Canon 7D and aperture.

I just got a Canon 7D and I am trying to import the pictures. I am using a CF card reader, and all of the pictures are raws. When I import the pictures they take close to 45 minutes to import then about 5 minutes to actually load each picture. I have been using a Canon XSI up until today, and that has been instant loading. Any ideas on what is wrong?

That is very odd indeed. I have experience with both cameras and my 7D raw files import quick, quick, quick, even with my Best Buy branded (Dynex) card reader.
Do you have another CF card to see if it's a card problem? Is all your software (Aperture and OSX) up to date?
Are faces/places turned on or off? Automatically generate previews option on or off as as well?
Good luck.

  • Canon XSi and aperture, both RAW and jpg viewing?

I just got the Canon 450D and using Canon utility I see both the RAW and jpg pics import next to each other when I shoot in in the RAW and jpg mode. But I import to Aperture and I seem to only see one of them, the RAW one, not the jpg one. Is there a setting for this or am I missing something?
    Thanks

Just right click and choose new version from master JPG.

  • Canon 60D and Aperture/iPhoto - RAW support?

I realize this camera isn't supported yet, so my question is really how long does it typically take Apple to begin supporting new RAW files after a camera's release? It's been about two months for this one :/ Month? Two months? Three months? Is a pattern documented anywhere?
Photoshop has supported the 60D for about a month now. That's frustrating.

I would be interested in seeing anything history of release dates and RAW file support dates also. I am a newbie with only a S95 but also interested in when Apple will release RAW support for my camera [it came out approximately the same time as the 60D]. I have been advised to be patient...it will happen. My issue is that I download a 30 day trial of Aperture before I realized at the moment I can only try it out on jpegs, not RAW. I just hope it happens before my 30 trial runs out.
I did put in a request through the Aperture comment function but was advised it was probably unnecessary since Apple is well aware of new Canon and Nikon cameras.

  • Anyone having problems tethering there camera and aperture 3 after upgrading to OS Lion?

After installing OSX Lion I have not been able to capture via tether with my Canon 5d and Aperture 3. I can see the camera and tranfer images but I am not able to tether.

Hi, I guess everyone is having a little bit different tethering issues. Mine was I couldn't get my files transferred into library. I would able to connect the camera, and even fire the shutter from computer, but nothing transferred through. I would just see a message says proccessing, then nothing, and shot counter stays at 0.
Later on I found the solution for THAT problem. Turned out Aperture was taking pictures, but they stored all my photos in a root folder inside the library, and I was not able to see any previews in the aperture interface, which totally defeated the purpose of tethering. The work around for me after many trail and error was, I had to leave the "Version Name" block to Master File Name when I start a new tethering session. I can not use Custom rename feature, or nothing would get transferred...
Hope this was your problem, and that's the way to solve it. I know some other people having disc permission issue and USB related issue...

  • New Canon Rebel XSI, and Aperture won't read the .CS2 files properly??

    Hello all,
I have read through the posts but didn't fine one that answered my question. I just bought a Canon XSI and tried to upload my RAW files to Aperture, and first it showed the "unsupported image format" red screen. After messing around I could get it to see the images, but they were the size of thumbnails. It will read the JPG files fine. The Aperture site says that the CR2 files should work. I also tried deleting the rawfile in the system folder and re-ran the installer for 2.1 update, didn't change a thing. My Aperture version is 2.1.1. Any ideas?
    Thanks,
    John

Lucked out and figured out the real problem thanks to Mark Olson's blog:
    http://markolson.ca/2008/07/17/canon-eos-450d-rebel-xsi-cr2-raw-on-mac/
It turns out that the problem was related to RAW+JPG. Mac does not import the RAW files properly and I should have suspected this being the problem when I noticed the RAW file size was way too small (exact same size as the JPG file).
Luckily I had not deleted the files from my memory card so I was able to go back and import the RAW images again. Now at this point I'm going to ask Steve to cover his eyes because I had to use Vista to download the files!
    All seems ok now.

  • I have a canon 7d and my aperture version 3.4.5 is not recognizing the raw format? The Can not review any raw photo in the adjustments/raw fine tuning controls.

I have a canon 7d and my aperture version 3.4.5 is not recognizing the raw format? The Can not review any raw photo in the adjustments/raw fine tuning controls.

When i click on the adjustments everything is grayed out and the messages states " Image Not Found'.
Are you seeing broken arrows or yellow warning triangles, when you enable badge overlays?
That looks, like your original image files were missing.  Are your images referenced or managed?
Create a smart album with the rules "Files status is missing" or "Files status is offline". This will show you any images, where the original raw files cannot be found.

  • Canon D40 RAW and Aperture..

just discovered that Aperture doesnt read RAW pictures taken with my new D40, the D20 is no problem. Please, please, dont tell me that I cant use my new camera with Aperture - I only shoot RAW and aperture is the only program I use...

    Hey Ian, thanks for that.
since you seem to know this stuff, I have an additional question, - I hope you're still there :
So if I upgrade to OSX 10.4.11, which version of Aperture do I need then? And what are the requirements for my computer to run the OSX 10.4.11 ? I have a macPro, dont ask me whats already inside it in terms of capacity- I dont go around remembering those things. ..

  • Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?

I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

I think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.

  • RAW image import (problem in iphoto and aperture)

either the problem is me (my understanding of what I am trying to do) or something has gone awry with both aperture and iphoto...
when importing RAW images (canon 40d camera) many of which are shot in monochrome and show up as such on the camera (they even show up in b/w on the preview import in iphoto and aperture) ALL images once imported to both iphoto and aperture are in full color. This was not the case on two previous imports (shots taken in b/w RAW imported as b/w RAW images) but now seems to happen every time. I have restarted computed, reimported, checked all settings and nothing is working.
I am missing something, yes? Thanks for any help.

no ... you will have to export it as a .tiff or .jpeg ...
and then import into aperture ...
although aperture does have a great monochrome tool worth checking out ...
something to consider is to shoot your monochromes in RAW+JPG and import into aperture ...
see here for working with RAW+JPG:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=380111&tstart=0
when stacked you will have the B&W from in camera and the colour RAW file ... tweak the monochrome mixer until the RAW is to your liking ... you can use the B&W JPG for a baseline ...

  • Canon G7x and unsupported image format icon with RAW files.

When RAW files downloaded from Canon G7x get "Unsupported Image Format" message. Using iMac with 10.9.5  and Aperture 3.5.1.  This is a new camera and is not on the supported list.  Is there a way around this?  Now that Aperture is static will new cameras continue to be added to supported list?

The only way 'around' it is to upgrade to the required Aperture and/or OS version.  So you will need to wait for that to happen. In the meantime you could shoot Raw+JPG, use the JPGs now and when (and if) the camera is supported (or you move to a different program) you will have the Raw files.
As for camera updates in Aperture, no one here can say what Apple intends, we;re just users here like yourself and even discussing this is technically against the TOU of these forums.
But I think it is safe to assume, as Apple will continue to support Raw processing and that the Raw processing is done at the OS level and they have said they will support Aperture at least through Yosemite's life cycle that any new Raw format added to OS X will reusable by Aperture. But that's only a guess.

  • Canon s95 and g12 RAW file support???

Adobe has now updated Lightroom to include support for cr2 RAW files for the Canon S95 and G12.
An guesses how much longer for Apple to get its act together?

It's only a "release candidate" not a proper final release. Consider it an advanced beta. Adobe explain "release candidate" here:
    http://labs.adobe.com/technologies/cameraraw6-3/
An guesses how much longer for Apple to get its act together?
Aye - no doubt the entire Aperture team is sitting back, playing games on their iPads, drinking coffee and generally skiving...
I know this is not the answer you want, but the simple answer is - patience. It will be here when it's here - that's the way it is.

  • Canon Raw File Transfer using Canon 7D / Lion / Aperture 3.2

Is anyone finding issues in unloading raw files with a Canon camera and the latest software?  I have been doing this successfully for some time using Aperture 3.1 with Snow Leopard.  I use a 13" MBP with 8GB of memory and a huge hard drive.  I upgraded to Lion and Aperture 3.2 and find that my Canon 7D doesn't transfer all of my pictures off of the camera.  The camera is connected via the USB cable that plugs directly into the camera.  I have found a workaround by re-importing off the camera and selecting the option to not download previously imported pictures.  Depending on the number of photos, I may have to do it up to 10 times to get all the pictures.  I have the latest Canon 7D firmware.  I'm able to successfully do this using Canon Utilities running on Lion.  Ironically, this same issue happens when I import into Aperture from the camera or from the hard drive.  After importing onto my hard drive using Canon software and getting all the pictures in one try, I then tried to import from the hard drive into Aperture but faced the same issue.  I think I have this isolated to an Aperture 3.2 issue with Lion and Canon 7D raw images.  I also thought that it might be due to lack of battery life on the camera or with large photo shoots.  Nope.  It happens as well with a small number of photos and a healthy battery.
Is anyone else running into this issue?  Thanks.

  • Nikon D200 and Aperture ?

Any thoughts on whether Aperture will import raw NEF files from the Nikon D200 ?
Other photographers that have this camera on preorder are stating that dec 15th seems like a pretty firm shipping date.
My D100 works just fine...Should the D200 be much different with NEF files ?

    Dual 2GHZ G5 PowerMac   Mac OS X (10.4.3)

Nikon have a bad reputation for keeping third party manufactureres up to date with their RAW formats. WHo can forget the debacle over the encripted white-balance formats in the D70s, D50 and D2x Raw formats last year?
I wrote an article on this for Photography Monthly magazine at the time, and when I spoke to Nikon for comment it was apparant that they regretted trying to force consumers into buying Nikon's software. Even so, since then it takes longer for suport for Nikon cameras to appear in programs such as Camera Raw, compared with other manufacturers like Canon, Olympus and Pentax.
If Aperture is supposed to be a truly professional application then there is no excuse for not supporting a camera like the Nikon D200, which has been on the market since December. As a consumer I don't really care whose fault this is I just want it sorting out as soon as possible.
I'm reviewing Aperture for Photography Monthly at the moment. I started off thinnking "Five stars - best thing I've ever seen", but now I'm down to "three stars - looks great, performs adequately, major problems in some areas". And this is one of the areas!

  • PS Shadow and Aperture Shadows

I hope and describe this correctly.
I shoot in Raw with a Canon 30D. I was using iPhoto until recently when I purchased the new 24" iMac. Before I would import all my pics into iPhoto then open one I wanted to adjust in photoshop. It would open the raw in Photoshop and let me adjust the shadows up or down then crop and etc.
However in Aperture I import my pics from my Camera and I attempt to do exposure and Shadow adjustment in Aperture prior to opening it in Photoshop. This is were my problem is.
I shoot photos of babies and alot of times I have black background, daddy has black shirt and babie is in his arms. The final product goal is to see nothing but the baby. However in Aperture I can not deepen the shadows like I could in PS. The shadow slider starts out at 0.0 and will only let me recover the dark areas not make them darker. If I use exposure setting it alters all the photo.
What am I missing? I am providing a link to my gallery for the sole reason if you want to see an example of what I am after with the shadows.

You're confusing the controls between the two programs (ACR and Aperture).
You were using ACR in Photoshop to process your raw files. In that software the shadow slider is the black point.
In Aperture the black point can be set via the Levels control. The shadow control you refer to in Aperture is for recovering shadow detail (like the shadow/highlights tool in Photoshop).
