Canon 50D Raw & Viewers

Do any viewers exist (similar to the Epson P-6000) that are able to display
raw files from a Canon 50D?
Thanks
Mike

One option might be something like FastStone running on a (Windows) netbook. A bit larger than the Epson, but far more flexible and probably cheaper. Watch out for the poor battery life on some netbooks, though.
FastStone defaults to showing the embedded JPEG from raw files, so it's very quick and lightweight. I don't know if it's been updated to support showing the actual raw pixels from a 50D yet.

I am about to test a Canon 50D in conjunction with a Canon 20D.
Will I be able to work with the 50D raw files with my version of lightroom?
I have not moved to Version 2 lightromm because of the many reports about it's slugish performance.
    Your help would be appreciated.

All you have to do is make sure that you are always using the very latest version of the DNG converter. Yes, the very latest. It is not necessary to match the DNG version with the ACR/Lightroom version.
When I use the DNG converter, I usually open the card in Windows Explorer, highlight all of the images, then drag them onto the icon for the DNG converter. The converter starts, I specify where I want the files to be placed, and then click on the Convert button. That's really all there is to it. Yes, it takes a few seconds for the DNG converter to convert the images. But it's really as simple as a download.

  • Canon 50D RAW files not showing

    Hi all,
I just got a Canon 50D as an addition to the current 400D (Rebel in the USA).
I am shooting 100% RAW files, and I am having a problem with previewing them.
I downloaded and installed the Camera RAW 5.2 fro Adobe and Lightroom and Photoshop have no problems opening the files.
The quick view show only a white (generic) icon, Preview a Question mark, while the RAWs from 400D show without a problem.
I can sort of live with it as I use Lightoom for all viewing and editing, but it is a bit annoying that a quick look with the Quick Look is impossible.
Anyone has /had this issue? Any solutions please?

OK, here's a boy who answers his own questions...
The Apple Camera RAW update 2.4 does NOT list 50D as a new supported camera model, and yet... what do you know... it does include support for Canon 50D.
    Done!
    Hope it helps someone.

As to the Adobe RAW, I thought that it also becomes a "system extension" (for the lack of a better wording) which COULD help, and which obviously doesn't. Thanks for the info.
In regards to the Apple Update, I just assumed that the latest would contain all previous updates, or if it did not, upon install inform that one needs the previous one installed first (Just like Java updates do) - which, again, obviously it doesn't. Again, thanks for the info and the link. I am downloading as I type this, so will see soon - after a restart, so an edit is coming...
Strange thing with the yesterday's RAWs working 100% and today's not at all.
Hopefully the 2.3 will do the trick.
    Stand by.
We have a problem, the 2.3 tells me that it DOES NOT NEED to be installed as a newer version is already installed. This would imply that previous updates are indeed included in 2.4 (just like the security updates - enough to install the latest one.
Well, that's a bit of a problem, innit?
Any way to manually pick the 2.4 off the system?

  • Elements 6, Canon 50D Raw Files, Windows Vista

    Hi all...my first post here...
I'm able to load and see my Raw files in the organizer after loading the latest ACR. But when I browse through the files, after a bit,  I get an error message that Elements needs to close. After closing I check my task manager and notice that the organizer is at 25% CPU usage, so something is hanging things up. I just don't know enough to figure it out. (I'm a little tech savvy, but not a lot...)
I'm on a PC running Vista. Any thoughts would be very appreciated.
    Thanks in advance.

"Bug Files"? That's a new one for me.
I've successfully imported a Thousand RAW files with thumbnails generated in the organizer.
    I've got 4gigs of RAM.
I left the organizer open for 6 hours today and when I got back home, the RAW files still wanted to freeze, yet I was able to go to some jpg files and work on them before getting the "Elements is not responding and needs to close message". I'm going to go back to check on browsing the RAW files again.
I heard from someone on a DPReview Canon Forum who had the same problem with Elements 6 and the 50D Raw files and it disappeared when he upgraded to Elements 7.

  • Canon 50D RAW: LR2.1 RC1 vs. ACR 4.6

Will the RAW processing of a Canon 50D file be identical between LR2.1 RC1 and ACR 4.6?
I ask because I want to do apples-to-apples comparison of high-ISO images from the 40D and the 50D. I'd prefer to process the images in LR, but only if LR is just as good as the latest version of ACR in processing images from the 50D.

    >Will the RAW processing of a Canon 50D file be identical between LR2.1 RC1 and ACR 4.6?
No. It will be identical between LR 2.1 FINAL (not yet released) and ACR 4.6 FINAL (just released).

  • Canon 50D raw images seem to get shifted pink

I got a Canon 50D the day it came out. Realized there was no support for the raw files so I shot RAW+JPEG.
When it was finally posted, I installed the raw update and now Apeture (& Preview!) read the image but heavily shift the color towards pink. This is not the case with the originally saved jpegs nor when viewing the raw images with Canons "Digital Photo Professional".
It looks like the red/blue channels are being offset and the impact is worse the longer the exposure(!).
    Any thoughts?

Am I the only one who's seen this?
Upon initial import, image thumbnails look fine, then when you go to look at an image full size, it takes a couple of seconds to process (no histogram in the HUD for instance) then the second it's loaded, bam it turns pink.
Inspecting the histogram, the red and blue records are noticeably shifted right and the problem is markedly worse on long exposures.

  • Canon 50D RAW Files and PSE6

I've followed the instructions to add the latest Camera RAW files but still cannot get PSE6 Organizer to recognize the RAW files from my Canon 50D. The editor has no problem recognizing them and allowing edits to take place. Anyone have additional ideas to remedy this?

The issue happens either when downloading from a card or attempting to open the files from the card reader or a folder. I get the message "You are attempting to open a file that is an unrecognizable format or is corrupted." I got similar responses from the Canon software and Irfanview until they were updated with the latest rev that included the 50D.

  • Problem with Canon 50D RAW photos

    Hi,
I got a DVD with pictures in RAW format taken by a Canon 50D and a Canon 30D.
Unfortunately I can neither see the RAW photos from the Canon 50D in preview nor can I import the photos into my iPhoto 08. All updates (including RAW compatibility) are installed on my iMac (Snow Leo). All photos on the same DVD that were taken with the Canon 30D do not cause any problems.
I tried to read the same set of photos with an older Macbook (Tiger) - it works!!! I can read them all.
Anyone an idea? The iMac won't let me re-install the RAW compatibility update as already all updates are installed.
Thanks for your hints and ideas

Hello JobaMUC & welcome to discussions...
nor can I import the photos into my iPhoto 08.
The iMac won't let me re-install the RAW compatibility update as already all updates are installed.
Might be that the update for iPhoto '08 is iPhoto '09...?
As well, if these are recently introduced cameras, they may also bring newer requirements that demand an update from Apple for reliable RAW support - in that case, Apple may be playing catch up, and then the only choice is to wait.
    Good luck in any case.

  • CS3: HDR Merge Problem with Canon 50d RAW files

I recently upgraded from a 20D to a 50D.  I'm running CS3 under WinXPpro with 3GB of RAM.  HDR merge of 3 CR2 files is causing CS3 to generate a program error and crash.  This never happened with my older (smaller) files from the 20D.  Anybody know how to fix this?
    TIA,

The suggestion was to try an HDR with smaller 50D sRAWs as an *experiment* to see if the size matters more than the camera model.  Another benefit of a 50D would be the 14-bits per pixel instead of 12-bits and an sRAW would have less noise per pixel than a full-size RAW so using smaller sRAW images might work better than a 20D's.
The "size" being referred to is the dimensions in pixels, not the on-disk size, becasue the in-memory size of an image should be similar whether it comes from a 16-bit TIFF or an 16-bit RAW conversion.
Merging RAWs will involve ACR during the HDR process, whereas merging TIFFs won't unless you have the setting to prefer ACR for TIFFs, too, which you don't indicate.
There can be data in the highlights and especially shadows from a RAW that gets thrown away when it's converted to TIFF, so merging RAWs is better than merging from TIFFs.
I currently have CS4 only on my machine so I forget, but with CS3, does it matter what output size you have set in ACR, when you do an HDR conversion from RAW?  In other words, does HDR using ACR ignore the output size or not?  If not, then perhaps setting a smaller size in ACR (the same area where you set the bit depth and conversion colorspace) would make things work or setting a larger size with 20D images would make them fail.  This is being suggested as a experiment as well, to try to isolate the issue, not necessarily a permanent solution.
I don't think there is anything inherently wrong with a 50D RAW that would make it not work, but the larger size would use more memory and maybe your machine is getting close to some sort of limit.
Other suggestions would be to reset your preferences and check your disk(s) with scandisk and/or change your scratch-disk to somewhere else to make sure there's no some corruption keeping the HDR process from working with the larger 50D images, and along those lines, also try purging your ACR cache or moving it to another drive.  You might also try changing the amount of memory available to Photoshop (ram vs scratch-disk) in the Preferences.
What module does the crash occur in, if the error says?  Is it related to display or something else?

  • Canon 60D Raw Processing Quality

I have recently upgraded the raw file definition for Aperture 3.1 to include the newly released Canon 60D. To my horror I noticed that raw files coming into Aperture has purple dots all over the place, making the photos purple. Some photos were taken in 3200 ISO setting, some at 1600. My first thought was a problem with my photos, but then I used Digital Photo Professional to convert and it made a night and day difference. Is anyone having the same problem? I have gone through hundreds of photos between Aperture and DPP and it is clear that Aperture is not converting these raw files correctly. I didn't have this issue with Aperture when I had the Canon 50D raw format.
    Thoughts?

I am having the same exact problem with my 60D. All of my photos process with a dark magenta hue in the blacks. Upping the exposure or brightness on any of my RAW photos causes the pinks to come out of the blacks and the photo looks even more overly saturated with pink. If I shoot in both JPEG and RAW simultaneously, the JPEG looks as it should be. But once the RAW version reaches Aperture, or OS X in general, the pink hue is very apparent and has ruined all of the photos I've shot since I first got the camera.
It should also be noted that processing the RAW files with the factory software supplied by Canon with the camera processes the photo as expected without the dark magenta hues. Could there be an issue with the RAW compatibility that Apple delivered in the OS X 10.6.5 update? I doubt this is a problem with the camera as the RAW file looks fine when processed with any software that isn't Apple related such as Aperture, iPhoto, or Preview.
Attached is a screenshot of a normally processed RAW file (top) and an Apple/OS X processed RAW file (bottom), same exact photo:

  • Adobe Bridge CS3 - does not display thumbnails for Canon 40D or 50D RAW files

I wanted to use Bridge to view my Canon EOS 50D RAW files and it does not display the thumbnails, just icons. I checked my 40D cr2 files and saw same thing.
I have purged the cache and rest the cache preferences and it has not helped. I would like to be abl eto view the thumbnails of the RAW files via Bridge if possible. Jpg files and Tif files can be viewed without any issues.
Am using Bridge version 2.1.1.9 and Pshop CS3 10.0.1

I have the exact same problem. I can view my RAW file thumbnails (which are .ARW files from my Sony A200 camera) in the Finder and in other applications, such as Preview, but not in Adobe Bridge CS3. I know that I did try purging the cache at one point to see if that would fix it, but then I didn't know what to do after that. Before I purged the cache, I was able to view RAW thumbnails in Bridge, but then they would not increase in size when I tried using the slider (at the bottom right of the Bridge window)

  • Raw 2.3 update & Canon 50D

I was glad to see support for the 50D added with this new update, but after some quick testing I am disappointed with Apples conversion on pictures taken at 800 iso or faster compared to DPP. Aperture shows a lot more noise at the faster ASA settings. Adobe Camera Raw has the same problem, so maybe DPP is performing some kind of vodoo on the higher speed settings that Adobe and Apple have not (or cannot) figure out.
Has anyone tried different settings within Apterture to try to replicate the output that DPP is able to achieve at these higher iso's? I quickly tried a few things without any success. When I get time I will delve into it further, but if anyone else has some ideas of how to get similar results, I would greatly appreciate any tips or suggestions. It may be that Apple just needs to fine tune the conversion for the higher iso's, but it seems as though no one else has reverse engineered what Canon is doing.

Not using a canon 50d, using a Sony a900 instead. Actually, DPP is special because it does absolutely no noise reduction (at least in AHD mode). You can see that it is actually noisier but with a much finer grain pattern than ACR, aperture, raw developer, etc. You don't get the blotchiness associated with the NR of these other converters. The beauty of this is that when you run it through your grain reducing software it is much better for the software to deal with (the noise hasn't been processed by any NR software- which makes the noise non-random) and as such produces much cleaner images. I just did a comparison of the noise with the A900... here are links of the comparison using a publicly available Imaging Resource Raw file:

Aperture doesn't do a bad job, better than most others, but still not as good as RPP.

  • Canon 50D CS3 raw conversion noisier than DPP

The ACR CS3 raw conversion of Canon 50D files seems considerably noisier than conversion in Canon's own DPP converter. Is this correct, and are there plans to put it right?

ACR pretty much leaves the noise reduction up to you to configure the way you want it. The Canon software applies noise reduction automatically. I don't know if this noise issue has changed in later versions of ACR, but there won't be any more updates for your version. Have you downloaded the profiles that have been provided? Have you updated your ACR to version 4.6?

  • I have Lightroom 5 downloaded from the creative cloud. Lens profiles are not working for raw files. Canon 50D with EFS 10-22, EF 100 f2.8L macro and other Canon lens. None showing in lens profiles

When I first downloaded Lightroom 5 from the Creative Cloud lens profiles were working OK
Now it does not seem to recognize my camera - Canon 50D and lens - various Canon EF and EFS - All were recognized previously

I don't use these features, since I don't have such a cam, but could it be that you may need to input settings for filmback and distance of the lens mount somewhere? If the program operated based on wrong assumprions, the best profile in the world would be wrong...
