Canon 5D RAW files not opening in Photoshop CS3

Windows Vista Home Premium SP1.
Hey Ho!
I did a photoshoot at a friend's studio last week, using his Canon 5D as it was all set up with the lights etc etc.
He saved the files for me as RAW - *.CR2 - as I am used to using with my 450D. The only difference I can see is that his files are numbered like this:
_MG_1791.CR2
whereas mine would have an "I" at the front - like it would be:
IMG_1791.CR2
I cannot open his files in my Photoshop CS3 - I get the error "Cannot complete your request as it is not the right type of file" or similar. I have no problems opening my own CR2 files from my 450D.
I have searched this issue on the Adobe forums, as well as other photography forums, and they say to download the plugin update remove the old one and replace it with the new. I have tried following step-by-step, but I still can't get it to work.
If anyone has come across a similar problem, I would be greatful to hear what you did.
Thanks in advance.

I am trying the DNG converter again, and it seems to be converting this time - maybe I didn't do it right last time... I hope that CS3 will be able to read the DNG files - will let you know how it goes shortly!

  • Canon 60D - RAW files not opening

I have recently taken pictures with a Canon 60D and i am unable to open the raw files in ACR.
I am running PS CS5 and have ACR 6.7.
I have read forums which say that the 60D require 6.2 and yet i am still unable to view the files.
Other applications as the Digital Photo Professional open them fine when i have downloaded the drivers for that camera.
    Can any one help?

The raw file you posted is not corrupt; however, it is from a 650D which wasn’t supported in ACR 6.7.  See screen capture, below.
Do you have a 60D file that doesn’t work that you can post?
You could convert the 650D raw files to DNGs to process them in CS5/ACR 6.7, or upgrade to CS6/ACR 8.1 for $200, or subscribe to the creative cloud single-app, or perhaps expierment with Lightroom, with the longest timeframe would be available with LR 5.2 RC that expires Sept 30.

  • NEF RAW files from my Nikon D5300 will not open in Photoshop CS3

Is there a plug-in or update I can download that will make it possible for my Photoshop CS3 to open NEF files in RAW.
I noticed a similar discussion a couple of years ago and I followed the advice and as far as I can tell I have the most up-to-date version of my software, and the Camera Raw plug-in is Version 4.6.0.30
I also have the same problem using CS5. Both versions say they cannot recognize the file type. Can I use a converter to make them a different kind of RAW file, but still a RAW format? I would prefer to simply be able to open them in Photoshop for editing.
Any help is greatly appreciated! Thanks.
    Barb

I just checked the compatibility list again, and the D5300 requires Camera Raw 8.3 (Not 7.3) or Lightroom 5.3. You have Lightroom 5, but what exact version of Lightroom 5 do you have? It might require that you update your Camera Raw and your Lightroom in order to have support in both Photoshop and Lightroom.
You can check your version of Camera Raw by going to the help menu in Photoshop, then about plug-ins and then Camera Raw. The dialog that appears will indicate what version of Camera Raw you have installed. It should not be necessary for you to use the DNG converter unless you feel compelled to.

  • Camera Raw files not opening.  I've updated the latest plug-in.  I've uninstalled & re-installed photoshop.  Could I have removed a necessary file when cleaning up programs?

I've installed bridge and they don't open in that.  I cleaned up my programs and removed a bunch of unnecessary junk, could I have removed something I needed?  The camera raw files are CR2 from a Canon D6.
I've spent far too much time trying to figure this out, so any suggestions are much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Thanks, Barbara, that did the trick!  I deleted the old file rather than renaming it.  I was in fact trying to install 5.6.
    Cheers,

  • Canon 50D RAW files not showing

    Hi all,
I just got a Canon 50D as an addition to the current 400D (Rebel in the USA).
I am shooting 100% RAW files, and I am having a problem with previewing them.
I downloaded and installed the Camera RAW 5.2 fro Adobe and Lightroom and Photoshop have no problems opening the files.
The quick view show only a white (generic) icon, Preview a Question mark, while the RAWs from 400D show without a problem.
I can sort of live with it as I use Lightoom for all viewing and editing, but it is a bit annoying that a quick look with the Quick Look is impossible.
Anyone has /had this issue? Any solutions please?

OK, here's a boy who answers his own questions...
The Apple Camera RAW update 2.4 does NOT list 50D as a new supported camera model, and yet... what do you know... it does include support for Canon 50D.
    Done!
    Hope it helps someone.

As to the Adobe RAW, I thought that it also becomes a "system extension" (for the lack of a better wording) which COULD help, and which obviously doesn't. Thanks for the info.
In regards to the Apple Update, I just assumed that the latest would contain all previous updates, or if it did not, upon install inform that one needs the previous one installed first (Just like Java updates do) - which, again, obviously it doesn't. Again, thanks for the info and the link. I am downloading as I type this, so will see soon - after a restart, so an edit is coming...
Strange thing with the yesterday's RAWs working 100% and today's not at all.
Hopefully the 2.3 will do the trick.
    Stand by.
We have a problem, the 2.3 tells me that it DOES NOT NEED to be installed as a newer version is already installed. This would imply that previous updates are indeed included in 2.4 (just like the security updates - enough to install the latest one.
Well, that's a bit of a problem, innit?
Any way to manually pick the 2.4 off the system?

  • Struggling to get raw files to open in Photoshop CS2

    Feeling foolish.
Have new Canon 5D Mark II and shot first raw files. Went to open them in CS2 (my old 20D files opened fine there) and got error message.
Came to adobe site, download new camera_raw.8bi, followed instructions to move it into right folder, archived old. Nothing. Same error. Checked the "Help > about plug-ins >" and it only shows the one raw.
Went back to adobe site and looked into DNG converter (not sure why I need that -- can't I just open the files in CS2 like before?) and downloaded that zip (5.1). No instructions that I can find anywhere on what to do with those files. Dragged the .exe onto my desktop and fired it up, pointed it at one of the raw files and . .  . got an error "there was an error parsing the file."
Any help would be greatly appreciated. In particular, I would like to be able to open the files in CS2, if possible.
    Thanks

Thanks. Bottom line for others: if you have a 5D and CS2, you can't open raw files directly. You must use the (right) DNG converter. The link in the tech note brought me to a .exe (not a .zip) that installed the correct version of DNG converter, which solved the problem. Thanks again.
You almost have it right.  You do not need the "right" DNG converter.  You always want to use the most current version of the DNG converter.  It will convert files from the most recent cameras supported by ACR, and those DNG files are compatible with any version of the ACR from 2.4 to the most current version.

  • Raw files not opening in Adobe CS4

I just did the update for photoshop CS4 after finding out that I could not open Raw files, but after the update I still can't open them. I own the Adobe Photoshop CS4, and a Nikon D3100 camera. Is there something I have to download in order to get my files to open? I noticed the Camera Raw update 6.3, but that's for CS5 and is not backwards compatible...

Well, my joke stands corrected by the Great Insider hisself.
The funny thing is that I think this particular support policy is good, yet here we find ourselves arguing.  It would be rather nasty but for the DNG converter solution, which I DID mention, and which turns it around completely and makes Adobe the good guys.

  • Canon CRW Raw files not supported in Preview, Nikon supported

With Panther and Jaguar, Canon RAW files in crw format were supported in Preview. In Tiger, these files are not. Also, when importing these files from camera or CF reader, canon raw files tagged with .thm! What is this? an 8 kb "document" that renders file corrupt. Did not happen in Panther or Jaguar. And the problem is NOT my camera because it works fine on Windows PC and on previous OS mac.
here's the kicker: Nikon NEF raw format is NOW supported by Preview, but was NOT supported in Panther and Jaguar.
So, I called AppleCare and they say NO raw formats should be supported by Preview.
Another example of how Apple has lost compatibility and quality control?
Anyone else who uses RAW files in photography have same experience?
    Thanks.
    Michael.

The easiest way to edit plist files is with Property List Editor, which you get installed if you install the Developer stuff that comes with your OS install disks. If you don't want to add all that stuff your computer, it is possible to edit with a a straight text editing program in plain text. Personally I find that too confusing. I put a copy of my edited Raw.plist file up:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/Raw.plist.zip
It has the substitution of the S50 for the original S60. It also lists the S70, so your Canon S70 should be working. If it isn't working either, then this hack won't help you. Download and unzip the file.
Because of permissions--you aren't supposed to be mucking about in this area--the easiest way to proceed is using the Terminal. The path is, unfortunately, extremely long. You open the System folder, then the Library folder, then Frameworks, ApplicationServices.framework, then Versions/A/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources. You should now see a list of files that includes the Raw.plist file. Leave that Finder window open.
Launch Terminal from your /Applications/Utilities folder. If you have never used it, nor ever used a sudo command you will get a friendly warning when you issue the first command. We want to make sure that the original file doesn't get lost. So type:
    sudo mv
and a space, then drag the Raw.plist file into the Terminal and drop it. The Terminal will helpfully fill in the path. Add a space, then copy the path up to the file name and paste, then type RawOld.plist as the new file name and hit the Return key. You'll need to type your password, which is NOT echoed to the screen, so type carefully and hit the return key again.
Next you want to add the modified Raw.plist file to the folder. Using a sudo copy command will insure that it belongs to system. So type
    sudo cp
add a space and drag the new Raw.plist file into the Terminal window. Paste in the path to the folder (it should still be on the clipboard) hit return, give your password and hit return again. I don't remember whether it was necessary to restart the Finder or not. You might want to do a restart and then Repair Permissions, just to be on the safe side.

  • Canon 70D RAW file not recognized in PSE 11

I tried opening a RAW file from my Canon 70D in my Elements 11.  It did not recognize it.  I read Elements 12 can read it.  Can I upgrade to 12 for free?  If not how can I get  my Elements 11 to open the RAW files?

Elements 12 will open the files if you update the camera raw plug-in to the latest version.
When the version number to the left of the decimal point increases then you have to pay more money.  For Elements this is once per year in the fall.  Upgrading from PSE11 to PSE12 would be an upgrade-price, which is cheaper than the non-upgrade price.
You can use the free DNG Converter to convert your raw files to DNGs and open then with an older versions of the camera raw plug-in.
Download the latest DNG Converter from a link on this page:

  • Raw files not opening again

I have Elements 7, use Windows 7 and recently changed my camera to Canon EOS 550D, [from 1000D]  but now cannot open raw files.
I have downloaded the update 5.6 plug-in, which I believe is correct.
Where do I save the plug-in for it to become active -  I do generally have a problem with plug-ins as not very techi - so clear instructions without abreviations would be brill.
Any help will be gratefully received - Thanks

I'm afraid you need the 5.7 version of camera raw, but the 5.7
or newer versions aren't compatiple with pse 7.
One solution is to use the Free dng converter and convert copies of your 550d
files to the dng format, which pse 7 should open in camera raw.

  • Canon T3i RAW Files not supported

I just purchased the Canon T3i and its RAW files are not supported on my Photoshop CS5.   What can I do?

    Hello!
Even if 6.4.1 was the first one to support your camera, given the fact that each versions brings small bug fixes, I'd recommend to update to the latest version for CS5, Camera Raw 6.7, you can get it at this link:
    Windows: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5371
    Mac: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5370
I would recommend also to download and install the latest version of the DNG converter 7.2, in case you want to process files made in cameras that were released after Camera Raw 6.7:
    Win: http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=5486

  • Canon 70d CR2 files not opening

Hi.  I'm sure this has probably been asked before, but I am struggling here.  I have the canon 70d, and as my previous photoshop elements 9 couldn't open the RAW files I decided to get the latest version of elements 12.  Now I am really upset as this still doesn't open the RAW files.  I have gone to the update section but still no joy.  Have I wasted my money?  Is there a fix for this?  Please help.

Adobe doesn't create new installation disks with each update of Camera Raw. Camera Raw will be updated usually at least six times during the course of one Photoshop Elements major release version. It is normal to update Adobe software as soon as it is installed from a disk.
