Canon 7D Imported Files Corrupted.

Every now and them when I import files created with a Canon 7D they show up as corrupted in Lightroom.
I can read and process the files using Canon's Digital Photo Professional.  The last time this happened
I deleted the files from the LR catalog then re-imported them and they were ok. This time that does not
seem to be working. I've tried to import the files from two different hard drives.  The files were copied
directly from the card to the two hard drives.
I've used digestIT to calculate the MD5 Hash of the files files on the card and after copying them to the
hard drives.  The hashes are the same so I'm assuming that the file copy did not corrupt the files.
I've also import the files directly from the card.  When I did this only two of the files showed up
as corrupted.
Finally I import the files using the same card and card reader using my laptop.  Every thing works, no
file corruption.  The laptop is running Windows 7 Home Premium 32 bit and LR 3.3 32 bit.
Any ideas of what may be causing this problem?  How do I fix it?
System details:
LR: 3.3 64 bit
OS: Windows 7 Home Premium 64 bit.
Canon 7D: Firmware 1.0.9
LR Cat: New catalog create with LR 3.3 64 bit.
Below are images of what the files look like in LR and DPP.  The last images is what happened
when I imported the files directly from the card.
Thanks

martin-s and DdeGannes thanks.
I think I have a better handle on what's happening.  I think my storage device is the problem.  I guess it could still be
the memory but I would expect the system to be unstable if this were the case.
I imported another set of photos today from a different card.  Sure enough one of the files showed up as corrupted in LR.  I then
did the following:
1. Attempted to open the file using DPP.  The file also showed up as corrupted.
2.  Checked the MD5 hash of the file on the drobo against the file on the card.  The hashes were different.
This means that the file copy was bad.
3. Removed the file from the LH catalog.
4. Deleted the file from the storage device.
5. Copied it from the card.
6. Check the hashes to make sure the copy was good.
7. Imported the file into LR.   The preview JPG still showed up as corrupted.
8. I then attempted to open the file in the develop module.  It opened ok.  Made some adjustments
then when back to the library module and the preview JPG now looked fine.
I guess removing an images from the catalog does not remove the preview JPG from the catalog. Which
means that if the image is added back to the catalog the old LR generated preview may get reused.

  • Lightroom 3 - some imported files corrupted

I recently discovered a strange problem. Every once in a while I find files imported by lightroom from my CF card are getting corrupted. Maybe corruption isn't the right word because the files are still readable, but they aren't the same as the file on the CF card. See the example screenshot below of a RAW file that shows this problem.
When I discovered this file in lightroom I went back to the CF card and copied the same file to my hard drive and imported it into lightroom and there was nothing wrong with it. This is the 2nd time this has happened to me and it is something I have only noticed within the last couple of weeks. I haven't done any updates to lightroom recently. I'm using lightroom 3.2.
To make matters even worse I just discovered today that the lightroom import is also corrupting video files only with video files it is not immediately obvious until you play them from start to finish and discover a split second smearing or glitch during playback. Just like the RAW files the damaged video files were fixed by simply copying them from the CF card and overwriting those imported by lightroom.
I compared sizes of the corrupted RAW file and good RAW file and the corrupted file was about 90 kilobytes smaller. With video files that was not the case. They were identical in size.
Is anyone else having this issue? Logically I don't see how lightroom would be causing this problem as I suspect it is only using operating system file copy functions to perform this operation, but with the corrupt versus good RAW file sizes differing it certainly points to something not being handled the same way when imported by lightroom.
Some additional details regarding my setup.

    Hi,
I have discovered the same or a least a similar problem on my PC. LR3.3 says in my translated words " Photo aapears to be corruped" (Das Bild ist anscheinend beschädigt).
When searched through the Win7 foren there seem to be more people having that problem - but very little idea of a solution.
On ma PV I worked with the built-in card reader when expirienced the problem first. A short period later the system did not accept 16 GB cards. I used  an external reader and everything works fine. But the problem with the corrupted files came (back) infrequently. Now I have to restart my PC before I can read CF cards and import them to LR3. Very strange.
Is there anybody haveing a glue what happens?
    I would appriciate any hint.

  • Missing songs / won't add or import files / corrupt id3 tags?

    Hey Folks,
I can't seem to get some songs/files to add or import to itunes...
My computer crashed while itunes was open. When I rebooted the itunes library was corrupted and all playlists and songs were missing.
    ... no problem...
I'll just add the itunes folder right... Which is what I did.
Problem is now a good 20% of the songs are missing. They are on the harddrive in the itunes music folder, but won't import or add to itunes.
I suspect maybe it has something to do with corrupt ID3 tags?
Anyone know the answer to this mystery?
    Thx

    I assume adding artwork is a tag-affecting change - but I can't
add on this track - it just reverts to the black image.
I take it the tags themselves are hidden. I see no direct
editing options for them although I read than they can be
set to different types - and there are utilities available to
    clean, fix, re-set, etc.
Ok, now I see your edit - this isn't an mp3, it's .aiff.

  • Please help, very important file corrupt

    Hi,
I am writing my final thesis, (more than 100 pages) and indesign crashed this moring while writing. Now the file can't open anyware anymore. I am using CS6 trial version, and even on other mac and pc it will not open anymore.
How can I get my file back? Please help me..
    Thanks a lot!

It's usually a bad sign when the file will no longer open even on another computer. Do you get any error messages?
Find, and empty, the InDesign Recovery folder in your user library to keep ID from crashing over and over when it tries to open the bad recovery data. (The recovery folder is in the same folder where the InDesign SavedData file is stored, and the path information for your OS can be found in Replace Your Preferences Note that this folder is gong to be a hidden folder if you run Lion, so you need to display hidden folders in your search).
Once that is done, start InDesign and use FIle > Open... to navigate to the original location where the file is saved. Tick the radio button to "Open as a COPY" and cross your fingers. If you are REALLLLLLY lucky it will open, and if it does, IMMEDIATELY export to .idml, then save the file with a new name as a backup, too. File > Open... and open the .idml file you just made, Save As to yet another name and you should be good to go.
If it doesn't open, do you have any backup copies someplace? If not, you best hope is probably Markzware: Bad InDesign or Quark File Recovery Submission Form
Now some advice on preventing this from happening again (though a crash is outside your control). First, never work directly off a removeable drive, if that's your habit. Copy the file to the hard drive, edit, then copy back to the removeable drive. Do a Save As from time to time to clear out the old, useless and inaccessible change data from previous sessions and reduce the file size. Make backup copies every day. If you do the save as each time you are done working, and add a versioning sequence to the name or something similar you take care of two birds with one stone.

maybe won't import because there are some JPEG files amongst the mov files.???

  • Import of songs results in skipping, file corruption

Apologies in advance for the length of this post, but I want to provide very specific details...
One month ago I upgraded a WIndows XP machine to Windows 7 64-bit. All of the iTunes MP3 files were backed up on a second hard drive in the machine. After the upgrade, I reinstalled the latest version of iTunes, then attempted to import the music files into the library.
This took place without a hitch, but within days I had found that greater than 75% of the files were now corrupt. When listening to music, songs would skip, cut out for 10 seconds, or just quit playing. This would happen on iPods I had set up with these files, my iPhone, and even when playing the files on iTunes on the Win7 64b computer.
Fortunately, my entire library is also backed up on another Win XP machine in the same room, on a network. So I deleted all of the files from the Win7 computer, then imported from the WinXP machine. Mind you, all of the songs play just fine on the XP machine. When I finished importing the 4000 tracks... same problem on the Win7 machine. Corrupt tracks, skipping, cutting out, scratching, etc. It sounded like a bad LP.
Over the past month, I have found that if I delete a corrupt song file, then import that song from the XP machine, it fixes the song. So I can actually put use-able tracks on the Win7 machine. But frankly, I do not have time to import 4000 songs one song at a time.
This past weekend I stripped the library again, then tried importing around 30-40 songs at a time from the XP computer. Same problem. I don't know what the cutoff is, but it's somewhere between 1 and about 30 songs at a time.
I am terribly frustrated by this issue. I have scoured the message boards looking for any ideas as to how to have a non-corrupt library on the Win7 machine. I would like to upgrade the XP machine to Win7, but frankly, I'm scared I'm going to lose my library. Until I know I have a safely backed up set of files that will play without skips, that isn't happening.
    Any ideas? Anybody?!?!

I found a workaround for this problem...
I ended up backing up the entire iTunes folder plus all of my tracks to an external hard drive, then moving them over to the new Win 7 computer. I then had to tell the iTunes Library to find the files again, but it incorporated them without using the import process.
This worked well, no more skipping. But, an album I had recently purchased from iTunes and downloaded onto the Win 7 computer lost half the tracks. At first I was really ticked off, because in spite of backing it up EXACTLY LIKE APPLE SAYS TO, the mp3 files were corrupted. Then I realized I still had the entire album intact on my iPhone, so I was able to sync the phone with the computer and move the valid files back on to the computer. Problem solved... though only due to luck.
Apple really needs to fix this issue. I don't what the problem is with Win 7 64-bit, but it's ridiculous that importing files using Home Share corrupts them on Win7 64-bit computers. All that is happening is a file is moving from one machine to another. If iTunes has to shuffle them around and in the process destroys them, that's just ridiculously sad. Amidst all of the horror stories out there regarding iTunes, this is my first negative experience with it personally, but it is a crippling feature that the software engineers should find completely unacceptable.

  • After Effects CS6: Canon .CR2 RAW files not recognized as acceptable files for import?

    HI Folks,
I'm trying to import as I've seen on tutorials, my RAW files from my Canon 5D3  .CR2 files.  I can open them in PS and LR5….and I'd seen examples of folks opening them with AE CS6 standalone, but it doesn't seem to recognize mine.
Any thoughts? Is there something I need to update, or flag or change?
    I'm on a mac, OSX 10.7.5
    AE verson: 11.0.4.2
This is what my import screen looks like:
    Thanks in advance,

I read through those linked pages, but they didn't give me any solution.
After nosing around through a LOT of sites on Adobe's site (why aren't pages dated, took forever to find the most up to date or pertinent pages)…I found this one that was slightly related, but worked for me.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/acr-84-bridge-cs6-metadata.html
I had to download this zip, and manually place the plugin as directed, and now, After Effects CS6 will recognize my CR2 raw files from my canon 5D3.
Thank you for the help, it led me in the right direction, but the link above was the actual solution I found that worked!!

    Fred,
Sorry, I mis-spoke. I do have Canon Utility installed on my SL machine, but have used it mainly as a file review interface and as a backup utility. My MXF files are then brought in via Log & Transfer in FCP 7, which requires one of the plug-ins (and as you noted, does not work with FCPX).
In the majority of situations I'm ingesting on location to a MBP running Lion. In that case, I have the option of importing them either into FCP7 or FCPX.
A came across this hack for  getting the Canon plug-in to install on SL. It looks straightforward but I haven't tried it, so if you do, proceed at your risk. As for me, my plans are to partition my drive later this month and boot from both 10.6 and 10.7 as necessary.
    Good luck.

  • Do I need to upgrade both LR 5.7 and Camera Raw 8.7 to import files from Canon 7dMark2?  or is LR 5.7 enough or is camera raw 8.7 enough

Do I need to upgrade both LR 5.7 and Camera Raw 8.7 to import files from Canon 7dMark2?  or is LR 5.7 enough or is camera raw 8.7 enough

Lightroom is a complete stand alone program and does not require you to have any other Adobe product on your computer.
Adobe Camera Raw is a plugin for Photoshop CS and is not require by Lightroom nor is it used by Lightroom.
However if you are using both Lightroom 5 and Photoshop CS6 /Photoshop CC and wish them to 100% compatible then you will need to update the ACR Plugin in Photoshop.
Lightroom 5.7 will work fine with your Canon 7dMk2. (Its internal processing engine is the equivalent of ACR 8.7)
To wit LR 5.7 is an alternative to ACR 8.7 Plugin in Photoshop, you do not necessarily need both.

  • LR 5.5 Doesn't work.  Won't import files from Sony or Canon

Since initially downloading LR 5, I have been unable to import files from my Canon 7D, Canon 5D Mk3, or my Sony Nex 7.   All three cameras are running the latest firmware versions.
    I'm using an Apple 27" IMac, with 3.4GHz Intel I7, with 16Gb 1333Mhz DDR3 ram.
The ONLY way I've gotten LR 5.X to import any images has been to move them from the memory card, to a folder on the desktop, and then import them from that folder.
Anything else I try results in a dialogue box that tells me the images can't be imported.
LR4 works just fine, and I have no issues importing files from any of my three cameras with it.

When I try to import anything, a dialogue box pops up, titled "Import Results"
Below that, it says "Some import operations were not performed",
Then, below that, it says "The following files were not imported because they could not be read."  And it then lists individually all the images I tried to import.
I then have the option to "Save As", or "Ok".
When I click "Ok", it ejects the card, and "No photos in Current Import" appears in the middle of the screen.

  • Canon CRW Raw files not supported in Preview, Nikon supported

With Panther and Jaguar, Canon RAW files in crw format were supported in Preview. In Tiger, these files are not. Also, when importing these files from camera or CF reader, canon raw files tagged with .thm! What is this? an 8 kb "document" that renders file corrupt. Did not happen in Panther or Jaguar. And the problem is NOT my camera because it works fine on Windows PC and on previous OS mac.
here's the kicker: Nikon NEF raw format is NOW supported by Preview, but was NOT supported in Panther and Jaguar.
So, I called AppleCare and they say NO raw formats should be supported by Preview.
Another example of how Apple has lost compatibility and quality control?
Anyone else who uses RAW files in photography have same experience?
    Thanks.
    Michael.

The easiest way to edit plist files is with Property List Editor, which you get installed if you install the Developer stuff that comes with your OS install disks. If you don't want to add all that stuff your computer, it is possible to edit with a a straight text editing program in plain text. Personally I find that too confusing. I put a copy of my edited Raw.plist file up:
    http://homepage.mac.com/francines/.Public/Raw.plist.zip
It has the substitution of the S50 for the original S60. It also lists the S70, so your Canon S70 should be working. If it isn't working either, then this hack won't help you. Download and unzip the file.
Because of permissions--you aren't supposed to be mucking about in this area--the easiest way to proceed is using the Terminal. The path is, unfortunately, extremely long. You open the System folder, then the Library folder, then Frameworks, ApplicationServices.framework, then Versions/A/Frameworks/ImageIO.framework/Versions/A/Resources. You should now see a list of files that includes the Raw.plist file. Leave that Finder window open.
Launch Terminal from your /Applications/Utilities folder. If you have never used it, nor ever used a sudo command you will get a friendly warning when you issue the first command. We want to make sure that the original file doesn't get lost. So type:
    sudo mv
and a space, then drag the Raw.plist file into the Terminal and drop it. The Terminal will helpfully fill in the path. Add a space, then copy the path up to the file name and paste, then type RawOld.plist as the new file name and hit the Return key. You'll need to type your password, which is NOT echoed to the screen, so type carefully and hit the return key again.
Next you want to add the modified Raw.plist file to the folder. Using a sudo copy command will insure that it belongs to system. So type
    sudo cp
add a space and drag the new Raw.plist file into the Terminal window. Paste in the path to the folder (it should still be on the clipboard) hit return, give your password and hit return again. I don't remember whether it was necessary to restart the Finder or not. You might want to do a restart and then Repair Permissions, just to be on the safe side.

  • Import Files as Projects makes other projects disappear

    Hi,
I'm new to these forums and new to Aperture. I would really like some help with this issue. I have searched the forums and while I've found one other post with the exact problem no one has posted an answer...I hope for better results.
I work in IT so I am pretty savvy, as such I will try to explain the issue as thoroughly as possible.
ISSUE: I have created Folders at the root level of my Aperture Library. Inside those Folders I have imported pictures with the standard import method, and as expected it has created projects for each import. After realizing that I could import "Files as projects" I tried that option. I had about 9 projects in the folder and after importing "Files as projects" for several new folders I was left with only a few new projects and several of my existing projects were gone. If I click on the folder that contains the projects all the pictures are still there, but the organization of having them in their individual projects was lost.
At this point I started over. Rather than taking the time to import one folder at a time, I decided to try the "Import Folders as Projects" option from the start. I had about 17 folders I was importing and after getting the successful import message I was left with only 8 projects, rather than 17 as expected for each of the folders imported. However, once again, ALL the pictures where there in the root folder.
I tried a third time. I wiped the library clean and started over and I got the same results.
Once again, I'm a new aperture user and I would like to transfer my MANY pictures into Aperture but If I have to import 1 folder at a time then it will take me months. Also I'm not too confident with the Library structure as I don't know if this is a corruption in the Library or another issue. It makes me worried that months down the line when I have all my pictures in aperture I will have to start all over.
Visual of the way I'm trying to organize (Of course there are MANY more projects in each folder):
Canon SD300 (This is a Folder)
    Sample Project 1
    Sample Project 2
    Sample Project 3
    Sample Project 4
Canon 20D (This is a folder)
    Sample Project 1
    Sample Project 2
    Sample Project 3
Canon 5D (This is a folder)
    Sample Project 1
    Sample Project 2
    Sample Project 3
Thanks in advance to anyone that can help.

Hi rwboyer - I just realized that I have read many of your posts on your website regarding organizing your pictures on Aperture, very nice. I have fixed/figured out what was going on....and to tell you the truth I feel kind of stupid I hadn't checked.
ANSWER: In the Projects tab the setting was set to "Recent Projects" as opposed to "All Projects". As soon as I flipped this setting they all magically appeared.
I don't know how Aperture defines "recent" but considering that I imported all at the same time I was not thinking any one project was more recent than another. Oh well it's fixed, I'm happy and very excited to start using Aperture. Thanks again for the response.

  • Lightroom 5.5 Canon 5DIII raw files misinterpreted

When I import Canon 5DIII raw files into Lightroom 5.5 some of the file end up with rectangular areas of garbage, often diagonal lines.
The problem is generally remedied by importing the file again.
I use Downloader Pro to get cards from the CF card and then import into Lightroom.
I have tried different memory cards but doubt this is the problem because reimporting same file generally solves the problem.

My guess is that the files are corrupted—part of the raw data is missing.  The slight curvature of the border is due to a lens profile being applied.
If the situation can be fixed by redownloading the file, then something must be happening in the transfer.
If this cannot always fix the situation then perhaps the card is bad and sometimes it works and sometimes it doesn’t.  If downloading the file multiple times always results in exactly the same corruption then I’d guess the image is on the card that way.  You can try using another way to download like Explorer or Finder, and see if the same situation happens.
If you want to upload one of the files that LR says is corrupted, others can test it to see if it is also bad on their systems.  Sometimes a computer’s memory is bad on the image will only look bad in LR, but usually this manifests as things streaks and spots, not a block in the corner.

  • LR 4.1 RC Does not import files

I use a Lexar USB 3 card reader to import files created by my Canon 5d Mk-II. I click on Import on the lower left corner of LR, point to the drive which displays the files on the card. But when I click on Import LR simply sites there with the progress bar at the top not moving. I waited for quite a while several times and the files did not copy and import. Then I copied the files using Windows explorer to the folder where they are kept and tried to synchronize the folder but that option was not avaliable from the right-click on the folder name context menu. I have to shut down LR and restart before the Synchronize Folder appears again.
Another, and possibly related anomaly is the number of files LR report that could be imported. The number is always wrong. For instance, there may be 25 files sync but it reports something like 172.

A new catalog with nothing in it imported from the Lexar USB 3 compact flash reader. I am traveling abroad and do not have another card reader. However, after the successful import into a blank catalog I imported a few more which hung up as it did in the old catalog. I was able to delete all the imported images ending up with a blank catalog and reimport a couple of sessions in succession. In one of them I observed something but could not replicate: LR imported files that were not marked rather than the few I selected. The ones it seemed to have chosen were short video clips. Since I have not been able to replicate the problem, I am willing to explain that as my error although I was paying particular attention to exclude the video files. I guess that's why this is called "human error"!
If the integrity of the original catalog I was using is compromised what is the solution? This is a rhetorical question since all the files will be transferred to my desktop computer anyway. I tested the sync folder option, which reported 151 new files. I instructed LR to sync thos files and LR went through all the files and ended up with a blank display of files to sync. I optimized the catalog and tried the same, it still shows 151 files to sync, which is obviously not correct.
