Canon 5d video file limit.

Hi All,
Hope someone can save me a bit of mucking around with some advice. I have a 16 gig card for my 5d and i thought this would extend my video time on the 5d but i have read somewhere that the video limit on the 5d is a windows file-size thing and nothing to do with the 5d per Se.
Has anyone done any recording on a 5d with a 16 gig card and if so what happens? When it reaches its 12 or so minutes, can you just switch it off and restart recording on that card or is 12 minutes all you can possibly fit on the card?
Hope i have articulated the problem OK
thanks for any advice.
Simon..

According to the <a target=new href=http://gdlp01.c-wss.com/gds/6/0300001676/01/eos5dmkii-im-en.pdf<b>manual,</b></a> you can also shoot for about 24 minutes at 640x480. (but who wants that?) It also says that a fully charged battery will give you roughly 80-90 min of video time depending on temp. That may be the main problem right now because finding batteries in stock presently is as hard as finding the camera!<br /><br />> I also heard rumblings about Olympics press rules and different access for still and video photographers. <br /><br />Yep, John. That's true for many sporting events (won't be surprised if these new "hybrids" change the rules), but I think the main reason for the limited time is the FAT32 file size limit. <br /><br />-phil

  • Elements 9 Freezes on Adding Canon DSLR video files

I just purchased Premiere Elements 9 to edit my Canon T2i video files.  When I try to add the video files by going to Get Media - From File, the progress bar pops up and goes away quickly like it is finished processing the addition to my organizer, but the video file never shows up.  If I go to Filter By and select the project I am working on to only show the project files, I get the Windows thinking icon and that is all the further I can get Elements to go.  After 1/2 hour or so I close elements.  When I open the project file back up, the video I tried to add earlier shows up.  I don't think I should have to kill the program and reopen it everytime I try to add a video file to the project.  What gives?  My computer is a Core i5 M430 with 4gb of ram on Windows 7 Pro 64bit.

Got a response from Adobe support and this is what they suggested:
"Solution 1: Update to Premiere Elements 9.0.1 update
    Do one of the following:
    * Launch Adobe Premiere Elements 8 and choose Help > Updates.
    * Download and install updates from the below mentioned link.
Solution 2: Update the graphic card driver.
Many video card manufacturers frequently update their software drivers. If you haven't recently updated the video card driver, contact the video card manufacturer for an updated driver, or download one from the manufacturer's website.
Solution 3: Update quick time player.
Open Quicktime player> click help menu > click update.
Solution 4: Re-create the preferences files.
Re-create the Adobe application preferences file to eliminate problems caused by a damaged preferences file. For specific instructions, search the application Help system for "restore preferences" or "re-create preferences." .
    Mac Hard disk > Users > username > Library > application support > adobe.photoshop.com.plist
(please remove the adobe.photoshop.com.plist file from this location and relaunch the application and kindly make sure the application is closed before your perform this step)
Solution 5 : Install or run the Adobe application from within a new user account.
Occasionally, a user account can become corrupted and prevent the installer from accessing or creating the necessary files and folders. Create an account, log in to the new account, and then try to install or run the Adobe application. For information on creating a user account, see "Creating a new user account" in the Mac OS X Help.
    Solution 6: Remove third-party plug-ins.
Applies to Acrobat, Adobe Reader, Adobe Premiere Pro, Adobe Premiere Elements, After Effects, Bridge, Fireworks, Illustrator, InDesign, Photoshop, Photoshop Elements, and Photoshop Lightroom.
Remove third-party plug-ins from the application plug-ins folder, and restart the application. If the problem recurs, move the plug-ins back to the application plug-ins folder. If the problem doesn't recur, identify conflicting plug-ins.
    To identify conflicting plug-ins:
    1. Move one third-party plug-in back to the application plug-ins folder.
    2. Restart the application, and try to re-create the problem.
    3. If the problem doesn't recur, repeat step 1. If the problem does recur, contact the developer of the plug-in that you last moved, and inquire about an update.
Solution 7. Run the application while no other applications are running.
To maximize available RAM and reduce the chance that another application conflicts with the Adobe application, quit open applications (including virus-protection utilities). Then restart the Adobe application. If applications don't quit as expected, force quit them by choosing Force Quit from the Apple menu.
Note: Don't force quit the Finder, which is the core Mac OS component.
Solution 8: Install or run the application with the Login Items disabled.
To disable nonessential extensions located in the user accounts Login Items folder, press Shift while you restart the computer. Pressing Shift disables any applications that are in the Login Items folder.
This should resolve your issue. If it does, please let us know, however in case it does not; please revert with any new information that you might want to add which will help us in resolving your issue."
Nothing helped until I installed PRE9 under a different login.  I appears my install must have been bad from the start.  I had originally downloaded the trial and then used the key from the DVD copy I bought to convert it to a licensed version.  I'm thinking something went wrong in that whole deal, should've just reinstalled from the DVD when I got it.  Oh well, all seems well now and I can finally get some editing done!  It actually seems to work smoother than Vegas 9 did.  Could probably use a bit more RAM though.  I only have 4GB.  I know PRE9 can only use 4gb, but windows 7 and background stuff uses over 1GB when the computer is idle, so 8GB might give PRE9 a bit more headroom.

  • 4GB video file limit removed?

One of my big gripes with the AppleTV was the 4GB video file limit. Can anyone confirm whether this limit has been officially removed?
The reason I ask is that I recently had a 4.02GB movie file in my library which is shared to the AppleTV and I was surprised to see it listed on the AppleTV shared movies. It played fine. I have since tried a movie file over 6GB and this too plays fine.
I hope this is a feature and not something that Apple will remove in future updates.

    jtw13 wrote:
Previously, any movie file over 4GB was never synced to the AppleTV or shown as available for streaming. My understanding at the time was that the AppleTV software did not support over 4GB, as iTunes itself would load them and play them fine.
    So it seemed.
If you look at the maths, a 32-bit number can store file poisition data (to the nearest byte) up to a maximum of 4GB. In order to reference files over 4GB, you needed to use 64-bit addressing.
    Absolutely.
I haven't seen anything official, which is why I am asking.
This is a user to user forum so you won't get an official reply (usually).
My answer is based on several anecdotal reports here that >4GB files have been usable of late.
As far as I can remember there was never an 'official' 4GB limit in the first place, just again anecdotally in user experience it appeared to be so.

  • Macbook, Final Cut Express and Canon 5D video files

    Hello everyone.
I intend to purchase my first Apple Mac soon. It will probably be the Aluminium Macbook with 4GB RAM.
I am an avid photographer and use the Canon EOS 5D Mark II. I can handle all the processing of the still photographs without a problem but I would like to take advantage of the cameras HD video capability. I know nothing about video editing but I have read that Final Cut is about the best video editor out there. My PC struggles to even play the movies from my camera, let alone edit them.
I have the following questions that I hope some of you can answer:
    1. Will the standard Macbook with 4GB RAM be able to handle and edit the large video files (1.2GB for a 5 minute video clip)? I would prefer not to buy the Macbook Pro if possible. The computer will only be used for video editing occasionally. I will not be making 90 minute Hollywood style productions... just 5 minute short films once in a while.
    2. Does the cheapest version of Final Cut (Final Cut Express) handle files from the Canon 5D2?
    3. I know the video from the Canon 5D2 is generally disliked because it is 30fps and is in a strange format. However, I am not able to change this and I will not be buying a dedicated video camera as I rarely shoot video. So, I need to know if the Macbook and Final Cut Express can do the business with these files. Do you have any advice on how to handle the 5D2 files?
    Any advice greatly appreciated.

Will the standard Macbook with 4GB RAM be able to handle and edit the large video files (1.2GB for a 5 minute video clip)?
Yes. You have a lot of hard-drive space with the Macbook Aluminum, so that shouldn't be an issue but you might consider using an external hard-drive to store your media if you ever start making longer movies. To tell you the truth, the Macbook with 2GB of RAM would probably work just as well. I recently upgraded mine and it didn't make much of a difference. Either way though, the Macbook should work fine with Final Cut, mine does. You might consider getting the one with the 2.4GHz processor, I have the feeling that will make more of a difference when editing than the extra RAM.
Does the cheapest version of Final Cut (Final Cut Express) handle files from the Canon 5D2?
Sort of, but it doesn't edit them natively. You can either drop the files in the timeline and render it out and it will work, or, if you don't want to render whenever you make a change, a better technique would be to first convert the clips using an application like the free [MPEG Streamclip|http://www.squared5.com> to something FCE can edit natively such as Apple Intermediate Codec. It's not as simple as drag-and-drop, but it will work.
Do you have any advice on how to handle the 5D2 files?
See above. I recommend the Streamclip conversion over the rendering though. If you have a lot of files to convert, Streamclip has a batch conversion setting so you can set what to convert to once and Streamclip will convert all the files. Converted files can then be edited in FCE without any particular problems.
You should convert using these settings:
Compression: +Apple Intermediate Codec for HD or DV-NTSC for SD+
*Frame Size:* +(A supported FCE frame size, for example 1920x1080, 1440x1080, 720x480, etc. The supported frame size you choose should be as close to your original frame size as possible)+
    *Frame Rate:* 29.97
    Sound: +Uncompressed Stereo 48kHz+
Keep in mind that the Macbook Aluminum lacks a Firewire port, so if that is detrimental to your use you should consider getting the white Macbook or the Macbook Pro. I believe the Canon 5D Mark II uses USB for transfer though, so it shouldn't be that much of a problem.

  • Import Canon HF20 video-files into Mac

    Hello!
I just bought a new camcorder, Canon Vixia HF20. I installed the following cd called; Digital video, solution disk, which I was supposed to use to import the video-files into my mac.
When I installed it, I plugged in the camcorder with the USB, but the program says "no camera was found".
It tried to set the USB connection type to computer/printer, but it didn't work...
Is there somebody who could help me with this please? I think it is ridiculous if a well-known producer as Canon cannot make their programs for macs! It has to be a solution to this?
    Thanks.

    Found out myself.

  • Canon SX50 video file size.

I transferred a few video clips from the camera to the PC. Two of them seemed to transfer ok but would not play on the PC? The file size is showing as 0kb on the PC. Is the file size too large?? Its around 1gb.

Explorer in XP has, IIRC (and it's bitten me a few times, so I think I do), problems dealing with large files. I resorted to using Teracopy for moving even 5D RAW files around and they were nowhere near 1 GB. You might try using ZB to move the files and see if it does beter.

  • Is there a limit to the number of video files that can be included in a captivate 6 project?

I have a project that includes 15 slide video files.  When I preview the project in html or publish it, I get a green rectangle where the video should be on about the 10th slide.  Even if I rearrange the order of the slides, always on about the 10th one I get a green rectangle where the video should be.  Is there a limit to the number of slide videos you can have in a project?

    Craig,
It was image.cpp line 2770.  I am told (by another person in the company that has seen this) that it has been seen on several machines, always PXI controllers, but not on all PXI controllers.  I am told that it is not always image.cpp that reports the error, but for me it was always the same line of code identified by the error message.  I did not have a chance to do any experimenting to find a particular threshold number of mnu files.  I may be able to find error logs.  I currently sent the controller to our IT department, doing a windows XP repair, just in case there was something corrupted in the system itself.
The error was reproducible.  This installation at one time must have included real-time / FPGA, because on the opening screen I ge the drop-down ring for selecting a target.  If I click on this drop down ring, I get the crash on line 2770, every time.  If, instead I open an empty new VI, I am able to switch to the block diagram by selecting the window directly with the mouse, but if I try to pull down on the "window" menu to do "show block diagram", I get the crash on line 2770, every time.  Because the user-defined mnu files are now deleted, I would have to create them again, or find a way to reinstall them, to reproduce the error at this point.

Hi this is my first post on this site.
I am having trouble trying to import video files from Canon Vixia hfs10 to imovie'11. The computer does not even recognize this camcorder. When I do a PC connection, iphoto comes up, but all it tells me to import are the pictures that I have taken.

When I try to import it on imovie, I only get an option for facetime camera and not my vixia.

  • Cannot transfer videos taken from my Canon camera(MOV files) to the iPad 4. They have previous with no problems at all. Is this an update issue?

Cannot transfer videos taken from my Canon camera(MOV files) to the iPad 4. They have previous with no problems at all. Is this an update issue? I tried to sync them over using iTunes last night but it says that they cannot be played on the device. But they have previously

1, you can't at the moment, though with iOS 5 in the Autumn, from http://www.apple.com/ios/ios5/features.html#photos :
Even organize your photos in albums — right on your device
2, by removing it from you synced from and re-syncing. Only photos taken with the iPad, copied to it via the camera connection kit, or saved from emails/websites etc can be deleted directly on the iPad (either via the trashcan icon in the top right corner if viewing the photo in full screen, or via the icon of the box with the arrow coming out of it in thumbnail view)
3, the location of the photos that you synced to the iPad should be listed on the iPad's Photos tab when connected to your computer's iTunes.
4, you can copy the photos from your iPad to your computer : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT4083 . You should also be able to delete them from the iPad as part of the transfer process to your computer, and it's then your choice whether to add them to your sync photo list so as to copy them back to the iPad. Copying them to your computer would allow you to organise them into folders and therefore be able to sync them back into separate albums.
5, I don't use Dropbox either. There are some third-party browser apps in the iTunes App Store that allow you to download pages so that you can view them when offline e.g. Atomic Web (the whole page is saved within Atomic Web, it doesn't place a photo into the Photos app)
6, deleting content should help. If you remove an app from your iPad then you also remove the content that it's got on the iPad - so if you then decide to reinstall it back onto the iPad then you will need to manually add back any content that you want in it. None of the Apple built-in apps (including Photos) can be removed from the iPad

  • Video files don't display Metadata (Canon 60D)

I use Lightroom for archiving both stills and video. I use two cameras for my work: a Canon 5D MK II and a Canon 60D. This being the case the filter function is very useful as I can search for images from each camera separately (and check exposure info etc).
I have no problems with the 5D. But Lightroom doesn't display any metadata for video files from the 60D. Interestingly the image files do not have this issue and display the metadata I need: Exposure, focal length etc. Its just the video files... They contain no info. If 60D video files are present in the catalogue the filter bar at the top reads "Unknown Camera" and displays the (correct) number of 60D video files. I am up to date with Firmware 3.3.
    Any suggestions? Thanks!

I think you have it! Thank you. Yes, there are no sidecar files with the 60D video files (only with the 5D video files). But why isn't the 60D providing these files?... Do you know how I can fix this? Thanks again!

  • How do I transfer video files shot from my camera (Canon 5DMk2) which is in .MOV format into iTunes ?

how do I transfer video files shot from my camera (Canon 5DMk2) which is in .MOV format into iTunes ?  My photos and video files are first imported into Aperture then synced with iTunes. However, itunes does not capture the Video files but uploads the phtos from Aperture during sync.
I tried dragging the video files into iTunes but it still would not be captured into iTunes ?
Appreciate any help on this. Thanks

Open them in Quicktime Player 10.1. Then, use Quicktime's Share menu > iTunes.  That will create an iTunes compatible version and automatically load it into your iTunes movie library.

  • Canon 650 (rebel T4i) video file

I would know if canon eos 650's (Rebel T4i USA) video file (MOV,MPEG4 AVC/H.264) is supported by Pro CS 5.5

Highly likely since all the Canon SDLRs use the Canon Digix processor.
H.264 is a standard that Premiere well supports.
The only thing that I think is unknown is Canon's new AVC-Intra mode (they call it "I" mode). But I think that's only on the 7D and higher with the Digix 5 processor.
It should just work (TM) since Intra (aka I-frames) is the basic building block of H.264 (B and P frames being the others).

  • Canon 5d mkIII video file won't import

Curious problem.  I've imported about 20 video files that were shot with a Canon 5D MkIII into FCPX (CF camera card>portable drive>FCPX).  All of the files, save one, import with no problem.  One won't but it plays just fine from the finder.  I've run diagnostics on the portable drive and everything passes.
    Any ideas?
    Thanks.

I have the 5D mk iii and have not experienced this problem. I drag the files from the CF card onto a dedicated partition on a drive (contains nothing else, only my .mov files for import into FCP X).
I then launch FCP X and it recognises the drive as a camera and I use Camera Import (Cmd+i) to mark my in and out points and import.
    Works every time for me.
Alternatively (on this occasion) try using an App like MPEG Streamclip (free) to convert the clip to ProRes 422.

  • Premier Elements 7.0 doesn't seem to recognize my video files on my Canon Rebel T5i...?! HELP!

I have tried to load the video files into Elements directly from my camera AND from a folder on my Windows PC, but no matter what Elements doesn't recognize these files and won't let me add them to any projects. Any suggestions?  thanks in advance!

I can't install the gspot program as I have a "managed" computer (work computer)...sorry!
When I plug the camera into my PC (running Windows 7) it pops up and I can see that all the video files are .mov files. I can play them through windows media player just fine. When I go to "add media" in elements, i get the "no valid files found".
I have tried to save the files in a folder, and same thing..."no valid files".
This is the first time I've used this software--it was just added to my computer. When I open the program I get the message (second image) not sure if this has anything to do with the issue.
I'm not the most technical person (probably obvious)...but usually have no problem navigating new technology..!  thank you!

  • Is there a limit to how big the video file can be, storage size or pixel size, when inserting in a powerpoint?

When I add a video file to a ppt file using adobe presenter 9 it will now work when it reaches that slide.  the video will start but at about 30 seconds in it will tear to green.  Sometimes it will return and sometimes it will just stop after that.  When it comes back it will continue until about 40-45 seconds in then on a fade to black it will not play anymore. The slider will continue as if it is playing but no output is seen on the screen.
The video file in question is 165MB, 1920 x1080 pixels MP4
If I convert it to smaller, 65MB, 1080 x 608 MP4 file everything works with no issue.
Can anyone shed any light on this?
    Things I have checked:
    Adobe updated
    Office Updated
    Windows Updated
    Drivers updated
    64 bit consistency
    Source file validation
    Rebooted computer
    Flash installed
    Flash trust enabled

Do you notice a quality difference when playing the two videos in Presenter? I'm not a fan of HD video in Presenter, mainly because of the reduced screen real estate that is available for video. I find that around 720 X 480 usually works just fine, and keeps the file bloat down (as you have seen just in your change you lost 100 MB). I don't believe there is a limitation on what you can place in Presenter, but it may be a matter of what can be delivered effectively. There may also be something odd in the encoding of the 1080 version of your video. If you re-encode it at the same resolution, with the settings of the lesser resolution video, does it play back as expected?
