Canon 5D lll raw to Aperture - under exposed

Converting Canon 5D lll raw files via Aperture is producing a very under exposed image. The same file converted via Canon DPP or Photoshop CS5 appear 'correct.' Why is this so different? I have to increase the exposure in Aperture to 1.25 (default is 0) to get it to match.
Any idea how to fix this?

Just to make sure - have you checked the "Raw Fine Tuning" brick in the "Adjustments" tab? Is it set to "Apple - Camera Default" or set to something different?

  • Is there any support for Canon 7D s-raw in Aperture 2?

I'm using PowerBook G4, and I start to use Aperture 2. Aperture 2 supports the raw files, but does not support s-raw and m-raw. Can it be solved?

You could try the free Adobe DNG converter (Adobe - Adobe Camera Raw and DNG Converter : For Macintosh), if it can convert your D600 raws. Aperture usually works with DNG files created by DNG converter, if the  “Convert to Linear Image” optionis  turned off.

  • Corrupt/Non Viewable Canon Xs .CR2 Raw files

    Hi All,
I am having issues with my importing/viewing my Canon Xs .CR2 Raw files. I import them into Aperture and they do not show up correctly. I get either a black or a green and magenta static with lines for an image. I am currently running both the latest Aperture Version (3.1.1) and Digital Camera RAW (3.5.0). I have been searching for three days and cannot find a solution to this problem. I have found a few other people having issues as well. Here are some snippets/links from/to these posts:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=2667652&start=0&tstart=0
“The latest Aperture 3.1.1 update breaks Canon's "Medium RAW" compatibility; Aperture used to be able to read the "Medium RAW" CR2 files before this update, but not anymore. Also, updating to the latest "Digital Camera RAW 3.5.0" does not solve the issue.”
If anyone can please help, it would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Jeff

  • RAW Photos from Canon EOS 7d imported into Aperture still not working...

I have just purchased a new macbook pro with the most current operating system and have updated Aperture 2 to the most current version and my Canon EOS 7d RAW files are still showing up with a red box message "Unsupported File Format"......WHY ISN'T IT WORKING?! I've been waiting for months for this to work and finally they say it will work with the update and it it doesn't. And I read about the "~" issue and I checked and don't have that condition in any of my folders. PLEASE HELP!

In addition to the above comments, make sure you have run "Software Update" (if you're new to the Mac, click the Apple icon in the upper-left corner then select "Sofwtare Update..." from the pull-down menu).
The EOS 7D, being rather new, requires that you have +Digital Camera RAW Compatibility Update 2.7+ installed. This is an update to Mac OS X (not an update to Aperture.)
If unsure, open "System Preferences" -> "Software Update" -> "Installed Software" and view the list of updates to ensure that you specifically have that update already installed.

  • IN Camera Raw for Aperture the why won't the Canon G16 photos download?

I've had no success in downloading my RAW photos from the new Canon Powershot G16 into my Aperture Project library. Does Apple need to update the RAW compatibility software or is there another way to get my RAW files to work in Aperture?

The list of currently supported cameras is here:
Apple - Aperture - Technical Specifications - RAW Support
The new Canon Powershot G16 is not yet on the list, but the previous model Canon Powershot G15 is supported in Aperture 3.4 or later. So you have to wait for Apple to release a new raw support version.
While you are waiting, you have several options:
Shoot raw&jpeg and use the jpeg as originals; you can switch this later to use the raw
Or use the software that comes with your camera to develope the raw and import tiff or another lossless format.

  • Canon D40 RAW and Aperture..

just discovered that Aperture doesnt read RAW pictures taken with my new D40, the D20 is no problem. Please, please, dont tell me that I cant use my new camera with Aperture - I only shoot RAW and aperture is the only program I use...

    Hey Ian, thanks for that.
since you seem to know this stuff, I have an additional question, - I hope you're still there :
So if I upgrade to OSX 10.4.11, which version of Aperture do I need then? And what are the requirements for my computer to run the OSX 10.4.11 ? I have a macPro, dont ask me whats already inside it in terms of capacity- I dont go around remembering those things. ..

  • Canon 5D CR2 RAW Files Have Visible Artifacts

There's a digital dithering pattern that's clearly visible on CR2 RAW files even with no adjustments in Aperture. Here are two example screenshots from Photoshop. The first is an 800 ISO image and the second is a 50 ISO image. I shoot RAW + JPEG.
In the first, the JPEG from the camera, zoomed at 400% (top) and the equivalent JPG export at quality "12" (lossless) from the RAW image in Aperture with no adjustments (bottom). This is just the RAW, exported to JPEG at lossless 8 bit, same area at 400%. I experimented with 16-bit TIFF and PSD exports as well and the dithering pattern is the same:
    http://www.pipsqueak.com/imagehosting/ApertureJPGBug.jpg
In the second, I took the original RAW, converted it to DNG format (I have to in order to use Adobe Camera Raw on CS 1) and imported into Photoshop using ACR "camera default" settings. I show that image at 12.5% at the very top and a detail in a window at 400% in the middle of the stack. The bottom image was created by bringing the RAW into Aperture and, without making any adjustments, exporting it as a 16-bit Photoshop file.
I picked the blue area because it's easy to see the dithering pattern in a solid color. But it's there across the image.
This is not just a high ISO or highly adjusted image problem. This is an EVERY image problem, at least with Canon 5D CR2 files.
    http://www.pipsqueak.com/imagehosting/ApertureExport_Bug02.jpg
I've taken the same file, processed it using Adobe Camera RAW in Photoshop, exported it as a 16-bit PSD file and brought that into Aperture. Exports from that file are flawless. So I conclude that this has to do with the way that the OS is converting RAWs from the Canon 5D (or CR2s generally).
Can this be a priority to fix? If Aperture can't export high quality images, its other truly admirable features will be for naught.

Ian wrote a really good description of what RAW files are:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=1303439&#1303439
Since the RAW file is encoding the chip information, and the two 1D2 and 1Ds2 cameras use different chips (they do, don't they?), then it's conceivable that they could have different results in Aperture.
On the other hand, I thought that CR2 files had the same underlying file structure, so it's strange that they encode differently.
Might it be possible to take some kind of test image with both cameras that is basically identical and has some areas that are dark? It would be interesting to compile a list of those cameras that have conversion issues and those that don't. I know the Canon 5D conversion is not so good, and that there's an Olympus problem (although I don't remember the camera). On the other hand, there are a number of Nikon users who seem pretty pleased with their conversions.

  • Unable to open Canon T4i camera raw files in PSE10

I have a new Canont41 and I can't sign on to elements org
Message title was edited by: Brett N

The t4i is supplied with Canon's DPP RAW editor. Use that to set up your tonality and other structure including adjustment of chromatic abberation under the tool palette lens tab tuning section. I recommend you do not use the unsharp masking in the sharpening section of DPP in the RAW or RGB tab. Do USM in PSE if desired after final sizing/cropping/resoluton modifications. Other settings in the RGB and other tabs will be applied when you Convert and save as a 16 bit or 8 bit non-lossy .tif file for editing in PSE 10. Many tools in PSE 10 only work with 8 bit files anyway so I recommend you choose that option.
From the product page for the 4ti select drivers and software, enter your operating system, then version, then expand the software section. DPP 3.11.31 is the latest version which includes the new lens features. You need to have your version of DPP that came with the camera installed first from the CD, then run the downloaded update file.
Adobe limits the functions of its ACR RAW module anyway in PSE so using DPP should get you more features plus it recognizes Canon's proprietary settings in the "recipe" data embedded in the Canon RAW file that ACR or the DNG converter can miss. ACR uses Adobe's profiles for initial editing while DPP uses the data from the camera for initial setup. You chose that data in the various camera setup menus such as picture style, color space, etc., which can be modified in its embedded "recipe" and should be picked up in PSE.
A reminder that in RAW editing is is the embedded recipe data that is modified in DPP so the RAW pixels are not modified for most functions and they are modified in the export file only.

  • Canon G9 and RAW: colors are different

    Hi,
I tried to find an answer in this forum and on the web but had no success, though somebody must surely have noticed this before. I have a Canon G9 and when I import RAW images in Aperture 2 (2.1.3, with the latest updates), the colors look quite different from when I open the same RAW images with the Canon supplied software (Raw Image Task) or even with the Gimp. I am not even able to make the Aperture version resemble the Canon one by just changing white balance or other simple parameters, so it's not a trivial issue.
Did anybody face the same problem and found a solution?
thank you very much in advance for any suggestions,
    cheers
    giuseppe

    Hi Andreas,
thank you very much for your reply. I guessed something like that was going on. The colors from the Canon (or Gimp) raw conversion are much closer to the original than the Aperture ones though, so this poses a problem: If I want to use the Canon or Gimp conversion but store the image in Aperture, then I have to export the RAW file as TIFF or JPG losing the benefits of non-destructive editing on RAW files in Aperture.
I wonder if there is any software which could re-save the RAW image with some additional information that could make Aperture read in the correct settings for the RAW conversion. At any rate, it seems a bit strange to me, to say the least, that while an open source software like Gimp (even Picasa, I just found out) is able to the do the correct conversion (comparing with the actual scene's color as my eyes see it) - as Canon's own software - a commercial professional product like Aperture can not.
What do people usually do in situations like this? I tried to reconstruct the same colors that Canon gives me but I cannot even get closer to it. I guess it should be possible to do it with a very detailed manipulation of the Levels, but that is just too much work to do for every image...
cheers and thanks again for your comments

  • Canon T2i / 550d raw support?

I just bought Aperture 3 to use with my new camera, and was disappointed to find out that there is no raw support. (I get "unsupported format" when I import the images either directly from the camera or from file)
Does anyone know if Apple is working on a raw support update for the T2i, and in what sort of timeframe I can expect it?

  • Canon 1Ds Mark III and Aperture - MJK

Just starting using new Canon 1Ds Mark III with Aperture. I am a new APerture and new Apple user.
Photos import fine into Project. When I do any adjustments the photo gets completely distorted in the viewer. It is mostly white with pieces of the photo. Completely jumbled with mostly white space. Photo still emails fine, can't get my Epson 2400 working yet, so not sure about print. Anyone have any answers?

  • Canon DCS 520 RAW conversion

I have an archive of images taken with my old Canon DCS 520 camera. Aperture does not support the RAW format from this camera, yet Adobe Camera RAW 4.1 does.
What is the best way to convert these images so that I can bring them into Aperture an still make adjustments as if they were RAW files. Can they be converted to a DNG file? And if so how?
    Any help greatly appreciated.

Sorry, answered my own question. Adobe's DNG converter handled the job perfectly and using the DNG file I can access RAW adjustments of my Canon DCS 520 files in Aperture 2.0.

  • XSI RAW to Aperture via DNG not working

I just got the Digital Rebel XSI and have been using Aperture for my JPEGs on my P&S camera and was hoping to finally shoot in RAW. From what I understand XSI's RAW is not supported in Aperture so I tried to batch convert RAW to DNG using Adobe Digital Negative Converter. However, Aperture did not accept these DNG files and said the file format was unsupported any thoughts on how I can get XSI's RAW into Aperture?

First off thanks for all your help. If you haven't figured I'm an amateur newbie who's trying to take the next step to being an advanced amateur with getting the XSI. I've been using Aperture for my jpegs on my P&S camera since I prefer it's organizational tools to those in iPhoto.
So now my "workflow" (I always think of that as a professional word and feel funny using it as an amateur) right now is to shoot in RAW and convert to DNG for including in Aperture and save the RAW files. If I later want to import the RAW files can I "overwrite" the DNGs with the corresponding RAW files and preserve whatever editing/touchups I did on the DNGs? Or will I have to reedit the RAW files again later?

    Hi Folks,
I have been trying to open Canon 7D CR2 raw files in Photoshop CS6 (Extended) (Windows 8.1) but I'm always getting the error "Could not complete your request because the file format module cannot parse your file".
I installed the Camera Raw plugin ver 8.8.0.397 today. Did this initially by downloading and running the CameraRaw_8_8.zip available here Camera Raw plug-in installer. Still got the error.
Went and did the Check Updates in Photoshop and updated the Camera Raw (and other components) but STILL cannot open the CR2 files.
I can see the thumbnails in Bridge but when I double click to open them in Photoshop, same error.
Cannot seem to get past the "Could not complete your request..." error.
    Any ideas?
