Canon 5DIII images cropped in ACR

Hi,
I have an odd situation I can't figure out and thought maybe someone might have a solution
I am working on a MacBook Pro running 10.7.4 using CS6 and ACR 7.1.
I was shooting video with the 5DIII yesterday and shot a few stills as I was working. I shot in RAW for the stills.
When I look at the still image in Photo Mechanic, I see the full image and Photo Mechanic tells me it's 5760x3840 in size.
When I open the image in Photoshop 6 using Camera Raw it shows up cropped 5760x3240 - the 16x9 video crop. But I can't get to the full image - the crop tool in Camera Raw doesn't let me reveal anymore of the image. I can't figure out how to see the whole photo.
Anyone else had this problem? Things have worked fine when I've only shot stills.
thanks very much.
Will

FYI, on my PC (don't have a Mac here) I just opened a 5DMark3 image to see if maybe there was just a typo with the internal size for images from that camera internally, but it showed the native resolution as the expected 5760x3840.
What does the list of conversion sizes say in the Workflow Options (via the link at the bottom center of the Camera Raw dialog)?

  • 5DIII images in Aperture have a line at the top

I got my new Canon 5DIII on the weekend and before importing the first lot of images, I updated Aperture as I'd seen the software update announcing support for 5DIII raws.
All images when viewed through Aperture have a thin (possibly 1-pixel wide) line at the top of a landscape image, or to the left or right on a portrait image.  The line is not a single colour, but seems to be made up of a distortion of colours from the image itself.  I can see that the raw images on the disk when viewed through the Finder do not have the line (PHEW!), and the line is not there when I export an image from Aperture.  So, given that it only appears inside Aperture, it's not a huge problem, and I'm certainly happy that it's not the camera, but it's still annoying.  Another point is that the line is not there during that 3-second "Processing" period while it's first looking at a new RAW; it only appears after it's successfully processed it.
Anyone else experienced this, or can someone try it out and look for it?  I'm at work at the moment so can't upload a screenshot, but happy to do so later if required.
    cheers,
    Ian

  • IPad SD card reader not reading JPGS from Canon 5dIII

Have a brand new iPad (retina) and the SD to lighting connector.
When I insert a Lexar Professional 16GB 400x SD card with images from my Canon 5DIII, iPad opens the Photo app and I can see the thumbnails, however when I try to import, instead of a green icon with a check mark, I get a red one with an exclamation point (an error). The photos are not imported.
I used the same SD card in my Canon G12 and images from that camera import just fine. When I reduce the resolution on the 5DIII, the images import fine.
I have read there is a 32GB limit on the size of teh SD card, but I suppose there must also be a limit on individual file sizes as well. If so, I cannot find it documented.
Does anyone know if this is the case?

In the past I've copied MP4 films via an SD card with the kit and been able to play them, but a film bought from iTunes didn't play (you can't copy content to the Videos app via the kit, only to the Photos app). Also the kit only recognises content that is in a particular format - the card has to have a DCIM directory off its root, with the photos/videos underneath it with filenames exactly 8 characters long (no spaces) plus file extension.

  • Photoshop Elements 7 Canon RAW image

I just purchased and loaded Elements 7, because I couldn't use Elements 5 to read Canon RAW (.CR2) images. I was told that Elements 7 would read Canon RAW files.
I get the same error message when I try to load a Canon RAW image. Message is "Cannot open Canon IMG_001.CR2 because it is the wrong type of fie". The file format type, .CR2, is not even listed as an option. I am using Windows Vista Home Premium. Camera is Canon 50D.
What do I do? If Elements 7 won't read Canon RAW, then I guess I need to return it.
    Thanks,
    Howard

    Howard,
You may have been given misleading information -- PSE 5 should indeed read Canon 50D raw files. According to this Adobe tech note, PSE 5 supports Adobe Camera Raw 4.6:
    http://www.adobe.com/go/kb407110
and according to the ACR 4.6 download page, it supports the Canon 50D:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4036
So if you really didn't want to spend the money for upgrading, you could return PSE 7.
If you want to keep PSE 7, then that error message indicates that either you have the wrong version of ACR installed or it is installed incorrectly. The Adobe tech note above walks you through how to fix it.

  • Canon 5DIII conversion of ProRGB or Adobe RGB to sRGB over-saturation

I shot a Canon 5DII in raw for three years & posted a lot of my work on the web.  I did PP on the image with a calibrated monitor.   I would make initial adjustments in LR4 & further develop the raw file in PS.  When generating a copy to post on the web, I would convert to sRGB & imbed the color profile when generating the web-ready jpg file.  The image was slightly different when viewing in Firefox (it reads the embedded color profile) vs. viewing in Internet Explorer or Google Chrome browsers.  But it was not a significant difference.
With my new 5DIII, when using the same PP methods & conversion, there is a huge difference depending on the browser.  Firefox renders just a bit flat, but generally in the ball park of what I set the image color at.  In IE & Chrome, the reds are really over saturated & the blues are somewhat so.  I'm embarrassed to post anything with the fear that someone will look at them with one of those two browsers.
Has anyone else run into this issue when upgrading to the 5D3?  Way over-saturated colors in certain browsers for sRGB jpg files?
Here's an example I posted on the Nature Photographer's Network site: http://www.naturephotographers.net/imagecritique/largephoto.cgi?ref=195761&w=i
If you view it in different browsers, you'll see the big difference.  Thanks for any help or advice.

The manufacturer’s profile may or may not be quite correct.  If you are doing photography that others pay for the results from, then you should invest in a hardware calibrator to make sure things are as correct as possible when viewed or printed elsewhere.
One of the Spyder series is what I see many people using.  I see others mention the iOne/EyeOne and a few Colormunki, with some people also needing printer calibration be handled by their calibrator for added expense.  If you are sending out your prints, only, or people are ordering them, online, then that is not a concern, but getting accurate color on your monitor is, and being able to trust that the colors you’re seeing in your color-managed products like Photoshop and Lightroom will carry over to clients viewing sRGB JPGs on their cheap monitors, and also carry over to offsite prints, is a concern.
The initial problem description of colors becoming oversaturated suggests a problem with your monitor’s color profile not matching what it actually is displaying, as well as a problem with some non-color-managed applications showing weird things, and perhaps a problem with the output profile from LR or PS not being set and embedded as sRGB.
Setting your monitor to the manufacturer’s profile is a good first step as long as your monitor, itself, using the on-screen-menus of the monitor is set to the proper mode that matches what your profile is doing.  Maybe this is a Native mode, not a User or sRGB mode.  Some manufacturer’s monitor profiles are actually incompatible with LR and cause problems, though, which is another reason to create your own custom profile.
The reviews I see for your particular monitor say it is very bright.  Are you using it at maximum brightness when you are editing?  A hardware calibration process usually also has a step or two where you set your monitor to an ok contrast and brightness setting, rather than maxed out.   Is your room lighting (ambient lighting) very bright or normal overhead office fluorescents or very dark.

  • TIFFs turn into Canon Raw images

Why does iPhoto call my .tif files Canon Raw images? They are scanned images I edited in Photoshop CS3. I did set dates in iPhoto, having checked "Modify original files", but that's the only thing I did.
Edit: now that I checked, I also discovered that the files shrunk to about 10% of the original file size. Why? I don't want my photos converted to lossy formats without being asked.

Others are having problems with iPhoto changing tiffs to jpgs after date change and editing. See the thread "Adjust Date and Time..." will convert your TIFFs to JPGs!!!. I was not able to duplicate that issue. I also did essentially the same as you did and did not experience your problem.
Were the extensions on those files changed to .cr2 or another Canon raw extension?
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 08 libraries and Leopard. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.

  • Lightroom 5.5 Canon 5DIII raw files misinterpreted

When I import Canon 5DIII raw files into Lightroom 5.5 some of the file end up with rectangular areas of garbage, often diagonal lines.
The problem is generally remedied by importing the file again.
I use Downloader Pro to get cards from the CF card and then import into Lightroom.
I have tried different memory cards but doubt this is the problem because reimporting same file generally solves the problem.

My guess is that the files are corrupted—part of the raw data is missing.  The slight curvature of the border is due to a lens profile being applied.
If the situation can be fixed by redownloading the file, then something must be happening in the transfer.
If this cannot always fix the situation then perhaps the card is bad and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.  If downloading the file multiple times always results in exactly the same corruption then I’d guess the image is on the card that way.  You can try using another way to download like Explorer or Finder, and see if the same situation happens.
If you want to upload one of the files that LR says is corrupted, others can test it to see if it is also bad on their systems.  Sometimes a computer’s memory is bad on the image will only look bad in LR, but usually this manifests as things streaks and spots, not a block in the corner.

  • Why is my raw image cropped when I reopen it?

why is my raw image cropped when I reopen it?

When you edit a RAW file, any changes you made are stored in a Sidecar file with the same file name, but with a .xmp extension.  If you find and delete that sidecar file, then the RAW file will open uncropped.  But, you only have to select the Crop tool in ACR, and the crop window with handles will appear, so you can change the crop.   Or having sellected the crop tool in ACR, the escape key wil cause your image to revert to full size.

    this occured 4 times now.
When double clicking a Canon Raw Image (.cr2 file) Camera Raw 8.6 opens.
Now i can adjust the pic - and/or can open it into Photoshop
worked fine so far....but not always since the update
If i do so, sometime the pic will be opened like this
is here a photoshop pro aware of this error?
So far i did NOT reinstall Photoshop.
Its the only application i use (and PTGui sometimes)

I have made a few more observations.

In Camera Raw I can save files as .psd for example, and also open them in Photoshop. I still get the error when I try to open Camera Raw settings.

  • How do I remove Canon " My Image Garden" from the desktop when turning on my computer ?

How do I remove Canon " My Image Garden" from the desktop when turning on my computer ?  I have the icon but the program starts up and I have to delete it manually  from the desktop to clear my screen for other work...

Are you using a Windows or a Mac? What you're seeing (the backwards L shaped menu) is probably the Canon Quick Menu. If you have a Mac you can go into your applications, select Canon Utilities, then drag Canon Quick menu to the trash and empty trash can. On Windows you'd go to the control panel, select Programs and Features (or Uninstall Program/Add or Remove Program) and uninstall the Canon Quick Menu. Not required for all the normal functions of the printer. You can do the same thing for My Image Garden. Also not required.

  • PsE 8 Mac, ACR 5.7, no "Open Image" button in ACR?

A forum search was unproductive, so I apologize if this question has an obvious answer.
I've been a user of the full version of Photoshop for many years.  Now I find myself temporarily using PsElements 8 and ACR 5.7 on someone else's iMac.
After editing an image in ACR from Bridge CS4 (the one that comes with PsElements), I don't see an "Open Image" button in ACR.  How do I open the image in PsElements 8?
Puzzled.  Is this a sign that ACR is not installed properly?
    Thanks in advance.

Thank you for your reply, Barbara.
I am fully familiar with the full version of ACR that comes with the real Photoshop.  That's what I use at home on my desktop machine.
It's the PsElements version that I know nothing about.
The last paragraph of your post may hold a clue, but there's more to the issue I'm seeing here.  As you well know, the Mac version does not come with the Organizer, but with Bridge CS4.  I followed the PsElements-specific instructions for the ACR 5.7 download, as follows:
To install with Adobe Photoshop Elements 8:
NOTE:  You must follow all of the new instructions in order to
successfully install the Camera Raw Plug-in for Photoshop Elements
    1. Exit Photoshop Elements and Adobe Bridge
    2. Open the download file and double-click CameraProfiles.dmg and follow the on-screen instructions.
    3. Navigate to the root of the local disk (not the user's home folder).
    4. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)
    Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 8/Plug-Ins/FileFormats/
    5. Copy the existing plug-in to another location (for example, a new
folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need
    to revert back.
    6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw, from the download into the same folder as in Step 4, and overwrite the exiting file.
    7. Launch Photoshop Elements or Adobe Bridge.
That works fine for PsE 8 but does not let Bridge see, preview or open RAW files.  I had to go ouside the instructions and put another, additional copy of the ACR plug-in either in ./ Library/ Application Support/ Adobe/ Plug-ins/ CS4/ File Formats/ Camera Raw.plugin or, alternatively, in ./ Applications/ Adobe Bridge CS4/ Plug-Ins/ , otherwise Bridge shows me only generic icons for the raw files.
    The
    Applications/Adobe Photoshop Elements 8/Plug-Ins/FileFormats/
location does work as advertised for PsE, regardless.
My guess is I should uninstall PsE and Bridge, re-install both and then update to ACR 5.7.
If that still doesn't work, I'll see if there is a PsE version 9 for the Mac.  The computer owner barely uses PsE as it is and does not want to mess with the full version of the real Photoshop.
Personally, I'll be happy to go back home on Monday and forget this ordeal with PsE.   :-/
With the above instructions—taken from the Download page—there is no way to see thumbnails and/or previews of raw file in the Bridge provided with PsE.  Adobe has definitely gone down the tubes—and I know you're not Adobe.
    Barbara B. wrote:
…Basically in bridge acr, you use the save button to save in the format of your choice and then open that file into PSE if you wish.
Wow! That is certainly NOT the case with ACR hosted by Bridge in the full version of the real Photoshop!
Thanks for the help.  Much obliged.

  • Color shift between image viewed in ACR and open in PS

Today I updated Photoshop CC and now I have a slight color shift problem between the same image open in ACR and then opened in Photoshop. It appears to be slightly more saturated in ACR.
I have tried the same thing on another computer and it does NOT have the same problem so it must have been something that happened in the update (ACR was one of the items updated). I have also compared the preferences between the two computers and they are identical.
I guess the next thing to do is to deinstall PS and reinstall????
    Any advice would be appreciated.

Any difference between ACR and Photoshop is most likely due to a monitor profile problem. They both use the same monitor profile, but there are differences in the actual conversion so a problem can show up differently between them.
Is your monitor calibrated/profiled, and if so how, using what calibrator? Or are you using the Windows default (sRGB), or perhaps you got a bad manufacturer profile through Windows Update? (yes, that happens frequently).
To find out if the monitor profile is indeed the problem, go to Control Panel > Color Management > Devices. Set sRGB IEC61966-2.1 as default profile (if it isn't already), then relaunch Photoshop/Bridge and see if the difference is still there. If your monitor is wide gamut, use Adobe RGB instead.
Note that this doesn't fix the problem as such, but if you don't have a calibrator sRGB will usually be close enough until you decide to get one.
If you do have and use a calibrator, make sure it is set to make v2 profiles, not v4, and matrix rather than LUT profiles.
