speculation on my part based on history, no guarantees, of course.

  • Aperture and Canon 40D RAW

When will Aperture support RAW from my Canon 40D?
In the meantime how should I handle my RAW images? Can I import them into Aperture now with metadata attached and when the support is there all my photos and metadata will appear?
    Any help is greatly appreciated.

The first question has been asked many times in the last 4 weeks and there's no answer. Ask more and Apple will lock this thread.
Second question. If you shoot RAW only, Aperture will import the file, and you won't be able to see it or work with it. You can export it to use Canon's DPP, Photoshop or other available converter to process it, save it to TIFF or JPEG, and then reimport to Aperture for now.
If you shoot RAW and JPEG, Aperture will import both files, but it's not apparent where the JPG file is. Control-click or right-click the grey square thumbnail or the reddish main window, and click "New Version from Master JPEG" to reveal the full-resolution JPEG image the camera took.
When OSX starts supporting 40D in the future, those RAW files will automatically be shown inside Aperture.

  • No preview for Canon 40D Raws?

    Hi,
I got a problem with my new Canon 40D. Everything works fine, Lightroom supports the Camera Raw but there are no previews shown in the import dialog.
Sometimes i got pictures on the camera from different locations or shootings and seeing which pictures to import where would be helpful.
If i shoot jpegs they are shown, but i really don't need them and they do only waste the space on my memory card...
Is it a known problem? Will it be resolved in the next version? Or can i do anything to make it work?
By the way, i tried to install Microsofts RAW Image viewer to get previews in the explorer but here i got the same problem - it seems not to be able to read ma Raws.

    Hello and thank you
first to ElliR - i tried dbmagic and it shows the previews in windows explorer - thank you very much. Unfortunately it does not support filmstrip view. Do you know if the next bigger version (plus) does this?
Back to my origninal question: it is definitly a thing between the camera and windows!
I'm shooting "full size" RAWs and when i connect the camera to my PC, i do not have previews in Lightroom or in windows explorer (even with the above dbmagic installed).
When i put the memory card (extreme III 4 GB) into a card reader connected to the PC both are working: i see previews in Lightroom as well as in windows explorer (i didn't try that earlier).
So it seems to be windows/microsoft to be the "guilty" - does it make any sense to report this behaviour to microsoft or anywhere else?
For my personal workflow i would prefer not always to fumble the card out of the camera, search my card reader and so on.

  • Canon 6d raw support in Lightroom 3.6

Is there a way to update lightroom 3.6 with a newer version of camera raw that will support a Canon 6d raw file?

    No.
You can update to LR 4.3 or you can use the free DNG converter to convert your raw files to DNG for 3.6.

  • Camera Raw 4.4.1 has bug with Canon 40D raw files

I shoot with the Canon 20D, 30D, 40D, 1DMII, and the Rebel XTI. The Raw processor is showing an anomaly only with the 40D files. When I load raw images, and when the image is displayed, it is shown at one setting. Then in 3 seconds, its updated again at about 1/2 stop brighter. Each time I click on another image on the left column, same thing. The new image is displayed, then 3 seconds later, updated at about 1/2 stop brighter. THe histogram reflects the changes showing the data moving to the right. This only happens with the 40D raw files.
    Whats up?
It happens regardless if "Auto" or "Default" is selected. I use "default" as a norm, never letting PS do an auto correction.
How do I stop Camera Raw from doing the second update? This has to stop.
    ...Doug

    Thanks John,
    Now moved to ACR -

  • Cannot recognize Canon 40D RAW file

My Photoshop CS3 Extended cannot recognize the raw files generated in my Canon 40D, however this camera is on the list of recognized cameras. This camera generates files with extension .cr2. I downloaded the updates to photoshop CS3 and the DNG Converter 4.3.1, but still no luck. I am working on a Mac, if that makes any difference. Any suggestions on what else I can try?
    Thanks.

    >I downloaded the updates to photoshop CS3
Did you also download, decompress and correctly install the ACR 4.3.1 plug-in, replacing the old one in the same location? Are you sure you downloaded and install the Mac version of said plug-in and not the Windoze version?
When you go to the Photoshop menu > About Plug-in , does ACR 4.3.1 show up there and only once?
Did you purge the Cache for each folder through the Tools menu in Bridge after that?
All of that has to be done precisely according to the very detailed instructions.

  • Canon 40D RAW Files and Leopard???

    Hi all,
Haven't actually bought Leopard yet (have to wait till pay day!!) but have a pretty serious question to ask.
Has anyone tried opening the RAW files from a Canon 40D on Leopard?? Just I know that in 10.4.10 they are simply unsupported. Just in case no-one has access to a 40D at the moment, here is a link to a 40D RAW file (zipped). If someone would be so kind as to try it out and post back, I would really appreciate it!! It's killing me having to use JPG in Aperture!!!

Yes, 40D raw files are now able to be opened by Preview.
I just upraded to Leopard, and in addition to confirming that 40D files are now recognized by Preview, iPhoto'08 and Aperture, I noticed another interesting new feature.
    - in Leopard, you don't even need to open Preview or any other app to view RAW files.
the new Quick Look feature in the Finder views all sorts of files right from the Finder, including 40D RAW files.
Just tap the spacebar with any image file (or files) selected in the Finder, and up pops the Quick Look window. works for RAW or JPEG. you can switch to full screen view too. if you have more than 1 file selected you can view index sheet or slideshow, like the old right-click feature in Tiger. works in any Finder view - icon, list, browser and Cover Flow too. looks very handy.
p.s. the Finder Get Info in Leopard now correctly displays EXIF data, including proper shutter speed and aperture (Tiger did not display aperture, and shutter speed was awkwardly displayed in decimal, not a common fraction)

  • Canon G9 raw support in Leopard???

Does anyone know if this raw support is included??

Perhaps the marketing megapixel machismo is over.
Some people have modified the camera .plist file to fool aperture into using another existing raw profile to render the G9's data. I would shy-away from that because Apple has to take each camera's raw format and do some calibration before Aperture is ready to render images.
If you can, shoot on raw and jpeg, drop the raw's at the side and work of the jpegs until Apple publishes the raw changes. I think Inside Aperture or Bagelturf sites had a piece about using aperture with raw+jpeg until a new raw profile is included in the OS.

  • Canon mk3 RAW support

does anybody understand why mk3 RAW support takes such a long time?
This seems to be an advantage for the Lightroom camp to enjoy much faster RAW convertor updates.
are there any reasonable work arounds?
    thx

    Eric,
there is no fix really until Aperture develops the RAW plug in for the camera in question.
so far only Adobe Camera RAW (i.e.Bridge, PS and LR) plus DPP can open 1DsMk3 files.
C1 (at least in 3.7) hasn't gotten an update either.
so basically you need to wait which is a pain since there is no way to archive the images in Aperture.
Let's keep out fingers crossed or move on to something more responsive.
    what a drag!

  • Canon 7D Raw Support in Aperture 2 after installing Aperture 3 trial

    Hi!
I'm having a really weird problem! A few months ago I purchased Aperture 2 and have been working with it ever since. About a week ago I installed the Aperture 3 trial to see what the general differences are. After playing with it I noticed not enough "useful" changes compared to Aperture 2 to actually purchase Aperture 3. So I removed Aperture 3 and went back to my good old Aperture 2.
Two days ago I bought the Canon EOS 7D, but when connecting to my Mac the Raw files are not supported by Aperture 2! While I was trying out Aperture 3 I used software update to update Camera Raw as well and it seems that Camera Raw Update 3.2 enabled Aperture 3 to work with my 7D's raw files but disabled Aperture 2 to support them! I searched the Apple support pages for older versions of Camera Raw and came across version 2.7 which should enable Aperture 2 to work with the EOS 7D. But as expected, I cannot install 2.7 because 3.2 is already installed!
Does anyone know wether it's possible to "downgrade" camera raw to version 2.7? Or is there any other solution to my problem? It can not believe that an innocent Aperture 3 trial forces me to actually upgrade to Aperture 3 because Aperture 2 now refuses to support my brand new 7D?! Is there anyone on this forum familiar with this problem and able to help me? Many thanks in advance!
    Kind regards,
    Mick van Jaarsvelt

I am running with same type of problem. I have Aperture 2.0 and can not work the Raw files from my Canon 7D. I have no problems working Raw files from my old Rebel Canon camera. Did you solve your problem?

  • Canon S120 RAW support in Photoshop Elements

I have Elements version 11. It will not recognize RAW files from my new Canon S120 camera. I saw that others have said that version 12 doesn't recognize RAW from this camera either. Anyone have any suggestions short of buying the full version of Photoshop, which I don't otherwise need?

    Hi,
The S120 requires Camera Raw 8.3 or later. This is an update to PSE 12 but is not compatible with PSE 11.
If you don't want to buy PSE 12, then you could download & install the free Adobe DNG converter. You would then use that to convert your CR2 files to DNG files. The DNG files can then be processed by PSE 11.

  • Cs3 extended bridge not previewing canon 40d raw files

ok, i just loaded cs3 extended onto my laptop and when i opened bridge the fist time i got a error message that these were not the the right king of file. so my next step was to update ACR to 4.5. i intalled that and put the plugin into files directory. that worked, but now my problem is that bridge will not preview my raw files in bridge. i then went to tool and purge the cache and that also didn't work. so my next step was to update bridge to 2.1.1. so i went back to tool to purge the cache and it still not preview raws in bridge. i converted  several to jpegs and they show up in bridge. i am at a loss of what to do next
    thanks

The ACR plug in has to be in correct folder and only one copy there.  If you copied it there the old copy my be present so delete or rename it.
The ACR plug in does not go in the plug in directory.
It goes in Program Files/COMMON Files/Adobe/plugins/CS3/file formats.   Should be one file here - Camera Raw.8bi
I think when you get this sorted out it should work.
