Canon 7D RAW quality

These photos were taken with my Canon 7D. I've heard that LR3 isn't very good with 7D raws, but this is so disappointing. Look at the gradient in the christmas balls …
Can anyone please tell me how to fix this? I love the LR workflow, and also like the RAW flexibility.
I'm on LR3.2 Camera Raw 6.2.
I'll be happy to upload the raw file for anyone who will give it a go.

I don't know if "gradient" is the right term. I've looked up "posterisation" and that might be it.
I shoot in AdobeRGB.
I have exported two new sRGB close-ups of the problem for you to look at, one from the original JPEG, one from the RAW-file.

  • Canon 60D Raw Processing Quality

I have recently upgraded the raw file definition for Aperture 3.1 to include the newly released Canon 60D. To my horror I noticed that raw files coming into Aperture has purple dots all over the place, making the photos purple. Some photos were taken in 3200 ISO setting, some at 1600. My first thought was a problem with my photos, but then I used Digital Photo Professional to convert and it made a night and day difference. Is anyone having the same problem? I have gone through hundreds of photos between Aperture and DPP and it is clear that Aperture is not converting these raw files correctly. I didn't have this issue with Aperture when I had the Canon 50D raw format.
    Thoughts?

I am having the same exact problem with my 60D. All of my photos process with a dark magenta hue in the blacks. Upping the exposure or brightness on any of my RAW photos causes the pinks to come out of the blacks and the photo looks even more overly saturated with pink. If I shoot in both JPEG and RAW simultaneously, the JPEG looks as it should be. But once the RAW version reaches Aperture, or OS X in general, the pink hue is very apparent and has ruined all of the photos I've shot since I first got the camera.
It should also be noted that processing the RAW files with the factory software supplied by Canon with the camera processes the photo as expected without the dark magenta hues. Could there be an issue with the RAW compatibility that Apple delivered in the OS X 10.6.5 update? I doubt this is a problem with the camera as the RAW file looks fine when processed with any software that isn't Apple related such as Aperture, iPhoto, or Preview.
Attached is a screenshot of a normally processed RAW file (top) and an Apple/OS X processed RAW file (bottom), same exact photo:

  • DNG 4.2 and Canon G9 raw CR2 problem

I have been unsuccesful getting the 4.2 DNG to convert the CR2 Canon G9 files, getting an error message that the file type is not supported. Running Windows XP Home. Any ideas as to how I can fix this. Thanks, Jeff

I just helped my friend with the Canon G9 Raw file won't open and recognized on Mac Computer.
Problem when try to open or drag the Raw image (*.CR2 File), I got an error message says the file type is either not supported or corrupted, also the file in the browser are all grayed out, means can't click & select & open. So I re-install the software just to make sure the software is fine.
The software comes with the camera is easy to install, here is the thing I was stumbled but figured it out.
    1. Use browser to find the raw file.
    2. click to select the file
    3. go to Menu Bar under "File" there is a section you'll see "Process Raw File" or something like that, then you are done, from there you can edit and open a Raw file.
My impression towards to the raw image quality and canon software: The software interface is not as nice compare to PS Element 4 Raw Plug-in, especially there is not button for "Processing Raw" on the browser window that you have to go to File >.. , I hope this is just for Mac users or I have to say the software is silly.

  • Canon small RAW failed to import

Canon 40D has a sRAW (stands for small RAW) quality option to save RAW at 1936x1288. The standard .CR2 RAW files (3888x2592) can be imported to iPhoto '08 without problem. However, iPhoto reports unreadable files for the sRAW. Is there workaround? Will Apple support the sRAW? Thanks.

sRAW is not supported and there is no workaround. This is a User to User forum and we have no idea what Apple's plans are.

  • Canon 6D RAWs processed awfully bad?!

    Hi,
I previously owned a Canon 400D and loved Aperture for the entire workflow, it was just a breeze. Now got a new Canon 6D and also took some test photos with the 5D mk3, and every Raw that I import just looks awfully dark and contrasty.
That is, for a moment they look nice, and then, when they're fully loaded, they turn dark and contrasty.
I thought something would be wrong with the cameras, but opened up some of the pictures in lightroom or in Photoshop, using the adobe raw processor, and there, everything looks nice.
I never knew that the aperture raw processing was so bad, not just with colors, but also with noise reduction for example. Am I doing anything wrong, maybe with some secret color space setting or so (cam is set to sRGB), or are the raw profiles in aperture for these new cameras just not implemented properly yet?
    Example Images:
    Aperture:
    http://chfilm.de/download/foto/IMG_0324A.jpg
Adobe Raw Conversion (nothing done, except hit auto adjust and increased the luma denoise a bit)
    http://chfilm.de/download/foto/IMG_0324LR.jpg
what is going on?? I seriously what have never expected such an enormous impact on image quality by the software, especially since I thought Aperture was a Pro-tool. Look at the sharpness of the images!!

I have been fortunate enough to recently upgrade myself to a Canon EOS 6D. After my first shoot, I was heartbroken to see the poor quality of the images--dark, low contrast, etc. This was fixable in Aperture with some effort, but then I started noticing serious blue and orange color artifacts around high-contrast edges, and a near total loss of detail in deeper shadows. I was about to return the 6D as defective but then tried a couple images in Canon's RAW processing software. And I was blown away by the results--gorgeous images, perfect contrast and loads of shadow detail that could be extracted with the right adjustments. I also grabbed a trial of Lightroom, which produced results similart to Canon's software.
So there's nothing wrong with the camera. Apple's RAW converter for the 6D is just flat busted. How could something this bad have actually made it out the door?
I've been a long-term Aperture user--since version 2.0, and have grown to love the interface and the effortless workflow for organizing images. But the issues with the 6D RAW converter have pretty much forced me to abandon Aperture over night. Hello Lightroom.
As with previous comments, I suspect this is really just part of the thin end of the wedge with Aperture and that it may be headed for extinction. Sad.
Here is an example that shows the shadow issues. Both are 100% views of he same RAW file loaded without any additional adjustments--except that I've cranked up the shadow level to illustrate the Aperture RAW converter's failure:

  • How to open canon 70D RAW files in Lightroom 4?

I have udated LR 4 to LR 4.4. It is supposed to open the newer Canon camera RAW files like the 70D. After updating with the download from Adobe LR ver. 4 will still not open the 70D RAW files. Does anyone have any suggestion? I must be doing something incorrect or am missing a step to the update. Thanks!

Not so, 70D support was added in Lightroom 5.2 ... Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
You have a choice to upgrade to Lightroom 5.6 or use the DNG convertor to convert the CR2 files to DNG and import.

  • Problem opening Canon 6D RAW even after upgrade today to PS CS6, WinXP-SP3

Givens: PS CS5>CS6 upgrade via $199USD download today, Non-CC upgrade. OS: WinXP SP3, camera: Canon 6D RAW (.CR2 files) and prefer to work on RAWs via Bridge.
Main goal: view Canon 6D files in Bridge, do adjustments, open via ACR into PS CS6 for further work.
My fav workflow for photos is: Bridge>ACR>PS. Just got a Canon 6D camera. So I updated to PS CS6 today and I did go through PS CS6 menu: help>update mechanism for all available updates, which was one round of ACR (and Bridge) updates, no more were offered. That brought ACR from v7.0.0.308 to v7.1.0.354--still could not see Canon 6D RAW files.  I went to Adobe.com and did manual download for ACR/DNG 7_3 but it did not enable Bridge to see my new camera files nor could I open the 6D .CR2 files in PS. Got PS error message about not recognizing filetype, update ACR, etc (which of course I just attempted). (Seems as through PS and Bridge did not know the ACR/DNG 7.3 "existed" IF that is a capability).
Then I tried to install ACR 8.7 from the "Fix your 6D RAW problems page" and got error messages in PS CS6 (perhaps bc I am on 32-bit system). Decided to start from scratch; uninstalled PS CS6 upgrade.
Secondary issue is: Now I have uninstalled PS CS6 and done System Restore to the point just after I downloaded PS CS6 upgrade. I want to reinstall but the installer fails. Support chat told me to download PS CS6 Upgrade again (doing that now), then reinstall.
Solve: Main problem: Be able to work on Canon 6D RAW through Bridge and ACR (prefer NOT to workaround with DNG if possible) At time of writing, as mentioned, I am downloading PS CS6 upgrade again, then plan to reinstall. If that works, then I need steps to update ACR so that I can work on 6D RAWs through Bridge and ACR. Please know that going through Photoshop's Help>Update mechanism does NOT seem to work. Do I need manual updates? If so, please direct me to the correct ones and order of procedure to execute this upgrade successfully.
    Many thanks, Paul

Yammer, thanks for the info about Camera Raw 8.3--that is my goal to load PS CS6 Upgrade and update to Camera Raw 8.3  Currently, I am having problems installing PS CS6 upgrade after uninstall. I have used Adobe CC Cleaner several times. It seemed to help, and the installer proceeded further with next try. Then I looked and there was no PS CS6 icons. I have done system restore also several times and am about to try again. It seems that my original PS CS6 upgrade installed, but when I tried to load ACR update, problems arose. Is there a way to remove recent version Camera Raw remnants from my computer. There is no Photoshop CS6 folder and further none for the CameraRaw.8bi for PS CS6. One possible clue: Yesterday I did two upgrades: 1) PS CS4>CS5 via box, then 2) PS CS5.CS6 on-line download non-CC. In one round of update, I saw that PS CS*5* Extension Manager failed to update. Seems unrelated but mentioned here for thoroughness.
Running ACR 8.3 in XP SP3 would be most useful and timely today as I have work to do. Many thanks, Paul

  • Horrible Adobe Chat Experience - How to open Canon 6D Raw files in CS5?

Hi, I just had an awful Adobe Chat experience with agent Dharma. I waited a very long time and when Mr. Dharma finally was able to help me, he wasn't able to. I was told that my product would no longer be supported and I couldn't be helped by Adobe because it was CS5. I was also sent to a faulty link. Anyway, I recently purchased a Canon EOS 6D and when I tried uploading my photos to Photoshop CS5 it said my RAW photos could not be supported. I followed the appropriate links for support and help.
My CS5 is updated, the Adobe Bride is updated. The extension for the photos is CR2 and they will not show the thumbnails in bridge and won't load in Photoshop. I need help. Now, I am hoping Adobe will support it's product and customer.

As each new camera comes out, Adobe have to write the code that enables Camera RAW to work with its RAW files.  It is nrealistic to expect them to keep doing this for all previous versions of Photoshop.  The Canon 6D needs ACR7.3 which Photoshop CS6
    http://helpx.adobe.com/creative-suite/kb/camera-raw-plug-supported-cameras.html
    You have several alternatives.
As an owner of CS5 you can take up the BUndle deal at $10 a month.
You can download the free DNG conversion software, and convert your CR2 files to DNG which CS5 can read.
You can buy Lightroom 5, oir even Lightroom 4 (if you can still find a copy)
I'd go with the Bundle deal.  There is a lot more to CC than reading Canon 6D RAW files.

    Hi Zach.
Sorry to say but Elements 12 came out several months before your camera. Adobe stops updating camera raw files for old software editions so that people have to buy new versions of the software when they get a new camera. It happened to me with LR3 when I got a new camera.
There are works rounds but they are a lot of extra steps and I think you would be converting the files to Some format other than RAW (tiff?) and which I am not sure will perform the same.
I think you just need to get a newer version of Elements.

Is this only when reading CR2 files on the camera memory card or also for CR2 files that were previously imported to your hard drive (i.e. ALL of your 60D CR2 files)?
LR 5.7.1 is only at Camera Raw 8.7. so OK. What Bridge, PS, and OS versions are installed? In Bridge go to Help> About Bridge
From inside Bridge launch any raw file and check the ACR version:

  • Can't open canon g16 raw files.  I have updated to Adobe camera raw 8.2 and am working with PS CS6.

Here is my issue, I can't open the Raw files from my new Canon G16.  I have run all the Photoshop updates and even installed the Camera raw 8.2 update but still cannot open my raw files.  The will open in Canons digital photo professional program so I know they are not broken files.  I have even installed the DNG converter and they will not even open with that.  What am I doing wrong?  I bought this camera specifically for the ability to shoot in raw.  My canon 60d raw files work fine.

Why on Earth did you upgrade only to ACR 8.2 ?
The current version of ACR is ACR 8.4.  You should ALWAYS update to the latest version.  Once a camera model is supported, it will be supported in all subsequent releases of ACR.
Beside new camera support, each ACR update contains any number of unannounced, unheralded bug fixes, improvements and enhancements.
What is the exact version of your OS and of your Photoshop CS6? For instance, if you're on a Mac, you should be running Photoshop CS6 13.0.6.  I can't remember offhand what the latest version for CS6 is.
Did you install ACR correctly.  ACR 8.2 should work for your camera (but update ACR anyway).  What version shows up when yo go to About Plug-in… > Camera Raw.
You of course need to relaunch Photoshop, maybe even reboot your machine, and then Purge the Cache in Bridge.
