Canon 5d Mk II - Repair Highlights issue

I recognized that in ACR 5.2 the Canon 5d Mark II has some
serious problems with Highlight recovery:
Yellows turn Red and Blues get desaturated.
It really keeps me from using it, thoug it usually is
an incredibly powerful adjust slider....
Anyone same problem?
Maybe an adobe camera raw bug.....

> maybe a canon problem???
It is a combination of errors, none of them of Canon's (they do maintain their fare share, but not in this case).
1. The shot is overexposed: see the raw histogram:
http://www.panopeeper.com/Demo/NikolausMacheck_Adobe_0405_Hist.GIF
The overexposure affects much of the colored fluorescent tubes over the shop, but it does NOT affect the "fetons ...whatever" under "REPLAY" between the two doors.
2. ACR interprets the 5D2 raw data incorrectly. It sets the saturation level at 15600, while it is in fact 15760. This increases the apparent clipping, though the direct effect is limited to the sky.
3. ACR adds 0.4 EV to the exposure without telling it to you.
The above effects *together* push the "fetons whatever" tubes into clipping. This needs to be corrected by -0.6 EV "exposure", not by "Recovery".
However, all this won't help on the problem of color gamut: some of the resulting colors are simply not in sRGB. You need to reduce the brightness even more if you want to keep the colors inside sRGB.
Important note: if you switch in ACR to ProPhoto, you seem to have caught the proper colors. This is eye-wash. As your monitor is certainly incapable of displaying ProPhoto colors, what you see may be more pleasing than what you get with sRGB, but that is NOT the color, which can not be reproduced. You have to go back and take another look in order to see the "true" colors, for no printer and no monitor can reproduce that. Your only alternative is reducing the brightness.

    Very much appreciate your taking time to send a response. As a new user I wasn't sure if anyone would bother. Allow me to add a little more to my first post. I fit in that niche between amateur and a person with clients. For over 10 years I have covered events for a non-profit agency capturing the look and feel of 20+ events per year and was given permission to purchase a few cameras over the year. My decision from the beginning was to use the Canon Rebel. Images were spot on and only once did I have an issue with one of them (after shooting outside events in 105 degree temps for 3 days).
    So, when I retired a year ago it was for me a pretty simple choice to get a Canon for myself - especially since at that time the 70D was on the cover of magazines and was very highly touted. I also did a lot of desktop publishing and photo editing which helped me realize I wanted the best sensor, sharpness, resolution and lens I could afford - the 70D. My post was actually a result of reading many online responses including your very informative replies about the 70D focusing issues. My biggest concern is that I will spend several hundred dollars and maybe, just maybe get back a camera which captures better focused images, but still not as sharp as the lower end Rebels I was using. I had hoped to purchase my first "L" lens and really get excited - not repair the most expensive camera I've bought to date.
    Thanks again and before it gets noted by someone...yes, I should have pushed this issue sooner and then at least the warranty would have covered the cost. An expensivve lesson learned. But I will have to add that at least one authorized Canon repair dealer told me they have had several folks feel like I did - that it was the photographer/me as a new user having the issue and not the camera. I now know it's my camera.
    Let me clarify that I don't own a 70D, so anything I say about it is from watching what others have said, mainly in this forum. But it is disconcerting to see so much complaint about a camera that's supposed to have an innovative focusing system. One is strongly tempted to suspect that they went overboard in trying to make the camera serve both still  photographers and videographers.
    That said, I'm not a great fan of the Rebel line, because they lack autofocus microadjustment and I have at least one otherwise excellent Canon lens that would be useless without it. (The 70D does have AFMA, a point in its favor.)
    As far as spending the $280 for the repair, I understand why it's a hard call. If I were in your shoes and were convinced that Canon understands the issue and would fix it correctly and permanently, I guess I'd go for it. If you don't think they do, but fell that you need something a cut above the Rebels, this may be a good time to buy a leftover or refurbished 7D. Even though I now have a 5D3, I still use my 7D's a fair amount and have been very happy with them. And the 7D2 has gotten such a favorable reception that's it's almost bound to make more 7D's available at a decent price.

    I followed all of the directions after seeing that my laptop flashed the folder with the question mark. But when I went to disk utility to repair/ verify issues w/ start up disk it would not allow me to. The buttons to repair and modify we're there but they were grey and couldn't be pressed.

    Were you trying to repair the disk you were booted from? You can't do that - you need to boot from your install disk, and choose 'Disk Utility' from the 'install' menu.

    Recently upgraded to a Canon Mark 3 and now having issues with my RAW files in Bridge and Photoshop. I have operating with CS4. Photoshop produces and error " Could not complete your request because photoshop does not recognize this type of file"

    Assuming you mean 5D Mark III, Photoshop CS4 cannot directly open raw files from your camera.
    Generally speaking, Adobe stopped updating older versions to be able to read raw files from newer cameras when they released a new major version of Photoshop. Photoshop CS4 is no longer receiving Camera Raw updates.
    You can double check this yourself:
    First you need to determine whether Adobe has released support for your new camera in your version of Photoshop. To do that, look at these two pages. You'll want to find out the earliest version of Camera Raw that can support your camera, then what version of Photoshop can run that version of Camera Raw.
    Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
    If you find your camera is supported by your version of Photoshop, you need to download the latest update for Camera Raw. There's more information on how to do that here:
    Keeping Photoshop Up-To-Date
    If your version of Photoshop cannot support your camera, you can download and install the latest version of the free Adobe DNG Converter, which can take your raw files as input and put out DNG format files, which your version of Photoshop can open.
    Photoshop Help | Digital Negative (DNG)
    The DNG converter DOES work, but if you want maximal quality from your raw files (not to mention the convenience and ease of use of directly opening your raw files) you'll want the latest version of Photoshop. Adobe has made substantial improvements in raw conversion quality in recent years.

    The Jamesburg facility is very convenient to the New Jersey Turnpike and could be on your way if you were, say, driving to New York. I'm pretty familiar with it, because my daughter lives in Philadelphia, and I've dropped equipment off there several times. In my experience they're one of the fastest repair shops anywhere.
    But BE WARNED: While the Canon building is close to the Turnpike, it isn't particularly easy to find. It's set back from the road, and the streets in the area seem to change names at nearly every intersection. So print yourself a map and be sure to take it along.

  • Mouse cursor problem (dock magnification, highlight issue)

    My logitech wired USB mouse has an issue with my iMac.  It worked for a couple weeks.  After then, whenever it is plugged in, it does not magnify the dock, nor highlight things correctly (cursor does not turn into hand over links, does not open nor highligh menus unless clicked, etc).
    After searching, this problem has dated back years and across OS X versions, usually having to do with a wireless or wired Logitech mouse (which mine is).  The first thing people suggest is restarting/killing dock, re-install OS, repair permissions, among other things.  This rarely fixes the issue.  The solution that seems to fix it for most people is to simply unplug the mouse and plug it back in.  Most people state this fixes it until it happens again a week later and either they do the unplug-plug again or just give up and switch to another mouse.
    I have tried re-plugging it back in but it doesn't solve the issue.  Other mice work just fine which I've have gone to, but I really want to use that mouse (plus, I hate giving up!)
    Can anyone help me?  I'd appreciate it!  Thank you!
    EDIT: Here are some more clues to the puzzle:
    - The mouse works fine on multiple other computers
    - Other people have described this problem as the iMac no longer knows where the mouse cursor is until a mouse-click is pressed.  That is why it doesn't open menus, magnify the dock, change into a hand when hovering over a link, etc.  To open and select a menu at the top of the screen, for example, the left mouse button must be clicked and held, then let go of when you want to choose something.

In webkit browsers my mouse/cursor does not respond to state changes. So when I hover over a link the mouse/cursor does not change to a hand or when I hover over a text box it doesn't change to the text cursor. It is really annoying. If I do click on a link after I click the cursor turns into a hand and then stays that way no matter what I hover over.
    Just a remark:
    I'm also facing a similar problem running chromium on 32-bit arch with KDE. When I move the mouse cursor over the edges/corners of the browser the mouse cursor changes state (so a s to show arrows used for changing windows size) but uses the default X11 theme instead of my KDE mouse cursor theme....

    I have a Canon IR c1028:

    I have it USB attached and Network attached. The network attached prinitng works fine but one of my home compouters is habitually attached to my coprporate VPN and so I use USB attachment. I have recently started having issues with printing from the MacBook which runs YOSEMITE as follows:
    1. Instal the printer using the driver from the above link (printer appears to be connected and online)
    2. Send print job to printer....printer makes a sound in recognition but if you watch the print queue from the Mac you see a cycle of:
    Priniting
    The printer is not connected
    The printer is offline
    This repeats every time and it does not resolve if you delete the printer and even if you reset the printer subsystem before re-installing
    Thanks for ideas ?

  • Canon ir 3200 printer scanner:  two issues

    I have MacBook Pro running OSX 10.5.4. Some issues have shown up when interfacing with Canon color imagerunner C3200, connected through IP.
    Problem 1: showed up when I installed Leopard about 3 months ago. The Canon C3200 is a color copier that can print and scan. When scanning, it pushes the file to a folder. I used to be able to scan to my Mac. Once I upgraded, the Canon could no longer scan to my computer. It scans fine to the PCs in house. I have installed all updates (Leopard, Canon, drivers, etc). No luck.
    I tried a WIDE variety of pathnames and sharing privileges, but have been unsuccessful since the upgrade in using the scan feature. Anybody run into this?
    Problem 2: started last week. I cannot print in color to the Canon IR C3200 - my documents come out in black and white. I have removed the printer, re-installed it, updated drivers, etc. I can print in color to other printers, just not the Canon.

    Hi there,
    The configuration of SMB sharing on Leopard has changed compared to Tiger. To enable SMB access on Mac OS X 10.5, perform the following steps.
    1. Navigate to System Preferences > Sharing
    2. Enable File Sharing
    3. Select Options
    4. Enable 'Share files and folders using SMB'
    5. In the Accounts window, select the Account you will use to authenticate to the Mac. You will be prompted to authenticate as the Mac administrator.
    6. Click Done
    7. Ensure the folder you are scanning to is in the Shared Folders list and that the account you choose in Step 5 has Read & Write privileges to the folder.
    Then on the iRC3200, check the following.
    For the Host Name, the entry should read \\macbookpronameaccountname. Also, instead of using the 'macbookpro_name', you could use the MBP's ip address.
    Note that the 'account_name' is the short name for the home folder where the scans folder (the folder you want to scan to) resides.
    Then for the directory path, the file path syntax requires a leading back-slash ( \ ) and any additional sub-folders also require another back-slash as a separator. For example, \Desktop\Scans
    So, for example, if the MBP was named 'Battlestar', the user home folder was 'Galactica' and the scans folder was 'Adama' located on the Desktop, then the syntax in the iRC3200 address book needs to be entered as follows:
    Address Name: +Any name you want - this is just a label+
    Select the Windows (SMB) protocol
    Host Name: \\Battlestar\Galactica
    File path: \Desktop\Adama
    Username: The account name you enabled in the Mac sharing
    Password: The password for the account above
    Re the B&W printing, if you are using the iRC3200 PPD or Generic PostScript, rather than the PS v1.81 driver, then check the copier Color Mode setting. This is located in Additional Functions > Printer Settings > Settings > Color Mode. Ensure this is set to Auto.

  • Windows 8.1 and Disk and Files Systems Repair Failure Issues

    Recently I have seen issues with many customers computers showing a "Windows needs to restart to fix disk issues" error reported from the action center. In all of the computers since the release of Windows 8.1 that have received this error, upon
    restarting, have either locked or continued to give the same error as before. The way we have been fixing it is backing up the data, reloading windows then restoring the data from an external (as UEFI will not keep file integrity in 8 or 8.1) while the OS
    is up and running. Most of the time I have noticed that when a customer installs any 3rd party software the error returns. Is their a patch for this or is the easiest way just to disable notifications from action center?

    Hi,
    You can first try to use Startup Repair option in WinRE to check the issue.
    If you just would like to hide such notification, refer to this guide:

  • Repair Disk Issues

    I was in Disk Utility earlier today and ran the "verify disk" feature, which told me I needed to Repair my disk because it was corrupted. It told me to restart from my install disc.
    When trying to boot from the disc, the screen will stay at the Apple logo indefinitely. I can boot the computer from the normal hard drive just fine, but have been having issues lately with Finder crashing and not being able to reopen until I restart the computer.
    If anybody could help me boot from the install disc I'd be greatly appreciative.

    adamrust1 wrote:

    Yes, it is. Option-boot into Startup Manager and see if you can choose your disk, if you can then go into System Preferences > Startup Manager > and re-choose your boot drive.
    To read more on verification or repair see this Apple kb article
    Next step I can take it to the Apple store I suppose.
    Sure, if it's close-by and convenient

  • Canon ICC profiles and color printing issues

    I use two Canon printers -- an all-purpose MP460 and a iP4000 for photos.
    I use Canon's Photo Paper Plus Glossy II paper and Canon inks.
    I print with color management off in the "Print Settings" and by selecting the ICC profile from the drop down in the Aperture print window.
    Since updating to Snow Leopard, the MP460 prints images that are consistently dark using the "SP" ICC profiles.
    The iP4000 has an issue in that it prints images from Aperture with magenta cast in areas of yellow to orange tones.
    I have had prints made through online services that have come back accurate, so I am wondering . . . is this a Canon profile or driver issue? I haven't tried printing from Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as of yet.
    Any suggestions?
    It is very, very frustrating since prints from these printers were fine before Snow Leopard.

    I have a Canon IP5200 and had numerous problems with Aperture printing from OS X10.6.2.
    In November Canon came out with new print drivers. With SNL 10.6.2 update and new canon drivers my prints come out pretty well using canon's ICC profiles. I use the PR3 canon ICC with Costco (Kirkland) paper and am pleased with the results. Hope that helps

  • Text Highlighting issue with TextSnapshot object

    Hi,
    I am working with a digital book application. I make use of swf loader to load swf pages created from pdf. I use TextSnapsot to draw inline text highlight on the pages. The highlight is thoroughly retained on the respective pages throughout the session and later it can be updated/deleted without any problem. Everything was working great till I made the following changes in the swf loading approach to enable page caching:
    I am now loading swf loader object into application memory and while doing jumping from one page to other page I am just copying the content of the next page to the current swf loader which is on the display to the user. There are two sets of swf loaders - one for displaying the page and other to cache the next/previous page(s). On the caching side, I load the swf into application memory and after getting it loaded I pick all the contents of the loaded swf page (the children of it's movie clip) into an array collection. While changing the page I copy the cached content into the swf loader's movie clip which is displaying the page.
    Now when I highlight on the page on display and navigate back/forth from the page and comeback again to the page where I did the highlighting: It shows the highlight I did. But as soon as I try to draw another highlight on that page, the previous highlight is instantly disappears from the page.
    I suspect that the Textsnapshot object which draws highlight while navigating (to the target display page) is different from the one which redraws/update the highlight on the same page next time. Although the Textsnapshot object id for both the objects is same.
    Here are some code snippet:
    For copying the content from the swf loader object cached in application memory:
            private function copyPageContent():void
                var contentCollection:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection();
                _pageContentVO = new PageContentVO();
                _pageContentVO.contentHeight = MovieClip(_swfPageLoader.content).height;
                _pageContentVO.contentWidth = MovieClip(_swfPageLoader.content).width;
                var count:int = MovieClip(_swfPageLoader.content).numChildren;
                for(var i:int=0;i<count;i++)
                    var dispObject:DisplayObject = MovieClip(_swfPageLoader.content).removeChildAt(0);
                    contentCollection.addItem(dispObject);
                _pageContentVO.pageContentCollection = contentCollection;
                _swfPageLoader = null;
    For copying the content to the swf loader which is displaying the page:
            private function copyContent(pageContentVo:PageContentVO):void
                for(var i:int = 0;i<pageContentVo.pageContentCollection.length;i++)
                    var dispObject:DisplayObject = pageContentVo.pageContentCollection.getItemAt(i) as DisplayObject;
                    MovieClip(this.content).addChild(dispObject);
                this.content.height = this.height;
                this.content.width = this.width;
    after this I dispatch swf loader's complete manually and in the handler of that event I take the text snap shot object.(highlightManager.as)
    Code I use to draw highlight manually(using mouse drag on the page).
           public function setHighlight():void
                removeAll();
                if(_textSnapShot!=null && _textSnapShot.getText(0,_textSnapShot.charCount)!="")
                    if(_isCoveredTextSelectedAtAnyInstance)
                        _textSnapShot.setSelected(_beginIndex,_endIndex+1,false); //this is the global variable to the class
                    else
                        _textSnapShot.setSelectColor(0xfff100);
                        _textSnapShot.setSelected(_beginIndex,_endIndex+1,true);
                    if(saveHighlight)
                        countHighlightedSegments();
    Code I use to redraw previously drawn highlight when I return to the page:
           public function showHighlights(textSnapShot:TextSnapshot,currentPageNum:int):void
                if(currentPageNum >= 0)
                    textSnapShot.setSelected(0,textSnapShot.charCount,false);
                    var pageVO:PageVO = _model.eBookVO.eBookPagesVO.getItemAt(currentPageNum) as PageVO;
                    var objColl:ArrayCollection = new ArrayCollection();
                    objColl.source = pageVO.highLightSelection;
                    for(var i:int=0;i<objColl.length;i++)
                        var highlightVO:HighlightVO = new HighlightVO();
                        highlightVO.beginIndex = objColl.getItemAt(i).beginIndex;
                        highlightVO.endIndex = objColl.getItemAt(i).endIndex;
                        setHighlightedSegment(textSnapShot,highlightVO.beginIndex,highlightVO.endIndex);
            private function setHighlightedSegment(textSnapShot:TextSnapshot,beginIndex:int,endIndex:int):void
                textSnapShot.setSelectColor(0xfff100);
                textSnapShot.setSelected(beginIndex,endIndex,true);
    Looking forward to your support to resolve this issue.
    Regards,

    Hi, I've resolved this issue.
    It was a textSnapShot GC issue.
    I just added the textsnapshot object into an array to avoid GC and that resolved my issue.

    How to solve this issue?

    Hi Rahul
    There are a couple of things you need to check here. I'm going to assume from the images, that you are creating CHM files.
    First, open the Project Set Up pod and expand the Windows folder. Then edit the properties of your CHM window and ensure the option to synchronize the TOC has been enabled.
    Once you have done this, edit the Single Source Layout properties and click the Edit... button. This should open another dialog where you would click the TOC Styles tab. Ensure you enable the Always Show Selection option.
    Cheers... Rick

  • Photoshop can't print to Canon Pro9000 Mark II - ICC profile issue

    I'm using Photoshop CS with OS 10.6.2. I have the latest Canon driver, 10.30.3.0, and the latest ICC profile set for Canon from the Apple driver site. As I begin the print dialogue everything seems fine. Photoshop is controlling color management, and I select the Canon paper/quality ICC profile. After I click print, it sends the print job and I get the following error: Could not print "test.jpg" because the ICC profile is no longer installed.
    I can load the same image into Photoshop Elements 6 and everything works fine, except I have the familiar Canon magenta cast syndrome I still need to work through.
    Any ideas on the "no longer installed" error?
    Thanks!

    The Canon ICC profiles for the respective paper stocks are stored in /Libary/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Resources/ICCProfiles. You should have one labelled "Pro9000IIseries.canonicc". I wonder if this profile may have been damaged with the recent 10.30.3 update, assuming that you had the previous driver installed.
    FYI - I found that running the update via Software Update did not correctly update the installed Canon drivers. Even deleting the queue and re-adding still showed the previous 10.26 driver. I found that I had to download the v2.3 Canon update and run it manually. Only then did the installed queues show the v10.30 update. Maybe you need to try the same?
    One way you could check if the profile is okay outside of PS is to print the image from Preview and via the Canon menus, set Color Matching to ColorSync and then select the profile you selected in PS. If you get a similar error then you know that it is a driver issue rather than being related to the application.
    Note that regarding PSE6, Adobe previously acknowledged that there was an issue with double color management, ie both PSE6 and the printer was controlling the color output. Adobe's suggestion at the time was to disable color management in PSE6 and let the printer manage the color.
