Canon 85mm f/1.8 vs Canon 135mm f/2

Hi, I have Canon 1100D and Canon 50mm 1.8 lens.
I want to buy another lens and i need to take full body shots with it and to have a lot of bokeh (or depth of field)
and i want it to be sharp.
now because i have a crop camera the 85 will be 136mm..
but my question is if to upgrade the 50 to 135 or to go straight to the 135?
there are a lot of difference between the 50 and the 85??
Thanks

"...  i need to take full body shots ..."
You don't want either!    These lense have become know as portrait lenses.    Although you can take "full  body shots" with either, you will need to be back farther from the "body"!
I would pick a EF 35mm f2 IS USM or possibly the EF-S 17-55 f/2.8 IS USM.
Still sticking with your first choice, I would get the EF 135mm f/2L USM.  It is a much better lens and performer than the 85mm f1.8..  I sold my 85mm after a short trial with it and bought the Sigma 85mm f1.4.  Now that is a Lens with a capitol "L".  The best 85mm made, bar none.

  • Canon t5i, 50mm f1.4 or 85mm f1.8??

Hey guys im new to DSLRs. I recently bought my Canon Rebel t5i with the 18-135mm lens. Now i wanna upgrade a bit to take photos of family etc. I dont of to buy the 50mm f1.4 or the 85mm 1.8 please help.
    Solved!

Try before you buy.   Take your current lens and spend part of the day shooting it at only 50mm and then spend another part of the day shooting at only 85mm to see which focal length you prefer.
In my experience 50mm was stil too long for general indoor shooting on a crop camera like your T5i.   I traded my 50mm 1.4 for an 85mm 1.8 and used it as a fast indoor sports lens and also for tight portraits.
The EF 85mm 1.8 has a much better build quality and faster AF.  It is also better able to get you that shallow depth of field that many people want.

Yes, that lens will work normally on the EOS 6D with all automatic functions intact. Any Canon lens labeled as "EF" will work on the 6D, but lenses labeled "EF-S" will have strong vignetting (darkening in the corners of the shot).
Actually... "EF-S" lenses will not even mount.  There's a lip on full-frame bodies designed to prevent EF-S lenses from being attached.  It's not just a question of heavy vignetting and severely degraded image quality at the edges of the frame -- there's a risk of the reflex mirror hitting the rear-most element on an EF-S lens (remember... full frame cameras require physically larger reflex mirrors).
Any "EF" lens can be used.  Any "EF-S" lens must not be used (and will not fit).  Also, there are a few special purpose lenses such as the MP-E and TS-E lenses which will work with the 6D as well.

6D requires lenses with an EF mount. You list your lens as an EF (the mount style) 24-85 zoom so yes it will work but it may not provide nice crisp images on such a modern high mpixel camera. The newer bodies show the weaknesses of older consumer grade lenses.

  • Canon Flash 430EX 11 to go with my Canon EOS 70D camera with an 18-135mm lens.

I purchased a Canon Flash 430EX 11 to go with my Canon EOS 70D camera with an 18-135mm lens. The flash displays the icon confirming auto zoom only intermittenly and when it doesn't, twisting the camera zoom does not display on the flash screen.  All batteries are charged and the flash is locked on to the camera.
    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

I'm not entirely certain I understand your question.  The 430EX II has can be put in a mode where it automatically follows the camera zoom (within limits... 24mm to 105mm) but you can ALSO put it into a mode where you manually control the flash zoom.  If it's in the manual control mode then it will not automatically zoom.
It is important that the "wide" panel NOT be in-use (if you pull out and flip down the wide-panel then the flash will go to wide angle and will not zoom EVEN if it was in auto mode.)
Press the Zoom button, then use the - / + buttons to change the zoom.
When under manual control there's a black "M" icon which will appear next the word "Zoom".  If the "M" is not present then it's in auto zoom mode.
Lastly... when you change the zoom on the camera lens, typically nothing will happen on the flash UNTIL you wake the system by doing a half-press of the shutter button.    When the camera wakes up to meter and focus... that's when it adjusts the zoom on the flash head.

  • Canon 18-135mm IS Lens....Jumps during manual focus

    Hi,
I recently noticed that my Canon 18-135mm IS lens has a minor issue that I'm not sure if it's a fault or not......
When the manual focus ring is turned, at a certain point it kind of clicks/jumps momentarily.  I noticed this when the lens was at approximately half of the zoom range but I'm not sure if it happens at all zoom ranges.
As far as I can tell, things are still in focus so don't know if it's a problem or not, I'm just wondering whether something could be out of alignment and potentially do more damage ?
    Thanks for any insight

No offence taken....people do stupid things (including me).  But yes, I switched to manual focus first, although I have occasionally forgotten to do so and moved the focus ring a minor amount before realising.
Having looked at it again, the amount of movement is quite small.....I have come to the conclusion from reading other posts online that it's mostly just the movement/play of the zoom lens within the barrel, which sounds quite common on this lens.
    Thanks for the reply.

  • LR4 lens profile for Canon 85mm 1.2

Somehow, I have lost my profile for my lens. I have a profile for the 1.8 85mm but not the 1.2. Same goes for the 50mm 1.2. What do I need to do to find them and install them?

To search for lens profiles on the web you have to download & install the <Adobe Lens Profile Downloader>.
And for the installation of that you need first to download and install <Adobe Air>.
Both programs are free and can be downloaded from Adobe's website.

  • Is the Canon T3i compatible with Canon EF-S 18-135mm f/3.5-5.6 IS STM?

I have this len and camera. When I take a photo through using the LED screen the photo does not register, though it sounds like the photo was taken. When I go to review my photo it does not exist.
If I close the LED screen and look through the view finder the photo sounds like it is taken and it is actually taken and I can review it.  Is there something that I need to reset so I can take photos on automatic through the LED screen?

You have something set wrong.  Reset your camera to factory defaults (clear all settings) first and try again.  Of course you have a good SD card?

  • Canon Lens Wish List ?

    Hello guys
What would be you wish list in terms of lens ?
Post yours here and let's hope the voices will go all the way to Tokyo.
Personally, considering Canon has not announced any bright EF lens (less than 2.8) since 2008, I really miss some exciting fast primes.
The just-announced 35mm f2 IS is the exception to the above, but considering the older canon f1.4 and the new and affordable sigma 35mm f1.4, the 35mm f2 does not qualifies as exciting to me. If you're doing video or like small form factor, you must be quite happy (except your wallet).
Other than this, there is a lot of dark plastic zoom, a lot of Cinema lens (obviously repackaging of existing lenses), and the new M line. But little seems to be done for the FF lover of fast primes. That's too bad considering they have done some amazing lens such as 85II, 200 f2, the new 400mm etc.
The first lens I’d really like is a baby brother to my 200 f2.0 IS. A 135mm f1.4 IS would be perfect, or make it f1.8 if f1.4 is too big. Would clearly buy without second thoughts ! Competition has 135 f1.8 already. I'd rather go for the aperture than the IS.
Then, I really miss the 45mm and 90mm TS-E revisions, why stop at the 24mm for MkII updates ? It’s been a long time and nothing comes, but I would buy both lens very quickly.
I love the 85mm II but the slow AF is not always nice. A faster version would be most welcome. Weather sealed would be nice too.
Then, I have a request for the future 200mm or 400mm.
The idea to have an integrated converter is great, but I can always add this at the back of the lens (wether there is internal converter or not).
But what I cannot do, is make the lens brighter. So I would rather love a brighter lens than a longer lens.
For example, a 135mm 1.4 that would have an internal converter to become a ~200mm f2.0 would be much better to me than a 200mm f2.0 with a internal converter to be a ~300mm f2.8.
In the same way, a 300mm f2 that would internally internally convert to 400mm 2.8 would be better than a 400mm 2.8 that would convert into a 600mm f4. Got it ?
So my top would be :
    1/ 135mm f1.4 (1.8) (IS)
    2/ TS-E !
    3/ Faster 85mm
    4/ more bright primes !
Last but not least, you need to get the lens prices down. The new versions are very expensive, while techonology gets betters, electronics get cheaper, production process gets better, the production volumes are increasing a lot - but we don't see the benefit of it. You now produce one million lens a month, the same as the 1995-2001 period (taken from your own press release). You can't blame it all on the R&D. Make lens much cheaper and we'll buy much more.
So guys, what are your needs and hopes ?

    1. 50 mm F/1.4 IS - which would be Sharp wide open.
I would dare to say that I'm not so interested so much in IS - I will trade the IS for having good-to-very-good results (corner sharpness, not-so-much vignetting) at F/1.4
    2. Better  (U)WA at f/2.8 - better (lesser) distortions, vignetting aso. on a 16-35 f/2.8 - I'm not interested so much in having reach on tele side - In fact I'm doing my work now with Tokina 16-28mm f/2.8 FX exactly because it has lesser distortions on the wide end.
    3. I think that's possible to have a short zoom with an aperture lower than f/2.8. I think that this will be a killer. Having for example something like 40-60 at f/2 will be quite neat. However I'm reserved if this thing would be achievable. Perhaps is better to mention that I would carry a little weight in plus for this (because most probably this will be little bigger and heavier lens than a 24-70).

  • How do I choose my first Canon DSLR camera?

I've had a Sony for 4 years, but owning a Canon is my dream. I've grown as a photographer, winning some contests and doing small family/group shoots. I still need to learn about manual shooting. It's seems like there are so many variations. Then I hear it's not best to buy the kit. I've been looking at the EOS T3i. Can anyone advise me on this?

    Hi,
The standard Canon-assembled "kits" are fine....
Those are the ones where Canon themself has pre-packaged camera and lens(es) together.
With the T3i you'll most commonly find it bundled with the EF-S 18-55mm IS (or IS/STM) lens. You also likely willl find it with both the 18-55mm and the EF-S 55-250 IS (now also sometimes in STM version). An alternative you will somtimes find is the camera with the EF-S 18-135mm IS (also somtimes in STM version), though this "kit" lens is more often bundled with the 60D or 70D, than the Rebel series.
You have to watch out for retailer bundles, where they substitute lower quality items and add a bunch of inexpensive stuff such as a flimsy tripod, an off-brand memory card, some poor quality filters, etc. You will see these online occasionally, from some less than reputible "dealers". Often the prices sound too good to be true, because they are. Sometimes they use bait n switch tactics, telling you things such as the kit doesn't include a battery charger, but they have one available at a steeply inflated price, or that the camera is a special version that has the menu only in some obscure language and that's why it's so much cheaper.
So long as you stick with the more reputible online dealers such as B&H Photo, Adorama, etc. you will generally be fine. Amazon is generally good, too. Many people find good deals at Best Buy, as well. There are many good dealers to choose among... no need to go to some of the shadier ones. A basic rule of thumb... if you find prices that are significantly less than B&H or Adorama, be suspicious. Those are two of the highest volume stores in the U.S., so other dealers are unlikely to be able to beat their prices by very much. If the deal sounds too good to be true, it probably is!
Really all the current Canon DSLRs are quite capable of taking great photographs. There are differences in some of the features, model to model. One of the "factory" kits may be a convenient starting point and can be good, or if you have a bit more to spend you might want to choose a camera model that leaves enough in your budget to be able to upgrade lenses or add other accessories you feel you need.... In most cases, lenses will ultimately make more difference in your photos than the camera they are used upon.
For example, instead of the EF-S 18-55mm "kit" lens, you might want to consider the wider and longer EF-S 15-85mm IS USM lens as a very versatile choice. Or, if you like to shoot in lower light situations, you may prefer the EF-S 17-55mm f2.8 IS USM lens. Instead of the EF-S 55-250mm "kit" lens, you might prefer the EF 70-200mm f4L IS USM or EF 70-200mm f2.8L IS USM.... These are professional grade, workhorse lenses that cost a lot more than the kit lenses, but provide a number of benefits: faster and more accurate autofocus, more effecive image stabilization, higher build quality and better sealing against dust and moisture, and more. Image quality will be better, too.... though the "kit" lenses, used right, are pretty darned capable.
You also might already have some more specialized lenses in mind.... Such as a fast, short telephoto like the EF 50/1.4 or EF 85/1.8 if you plan to shoot a lot of portraits. Or perhaps a macro lens such as the EF-S 60/2.8 USM or EF 100/2.8 USM or 100/2.8L USM IS, if macro photography is something you want to do a lot. Or you might enjoy photographing scenery and want a wide angle lens such as the EF-S 10-22mm USM.
I wish people would spend more time choosing their lenses than their cameras, since the lenses will actually make a bigger difference. And senses chosen well might actually outlast your camera.... I switched to the Canon system in 2001, buying two film cameras and four lenses at the time (I had a really good idea what I needed because I'd already been shooting with a variety of other systems for 20+ years). I still have and use three of those four lenses, and have added a number of others as needs and opportunity arose in the years since.
Meanwhile I've switched from film to digital cameras, and used four different generations of DSLRs extensively (more generations than that if I count short duration use of loaners or rental cameras). Now the development of digital technology has slowed a bit, so there might be less need to upgrade as frequently... But still I expect cameras will come and go... While lenses - bought right - are more of a long term investment.
Think of what you are buying as a "system".... camera, lens(es), and accessories. In addition to the camera and lens(es), you'll need memory cards, possibly spare batteries, lens hoods, maybe some useful filters, an accessory flash, perhaps a tripod, a convenient bag to carry it all around in... Well, you get the idea. You also might need software, a computer that's up to the task or image editing, extra hard drive storage and backup space, etc.
You don't have to get everything right away, but may want to lay out a plan, prioritize what you have to get now and what you'd like to add later based upon your needs.  Don't worry if your plans might change over time (they will!)... just lay out a plan now as a starting point.
    Have fun shopping!

    Hello Steven,
The ICA driver is for scanning, not for printing. For Mac OS X 10.6, you need to install the Canon CUPS driver v10.26.
    You can download the driver via this link;
    http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100137502.html
Looking at the steps, it appears this would have been for a Mac OS X 10.5 installation, given the reference to not using CUPS. It also looks like it could have been one of my replies, although I doubt that I told the user to install the ICA driver for a printing issue. As I said, it is just for scanning and it was only released after Snow Leopard was released.

    Hi Zach.
Sorry to say but Elements 12 came out several months before your camera. Adobe stops updating camera raw files for old software editions so that people have to buy new versions of the software when they get a new camera. It happened to me with LR3 when I got a new camera.
There are works rounds but they are a lot of extra steps and I think you would be converting the files to Some format other than RAW (tiff?) and which I am not sure will perform the same.
I think you just need to get a newer version of Elements.

  • HELP!!! I do the yearbook for my elementary school. I took a lot of pictures on my Canon EOS rebel

HELP!! I do the yearbook for my elementary school.  I took a lot of photos on my Canon EOS rebel t3i and was transferring them to my computer when I get impatient.  I pulled the disc out of the computer while it was still trying to read it.  Then I put it back in the computer to try to start over.  When that didn't work I put the disc into the camera to see if I could read them there.  The photos did not show in the camera so making things even worse I took a picture to see if it was working at all.  I was able to take a picture but it said that only 1 picture was on the disc.  Then I put the disc back into the computer and it came up showing the icons for the original photos but kept spinning and spinning and didn't do anything.  Now it won't even do that much but what happens now is I get the DCIM folder like normal, then the 100CANON folder and then a folder that says  ╟/ 0A1.u when i try to open that folder it says, "The filename, directory name, or volume label syntax is incorrect."  Is there any hope for getting the pictures back or making this disc useable again?  Thank you for your time and your help!  I feel like saying, "Help me o b canon experts you're my only hope!"

Well, first may I say I think it is appalling that an elementary school would ask a kid between the ages of 6 and 11 like yourself to shoulder such a responsibility.  Budget cuts are what they are, but kids should not be expected to pick up the slack.  You have done remarkably well under these shocking circumstances.  And you write way beyond your age group, which is a credit to yourself and your teachers.
You should tell your parents to contact their state congressman and demand that they increase funding for schools, or else drop the yearbook program.

  • Lens correction profile for the Canon 18-135 STM lens in Lightroom 5 ?

How or where can I get the lens correction profile for the Canon 18-135 STM lens in Lightroom 5 ? In effect he is not available in my list of correction lens so my lightroom is up to date apparently :/
    Thanks in advance for answer.

There are two types of Lens profiles - raw and JPEG. It looks like you are trying to process a JPEG image and Adobe has only provided a raw lens profile for the 18-135mm IS STM lens.
    You have four options:
    1) Check for available lens profile using the Adobe Lens Profile Downloader. I checked and a JPEG lens profile is NOT available for the 18-135mm lens.
    2) Follow the procedure outlined by Steve Sprengel in this post:
    http://feedback.photoshop.com/photoshop_family/topics/lr_5_lens_profile_not_applied_for_jp g_captures_only_for_raw_captures
More detailed instructions here for a Pentax lens example:
    http://www.pentaxforums.com/forums/post-processing-articles/176761-creating-adobe-lens-cor rection-profiles-jpgs-raw-ones.html
This allows using the available raw lens profile with JPEG images. To my knowledge Canon DSLR cameras do not apply distortion correction to JPEG images, so the raw profile should work well. You can check this by shooting raw+JPEG and comparing the two images inside LR
    3) Create you own lens profile using the Adobe Lens Profile Creator. (A complicated process, but it can be done!).
    4) Start shooting in raw mode or raw + JPEG mode, which will allow you to extract the most benefit from LR's processing controls.

  • Need the right flash unit for Canon Rebel EOS T3i to use as separate fill light.

Im looking to have a separate flash unit for my Rebel T3i purchased in 2012.    My old Canon speedlight 300EZ was for my old 35mm. film Canon EOS 650 and is somewhat limited.   I have a Phottix Strato II Multi Transmitter and Receiver set but I can't get it to work with the old 300 EZ speedlight.
    Thanks,
    Zeida Cecilia-Mendez

A Canon 430ex would be a good flash for not a lot of money. So would a Phottix Mitros.
The best thing would be to have 2 or 3 flashes so you can shoot with a more 3-d professional look, though you'd need an extra receiver or else you can simply buy a pair of Phottix Mitros Plus flashes, which have a transmitter and receiver built in. I have 3 of the Mitros + units and I love them.
