Canon 60D RAW Photo Granulation in LR3 normal? Or is this a BUG?

Hello, in most Photos from Canon 60D RAW is the Photo Granulation very high in LR3.
Is this normal or is this a bug?
This photo grain occurs immediately after the load on the RAW file without any aftertreatment.
It looks as if the LR3 sharpens automatically.

The noise granularity is normal when working with RAW files because this is how the data comes off the sensor.
It can help to change your LR defaults to use a sharpen mask that is quite high.  I use 75.  The higher the sharpen mask the more distinct the edge needs to be before the capture-sharpening is applied.  Hold down the Alt-key while you adjust the Mask slider to see what is being sharpened and make it high enough that the general areas are not sharpened, only the edges.
For lower ISOs, this noise isn't necessarily a big problem for ink-jet printing that already consists of little dots, and actually helps the export sharpening have something to bite on if you are resizing significantly smaller, but it can be a problem is you are cropping down instead of resizing and displaying images close to full-resolution.  In this case you'll want to adjust the Luminance slider up a bit more than normal. Don't go overboard with it, though.
Having worked with RAW files for many years, I actually prefer my images to be a little grainy and don't like in-camera JPGs where things are smoothed out too much.

  • Can Canon 60D raw files work on Photoshop cs4, PowerPC G5?

So I recently got a Canon 60D for photo and video, but I can't seem to find a program that will read the 60D RAW files that is also compatible with PowerPC. Help! I am running photoshop CS4, the camera raw updates aren't compatible with PowerPC. The newest adobe DNG converter (6.5) isn't compatible with PowerPC, and the older DNG converter (4.4) that came with my 30D won't read 60D raw files. Is there anything that has a universal binary (PowerPC compatible) and will read 60D files? I really don't want to have to take my photos to another computer just to convert them. Thanks!

    You may be in luck:
The 60D is from late 2010 and is only supported by Camera Raw/DNG Converter 6.2 or later.
According to this page, 6.4 was the last version to run on a PowerPC:

  • I can not open canon 60d raw images on photoshop CS5.1? can not go to updates either- error?

I can not open canon 60d raw images on photoshop CS5.1? the same program on stationary mac can open the same raw files, whereas new lap top can not? Why?  can not go to updates either- error, why?

Which version of mac os x does your new mac have?
What error do you get when going to Help>Updates in photoshop cs5.1?
You might try downloading and installing the 6.7 camera raw update from here:

  • Canon 60D RAW files and Apperture 3.0

I have OS X 10.5.8 and Aperture 3.0. My new Canon 60D RAW files can not be seen either in Aperture or Finder. Is there newer version for Aperture or is it the OS X that is too old?

Here is a list of raw formats supported by the current Aperture version:
Raw Support for Leading Cameras: http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html
The current Aperture Version is AP 3.2.2., and to use the most recent raw support, you need to be running AP 3.2.2. and MacOS 10.6.8 or later.
If you find your camera in the list of supported cameras, you might consider to update your OS, if your hardware does support the newer systems.

  • New Canon 60D RAW in Aperture

In case anyone is still having probelms in working in RAW prior to Ap3 camera list being updated here is how i get around it. Download Adobe dng free converter. Load the Canon camera software that comes with the 60D.
Import raw files from camera into the Canon software. Move those files to a folder on your desktop. Then open the Adobe dng converter and select the folder on your desk top conatining the camera RAW files. Convert the files in the Adobe converter. Then back in the Canon software drag all the converted files straight into the Ap3 icon. You now have a folder containing RAW files in Ap almost as good as original but not quiet. A long process so hopefully Ap3 will be updated soon with the 60D JohnT

    Answering myself:
RAW compatibility support is not Aperture independent, it is a OS wide issue. To get support for Canon 60D RAW you must upgrade to Snow Leopard 10.6.5 as described here http://support.apple.com/kb/HT3825.
I've just completed such upgrade and I can now see my RAW images in the finder (with quick preview). However, upgrading rendered my Aperture useless as launching it reports "Aperture can not be opened because of a Problem". Off to the forums... Feel like I'm setting up Linux here... Apple!

  • Canon 60D Raw Processing Quality

I have recently upgraded the raw file definition for Aperture 3.1 to include the newly released Canon 60D. To my horror I noticed that raw files coming into Aperture has purple dots all over the place, making the photos purple. Some photos were taken in 3200 ISO setting, some at 1600. My first thought was a problem with my photos, but then I used Digital Photo Professional to convert and it made a night and day difference. Is anyone having the same problem? I have gone through hundreds of photos between Aperture and DPP and it is clear that Aperture is not converting these raw files correctly. I didn't have this issue with Aperture when I had the Canon 50D raw format.
    Thoughts?

I am having the same exact problem with my 60D. All of my photos process with a dark magenta hue in the blacks. Upping the exposure or brightness on any of my RAW photos causes the pinks to come out of the blacks and the photo looks even more overly saturated with pink. If I shoot in both JPEG and RAW simultaneously, the JPEG looks as it should be. But once the RAW version reaches Aperture, or OS X in general, the pink hue is very apparent and has ruined all of the photos I've shot since I first got the camera.
It should also be noted that processing the RAW files with the factory software supplied by Canon with the camera processes the photo as expected without the dark magenta hues. Could there be an issue with the RAW compatibility that Apple delivered in the OS X 10.6.5 update? I doubt this is a problem with the camera as the RAW file looks fine when processed with any software that isn't Apple related such as Aperture, iPhoto, or Preview.
Attached is a screenshot of a normally processed RAW file (top) and an Apple/OS X processed RAW file (bottom), same exact photo:

  • Canon 60D - RAW files not opening

I have recently taken pictures with a Canon 60D and i am unable to open the raw files in ACR.
I am running PS CS5 and have ACR 6.7.
I have read forums which say that the 60D require 6.2 and yet i am still unable to view the files.
Other applications as the Digital Photo Professional open them fine when i have downloaded the drivers for that camera.
    Can any one help?

The raw file you posted is not corrupt; however, it is from a 650D which wasn’t supported in ACR 6.7.  See screen capture, below.
Do you have a 60D file that doesn’t work that you can post?
You could convert the 650D raw files to DNGs to process them in CS5/ACR 6.7, or upgrade to CS6/ACR 8.1 for $200, or subscribe to the creative cloud single-app, or perhaps expierment with Lightroom, with the longest timeframe would be available with LR 5.2 RC that expires Sept 30.

  • Do I HAVE to upgrade to version 3 to see my Canon 60d RAW files?

I have the student edition of Lightroom 2 and have loved it for my Canon Rebel. I recently upgraded to a Canon 60d and am unable to access my raw files.
I really do not have the extra cash to shell out for an upgrade to version 3 at this point. Is there any other way for me to use and edit my raw files?
    Thank you!

Support for the Canon 60D was introduced with ACR 6.2 (LR3.2. The work around would be to use the Latest DNG Converter to convert the raw files from your camera to DNG files. Then import the DNG files into Lightroom 2. and you will be fine. When you do the conversion its a good practice to retain the original raw files for use with your camera manufactures software, which will not work with the DNG copies. Also if you have not done so you should update your version 2 to the latest 2.7.
The link for the DNG converter is here.

  • Adobe Lightroom 5.7 does not recognize Canon 60D raw files. I have Camera Raw plugin 8.7 installed. Is there solution?

Neither Bridge CS6 or Lightroom 5.7 can recognize Canon's raw file (Canon Camera 60D).
This only started a few months ago without any change that I made to the system
    Any clues?

Is this only when reading CR2 files on the camera memory card or also for CR2 files that were previously imported to your hard drive (i.e. ALL of your 60D CR2 files)?
LR 5.7.1 is only at Camera Raw 8.7. so OK. What Bridge, PS, and OS versions are installed? In Bridge go to Help> About Bridge
From inside Bridge launch any raw file and check the ACR version:

  • Unable to Open Canon 60D RAW files in PSE9

Since I got my new camera Canon 60D, I have not been able to open the RAW (CR2) files in my Photoshop Elements 9.  The ones from my previous camera I could. I have installed the Solutions software that came with the camera and have gone to both the Canon and Adobe sites to see if there is something I am missing. Do you have any suggestions for me?

Can you check which version of Camera Raw is installed - it needs to be version 6.2 or later for the 60D
Open Full edit on the menu bar click:
    Help >> About Plug-In >> Camera Raw
Press Esc to close the pop-up.

  • Canon 60D RAW files

PSE 8 does not accept the RAW files of a Canon 60D and there are no updates for PSE 8. How can I load the RAW files in PSE 8

You need to update the camera raw plugin:

    mac:
    http://www.adobe.com/support/downloads/detail.jsp?ftpID=4809
note: on macs this only updates the pse 8 editor camera raw plugin,
bridge will still not read the files.

  • Reading Canon 60d raw files with PS CS3

I'm using PC CS3. I have a new Canon 60d, but neither the browser or the raw converter will recognize these files. Is there a way I can update my current PS, or the browser, or raw converter versions to recognize these? Another option would be to install the latest DNG converter, but this adds an extra file conversion step.  (This is at work, and they are not buying me an upgrade to latest PS, which I assume would fix the problem.)
    Any suggestions? Thanks, David

The latest raw converter updates only work with the latest Photoshop.
So...  You have two avenues you can go down:
    1.  For the ultimate in convenience and integration, you can upgrade to Photoshop CS5.  That doesn't sound like it's in the cards for you.
    2.  You can get the free Adobe DNG converter, which will convert your 60D raw files to standard format DNG files, which in turn Photoshop CS3 can open.

The DNG converter does indeed require an extra step, but it's really not difficult to use.

  • My canon T5i raw photos won't load into PS CS4 on my Mac with Yosemite

I Recently got a new Canon T5i. I also had to get a new hard drive for my Mac, it came with Yosemeti on it.  I am unable to open RAW photos in my PS CS4.  I downloaded the 7.4 update but it still won't work.  Any suggestions?

Unfortunately, photoshop cs4 can only use up to camera raw 5.7, so you can use the 8.7 dng converter to convert the canon T5i files to dng copies which photoshop cs4 should then open.

  • Problem with Canon 50D RAW photos

    Hi,
I got a DVD with pictures in RAW format taken by a Canon 50D and a Canon 30D.
Unfortunately I can neither see the RAW photos from the Canon 50D in preview nor can I import the photos into my iPhoto 08. All updates (including RAW compatibility) are installed on my iMac (Snow Leo). All photos on the same DVD that were taken with the Canon 30D do not cause any problems.
I tried to read the same set of photos with an older Macbook (Tiger) - it works!!! I can read them all.
Anyone an idea? The iMac won't let me re-install the RAW compatibility update as already all updates are installed.
Thanks for your hints and ideas

Hello JobaMUC & welcome to discussions...
nor can I import the photos into my iPhoto 08.
The iMac won't let me re-install the RAW compatibility update as already all updates are installed.
Might be that the update for iPhoto '08 is iPhoto '09...?
As well, if these are recently introduced cameras, they may also bring newer requirements that demand an update from Apple for reliable RAW support - in that case, Apple may be playing catch up, and then the only choice is to wait.
    Good luck in any case.
