Canon 7D still loosing me ...

Hello All,
I am using a Canon 7D and FCP 7 ...
In the deep recesses of this 'problem solving forum', I found the following:
"What you want to do is download Canon's "EOS plugin" for FCP. Under Drivers and Downloads, you need to select Mac OS X. Anyway, I don't know if it will work with the camera connected via USB. You may, instead, need to put the camera's CF card into a card reader."
If I copy all files from the card directly into a folder on my desktop, log and transfer won't pick them up (doesn't like them) and by dragging them directly into the project, FCP keeps shutting down. I am creating a new sequence at 1280 x 1080 (same Pixel Aspect Ratio) and Apple ProRes 422 HQ.
I take it that the file I need from Canon is "ce1100x.dmg.zip" (EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro). Please advise as to the correct codec for this ... Apple ProRes 422 HQ good enough?
Thanks.

ProRes (LT) is plenty good enough, HQ is very much overkill. Remember that DSLR video is very highly compressed to being with. ProRes (LT) will handle up to 10-bit, 4:2:2 video, which is very much beyond what your 7D is capable of.
Ingesting directly from a CF card via Log & Transfer with the Canon EOS video plugin is by far the fastest ingest method.
If you copy the CF card to a hard drive, make the whole card a Disk Image, and FCP will see it just like the original CF card. The whole folder structure must be in tact. Copying over only the H.264 files will not work with Log & Transfer. In that case, you'll have to just use Compressor normally, and it will take 2-3x longer to process.
Also, Firewire card readers transfer and respond MUCH, MUCH faster than USB card readers. Very well worth the extra money.

Mail is still loosing attachments at random intervals. Sometimes the attachments arrive and sometimes they do not. Has anyone worked out a solution to this yet?

As with all posts thus far, I have a sporadic loss of attachments. I can tell when this occurs, as the file size clearly shows an attachment should be present, but the "attachments" column fails to recognize an attached file. Unlike some of the suggested fixes, I cannot use "quick look attachments" or "save attachments" to get around the problem. Rather, I must log into my Outlook Web Access for Enterprise Messaging to see and download attachments. This greatly diminishes the advantages of using a program like Mail.
Not only does loss of attachments occur sporadically, with no consistency as to sender, attachment type, file size, etc..., it also can change on a given message with attachments suddenly appearing and, more troublesome, others suddenly disappearing even if they were previously opened!
Because of mailbox size restrictions through my employer, I download most messages to my hard drive. However, if I download a message that has a 'missing' attachment, it becomes lost forever. I can see, again by file size, that an attachment should be there, but can obviously no longer access the attachment using the web interface.
This problem doesn't seem to be as bad on my iPhone 3G. In fact, I can sometimes force an attachment to 'appear' on my computer by opening the attachment through Mail on my iPhone. Again, not a very appealing fix to an annoying bug. It would be great if a fix for this bug were to come soon...

  • Match canon 60d still to canon 60d footage.

I'm not sure if this is the right forum, but I'm hoping someone here might be able to help.
I have a still taken with a canon 60d. I also have movie footage, taken from exactly the same position. I want to match up the still pixel-for-pixel with the footage. The difficulty is that the still is 5184x3456 = 3:2 and the movie footage is 1920x1080 = 16:9
What I want to do, is take the still into Photoshop and crop/resize it so that it is 1920x1080, and it has a pixel-for-pixel match with the movie footage.
Looking at a screengrab from the footage, and comparing it to the still, it's clear that the still is cropped, but I haven't been able to work out exactly what sequence of actions will match the still to the screengrab.
A further complication is that 60d actually records at 1920x1088, not 1920x1080, although After Effects seems to ignore this.
Any help would be much appreciated.

'the right forum' depends on which software you're using - this is the Premiere Pro section. Let us know and we'll move the message to the right place for you.
If you're cropping in PS the easiest way to match the two images (still and an exported frame from the video) is to open the exported frame and add the still as a new layer, move and scale it to match (turn down the opacity on the still to see what you're doing then reset the opacity when done). Then save the file as a JPEG or TIFF, which will crop everything to the document size - as your base layer was the exported frame, the resulting file will be the same dimensions as the video. This of course assumes that the still and video were shot with camera and lens settings so that everything you can see in the video is also present in the still.
Premiere Pro, After Effects etc. can crop and zoom a still image too, but it's easier in PS if all you want is a static image (i.e. the zoom isn't animated).
You will find it tricky to get a perfect 1:1 pixel match, as the encoding for video used on DSLRs doesn't read the same pixels as a still shot does. There's interpolation and sampling going on, so you can get the two layers to be visually the same, but not mathematically.
Canon video at 1088 is always a bit confusing, it's down to the way the sensor polling takes place. Just place the footage into a 1920x1080 timeline at 100% and it'll crop off the left and/or right edges - do not use the 'scale to frame size' feature in Prem Pro or you'll force a resampling of every pixel, and lose a lot of quality.

  • Still loose ability to drag and drop files in Project pane.

In the last two weeks, I've had two instances where I lost
the ability to drag and drop files within the Project pane.
However, here's the kicker...the problem doesn't manefest itself
until after I end my session, close RH, then restart the computer
and restart the project. That means I don't know that I'm working
in a broken project until AFTER I've zipped up and saved the
current project. I tried addressing this in this orum once already
and I received some suggested fixes (included in the list below)
but it never fixed and and has happened again.
    Some pieces of information:
    - I've deleted the .xpj and cpd files, no joy.
    - I've regenerated the output, then tried to move a file, no
    joy.
    - I've generated a CHM (supposedy to update other files), no
    joy.
    - I'm not attempting to move a file to a directory where that
    name already exists
    - If while I'm having the problem, I create a nw project, new
folders, and new topics, they move around fine.
    - If I create a topic IN the directory with the problem, I
    cannot move that file.
    - I've zippd up a broken project and sent it to Adobe. They
openned it and it was fine. They zipped it back to me and it still
    wasn't.
    - If I create a new project, replicate my directory
structure, and import the htm files into the new structure (a
ubdirectory at a time), the files move fine.
    - I'm only working local on Windows 2000 with 30 GB of disk
space, and I have not installed anything else on the computer in
    the last 2 weeks.
    - I've escalated this to the next level at Adobe and am
sitting by my phone with my headset waiting for the call back
    "within the next two hours".
    Anyone seen this?

I'm not sure on the exact details of your process, but if you
open the project after unzipping it, perhaps the unzip process has
    changed that file attribute...?
I appreciate your response, but no...all files and
directories had all permissions allowed. The zip process wasn't
involved until aftrer the problem showed itself...I zip just for
backup with the hope that I never have to go to it. It was my
working project that lost the ability to move files. It just turns
out that after it happened and I went to the zip that it showed
that the problem had affected the files before I zipped them and
therefore, the zip was of the broken set.

  • IOS5 & iPAD2 still loosing WiFi connection

My 20" iMac (model late 2006) is running MacOS 10.7.2.
    My iPad2 is running iOS5.0.0.
My modem/roughter is a Netgear DGN N300 Wireless Gigabit ADSL2+ Modem Router DGN3500.
I live in the "woods" and my nearest neighbor is around 1/2 mile away (0.8K), so my security is off.
I have renewed the lease; restarted the iPad; restarted the router.
The iPad is set to connect to a known network automaticaly.
I still have to manualy select my router, and or re-select if it does manage to connect on wakeup or restart.
My iPhone 4 Verizon has no such problem.
Any ideas why this is a problem even after the upgrade to iOS 5?
    Thanks in advance.
    -Apple 2GS

Update the firmware in your router to the latest level. (http://support.netgear.com/app/answers/detail/a_id/19204)
Try Settings > General > Reset > Reset network settings on your iPad.
Test your iPad on other networks. If it has problems there then it may have a hardware problem.
If it works well on other networks and a firmware update doesn't help then you might need a new router.

  • Canon 600D still not supported in L/R 4

Very disappointed as I contacted Adobe a while ago asking when tethered shooting would be available for the Canon 600D.

"On the other hand : the fact that OSX / iSync can't find available services on my SLVR over Bluetooth is clearly a problem caused by Apple...
...my SLVR complies with (all) Bluetooth-communications-standards, since it can sync with Windows PCs and swap files with other Bluetooth devices (non-Motorola GSMs for insatance) flawlessly...
You are totally wrong... the fact it works with Windows does not mean that it's not Motorola's fault. In facts, if you think correctly:
    - Mac OS X has no such problems with all other bluetooth devices/phones
Motorola only did check that his phone worked in Windows (if not, they wouldn't have released it). This means that Windows seems tolerant to whatever bug the Motorola phone has. This is quite typical... lots of other devices have hard bugs that were never discovered by their manufacturer because their only test bed is one peer: Windows, which has bugs too.
This does not mean that Apple can't do anything: Apple will have to understand what the bug is and why Windows does not trigger the bug then try to workaround it. Apple already does that kind of stuff in its system. This is a good short term policy (to make the user happy) but a pretty bad one long term as that means that Apple has to put lots of "hacks" throughout the system to "mimic" Windows bugs.
You should complain to Motorola not having a more robust testing process.

  • Trying to email MVI-AVI file recorded on Canon Digital Still+Motion Camera

Have taken a burst of video motion with sound using my Canon digital camera and want to send it via email so it can be opened and enjoyed
Tried bringing it into iMovie where I chose compression for email
Then I chose compression for Quick time BUT when going back to Entourage where I try to attach the file it says I need to buy Stuffit software first.
    Any ideas ?

Use YouSendIt to send all huge files through email.
If the other party has high speed internet service & AIM use either AIM or iChat to send the file.

  • Final Cut 5 stills loose keyframes.

I'm working on a project that consists of still images (jpg, tiff, pics, tga)in FCP 5.03. Every time I reopen the project or I have to re-render, key frames and motion effects tend to just disappear. I've tried throwing out the perfs and even moved to a different computer and it still happens. I did the same project a few months ago in FCP 4.5 and it worked fine. Anyone have any ideas?

We've been trying that, exporting all the individual files as a single quicktime movie and using that to edit, but our problem is that due to the nature of the production (An animated television series) all work in progress renders we get are JPEG.
This is because the software we're using to animate with (Celaction 2d) can only output un-compressed or JPEG Quicktime movies. To keep our hard disk space down (Even though we have plenty) it'll be great to fix the JPEG problem once and for all. Otherwise I guess it'll be re-rendering all the JPEG movies into another codec? Which is time consuming.
Anyone else had this problem? Does anyone know of any issues using .wav files?
    Thanks again!

  • Using rubber cast and still loosing bars.

I recently bought the Iphone 4. I then purchased a rubber case for the death grip. But even with the case on I'm still losing bars. Is this happening for anybody else? Or is this just a fluke. Not sure what to do, maybe return the phone and hope for the best.
    Thanks

Can you elaborate? I mean, do you lose the same number of bars. I don't think the case is supposed to totally eliminate it so if you used to lose 3 bars and now lose 1 or 2, that might be normal.
Also, which iOS do you have? 4.0 or did you upgrade to 4.0.1? If you updated, there should be fewer bars lost, but you'll probably start with fewer too - unless you are in a great spot with 5 bars. With the first OS, I could lose 4 bars. With the update, I usually just lose 2, but I start with fewer.
I know one antenna expert reported you could lose 24 decibels without the bumpers, but with them they still lost a far amount - I think it was something like 15, but I may be wrong.
I'm not sure about the argument another poster brought up about only helping in fringe areas. If you cut down on the decibel loss, you should have fewer bars lost, regardless. Oh, there may be times you are at the very bottom edge of, say, 4 bars, and drop to be at the very top of 2 bars or something, but multiple tests should generally show fewer bars lost than without the bumpers, in my opinion.

  • How to keep quality of stills in FCP?

    Hi guys
I´m a cameraman not an editor and have a few questions for you.
I have a project coming up where we will do the whole film as a series of stills.
The stills will be shot using a Canon digital SLR camera, then imported to FC
Now, is it a way to import these stills and work with them, make an edit and be able to export the final film either to HD tape or 35mm print with out the stills loosing quality?
I guess it might be a way to work with proxy copies of the stills, then when the edit is finished, somehow replace them with the originals?
Could I even do this in FCE, or is Pro needed?
    Any input is welcomed

make an edit and be able to export the final film either to HD tape or 35mm print with out the stills loosing quality?< </div>
    The whole thing?
I'd use After Effects at 4k resolution and work closely with your transfer house's engineers BEFORE you start the project. Get their specs and work backwards from there.
FCP could be where you assemble the project's movies form other applications but your moves and effects should be composited in software designed for the job. FCP's motion editing interface is impossibly lame and the rendering capabilities are inappropriately coarse for hi-rez motion graphics.
FCP will handle the editorial and assembly/output tasks easily and can be used with low to medium rez proxies for rough editing. Substituting out your proxies for your high res images and high rez movies can be tricky in FCP so build lots of time into your schedule to get it right.
BTW, there's nothing new about these production techniques. I don't know where else you're looking but there are hundreds, maybe thousands, of blogs and production reports on rostrum camera production technique, including stuff by that Kent Burned guy.

  • Loosing Right Click When Install CS4 64bit on Windows Vista 64

    Weird Photoshop CS4 installation problem:
    1) Windows Vista 64 bit new installation SP 2
    2) firewall is off
    3) I have installed & reinstalled the program several times
    4) When installed I am loosing the Windows Right Click and I get this error message:
"The specified module could not be found: c:\program files\adobe\adobe version cue\client\4.0.1\versioncue.dll
All the version cue files are installed but I still loose the right click and get that error message. I also get the same message when I click the folder options when I try and set security permissions
    Please advise

Have you used the CS4 Clean Utility before your re-install? What happens is that Adobe Drive is messing up things, so I recommend to re-install without it. This little tip may also help:

  • IPod 4th Generation screen blank. iPod still turns on, just can't do anything.

Yesterday I was about to go out, I picked up my iPod and it somehow managed to jump out of my hands hit my foot and land on the floor. The screen popped out immediatly after it hit the floor. It fell about 5-6 inches. My sister dropped hers twice as much as I did from higher lengths and this didn't happen. The iPod itself still turns on. I just can't get the screen to turn on. I'm not even sure if I tried putting the screen on the correct way. I just tried connecting the LCD cable and snap it shut, I did eventually manage to get it shut, but the screen was still loose. How can I get my screen back and working again? Please help!
