Canon 5D, prophoto and external editor

Hello all,
As I'm on a slow system I've decided to use Aperture for RAW conversion, white balance exposure and library management but use Photoshop as the default editor for the other adjustments (levels is too jerky) on best images and living with the larger file sizes - coming from a world of 220MB scanned images it's not so bad.
However, I'm having problems with the colour space when I edit externally. The 5D only has two options and you must pick one - Adobe (1998) and sRGB, there's no prophoto. So I have set it as Adobe (1998), thinking that as I'm working with RAW images it wouldn't matter. But when I edit externally PS prompts that there is a colour space mismatch - it recognises it as Adobe (1998) - if I convert it to the Prophoto working space the image has a red cast (I guess because converting to a wider colour space from a narrower one doesn't work). Interestingly, if I export instead from Aperture, it is set up as 16 bit prophoto and this works fine. When opened in PS the image does not show this red colour cast and it opens correctly in the prophoto colour space.
Is there a solution to this or is it not possible to edit externally in the prophoto colour space with the Canon 5D? Perhaps exporting externally edited Adobe (1998) version results in a 16 bit prophoto image but that means I've two PSD files + RAW. The other compromise option is to export for adjustments and then reimport so it remains within the Aperture system. I can live with this latter compromise but wondered if there was a solution to this external editing colour space. Any help would be greatly appreciated.
Kind regards,
Ross

Aperture automatically sends Adobe98 images out to the external editor, it's got nothing to do with the camera model.
If you want other colour spaces available you won't be alone and I suggest hitting Aperture>Provide Aperture Feedback within Aperture.

  • Aperture and external editor

When opening a file with the external editor (I think most of you using PS like me), then saving it and go back to aperture, the file size is much greater than the original RAW file (roughly 58Mb in my case).
I guess that's because PS opens the files either in PSD or TIFF 16bit format.
    So my questions are:
    1. After editing with PS, Is there a way to go back to Aperture and maintain the same file size?
    2. Why can't PS manage the file in a RAW format rather than PSD or TIFF?
    3. Are these files stored in the Aperture library?
    Thank you in advance!
    Guido

    Hi Guido,
in addition to Adam's correct reply:
    1.
Nope (see 2.). It doesn't matter from where the RAW file comes (Aperture, Finder, ... ).
    2.
It does manage the RAW file (else it wouldn't be able to open it
But no program can save a RAW file (it's also called "Digital negative", as in the analog world this negative exists once only).
PS is a destructive editing application, whatever you do changes the original you send over. That's why you copy the original (background) layer first thing when applying filters and/or use adjustment layers.
Layers can only be saved as PSD or TIFF - and those are big, that's the way it is.
    3.
Yes. But you can make it referenced like any other image.
    Hope it helps,
    chris

  • Can I use Canon DPP as the external editor in Aperture 3 so I can use the lens distortion correction?

I'd like to use Aperture as my standard RAW converter and export to DPP if necessary. Has anyone tried it?

No, I don't believe so.  DPP is a RAW converter, like Aperture, and you usually can't mix and match those.

  • I am using both PSE 13 and Lightroom 5.  When I use Lightroom as an external editor and save the photo, it shows up in PSE13 as an edited file but does not look any different.  Why doesn't it appear edited?

People who have Photoshop, but don't have Lightroom, need ACR so that they can use Raw files. Without ACR they could do nothing with those (they may also like having ACR so that they can work on other kinds of image using the same kinds of adjustments and techniques, as are used with Raw files).
People who have Lightroom, can get access to Raw files regardless whether ACR is present or not. They can use Lightroom on other kinds of image also, using the same methods. LR can pass images directly into Photoshop without passing via ACR (or else does so transparently, which amounts to substantially the same thing).
ACR does not, strictly speaking, even need to be installed for this external editing to happen. In fact, not even PS needs to be - since a different image editor can be used instead, while still retaining the Adobe Raw conversion etc.
Lightroom "subcontracts out" specialised external tasks, in this workflow, but is still your "main contractor": the image is otherwise located, viewed, managed, adjusted/presented and output entirely using LR.
So IMO we can divide image processing into:
operations that involve pixels and layers and layer masks and adjustment layers etc (of the kind done inside Photoshop)
operations that involve parametric edits (of the kind done in ACR where you are not using a Lightroom based workflow; otherwise, done inside Lightroom)
When PS is called in, that's because those tasks are impossible or unsuitable to do in Lightroom. But those tasks can't be done in ACR either - by definition, since LR and ACR have exactly the same image processing "feature set".
Lightroom is irrelevant to the Bridge + ACR + PS workflow. This workflow requires both your PS and your ACR to be current enough, to support your Raw format etc.
ACR and Bridge are irrelevant to the LR + (image editor) workflow. It is in this case, only LR which needs to be current enough to support your Raw format etc.

  • External editors and read-only folders

I'm trying to use LR4 to work on NEF images I'd imported from a read-only directory. While regular LR4 editing works, using an external editor doesn't because LR4 insists on trying to write a file into that read-only directory. Is there a way to persuade LR4 to put the files it uses to communicate with external editors somewhere else? I intentionally want to keep my NEF directories read-only because they're synced with other programs (which would get upset by LR4 sneaking extra files in there) and because I don't want to accidentally alter anything there.

    Not for secondary editors.
Only the primary Photoshop CSx can open a file wihtout creating it first. Then tiy ba use Save As from Photoshop to choose another location.

  • IPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10 - external editor issue

My Imac has been upgraded to Mountain Lion, iPhoto 11 and PS Elements 10. Now right-clicking shots in iPhoto browser brings up external editor choice and will then open PSE 10, but not the shot ( I have to drag shot to desktop, open with PSE10, save, import back to iPhoto - a huge step backwards). Same software ( iPhoto 11 and PSE10) works fine, albeit slowly) on my Macbook Pro running Lion. Please help?

You're selecting the wrong item as the editor in the Adobe PSE folder.  It's fooled a lot of us in the past.  This is the file you want to select as the external editor:
I may be preaching to the choir here but maybe the following will enlighten a bit on using PSE as the external editor:
Using Photoshop or Photoshop Elements as Your Editor of Choice in iPhoto.
1 - select Photoshop or Photoshop Elememts as your editor of choice in iPhoto's General Preference Section's under the "Edit photo:" menu.
2 - double click on the thumbnail in iPhoto to open it in Photoshop.  When you're finished editing click on the Save button. If you immediately get the JPEG Options window make your selection (Baseline standard seems to be the most compatible jpeg format) and click on the OK button. Your done.
3 - however, if you get the navigation window
that indicates that  PS wants to save it as a PS formatted file.  You'll need to either select JPEG from the menu and save (top image) or click on the desktop in the Navigation window (bottom image) and save it to the desktop for importing as a new photo.
This method will let iPhoto know that the photo has been editied and will update the thumbnail file to reflect the edit..
NOTE: With Photoshop Elements  the Saving File preferences should be configured as shown:
I also suggest the Maximize PSD File Compatabilty be set to Always.  In PSE’s General preference pane set the Color Picker to Apple as shown:
Note 1: screenshots are from PSE 10
Note:  to switch between iPhoto and PS or PSE as the editor of choice Control (right)-click on the thumbnail and select either Edit in iPhoto or Edit in External Editor from the contextual menu. If you use iPhoto to edit more than PSE re-select iPhoto in the iPhoto General preference pane. Then iPhoto will be the default editor and you can use the contextual menu to select PSE for your editor when desired.
My apologies if you've already seen the above.

  • PSE 10 as external editor for Aperture 3 - 8-bit TIFF and what color space?

    Hi all,
I'm taking the plunge and trying PSE 10 as my external editor for Aperture 3.  I understand that I need to export as 8-bit TIFF files (not 16) because PSE can't do certain things with 16-bit files.  Is that right?  Should I specify a color space in Aperture or leave it as "no profile selected"?  (I don't know much about color spaces; I'm not a pro.)  I print on an Epson RX580 Stylus Photo printer, if that matters.
I'll be grateful for any help and advice.  Thanks.

Can I suggest you buy Philip Andrews book, Advanced Photoshop Elements 10.  he explains colour spaces and much much more very clearly and exactly what can be done with 16 bit files and what you then have to change to 8 bit to accomplish.  He's written basic and advanced guides for Elements since day one.  Usually available from Amazon for under £20.

Drop down menu edit photos in external program>photoshop Elements
Go to to the image I'm working on  --- selected the image, the clicked on edit. When nothing happened I double clicked the image. Still elements didn't open. Then I opened the Elements editor, went back to iphoto and tried the entire process again. the photo still didn't open on Elements 13 for editing.
I have 3 Elements 13 books as well as looked on line--all my references say the exact same thing ---- iPhoto>Preferences>advanced>edit in external program>photoshop Elements
I uninstalled and reinstalled both iPhoto as well as Elements.
I spoke with application technical support.  There appears to be nothing wrong with my copy of iPhoto.  However there is no support from Adobe.  I waited for over 1.5 hours for chat support several days ago, and finally gave up.

You are probably choosing the obvious file rather than the correct file as the PSE editor. The actual editor is hidden away inside the Support Files folder. The PSE file at the top level of the PSE folder in Applications is just an alias for the welcome screen and what you're describing is exactly what happens when you choose that. You want this one:

  • Edit in external editor with lightroom adjustments issue LR5 and PS CC

Since several days when I try (in Lightroom) 5 to edit an adjusted file (NEF, JPEG or TIFF) in Photoshop CC as external editor (with the option "edit a copy with lightroom adjustments") in many cases the adjustments ar not visible in photoshop CC, or only partial visible, and sometimes the file opens not at all. Removal of the preference files of LR 5 and PS CC and  a whole new installation of LR 5 didn't resolve the issue. I have a macbookPRO with Mac OS 10.8.5 and the most recent versions of LR 5 and PS CC. Has anyone experienced this problem and what can be a solution.

I have no idea, but have you tried File / Catalog Settings/ General tab: Relaunch and Optimize. Relates to the database.

  • I have set up photoshop elements as external editor in iPhoto but I cannot get the edited photo to open in iPhoto. When I save the photo Elements asks where do I want to save it and iPhoto is not an option.

I have set up Photoshop Elements11 as the External Editor in iPhoto just as Terence Devlin said. However when I save the edited photo it does not appear in iPhoto. A drop down menu asks where I want to save the photo and I do not know what to choose. Also should I choose, "save" or "save as"? I should be really grateful for your help.

I suggest opening iPhoto and reverting back to iPhoto in the Preferences for photo editing. Quit iPhoto. Restart your Mac for good measure. Open iPhoto and again choose Photoshop Elements in Preferences as the editing app.
As far as editing, I don't have PE, but I have another editing app form the Mac App Store, ColorStrokes. I have been experimenting with using it for editing iPhoto photos and it works flawlessly. After setting ColorStroke as the editing app, I open a photo in iPhoto and click the Edit button in the menu bar below the photo. Color Stoke immediately opens with the photo and I complete my editing. When I have finished editing I choose to Save the photo, leave the name the same and agree to replace the iPhoto photo of the same name. I quit ColorStroke and the photo in iPhoto now has all of my edits from ColorStroke.
Should I decide that I prefer the original photo, I open the photo in iPhoto and choose Revert to Original in the Photos pulldown menu.

  • Editing in external editor: Save back as JPG and (auto-) add to library

I want to use external edit (in my case: Adobe Photoshop Elements) for editing features not available in LR3 (for example: skew) and easily save back as JPG. The source in LR3 is a DNG-image.
LR3 offers easy workflows out-to-external-editor>back-to-LR3 if you save back as TIFF or PSD.
But, I didn't find any easy or not extremely clumsy way to saving the edited photo back as JPG to LR3 and having it organized "close" to the original/source-DNG (preferably stacked).
    Any ideas out there?

Thanks for the suggestion! If have taken your answer to dig into my problem for just another time - with positive result.
The 'save as TIFF file' option in PSE after image export from LR opens a detailed dialogue box offering amongst others 'jpg compression' within a TIFF-container (never realized this before, never heard about this concept, my fault). So my goals are met: Having an efficient process to finetune some images in PSE, having the results automatically stacked in the LR library module and having a considerable lower file-size footprint as compared to e.g. Photoshops native or TIFF with zip compression.

  • Just upgraded to PS CS5 from CS3 and LR will not recognize CS5 as external editor

I just upgraded from PS CS3 to CS5 then uninstalled CS3.  LR 2.7 is not recognizing PS (CS5) as the default external editor and I don't get the "edit as smart object in PS", "Open as layers in Photoshop", etc… options  when I right-click an image and select "edit in" as they are now greyed out.  I've tried to repair LR and reinstall but nothing makes it recognize PS CS5 as the default external editor.  Any ideas?  Thx in advance.

I ended up reinstalling CS5 and that solved the problem with one exception.  It is now the default external editor and I have the option to export to PS as a smart object - However, I do not have the options to export to PS in layers or export to PS as Photomerge or Export to PS as HDR.  I did have these options with CS3.

Thanks Larry. That certainly gives me some understanding. Can't imagine I'm the only Aperture user with that concern, so I certainly hope Adobe and others will fill the void. Without that feature, Photos is pretty much a non-started for me.
