Canon 550D and LR

I've just acquired a Canon 550D and I have previously used LR1.4 for my Canon 350D RAW files.  I can open 550D RAW files in LR1.4 by converting using the DNG converter 5.7 beta.  I would like guidance on upgrading my LR1.4 - should I get LR2 (when 2.7 becomes available) or wait for LR3, or just stick with LR1.4 and the DNG converter.
What's Adobe likely upgrade pricing, LR1.x to LR2.x is about UKL92 - the question is what is the likely cost of LR1.x to LR3.x and LR2.x to LR3.x.  Can anybody remember the price ratios for Photoshop upgrades.

I don't think you will get an answer to how much the various upgrade paths costs until the product is announced in a month or two or three.
The fact that LR 3 beta 2 expires the end of June is a hint.  You can look at the current upgrade pricing from various versions of Photoshop to CS4 if you want to see if there are tiers but that doesn't mean LR upgrades will use the same structure, either.

It seems that a few years ago Adobe was much quicker in updating for newer equipment, even coming out with updates before the new cameras were generally available.
    Wrong...
The timing of when new cameras come out is not under the control of Adobe...neither is the ability to get new camera models to test and decode–that's completely under the control of the camera makers...
What you are seeing is the rather herky-jerky nature of hardware releases followed by software releases, nothing more and nothing less. Some cameras (and their users) luck out because either Adobe gets a camera really early (the higher the retail price the more likely it will get attention from the camera makers) or the timing of the camera is simply fortunate regarding ACR and Lightroom updates.
If you track back over time, Adobe has actually done a remarkable job of staying pretty darn current with new cameras–over 200 models to date. And the whole issue could be mitigated if the camera makers would make more of an effort or adopt DNG which would allow automatic camera support.
Seriously, it ain't Adobe...it the luck of the draw and timing and the fact the camera makers don't do a good enough job supporting 3rd parties...not just Adobe mind you but that includes Bibble, Apple and Capture One as well.

Check the settings on your camera to make sure you're not shooting Raw and Jpeg pairs or shooting bursts.

  • Canon 550D

Hi, I have just purchased a canon 550d and when I bring the MOV file into FCP it loads fine but when I drag it to the timeline FCP converts it to H264 format and the film is quite jumpy. I can not get ClipWrap to recognise it. Any ideas on a fix would be very much appreciated.

Thanks, Red. I am using an 18 to 55mm 1:3.5-5.6 IS lens. I was panning maybe 8 to 10degrees in about 3 seconds. I would pan at that speed with my Sony FX1 or my Sony a1e with no problem. However, I have now purchased an 8gig flashcard Lexar Pro 10 with 133xspeed. This has made it much better than the SDH 60x 4.
Anyway, thanks for the tip. The 550 D does have its limitations when making movies but I have now shot some great sequences taking advantage of the depth of field available using different lenses. I do a lot of wedding videos and the camera is less obtrusiveness when filming close up.

  • Canon 550D/T2i log and transfer problems

    Hi there...
I am trying to use log and transfer to get footage from my Canon 550D into Final Cut Pro (6.06)
I have installed the Canon E1 plugin and modified it in accordance with instructions elsewhere but alas everytime I try to transfer the footage I am warned it the directory structure is invalid.
Does anybody know a way around this other than using Compressor or MPEG Streamclip?
Any help you can give will be greatly appreciated

    try running a "System Update"
make sure you have your copy of fpc is up to date.
that did it for me. I am no longer getting that "Invalid File Structure" warning
and can just move the files to my external drive and log and transfer sees them.

  • Canon 550D connecting to MacBook Pro via FireWire 800

As far as I know, my MacBook Pro (MacBookPro8,1) has a FireWire 800 port. My Canon 550D / Rebel T2i has a combined A/V output and a mini HDMI port. I've been looking around online about a cable that would allow me to connect these 2 together via Firewire (required by Adobe OnLocation). I'm asking here because I'm assuming that someone here is bound to know something about compatible FireWire cables for my MacBook and my DSLR in order to use the software. My knowledge goes as far as needing to know if the MacBook and the DSLR ports are 4-pin or 6-pin. I don't know how to tell and I can't find this information about my MacBook Pro.
So, the question is: how can you tell how many pins my MacBook's FireWire port requires? And if someone can confirm, is it possible to connect these two things?

I can only answer part of your question. Your SLR has mini HDMI and a mini USB out. Your MBP has three ways to connect: USB, FW 800 (9 pin) and Thunderbolt (which is ao far supported by a limited number of devices).
As far as I know, you will not be able to use On Location with the Canon. But I could be wtong. Good places to ask are the Adobe forums and Canon forums.
    Good luck.

  • I cant updated Camera Raw to accommodate my Canon 550D Raw images on CS4 - its saying "Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document" HELP!!!

Ive tried downloading the latest version but then always brings up CS4 and says not the right kind of document...? ive tried going to Updstes in help and says all updated but I have version 5.0.0.178 of Camera Raw

Adobe Camera Raw did not support the Canon 550D until version 6.1 for Photoshop CS5.
The best way if you do not wish to upgrade is to download the 8.7 DNG converter and convert your Canon 550d raw files to dng so that Photoshop CS4 can open them in your version of Camera Raw.

  • I need advise on export for PrPro 5.0 files shoot on Canon 550D

    Hi every one.
I have made a short film shoot onthe Canon 550D. Frames 1920 x 1088 file type .MOV frame rate 23.976.
I have edited the short film. I want to export it so i can give it to a friend to grade it. Then when he has graded it i need to add the track of edited sound and music before its done.
I have a PC and a PrPro 5.0. I want to export it so i that i dont loose any quality.
Question: What is the best format to choose, Preset, Video Codec, and anyother thing i have to tick to prevent me from losing quality?
Also the person i am sending this file to grade has Premiere Pro 5 on his Apple.
    I really appriciate any help.

Question: What is the best format to choose, Preset, Video Codec, and anyother thing i have to tick to prevent me from losing quality?
There's no need to transcode your files at all. Since you're both using Premiere Pro, you can simply copy the Canon MOV files from one system to the other, and then he'll be able to open up your project file and relink to the media. It doesn't matter that he's on a Mac and you're on PC--the project files are cross-platform, and Premiere Pro on both OSes can open the same media.
After he's done grading the edit, he can simply send the project file back to you and you'll in turn relink to the original media--of course, that will require that you have any third-party plugins he may be using to do the grade. If he's only using built-in color correction effects, no problem--you'll see exactly what he sees. From there, just add the rest of your elements and you'll be ready to export.

I am trying to transfer my photo's from my Canon EOS 550D to my new 21.5" iMac but when I plug my camera into my computer, via USB chord, it just says "No camera found". I have installed the Mac compatible software onto my computer that came with my camera. This software included the following:

    Canon MOV Encoder
    Digital Photo Professional
    EOS Utility
    Image Browser
    Movie Uploader for YouTube
    PhotoStitch

I am a Photography student and I am becoming very frustrated with the fact I can't do anything with my photo's as I bought the iMac soley for Photography and Music.
Can someone please help me solve this problem.

The Canon EOS Utility should enable you to download both stills +and video+ from your 550D.
I don't think you will see the camera on the desktop or in the Finder (My Canon cameras never show up on the desktop or Finder when I connect & download, but Image Capture and iPhoto both communicate with the camera and download images & video. I never installed the Canon utility.)
The EOS Utility should see the camera and from there you should be able to download stills and video to your hard drive. +Is this working or not?+

  • Canon 550D videos don't sync to iPhone 4

    So here is the scenario:
    1) a Canon 550D Digital SLR (T2i Rebel) latest firmware + 8GB class 10 SD Card
    2) a 2010 iMac 21.5" 3.2GHz with latest Mac OS X, iLife 11 (iPhoto 11)
    3) an iPhone 4 and an iPad both with latest iOS
    4) iTunes latest version
I shoot HD videos with the canon camera and take the SD card out of the camera, plug it into the iMac and I import the photos and videos into iPhoto 11 (iPhoto 11 import utility comes up automatically when I plug the SD card in)
I move the photos and videos to a new album in iPhoto 11
I connect my iPhone 4 to the iMac and iTunes starts automatically. I make sure the iPhoto album mentioned above is checked to sync with my iPhone. Then I sync the phone.
result: the album is synched to iPhone & the iPad but _*only the photos are copied, none of the videos shot on the canon 550D are synced to the devices.*_
as a work-around. I am able to import the videos into iMovie 11 and created a project then export the movie to 720p HD format and then import that movie back into iPhoto and move it to the album then sync down to the iPhone/iPad! insane round trip
    I tried shooting in different resolution types (the canon T2i can shoot H.264 .mov HD videos in 1920 x 1080 (HD 30/25/24 fps), 1280 x 720 (HD 60/50 fps), 640 x 480 (60/50 fps))
It just seems like the iPhone 4 and iPad do not support these original HD videos despite the fact that they are stored as H264 and in a .mov file.
The workaround I described above is not really a useful or convenient solution. finding it hard to believe all this latest and greatest hardware isn't capable of supporting a simple task like this!?
been searching for an answer, but it seems like no one is asking the question. so either the solution must be really simple and I'm over complicating things, or no one has a need to do what I'm trying to do here.
Haven't tried pulling the videos off the camera through USB wire instead of taking the SD card out. not sure if that makes any difference.
    help please!

    Thanks for the quick reply!
I'm still learning video formats and encoding, much of that is still a mystery to me.
So based on apple's specs, iOS devices support H.264 videos up to 720p @ 30 fps. and I assume that 720p is 1280x720 based on definition I found online. I also assume that 720p can be shot at 30 fps or at a higher 60fps...
It looks like the T2i doesn't shoot 1280x720 at 30 fps, but it does support 1280x720 at 60 fps (http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/specs/Canon/canon_eos550d.asp). question: would those videos (shot at 1280x720 60 fps) playback natively on the iOS devices?
If not, and I'm stuck with converting the video to an iOS supported format, Any thoughts on how you'd simplify this workflow (from camera to iPhone). The way I'm doing it right now seems like overkill. I wonder if there are fewer steps to get the same outcome!
    many thanks!

  • Which one has better AF system Canon 550D or Canon 1D mark II N

    Hi,
I curently using canon 550D for bird photography and often misses the moments due to low FPS on Canon 550D.
My friend suggested me to trade in Canon 550d for good Canon 1D mark II N which has good AF system and high FPS. Yes I may loose some pixels but is it really a worth to give a shot?
    Please suggest me.
    Thanks,
    Mohan

Almost any newer camera than your T2i will do everything better including the 1D Mk IIn.  I still use mine on very limited occasions.  If you have EF-S lenses, none of them will work on a Mk IIn.
Bob from Boston, aka The Snowman, hits on an important point. The Mk IIn is dated and not likely going to be computer friendly for you.  You will not be able to change any of the Personal Custom Settings for instance.  It does not have lithium batteries either.
Have you considered the 1D Mk III ?  A much better and way more advanced camera and computer friendly.  If you are on the fence about a 1 series, the 1D Mk II (not the 'n' version) can be had in great shape for a couple hundred bucks.  Not a lot of money to see if it is for you or not.  That way you will know if a better and more expensive Mk III or even the fantastic Mk IV is in order.
    EOS 1Ds Mk III, EOS 1D Mk IV, EF 50mm f1.2 L, EF 24-70mm f2.8 L,
    EF 85mm f1.2 L II USM, EF 70-200mm f2.8 L IS II,
    Sigma 120-300mm f2.8 EX APO, Photoshop CS6, ACR 9, Lightroom 6

After installing Mountain Lion, I tried to scan from my Canon MX870 and received the message: "MP Navigator EX quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. A report will be sent to Apple,"  This problem happened right after I installed Mountain Lion. I then downloaded Canon's upgraded software and drivers for the MX 870 and the problem was resolved. Now one month later, the problem has returned.

Solved problem with original Canon software.  When I downloaded Canon software upgraded for OS X 10.8, I got all by Navigator Ex. Noticed that on Canon's site, the upgraded version is 3.1; my app was 2.1. Upgraded to 3.1 for Nav. Ex, and it works.
You should still use Image Capture IMHO.  If it was my gear, that's what I would do.  No need to worry about software upgrades.

  • Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?

I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

I think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.

  • How to open Raw files from Canon 1100D and 650D in CS5?

I need assistance please. I have a Canon 1100D and 650D. On Photoshop CS5 it does not recognise the 2 Cameras Raw files. What is my course of action. Help will be highly appreciated

evjems, As per the below article, Canon EOS 1100D needs minimum Adobe Camera Raw(ACR) version 6.4 and Canon EOS 650D needs minimum ACR version 7.1
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
So, you should be able to open raw files of 1100D, if you upgrade your PS ( Help > Updates), but not of 650D as it needs PS CS6 and above.
Let me know in case you still have any doubts.
    Hope that Helps!
