Canon 7DII

I got the camera and tested it with the 400 mm f 2.8 MKII versus a 5DIII with the same lens plus a 1.4X MKIII, both at F 4 and ISO 400 mounted in a tripod and manual focus.  The target was a brick wall.  Other than enlarging the image obtained with the 5DIII in the computer to match the size of that obtained with the 7DII, no further image manipulations were done in RAW CC.  The results were that image quality from the 7DII were slightly better than that of the 5DIII. I have done the same test with the 7D and the image of the 5DIII was better.  In other words there is a perceptible gain in image quality.  I kept the 7DII because I still will be able to use the F 2.8 aperture of the lens that will not be possible since the 5DIII + the 1.4X that would be f 4.  Also gain the 10 fms that double that of the 5DIII is great for wildlife photography.
The image quality/noise is not a considerable improvement over the previous one.  Otherwise the camera capabilities surpasses in all aspects those of the 7D.  There some small details such as now the frame counter goes to 1999 versus 999 in the old one. When setting the date there is an additional option to change the daylight saving time, a GPS,  etc.
One peculiarity is that the labeling in the LCD panel is the reverse of that on the 5DIII, yet the Main Dial and the Quick Control Dial works as labeled in the 5DIII.  For example, the AF-Drive is labeled as such in the 5DIII but as Drive-AF in the 7DII, yet in both cameras when you press this button to change the AF the Main Dial is used.  Somebody at Canon forgot to match the labeling on the LCD panel to correspond to that of the 5DIII so that the first notation AF indicates use of the Main dial and the second notation Drive indicates the use of the Quick Selection Drive. The Rating Button I still consider a waste; no professional will rate the images based on the LCD monitor and it is not programmed to be changed to a more useful function.  In the 7D I could use the AF-ON and the AF point selection button to magnify the images in the viewfinder that I found easier than the current method of having to push the Magnifying Button and rotating the Main Dial.
The autofocus is excellente and I will risk to say better than the one on the 5DIII.  There a new button surrounding the multi-controller that allow for the quick selection the various AUTOFOCUS modes, a great improvement location over the previous M-Fn button (that is still present) but I still have to push the AF selection button to activate it.  Why is that I just cannot have single action button for this function or a way to change the camera's program to do it?
Canon is again cutting cost by offering a Basic Camera Manual plus a full manual as a CD.  This is fine for those tha carry a notebook out in the field but I no longer do to save delays in airports as well as cutting weight for carry-ons were restrictions are getting to be less than 18 pounds for some airlines. Overall, this camera has a lot to offer for the money.

Would you really want to carry around the printed version of a 547-page manual? I don't think I would.
Bob
Boston, Massachusetts USA
Absolutely.  I carry the manuals for my flashes, lenses and cameras in my main gadget bag ALL the time.  I also frequently have the National Geographic Field Guide to the Birds of North America, the Snakes of Texas, and a couple of other field guides either with me in the blind or at least in the vehicle.  As cameras become more sophisticated (complicated) there is a greater chance that I will somehow initiate something that don't actually wish to and then will need to find my way back to where I wish to be.
Interestingly, I just had this conversation with CPS and they claim that the reason is in an attempt to go "green".  I told them that I thought they could at least make the full manual available in print for those who were willing to pay, perhaps even $15.00 - $25.00 for it.  I certainly would be willing to pay that much if need be.

Why can't i open raw files from me eos canon 7dii on PS elements 12

Because your camera is newer than your software.
You need ACR 8.7 which was released this week, to open CR2 files from the 7D.2.  Only current Adobe products can use this version, which would be PSE13 and the Photoshop versions CS6, CC & 2014 and some Adobe video products.
You can also use the free DNG Converter 8.7 to create DNGs of a folder of images at a time, and then open those DNGs in an older PSE version, but you’ll never be able to open the native CR2 files unless you update the host software to the current versions.
The DNG Converter 8.7 is available from the Adobe Updates page:

Why can't i open RAW files from eos canon 7dii in PS elements 12???

The maximum version of camera raw in elements is 8.5
The minimum version required for 7D MarkII is 8.7
In other words, the 7D mark II is not supported in elements 12
You can either upgrade to the next version of elements (13), get lightroom 5, get photoshop CC, or download the free version of the dng converter.

  • Sharpness of Moving Subjects Indoors

So I was a wedding photographer for years and shot square format using lots of different techniques both indoors and outdoors. The subject rarely moves unless dancing. So there was lots that can be done.   Now, I shoot a Mark4 and a Mark3 but mostly of my children during their life’s events. Yes I shoot at work (not my primary role but rather an ancillary duty), but typically outdoors where ample light is not a problem.
When shooting my kids at their karate tournaments, it is typically in a gymnasium. Yes there are some windows and lots of metal halide lights. But when trying to freeze the type of a katana during karate forms demonstration, one must crank up the shutter speed.   Like 640 plus. This just kills the ability to use a non grainy ISO. typically at 12,800iso at F3.2 just to keep the exposure in the ball park.
And of course it never fails some mom posts a pic with an iPhone that is tack sharp and I need to hear why are my photos grainy.   Granted the iPhone was not freezing the action to the same degree, but it is pretty damned good.
I guess my question, without using a flash, any recommended settings that will offer good results at freezing the action with keeping the ISO out of the grain.

Sorry 1D MK4 and 1D MK3.   I typically ise a 16-35mm 1:2.8L   I have an 85 1.2L  but because of how the events are layes out I need the flexebility of a wide angle zoom when close.  If I am in the stands I can use a prime but the 85mm requires too much croping in afterwards and makes the problem worse.   My bugger zoom is a 4.5-5.6L  so that forces me to push the ISO higer.  Cant really change my position as I am not the house photographer and I am limitted where I can stand.
16-35mm is sorta wide to get many types of sports shots... though it's better on an APS-H camera like yours when you can get as close as in your example. Plus f2.8 is the max aperture it or practically any other zoom provides. At least it's got USM focus, which is fast in most cases. (Don't know what your bigger f4.5-5.6L zoom is, but I would guess it's the 70-300L that has USM and is also fast focusing, though the aperture somewhat limits it to "good light" conditions).
85/1.2L is a wonderful portraiture lens. But even though it's USM, it  is not the fastest focusing or most ideal for sports/action. With such an extremely large aperture lens capable of rendering razor thin depth of field, a "long throw" focus mechanism is used to emphasize accuracy, at some cost to speed. This is not typical of USM lenses. They are usually the fastest focusing. For example, the EF 85/1.8 USM is noticeably faster focusing than the 85/1.2L. 85/1.2L II is faster than the original, but still not as fast as the f1.8 lens (which is also a lot smaller and lighter). EF 28/1.8, EF 50/1.4, EF 85/1.8, EF 100/2, EF 135/2L are all very fast focusing USM lenses. So are the EF 70-200/2.8 and 70-200/4 lenses, though they are one or two or even three stops "slower".
Looking at your shot, I don't see that foucs is likely to be your concern, but see another likely problem... the type of lighting being used. I'm guessing it's either flourescent, sodium vapor or mercury vapor. All these types of lighting are quite challenging for most cameras, because the lamps actually cycle on and off at a high rate (120 times per second in the US, 100 hz in some other parts of the world). This "fools" the camera meter and often the white balance as well. Another reason to shoot RAW, to have more latitude to correct missed exposure or white balance. The relatively recently introduced Canon 7DII has a new feature that's said to be able to compensate for this lighting effect. I haven't used it (yet), but if it works reasonably well it might be a real game changer for those of us who get stuck shooting in these types of lighting conditions often.
You should further research and experiment with noise reduction. I've had the good fortune to get some guidance from someone who did a lot of testing with 7D (original) like my cameras, and has provided a lot of info on high ISO work with them. It's a combination of using extra + Exposure Compensation, using a Noiseware plug-in with Photoshop. and with particularly high ISOs even applying different noise reduction in each of the color channels.
At least you can be certain you're getting much better shots than the folks with camera phones, in the background of your sample shot!

The 1.2.1 firmware update didn't do it.
    Tad

Yes, sorry. I did realize I didn't specify exactly what I shoot.
I do a lot of car-related things. Car photoshoots, races, etc. I'd like to delve into portraits and such more upcoming too.
The races are easy to do, so long as you have a fast camera and a good lens. Even going from my old Nikon D60 to the faster Canon 60D proved very helpful. I am also pretty good at the focus pan where you move with said object to blur the background.
My real issue with the crop sensor cameras thus far have been the noise levels. I do a lot of shooting in low-light. But I figure a couple proper lenses a good tripod, and some time experimenting could help that.
I do like the idea of the T5i as it's so cheap. At only $600 on the body, that would give me plenty of wiggle room to fund proper lenses. And I suppose that if I went that route, I could always just end up picking up a 7DII as my go-to when released, since the T5i will obviously have it's limitations.
But at the same time, going right for the 70D would also be a solid choice as to it's benefits, larger sizing, etc.
Although I'd love a 6D, it's probably better that I stay away from FF for now until I get steady pay from shoots. I know me, and I'd take myself broke buying proper lenses.
The 60D seems like it's still a good choice, but kinda going backwards from the others. And the 7D, same thing. Although still a great camera, it seems to (at least for me) have the negatives outweigh the positives at it's price point.
So it seems like it's been narrowed down to the T5i and the 70D.
FYI, I don't have a ton up yet as it's been recently created, but feel free to check out my page for a couple references of what I shoot. It's below.
Also, on Instagram, I'm "averagewhiteboy" as well. I have a Flickr Pro account too, but I don't think I've updated it since going Canon.

I just tried to capture some footage from my hv30, the first time I've tried, and it say's on the capture screen that the capture device is off line. I have the camera properly connected and its in the right setting, is there some setting in premiere that's i have wrong? I have another program that came with the camera, and it can't connect to the camera either, saying that its not connected. Not sure what to do at this point, so if anyone has any ideas that would be awesome.

This is the most weird camera I have ever seen, you have a miniDV tape camera appartently without a Firewire I/O connector.  I just looked at this Canon specification  http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&modelid=1620 6#ModelTechSpecsAct
and there is nothing about a Firewire/IEEE-1394/etc.  Without a firewire interface Premiere is unable to capture video.  apparently there is some software supplied with the camera, maybe it can capture the video via the USB interface to your computer and then (if it is the correct format) you can import it to Premiere.

    Hi glraczon.support,
It sounds like the external display you are using (projector) operates at a smaller resolution than your MacBook Pro. You may want to configure the display preferences in System Preferences for the external projector.

I am unable to open raw files taken on my Canon Rebel T1i in my version of Photoshop CS3.  When I import raw files into Bridge they come up as patches with CR2 on them and when clicked on, a notice comes up stating that Photoshop does not recognize these files.  I tried to update my Adobe Camera Raw by downloading version 4.6 from the Adobe Website, but when I clicked on the plus-in, I got another message that Photoshop does not recognize this file.  I spoke with a representative from Canon who said that I could not update CS3 and that I should subscribe to the Cloud.  I would prefer to use my CS3, if possible.  Can anyone advise me what to do?

  • Questions on Drivers & printing to networked Windows computer (CANON)

I'm trying to print over a network, to a CANON printer connected to a Windows PC.
My initial attempts resulted in the document being printed 75% smaller on the upper left corner of the page only. (Margins etc. are all fine).
Sounded to me like a driver problem, so I downloaded the latest driver for OS X(from CANON). I installed the driver, but now, when I try to setup a new printer, I still can't see my printer model (ip5000) in the available list. (The options are either Generic or one of the gimp drivers that came with OS X).
Where did it put the driver? - How can I make the printer use it?
And, how do you un-install a driver? (in case it doesn't work)
    Thanks.

    Hi there,
The drivers for the Canon PIXMA range of printers are not designed to work across a network, they are for direct USB connections. As has been mentioned numerous times in this forum, if you want to print to a Canon BJ printer that is networked, ex. shared by a Windows PC, you need to use the CUPS (GIMP) drivers that are included with the OS. The only exception to this is for the R series of the PIXMA printers, which have an Ethernet and wireless connection. There is a Canon network utility that redirects the spooled file to the remote printer.
Try using the S800 GIMP driver. You will have to open the driver properties and set it to Text to get good quality printing.
Better still, download the latest release of Gutenprint 5.0.0 and use the iP4000 driver. It works nicely to my iP5200R hanging off an XP SP2 box.

    Paul

After installing Mountain Lion, I tried to scan from my Canon MX870 and received the message: "MP Navigator EX quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. A report will be sent to Apple,"  This problem happened right after I installed Mountain Lion. I then downloaded Canon's upgraded software and drivers for the MX 870 and the problem was resolved. Now one month later, the problem has returned.

You should still use Image Capture IMHO.  If it was my gear, that's what I would do.  No need to worry about software upgrades.

  • How to uninstall print drivers Canon MF4150 issues

Hello all, I am having a nightmare of a time getting my Canon MF4150 to print. It looks from all of the threads on here it was a less than ideal choice for a Mac owner.
When I first bought the unit I managed to get it to print, everything seemed peachy.
Problems arose when I wanted to use the unit to scan. I downloaded a variety of third party software and drivers in an attempt to get the scan function working. I had mixed results, and this process seemed to upset the printing side of things. Once I scanned a document, the printer would then not work.
I abandoned the idea of scanning through the MF4150 and have gone back to dedicated Epson scanner.
Since then I have not had any luck getting the printer to print again.
I have gone through all the MF4150 related threads on these boards I can find, and followed the process to installed outlined here - https://discussions.apple.com/message/7657893#7657893 but to no avail.
I really just want this thing to print and it's driving me nuts.
I have the printer attached directly to my MacBook Pro running 10.5.2. I'm not trying to print through the Airport.
I would like to know how to completely uninstall any UFR II drivers and related software / information and start this process from the beginning again.
So far, using the answer provided by PAHU here https://discussions.apple.com/message/7657893#7657893
    I have -
    1. Open System Preferences > Print & Fax
    > DONE
    2. Select the MF4150 printer and press the minus " - " button to remove the printer. Do the same to any other printers that are in the printer list.
    > DONE
    3. Hold down the Control key and click in the empty printer list. A window showing 'Reset printing system' will display. Click this.
    > DONE
    4. Close the Print & Fax utility.
    > DONE
    5. Run the Canon UFR2 v1.70 installer and select Uninstall when the Easy Install menu appears
    > This is where I get snagged. I'm not offered a Uninstall option. I have attached a screen grab of the window I am presented with. I am currently trying the "o1141enx_m_ufr224" version of the UFR driver. I have continued to complete the points below regardless of the fact i cannot uninstall.
    6. Restart the Mac and run the v1.70 installer again to add the UFR2 files back onto your Mac
    7. Go to Applications > Utilities and open Disk Utility. Select the Mac OS X partition in the left pane and select 'Repair Disk Permissions'. When this has completed, quit Disk Utility
    8. Open Print & Fax and add the MF4270 again
    9. Open TextEdit, type some simple text and select to print.
    10. Report back if the above doesn't get you printing.
I have also attach a screen grab of the process I go through when adding the printer.
Any help with this would be amazing. I've tried everything I can think of.
My latest idea is to try and remove any trace of previous printer drivers and go from there. You can see in my list of available drivers in the file attached I now have all sorts of UFR drivers in the list.
Again, if anyone can throw me a line on this that would be great.
    Thanks & Regards
    Coz

    Hello Coz,
It's been a while since you've posted, I hope you have not given up.  I was having grief with my MF4150 as well, but got it working.  There is a more current driver - search for Mac_UFRII_V230_uk_EN and install it.
Then, when you go to add your printer through System Preferences > Print & Fax, make sure you click the "default" icon in the top of the dialog.  It should show your Canon MF 4100 series , then use the bottom drop down menu to choose your driver and select Canno MF410 Series UFRII LT (UK) from the list.

  • Is there a way to edit raw files from the Canon 5DMkIII in Lightroom 2?

I rented a Canon 5DMkIII this past weekend and shot in RAW. I'm running Lightroom 2.7 on my laptop because I have a pre-Intel dual-G5 tower at home and can't run LR3 or LR4 on a pre-Intel chip machine and I tend to share my libraries across my laptop to my tower and back (so I need to be able to open the LR files on both machines, which is why I'm still using LR2 ... I know, I know, I need to upgrade but that's going to be a hefty investment!)... In the meantime, I'm wondering if there's a way to view/edit the raw files in Lightroom? They won't even import (I get the message upon import attempt: "Some import operations were not performed. (97)")... I know the information is there, though, because I used PhotoMechanic to do the initial sort of my images that I wanted to keep/edit. I see there's ACR (Adobe Camera Raw) 6.7 (I think it is) that supports the 5DMkIII, but I'd prefer to edit across the board in Lightroom, it's so much faster. Is there something I can download to still edit my raw files in LR2? Or, do I have to buy the update and get LR4 if I want to edit my 5DMkIII RAW files? Thanks in advance for your help!!

Support for the canon 5d Mk111 was introduced in LR 4, ACR 6.7 so you will have to use the Adobe DNG Converter 6.7 or later to convert the raw files to dng format before you can import and work with the files in LR 2. The converter is a free download from Adobe and is available at this link.

  • Canon MP560 no longer recognized by Image Capture/Preview

I have a Canon MP560 wireless printer/scanner and for some reason the scanner can no longer be seen by either Image Capture, Preview, or the Canon mp560 scanner toolbox under the Print menu. This happened either after installing 10.6.5 or after installing the latest Canon Printer Driver updates (I am not sure which caused it, as I did both updates recently...)
It can, however, be seen by MP Navigator 3.0.
Anyone found a fix for this yet?
    thanks

Okay, have done some testing and found some interesting things.
With a new install of 10.6.5 (selecting not to add any printers) I was not able to locate any Canon AIO via wireless. The Default Add Printer pane was empty so it looks like the printer and scanner driver needs to be present on the Mac. For the printer this is understood, as the Canon protocol 'canonijnetwork' is not present in the BJPrinters folder located in Library > Printers > Canon (due to the customized installation the Canon folder was not even present). In checking the Image Capture folder (HD > Library) I also found that the Devices folder was missing. Inside of here you would normally find the Canon IJScanner package/s for a standard installation of 10.6. But with the customized install this package was not present and appears to influence the Mac's ability to 'see' the networked scanner component. To confirm this, I installed the Canon v2.4.1 driver update, which in turn created the Devices folder in Image Capture and consequently made the scanner component appear in the Default Add Printer view.
Another observation was that prior to installing the Canon v2.4.1 update, Image Capture would still display the MP on the network, but under the Shared menu - not the Devices menu. So even without the ICA driver installed nor the MP scanner driver installed, I was still able to use Image Capture to scan a document from the wireless MP. The same was true for Preview in as far as the Networked Scanner selection showed all the MP's present on the wireless network.
At this stage I believe that the Canon driver update you mentioned may have contributed to part, if not all, of your current symptom. The install.log does have a record of what this update installs. If you checked it there may be record of the installer not completing correctly. In any case I assume that for your Mac this update did not complete correctly and is causing the problem. So one suggestion would be to run the [Canon Driver v2.4.1 update|http://support.apple.com/kb/DL899] again (or for the first time if you simply used Software Update previously) to see if this repairs the CanonIJScanner packages.
