Canon 7D Sraw & Mraw

When will PS4 support these formats for the Canon 7D?

why do people pay a fortune for photoshop when many lesser (cheaper!) alternatives out there ALREADY support 7d raw files ( eg SERIF )
not impressed!
The small Adobe Camera Raw team work their **ses off keeping up with all the new camera models that are coming out every month, sometimes without supporting data from the manufacturer.
Go for Serif if you think it has the same capability!

  • Canon 7D and mRAW and sRAW

Looks like the 7D is now supported but only for RAW and not mRAW or sRAW.
Anybody any ideas if this is going to happen ?

I can now import my RAW images from the 7d and they display in Aperture. Main issue is they are tiny in size. The image in the main viewer is about 4"x3" even in full screen mode, little more than the thumbnails. I've rebooted but no different. I've been converting to DNG using Adobe Converter then importing to Aperture up until now. Looks like that's still the only option for me. Anyone else hit this issue with Apples attempt to support the 7D?

  • Canon 1dsM3 sRAW / RAW white balance differences.

I am glad that Lightroom 2 is one of the few photo manipulation products that supports the Canon 1ds mark III sRaw format. Curiously when an identical photo taken in RAW and again in sRaw, Lightroom displays them strikingly differently.
The 1dsm3 has the ability to take one photo, and write a RAW file to one memory card, and an sRaw image to a second card. An example image taken in this way can be found here:
    http://www.melaque.com/photos/test-images/jjw12363-sraw.CR2
    http://www.melaque.com/photos/test-images/jjw12363.CR2
As both of these images were taken at the same time (only one exposure), one would think that they would display rather similarly in Lightroom 2. However in reality, one shows up quite warmer than the other.
When displayed with Canon's DPP the photos look identical, that is one is not warmer in tone than the other. Apple's Aperture product displays....well, nothing, as they do not support sRAW.
I would imagine that it would be a small matter to adjust the raw engine to correct this problem.

Accessing the files return Not Found:

  • Canon 40D sRAW and DNG

I know that Aperture 2 does not support the Canon sRAW format natively. It is, however, supported by the Adobe DNG converter. I expected that Aperture would be able to work with sRAW converted to DNG. It does not.
I assume that the reason is that Aperture sees that it is from a 40D and tries to interpret it natively, when it is really a different format. It is unfortunate that the adjustments pane is greyed out, so I can't force it to use DNG conversion. It would be useful to be able to force DNG conversion just as you can force RAW1.1 conversion.
Does anyone know of a workaround in DNG? I know I could just use ACR to batch convert sRAW to TIFF or JPG, but that seems like it shouldn't be necessary.

hi all. I'm having the same issue with the 40d and sraw. I know the camera stores the images in a combined sraw/JPEG format, and I can visualize both forms in the Aperture photo browser using Pixelmator (I can even open and work with the JPEG version using Pixelmator). Pardon my ignorance, but is there a way to visualize/work with/export the JPEG version with Aperture? I have the latest versions of Aperture and OS X. Thanks.

  • Canon 40D SRaw

Though the Raw plugin was updated in CS3 to 4.2, I still cannot open the SRaw of the 40D. Is there a problem with mine system or was this SRaw not included in the update?

    >This forum is about pointing out the weak areas of Adobe that they can improve on.
    No, these
user to user forums are for users to try to help other users and provide them with workarounds.
The fortuitous fact that this particular forum is blessed with frequent visits by Thomas Knoll is an exception, and it seems in incredibly bad taste to come in here to whine, ***** and complain when it would have been a very simple matter to check the support for your camera before buying it.
You fail to realize that if ACR supports your camera before CS4 comes out, it will be as a free service to you, as you never were promised by Adobe (or by anyone else, for that matter) that your camera would be supported in this version of Photoshop.
In other words, you are demanding a freebie to which you are not entitled by virtue of having bought the latest version of Photoshop, which went on the market before your camera existed.

  • Converting to DNG in LR very very slow

I had about 2000 images in my catalog of nearly 50k that weren't in DNG so I chose to convert them. However it is taking forever for them to convert - I've literally been running the conversion for days. I had 1000 left this morning, and 9 hours later I still have 376 to go! Each image is taking literally 10+ minutes to convert (I can see it on on the image time stamps). Generally I find the performance of LR perfectly acceptable, and my machine isn't a total slouch (Q9550, 8Gb RAM, SSD) and nothing else is running. LR's not even maxxing out the CPU, it's averaging 25%, the disk isn't being thrashed and there's loads of free memory.
For comparison I've just run DNG Converter on 203 RAW files and it took less than 10 minutes to complete the lot. So there is something very funky going on within LR if it's taking 10 mins to convert only one!
    Does anyone have any thoughts?

DNG currently supports two basic representations for raw images: (1) a mosaic format (e.g., Bayer mosaic), and (2) a linearized full-channel (e.g., RGB) image. The former is usually only 1 channel, and the latter is usually 3 channels. Hence, the latter is much bigger to store (i.e., bigger files) compared to the former.
The Canon sraw/mraw format (called sraw mode 2 and sraw mode 1 in earlier models) does not fall directly into either category. Therefore, when you convert the images to DNG, they are stored in the latter format. This causes the resulting file size to be bigger.

  • Unsupported image format error

    Hey folks,
I've read several older threads on this topic and have not seen any new information. I am hoping there is a fix and someone out there knows it.
When I fired up aperture today I discovered that all of my images display with the dreaded unsupported image format error.
Thinking that my 215gb library had gotten too large, I tried to create a new library. Same result. When I import new images from my Canon 40D they show as a tiny preview and then quickly turn to the red message. It appears the raw files are not even imported into the library.... which made me think permissions. I repaired permissions and went so far as to set my ~/Photos/ to 777 ... still no dice.
I tried rebuilding my library - did not help
I have tried restoring from TimeMachine backup - no help
I deleted the plist and ~/Library/Application Support/Apreture - no help
I'm getting really worried that I have lost my library. I understand that the files are still there, but what about my edits and metadata. Seeing that this is a wide-spread issue is not helping my situation.
    Any suggestions? Thanks in advance!

Good questions and thinking! I was vague about the chronology.
I first noticed the issue when I intended to import some images on my iMac which is home to my main 200+gb library. I never even got to the importing stage b/c I saw red, literally, when I launched the app.
I then created a new library and tried to import.
My final stage was to import onto the MBP, different machine, different library.
As for updates, I had applied the Dec. updates to the iMac but not the MBP.
While I know this will destroy my crediability as a troubleshooter (if you saw my images you'd know I have none as a photog ) I have realized that my Canon 40D somehow got switched into a custom mode during a few of the shots causing it to go into Canon's sRAW. I think that accounts for the behavior of the imported images on the MBP. It does not, however, account for my entire library turning red on the iMac.

  • Unable to update to Camera Raw 2.7

neither iPhoto or Aperture recognize if a 2.7 update's been done. I go through system update, and I'm told I'm up to date. I can't remember applying the update or not

iPhoto supports Raw not sRaw, mRaw or any other compressed Raw variants. (Given that Raw is meant to be a straight dump from the Camera's Sensor, how can you have a compressed version that's still a dump from the sensor?)

  • Canon 7D MRaw & SRaw not recognized in ACR 5.5

    Hi,
I was testing the Canon 7D MRaw and SRaw, but ACR 5.5 does not read them.  It does read the full RAW file.  Will these be supported soon?
    Thanks,

The Lightroom 3 public beta, which presumably includes new technology that will also be in ACR 6 (CS5), while only having a beta camera profile for the 7D, can already process mRAW and sRAW from the 7D so Adobe knows how.  From what Eric said in an earlier thread, I'd expect the next version of ACR, which would be ACR 5.6 for CS4, to have mRAW and sRAW working along with the proper suite of 7D camera profiles as well as full support for the G11 and other very recent cameras, perhaps beta support for the 5D.4 if it ships soon enough for Adobe to get one in time.
The current drawback of using LR3 for anything is that the luminance noise-reduction is disabled, while Adobe solicits feedback on and perfects the color noise-reduction which is MUCH better, already.  As such, high ISO photos look really good as far as color-noise but also have a very fine grain to them, much finer than ACR 5/LR2 conversions even with Luminance NR turned off, so the underlying demosaicking algorithm is apparently different.  The LR3 beta doesn't expire until 4/30/2009 so I wouldn't expect LR3 or ACR6 until spring next year, so ACR5 would likely be refreshed two more times unless they release CS5/ACR6 earlier than the LR3 beta-expiration suggests.

  • Aperture and sRAW (Canon 50D)

Does anyone know of a reason why Aperture seems to not fully support the sRAW format? My personal experience has shown me that bringing an sRAW (7.1 mp) file from my Canon 50D into Aperture will result in a much noisier image. Several of the RAW Fine Tuning adjustments are also grayed out (sharpening, denoise, etc). When I bring in a full RAW (15mp) file, Aperture automatically brings the noise level down a reasonable amount once the preview is rendered.
Here is a comparison; both images were shot at the same settings, one at sRAW and one at RAW, and I did not perform any adjustments in Aperture, just imported and exported a full JPEG.
    sRAW
    RAW

Sorry, I wasn't thinking straight, I was thinking the forum would shrink them but I don't know why I thought that would help.
    @Keith
I haven't tried DPP yet, but importing the same sRAW files into The Lightroom 4 beta produces much better results. I can see a slight difference between the RAW and sRAW processing in Lightoom, but they are 99% similar, whereas I would say in Aperture the difference is dramatic.
I have learned to stay in RAW, but I would appreciate the ability to shoot sRAW. I was hoping for perhaps a camera profile or other solution, but I suppose I'll have to stick with RAW or look into Lightroom
    Thanks for the help

  • Canon 7D MRaw files not recognized by PS Elements 8 on Mac OS X

Canon 7D MRaw files are not recognized by PS Elements 8 on Mac OS X.
After I installed CR 5.6 I can see MRaw files in Bridge CS4, but the files still do not open in PS element 8
Can anything be done to fix this?

    Hi again,
    I found "Library\Application Support\Adobe\plugins\CS3 (or
CS4)\Fileformats". As it happens, the camera raw.plugin 5.6 was already
installed for CS4 but not for CS3, which I therefore proceeded to do. When I
tried to open a Canon 7D MRaw file in CS 4, PSE opened with the same error
message as before, i.e the file format was not recognized.
However, just for the fun of it I tired to open the same file from CS3 in
PSE 6 and it works! but with the warning that the ACR expires in Jan 2010, I
    think
So, there is still something wrong with the CS4/PSE 8, but I think I like
PSE better so I am OK for now - although the irony is that the only reason I
bought PSE 8 was to be able to work on Canon 7D raw files.....
    Thanks,
    Niels R

  • Canon EOS 40D sRAW not supported

When I use sRAW with the Canon EOS 40D, sRAW format (1936 x 1288) comes back with "Invalid Image Format", when importing. Online postings imply that other Canon cameras, such as the EOS 5D Mark II, have the same issue. I am running the latest Aperture 2.1.3, with all updates. Any way to fix this, save for waiting for an update?

    Guys
    sRAW is not supported
Do a search of the forum - it has been covered loads of times
It is not mentioned as a supported format on the Aperture site
    http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/#formats
Try using the feedback menu option in Aperture
    Hope this helps

  • Canon sRAW to DNG Size Question

    Hi,
I shot some images with my Canon 40D set to sRAW. A sample image size is 6.1 MB. In Lightroom 1.3.1, I convert the RAW (.CR2) file to DNG. The resulting DNG file is 6.7MB in size. The DNG Creation settings I used in the conversion were:
    JPEG preview: None
Image Conversion Method: Preserve Raw Image
Options: Compressed - ON / Embed Original Raw File - OFF
I was under the impression that DNG format would be smaller than the RAW format.
Is this larger DNG file because my original RAW file was a compressed RAW file (sRAW) and, as a result, the RAW image needs to be uncompressed before it is converted into a DNG file? If the original RAW image was NOT compressed, would I be seeing a reduction if file size after the DNG conversion.
I guess the heart of my questions is this: Will conversion from RAW to DNG only provide a file size reduction if the original RAW file is uncompressed? Is it normal for me to see an increase in size when converting from sRAW to DNG, due to the fact that the original RAW file is a compressed RAW format?
Thanks in advance for your clarification.
    Steve

The reason for the larger DNG file is quite complicated, one needs to know some JPEG details. In short, the original sRaw file contains four 15 bit pixel values for two pixels, while the DNG file contains three values per pixel.
The size difference would be much larger if the CR2 file did not contain a 050 KB large thumbnail, which is in the DNG file only between 100 KB abd 200 KB large (approximation).
Plus, the DNG converter fine-tunes the compression; this is not affordable in-camera.

  • Eventual Support of Canon sRAW files?

Hi all, any idea when Apple/Aperture will support Canon sRAW format? I just got my fancy new 5D mark II and get "Unsupported Image Format" and a beautiful burgundy screen when the download completes. Thumbnails yes, actual images, no.
I'm in the midst of choosing a post processing and filing program and at the moment Lightroom is winning...

For what it's worth, I'm in exactly the same situation with the same camera and created an account to ask the same question only to discover that you had already asked it. So, thank you! I have been using sRAW for shooting events where I can stand to sacrifice some resolution to gain the extra low noise performance, and I've been very happy with the results.
I have already sent my feedback to Apple, and now I'm hoping for an Aperture miracle before my 30 day trial period on Lightroom runs out. I really don't want to have to buy LR2 just so I can process sRAW. One possible alternative would be using DPP to convert sRAW to TIFF to read into Aperture, but that makes workflow more cumbersome.
