Canon 5D Mk2 arrived, but Aperture 2 says 'unsupported file'

I'm really delighted with my Canon 5D Mk2, but less so that Aperture 2 doesn't recognise my RAW files.Yikes!
As a working photographer, how can I work round this, and how long will it be until I see an update to allow me to use this camera?
Will Aperture automatically see the update when it comes, because I can't find a 'Check for Updates' button.
Thanks in advance.

When you use the DNG conversion, you are essentially turning your RAW file into a TIFF on steroids. Aperture recognizes the image file as such and only makes available the settings/adjustments that are available for TIFF/PSD images.
This is a very bastardized explanation: Basically, the DNG has a higher bit depth than traditionally the TIFF/PSD has as well as the fact that has a lossless compression. The Adobe DNG converter takes a RAW file, and converts it to a high class TIFF with special privileges so to speak.
You are right, there is an extra step added to workflow when converting to Adobe DNG but it is rather painless I think. Yes, it does take some extra time but, you are able to use files from a camera that isn't yet supported natively. A pretty good trade off I think.
[Note: I rarely upgrade my camera systems until Aperture supports them natively given I depend on Aperture for my workflow. My feeling, even if the new camera is really rad, it isn't going to be useful if I can't continue with the post processing, thus making a living.] If I'm forced to use the DNG converter I will download all the unsupported Aperture files to a folder, make a backup copy of the originals, then run the unsupported Aperture files through the DNG supporter and go to lunch or go to bed. When I get back, I simply import the DNG files into Aperture and I'm good to go.
Hope this helps.

  • TS4256 I have got a Canon 5 Mark III, but aperture generates previews instead of of using the embedded previews. What to do?

I have got a Canon 5 Mark III, but aperture generates previews instead of using the embedded previews of my Camera. Who has got an idea? Thanks

The built-in previews are ONLY used initially for speed.
If you have this set, then turn on quick preview and you'll be able view your images when the embedded previews.  But Aperture will not use these previews *forever* - it's only to be faster during import.
You may be misunderstanding what this feature is for and how it's meant to be used.  It's to make import and initial photo editing (picking your best shots) much faster - along the lines of the speed of Photo Mechanic, which it is.
It is not intended to permanently use the camera generated JPEG preview a the preview.  That woudn't really make sense as it doesn't represent how it looks.

  • Bookmarks back-up on flashdrive says "unsupported file type" when try to open

I followed the Help directions for backing up my bookmarks. But when I try to open the back-up file from a flashdrive, it says "unsupported file type." Also, when i save the back-up file to the desktop, it never gives me the option to choose that back-up file when I try to restore. Thanks!! :-)

Make sure that the backup file with the bookmarks has the correct file extension: .html for a HTML backup and .json for a JSON backup.<br />
You can check that via the right-click context menu of that file and open the Properties.<br />
If you are not sure about the file type then you can open the file in Firefox via "File > Open File"<br />
A JSON backup will show as one long text line without line breaks and a HTML backup as a web page with clickable links.

  • Incoming email says "Unsupported file type"

I keep getting emails which say "Unsupported file type" and will not display the actual message.  How do I find out what I need to download to be able to read these emails?

Forgive me, but I'm not exactly tech savvy.  When you ask for the email app, do you mean the provider - which is Cox?  And the problem only happens on opening emails from one regular source.

  • When I try to save on some websites I will try to save a pdf or mp3 file. Down below it will list the file and in the 'save as type' box it will not list as save as '.pdf or .mp3' but instead always says 'all files' which will not save it in a way it can

Why won't the 'save as type' section list .pdf or MP3 to save a PDF or MP3 file but instead always says 'save as type' -- 'all files "."'. How can I get rid of the 'all files'.?

Sorry, I have no idea what you are doing; can you give us some details?

  • Trying to import dvd into iDVD,it says Unsupported File Type:Unknown format

    Hi there,
I just had a home movie transferred from vhs to dvd. Now I am trying to import it into iDVD and when i try to the message appears : Unsupported File Type :Unknown format
    Logical Volume Identifier/VIDEO_TS.
I wanted to put the home movie to music (it allowed me to import the song, not the video).
It says the kind of file is UNIX Executable File.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thanks.

to do this you would first need to convert the DVD (mpeg 2) to QT so you can import to iDvd which btw involves a quality hit. There are apps out there that can do this at a marginal level ... for example:

  • Camera is set to sRGB, but Aperture metatdata says Adobe RGB

I have my Canon 40D's color profile set to sRGB, even though I get the impression that it serves no purpose if I am shooting RAW images (which I am). Even if it makes no difference in RAW, I still have to choose a profile in the camera's settings (I guess in case I switch to shoot JPEGs). Anyway, why does the EXIF Expanded metatdata in Aperture say "Adobe RGB"? Should I, and how do I, change that in Aperture?
    And does this matter?

Adobe RGB gives you a wide range of color, while sRGB give you less color. Since RAW files give you a lot of information, Aperture works with them in Adobe RGB. As mentioned in other posts, you can always export in sRGB. Personally, the only time I would use sRGB is for website photos or online photo labs when they request sRGB files. It is always best to start out with a lot of color and work your way down rather than the other way around. Down the road if you make something like fine art inkjet prints, you will be glad you have RAW files with the Adobe RGB color space.

  • ITunes shows all exclamations, but terminal search says the files are there

I was trying to follow directions on how to share music with my fiance on the same computer with different accounts. While I was doing this, I somehow managed to lose all my song files. Now about 2000 songs in iTunes have an exclamation point next to them. So I ran Applications>Utilities>Terminal and typed in the name of a group. It said the file was in /Users/Shared.itunes Music/ABBA/Unknown Album/Dancing Queen.mp3. However it is not, or at least I am not able to get to it. Can someone help me out? I cannot find the way back to the folder that has all my music files that I either bought or downloaded from a large music collection. I managed to find about 5 songs and those work, but the others are all "missing", but according to the terminal search they are not. So what gives? Of course Apple Care isn't open, so I am looking from help from someone that know iTunes well enough to tell me what's going on. PLease get back to me ASAP as this is a major issue for me. Thanks in advance for your time.

  • Aperture, Droboshare, and referenced files

Hi, I just bought Aperture 3.0.2 as an upgrade from using iPhoto. My iPhoto setup is such that I have all my files stored on a Drobo and connected to my network via a Droboshare. I am attempting to have my Aperture Library file stored on my macbook, while creating reference files of the same photos on the Drobo.
Now, I have no problems accessing the photo using iPhoto, but when I tried to import the same photos as referenced files in Aperture and leaving the files stored on the Drobo, it initially finds the files in the Import tool, creates thumbnails, and then proceeds to display blurry thumbnails of the pictures.
When I double-click into the picture, it shows the image enlarged and blurry. If I select Show File in Finder, it proceeds to tell me the file cannot be found and has possibly moved, even though the file remains in the Drobo unmoved. Outside of Aperture, I can still access the file and iPhoto still has no problems seeing the image.
In Aperture, if I select Locate Referenced Files, the bottom half of the window I can traverse the tree and I can see the file, but clicking Reconnect does not do anything.
Does anyone have any luck setting up Aperture to use referenced files stored on a Drobo connected to the network via a Droboshare?
    Any help is appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Tim

hmm, well i did try using referenced files directly off my machine and that seemed to work. Thing is, iPhoto is working fine with the Drobo via the Droboshare, as is my iTunes, which I also store on the Drobo as well, so I assume the problem must be Aperture which doesn't seem to like the Drobo?
After importing a referenced file from Drobo into Aperture, I did notice a peculiarity: when I click Show in Finder in Aperture, it says the file cannot be found, and it displays the following path:
    /Volumes/DroboShare/0db090320629/LUN0/Drobo/0db090320629/LUN0/Drobo/flowers.jpg
so I copied the following path into the Finder's Go To Folder:
    /Volumes/DroboShare/0db090320629/LUN0/Drobo/0db090320629/LUN0/Drobo
and the Finder says the folder can't be found.
However, I noticed the path is repeating itself after the first Drobo, so then I tried copying the following path into the Finder's Go To Folder:
    /Volumes/DroboShare/0db090320629/LUN0/Drobo
and this works and Finder can find the folder where the image is stored. This leads me to believe there is a bug in the way Aperture is creating the referenced image path?
Shortly after I originally posted, Apple released 3.0.3. I was really hoping this would fix the error, but I can confirm I still have the same problem after upgrading to 3.0.3.
I'm just curious if anyone else out there is successfully using a workflow which incorporates a network attached storage for their referenced files?
    Regards,
    Tim

  • IPod Nano 7th Gen says "Unsupported. Accessory is not supported" when trying to charge / sync

iPod Nano 7th Gen says "Unsupported. Accessory is not supported" when trying to charge / sync with official apple lightening cable.
It worked for almost a year then suddenly began to say that. My computer [windows], lightening cable and my power brick [all apple official] are all the same as they were when it was working. The iPod is almost a year old now, and has worked perfectly up until about a week ago.
I have tried resetting the iPod, plugging it into different charging sources but it keeps saying "Unsupported. Accessory is not supported"
Does anyone have any ideas on how to fix it?
    Thanks.

Your iPod Nano firmware and iTunes updated to the current versions?
It is very difficult to offer troubleshooting suggestions when the "os version" you are using is unknown as each os has their own troubleshooting solutions.

  • Trying to download itunes for windows 7 and when i open the installer it says the file is corrupt? what do I do?

I have tried to download it mutiple times, restarted my computer and tried again but it still says corrupt file. any idea what the problem is and how I may be able to fix it?

    Okay.
    (1) Download the Windows Installer CleanUp utility installer file (msicuu2.exe) from the following Major Geeks page (use one of the links under the "DOWNLOAD LOCATIONS" thingy on the Major Geeks page):
    http://majorgeeks.com/download.php?det=4459
    (2) Doubleclick the msicuu2.exe file and follow the prompts to install the Windows Installer CleanUp utility. (If you're on a Windows Vista or Windows 7 system and you get a Code 800A0046 error message when doubleclicking the msicuu2.exe file, try instead right-clicking on the msicuu2.exe file and selecting "Run as administrator".)
    (3) In your Start menu click All Programs and then click Windows Install Clean Up. The Windows Installer CleanUp utility window appears, listing software that is currently installed on your computer.
    (4) In the list of programs that appears in CleanUp, select any iTunes entries and click "Remove", as per the following screenshot:
    (5) Quit out of CleanUp, restart the PC and try another iTunes install. Does it go through properly this time?
