Canon 50D records video?

When I purchased my Canon 50D last month, the Best Buy salesman raved about how it takes video.  For the life of me, I cannot see how to make it do so.  Does the 50D really record video or was I duped by the Best Buy rep?  Thanks for your assistance.

No, the 50D doesn't record video.
The current Canon dSLR cameras that can record video are:
T1i
T2i
7D
5D Mark II
1D Mark IV

  • Hello I'm Christina, I'm using the Canon Rebel T1i to record videos. It only records 40 seconds

I'm using it to record YouTube videos but it only records the first 40-46 seconds then it shuts off. It's on the mode to record up to 24 minutes but it shuts off by itself. How can I fix this?

Usually when this happens it's the memory card.
As the camera is recording frames of video, it goes to the internal memory buffer of the camera. The camera, in turn, writes the data to the memory card. The memory card's ability to "write" data is usually the slowest link in the chain. If the card cannot write data as fast as the camera can capture frames, then the internal memory on the camera will fill up and the camera will be forced to stop recording.
The specs for the T1i require a minimum "Class 6" memory card (the logo look like a C with a number 6 inside) to record video, but frankly a Class 10 card would be better.
I've come to learn that not all memory cards perform nearly as well as their manufacturer's claim. SanDisk and Lexar brands have a fairly solid reputation. Even among SanDisk and Lexar, they make different grades of cards.
Lastly, card do eventually wear out. Think of them like car tires. After one ride you wont notice the wear.... but thousands of miles later it all adds up. The process of "writing" to a card slightly degrades it and after enough writes the card will fail. For a quality card, the number of writes should be very high (in excess of 100,000 writes). So it's possible that a card which was fine once upon a time may start to exhibit problems after a few years.

  • Shooting stills while recording video with the SX50

Has anyone done this?  I was shooting some video yesterday and was happy with how it came out until I realized that pressing the shutter button while recording video actually caused the video to insert a black frame and included the shutter sound.  What is this?
My Kodak Z990 was able to do this same function (take pictures during videos) and even though some of them would turn out a bit blurrier than I would have liked, it never insert a black frame and sure didn't stick the shutter sound in there.  Did Canon do this on purpose?  I'm going to have to try and pull this video into some video editor to remove the frame and sound and hope it works.
Lesson learned, I guess.  I'll take pictures and video separately from now on, just in case, but it's unfortunate that Canon screwed up badly on this feature.

    Charleyhorse,
The items you mentioned need to be set before you start the video. Once the G16 is running the video, you cannot make adjustments to white balance, ISO, etc. The people I deal with all run the video for their G16's in Auto mode and let the camera make the decisions. But like myself, they don't use video very often, so hopefully someone with video experience on the G16 can give some better insight.

  • Powershot SX510 HS automatically stops recording video after 10 - 15 minutes into the recording.

Powershot SX510 HS automatically stops recording video after 10 - 15 minutes on continuous recording. Is there a way to turn this off? I would like to record videos until either I press the stop recording button, or the battery gets low. I have turned off all the power saving setting, at least I think I have.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

The camera has some recording limitations as all the Canon models do. Below is how you can extend your recording times to a max of about 1 hour but there is a 4BG limit regardless so once it hits 4GB the recording stops and has to be restarted.
Also the memory card needs to be at least a Class 6 rating or the recording will stop sooner regardless of the clip size.

  • Canon 50D raw images seem to get shifted pink

I got a Canon 50D the day it came out. Realized there was no support for the raw files so I shot RAW+JPEG.
When it was finally posted, I installed the raw update and now Apeture (& Preview!) read the image but heavily shift the color towards pink. This is not the case with the originally saved jpegs nor when viewing the raw images with Canons "Digital Photo Professional".
It looks like the red/blue channels are being offset and the impact is worse the longer the exposure(!).
    Any thoughts?

Am I the only one who's seen this?
Upon initial import, image thumbnails look fine, then when you go to look at an image full size, it takes a couple of seconds to process (no histogram in the HUD for instance) then the second it's loaded, bam it turns pink.
Inspecting the histogram, the red and blue records are noticeably shifted right and the problem is markedly worse on long exposures.

  • Canon 5D mark2 video: which preconfiguration and exportation / original

I'm amazed that the "I can't edit 5D Mark II video with Premiere" cries are still surfacing. C'mon folks, that problem was solved months ago. OK, it's true, you have to spend an additional $99 for a utility (I'll mention that shortly), but that's life, every software package can't support everything. The problem is partly QuickTime, don't 100% blame Adobe. If you bought a 5D2 and want to produce video, you need to be ready to invest in some things, no getting around it.
First, the 5D2 puts out 1080p HD clips in H.264 at 30FPS, not the 29.97 NTSC standard. Keep that Post-It stuck on your forehead for a minute. Now, here's how to edit smooth and wonderfully in Pr CS4:
Go to VideoGuys.com and buy Cineform's NeoScene for $99.
Open your 5D2 .mov file with NeoScene, and hit Convert.
NeoScene will produce an .AVI file that will easily edit in Premiere. The .AVI file will be bigger in size than the raw 5D2 file, and will be interpolated from 4:2:0 to 4:2:2 (8-bit to 10-bit), just FYI. It's interpolated, don't expect miracles, but to me the video looks a bit better.
Import the .AVI into Pr and have fun. PrE should equally work I would assume.
That's it, simple! BTW, someone mentioned VLC... yeah, it plays video smooth, and the video quality looks like a busted cellphone recorded it.
    OK, couple of items:
If you record your audio to a .WAV separately like I do, just tweak your speed to 99.9% on the .WAV and all will be in sync. The 5D2 has rotten S/N ratio even with an add-on XLR converters; don't muck with on-board sound, just shoot your video on it. The Zoom H4N is a superb solution to record sound separately. OK, remove Post-It Note.
I assume you have some horsepower in your PC. If you're running an older dual core with 1GB ram and a single hard drive, game's over. You need power to edit. Get on the Black Friday deals and get some form of an i7 rig if you can with at least ONE separate hard drive for your assets, and 6GB of ram minimum (12gb is better).

  • G16 battery drain recording video

I just purchased my G16 a week ago and it is still on it's first charge. The batterry level would show full charge when shooting stills but when I would record video the battery indicator would start flashing red with 1 bar within a minute of recording. I would turn off the camera and back on and would have full battery again. Canon had me do a complete power reset and it did not help. I am thinking this is a firmware issue. Any ideas? Thanks

You don't mention if you fully charged the battery when you first got the camera or for how long you've been using the camera on the first charge. I would run the camera until the battery is dead, then charge the battery fully to see if that helps at all. I had a camera with a demo battery that came with the camera, which never had the full capacity to last more than a few dozen photos, so check to see that the battery is the right model number, and not a demo battery. If so, then you may just need a new battery of the right model number. If nothing changes, then check if there are any firmware updates on the Canon website to see if there are any firmware updates at http://www.usa.canon.com/cusa/consumer/products/cameras/digital_cameras/powershot_g16#DriversAndSoft...

  • Clicking sound when recording Video

When I record video, a clicking/whirring noise made by the camera is recorded on the video. I'm thinking it's the autofocus, or zoom (although it seems to make the noise even if I am not using the zoom.)Any ideas on what is causing this or how to get rid of it?Thanks!

  • Recorded Videos after Sync: The requested URL was not found on this server.

A few days ago, i recorded a couple of videos. They were saved properly and i could watch them after it in the Camera Roll of my iPhone. Because my memory was almost full, i connected my iPhone to my MacBook and synchronized about 900 old pictures with iPhoto and selected to delete the pictures after the sync. I did not select the recently recorded videos.
After the sync, i opened the Camera Roll on my iPhone and tried to watch the videos again. But now, they all have a grey icon and it says the duration is 0:00 minutes. When i click on a video, it shows me the following error message:
The requested URL was not found on this server.
When i connect my iPhone to iTunes, it says that there is about 350 MB of "Documents and Data" on my phone that I have no idea where it is coming from. Do you think it is possible that the videos are still saved on my phone but my phone doesn't recognize it as videos and can't assign it to the icons in the Camera Roll? Do you have any tips how I can access the videos in case they are still saved somewhere on my iPhone?
Thank you very much in advance for your help and tips!

I have the same problem too!! I was deleting some photos and videos in my phone when the next picture I swiped to was a blank picture with JPG in the middle~ after I closed camera roll and reopened it my photos and videos after that picture are all gone~ and I'm left with 3 videos I took about 30 mins before with 0:00 and when I tried to play them the message popped up saying "requested URL cannot be found on this server" T^T does anyone have a solution to this problem?

  • Recording Videos

I am having trouble recording video from really anything (tv, dvd player, vcr, etc). I have a friend who is using a MAC and a box called a Miglia Director's cut (http://www.miglia.com/products/video/director2/)
all he does is hook up the director's cut to the tv w/regular composite cables and it hooks to the MAC with a firewire. So then to record something off the tv all he does is open quicktime player, go to file and click record movie. Now i have tried to do the same exact thing, only im using windows and the option is not available to select "new movie recording" only "new audio"? i have found this little bit on the Support section of apple.com (http://helpqt.apple.com/qthelpwr3/english/QuickTimeHelp/pgs2/qtFmSet3.htm)
and it does say a MAC can record video but doesnt say anything about a windows machine. is there something im doing wrong or can you not use quicktime 7 pro to record movies on a windows machine??? Please help

  • Recording Video to SD - 4GB Limit?

I've encountered a bug with the video camera on the Z10.  I'm using what I assume is the latest version of the software that was pushed out recently (10.2.1.2102).
I was recording video and after half an hour or so I received an error message stating there was an error saving the video.  When I checked on the SD card I can see the file with the correct date/time and file extension however the file doesn't open.  I notice the file is 4GB which is the file size limit on FAT32, so it appears that the camera doesn't automatically stop recroding and write the mp4 info, or start a new file, when it nears this limit on SD cards.
1 - can this be fixed?
2- is there any way of recovering the video?  The footage I have isn't really replacable.  I've tried VLC and mp4box with no luck.
    Thanks!

    Welcome to the forums.
VLC would have been my first suggestion, there are a number of other MP4 web sites and apps out there I suggest you keep trying.

First problem: You're fine. The hotter it gets, the more the fans spin up. The computer is designed so that at max load, at max fan speed, it won't overheat (unless it's obstructed by something, e.g. sitting on your bed swallowed by a comforter). It's not the best thing to keep it that toasty for days at a time, but a couple hours at a time shouldn't be a problem.
Second problem: If something in the trash won't delete, just use Secure Empty Trash and it should be fine. Since .torrent files are quite small, it should only take a couple seconds.

  • I am after using my ipad for 2-3 hours to record video, it will be while traveling so I could do with being able to set it up so it just records while I drive. Is this possible?

Hello as stated I wondered if there is an app that I could use to record a journey that I will make, it will take aprox 3 hours I can charge my ipad up as I go so battery life is not a problem and I have quite a bit of room on my I pad. Is it possible?

Sure why not. The camera app will record videos and there are car chargers for the iPad that you can purchase. You will need some sort of stand to place the iPad into, but those are available as well. You might need to adapt the out of the box car stands to face in the direction that you want, but there are lots of them out there.
You should set the iPad to not go to sleep in Settings>General>Auto Lock>Never until you are done recording.

A third-party app probably cannot obtain a stream from another app. To the best of my knowledge, such a capability is not provided in the software development kit, apps being "sandboxed" from each other and so allowed to communicate only in very specific and limited ways.
I'm not completely sure what you mean by "limitations on video capture". An iPhone, to the best of my knowledge, can natively record video only through it's built-in camera, and audio while doing video recording only through the built-in microphone or mic/headphone jack. There might be a video recording app that would allow audio input from an external device connected to the dock connector, but I'm not sure.
