Canon-Adobe, JPG v RAW

When shooting Canon 5DII in JPG, Adobe Elements and Lightroom both import the complete images with all variations selected under the cameras Picture Style settings.
When shooting in RAW, Adobe ignores these variables and imports ONLY the RAW image directly from the image sensor, ignoring all settings selected under Picture Styles. This is true in both sRGB and AdobeRGB.
There is nothing about this in the Canon 5DII manual.
This makes Picture Styles useless when shooting in RAW !?

Just a bit more info:
In my own case, I have set my Canon dSLR to the default settings, then I have Camera Raw defaults set up that provide, as a starting point, color/exposure appearance that look very much like what the camera delivers in the embedded JPEG. Then I tweak the settings from there, often ending up with quite different results from the starting point.

  • Canon 7d mark II raw files open error

Photoshop elements 12 will not open the canon 7d mark II raw files, from what I read elements are not going to upgrade there camera profiles anymore, so anything new your just out of luck?  The support people have no clue.

    Faq:
FAQ: Will Photoshop Elements work with my camera, or Why won't my raw files open?
    more specifically:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
in which you find that your camera requires the ACR 8.7 version
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
in which you see that PSE12 can't, and that PS13 can with an update.
So what solution, since Adobe does not upgrade older versions? It's the free Adobe DNGconverter:
Use the latest version of the free DNG Converter (for Macintosh or Windows)
You can convert your files to the universaly compatible DNG format (the files will work with any version of the Camera Raw plug-in). See In depth : Digital Negative (DNG) for more information.
This standalone utility lets you batch convert whole folders of raw files to the DNG raw format that your PSE12 can read.

  • Problem opening Canon 5D Mark II raw files

Adobe support has started a case file #181481276 on my problem.  I recently had my hard drive replaced so I had to reload my photoshop elements 7.  It wouldn't open the Canon 5D Mark II raw files so I downloaded the latest raw plug-in 5.5 for PSE 7.  Still wouldn't open the raw files.  I may not be doing the right thing with the clunky #%&# zip files.  Adobe support said I should download the raw plug-in 5.2 (seems if 5.2 would work subsequent plug-ins like 5.5 should also work).  I downloaded 5.2 and nada no help.  Am I doing something wrong with the zip files?  I open each of the three files that downloaded (even moved them to the Adobe folder in the C program files folder).  My operating system is XP Professional.

Adobe support is generally unreliable.  You should install the latest version of ACR, 5.6.  It's easy to make a mistake with the manual installation instructions.  See this FAQ for troubleshooting:

  • I'm running CS4 and use a Canon T3i to shoot RAW. Which camera raw patch do I need?

I'm running CS4 and use a Canon T3i to shoot RAW. Which camera raw patch do I need? I get his error when trying to install the latest patch: "Adobe Application Manager is needed to resolve this problem, however it is missing or damaged. Download a new copy of Adobe Application Manager or install this product again."

If the camera is newer than the last version of Camera Raw that was released for an older version of Photoshop, you won't be able to get direct, convenient "open file" support for the raw files.
You can check per these links:
Minimum Camera Raw version required for a particular camera:
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
Camera Raw versions available for update with various Photoshop releases:
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Just glancing at those links, Photoshop CS4 can update to only as far as Camera Raw 5.7.  Unfortunately, the minimum required version to work with your T3i is Camera Raw 6.4.
Your fallback position will be to either convert your raw files to DNG format with the latest free DNG converter release, or get a newer version of Photoshop.  The later has an advantage in that there have been substantial improvements to Camera Raw in recent releases.

Installed the CC updates yesterday. Downloaded pics from my Canon 70D in Camera Raw. Since the updates Bridge no longer recognizes them; advises me to get the latest update, which I have. Both Photoshop CC's recognize the pics, just not Bridge (thanks for having Photoshop now show thumbnails of CR pics). Any Ideas on how to fix?

Thanks for the link Jeff. Couldn't find any links on the Adobe site.
Even with that link though, I was still left puzzled as it didn't give multiple versions, just a 32 bit and 64 bit version.
I tried the 64 bit and it didn't work, so I assumed that was what had already been installed in the update.
Now installed the 32 bit version, and fingers crossed. At least it starts up now!

  • When showing JPG and RAW files as one, which do we see and which is edited?

    Hi Guys,
Hoping someone out there will have the answer to this.
Just come back from a long trip with thousands of pics in RAW, I like to use Canon DPP to generate the JPGs quickly and to give me Canons interpretation on the RAW image. (Apparently same processing as in camera).
Once imported into Lightroom 3, I have set up to view the JPG and RAW files as one.
    There are two questions:
1.) Which of the two is the visible one in Library mode? can one set the preference?
    2.) Which is edited?
I do not really want to fully develop all the pics in Lightroom as some of the standard shots have come out perfectly and at the same time I feel I need to be able to compare them.
Any help offered would be greatly appreciated.

1.) Which of the two is the visible one in Library mode? can one set the preference?
Raw only. The jpeg is sort of like sidecar. Cannot set a preference. The only setting you can change is to view them separately.
    2.) Which is edited?
    Raw only.
... and at the same time I feel I need to be able to compare them.
Lightroom's Canon-specific DNG profiles are developed to match Canon's picture styles (or whatever they are called). So, if you use, say, the Faithful Picture style in Camera, Lightroom's "Camera Faithful" profile will render your raws very close to DPP, if not identical. That's for default settings. However when you start adjusting, Lightroom's and DPP's processing may differ.
You may not even need those Jpegs for comparison, after all.

  • Hantera Canon 7D mark 2 RAW format bilder?

Jag har Photoshop Elements version 11 på min PC.
Hur uppdaterar jag min Elements version för att hantera Canon 7D mark 2 RAW format bilder?

You can pay for an upgrade to PSE13, or you can use the DNG Converter 8.7 or newer to create DNGs from the CR2s and open those in your older PSE/ACR.
The free DNG Converter is available on the Adobe Updates page:

  • JPG and RAW files are not grouped together.

I am finding that my RAW and JPG files are not grouped together.  They show up on the Grid View as JPG for the JPG file and RAW + JPG for the NEF(RAW) file.  This does not seem to be consistent through out the folder.  Some of the pictures are grouped together and others are not.  The ones that are not grouped together have been auto-stacked and then unstacked.  I am not sure if this is what caused the seperation of JPG and RAW files.  I did try to take a picture that I had auto-stacked it  and then remove it and it did not sepearate.  The "Treat JPG files next to raw files as seperate photos" option is turned off, like it is in my Lightroom 3.

This is what I'm talking about:
    Show subfolders are on:
    In windows Explorer:
    In the Import Dialog:
    Where are the files?
If I click on the Folder 2014_12_14... all the files from all folders will populate.

  • LR 1.3 Mac not Importing JPGS with RAWs

I'm trying to import both RAWs and JPEGS at the same time and LR 1.3 is not doing so well. With previous versions I was able to import both a raw file (converting it to DNG in the importing) and bring along the accompanying JPEG (as a sidecar) at the same time. Now, 1.3 is no longer doing that. I can either import a RAW file only, or treat the additional JPEG as a separate image. This is no good. I need to import both RAW and JPEG at the same time and have LR rename the files (both RAW and JPEG) with the same names. What happened?

Yeah. I've double checked this several times. When I used to import as DNGs, I would get the JPGs copied into the folder that I designated and, in LR, the name above the thumbnail would be something like "D80_0001.dng+JPEG." So, I know that whatever I was able to do then is broken now.
The only solution I can come up with is several (tedious) steps:
1 - Import NEFs as DNGs. This I can do by turning off the "Treat JPEG files next to raw files as separate photos" in the Prefs. When the Import box opens, it shows only the NEFs. Then I start importing.
2 - Go back to the Prefs and turn the above feature on again.
3 - Go back to Import and select all the JPGs from amongst the JPGs and NEFs in the folder. Then import them into the same folder the DNGs were imported to. This way, the JPGs can have the same name as their DNG counterparts.
4- Go back into the LR library and open the folder with all the images and selectively delete all the JPGs from the library. You see, I don't want the JPGs in the library; I just want the RAW files. But I do want the JPGs and RAW files stored together on my hard drive.
Please, can this be fixed. This has put a serious crimp into my workflow. You know what it's like to have to selectively choose JPGs from NEFs in a folder containing 900+ images!?

  • Can I merge a JPG and RAW folder in a catalog and keep the edits?

I usually shoot RAW plus JPG and always used to copy all of them into the same folder. That worked fine, but was a little pointless as the JPG was only used as a temporary preview before the RAW was loaded in behind it. For speed of editing at events, I started to split the files in to two separate folders and import both, but tag and do basic edits, crops etc on the JPGs so for 'news' website use, then work on any higher quality client requirements from the RAW. It would be nice if I could later merge the two together so that those basic edits - and ratings etc - were then applied to the RAW files. They have the same names - bar the extensions, of course - having be renamed by LR on import. I tried it on a test shoot, but it just seems to add separate JPG and RAW images to the catalog. Is there a way to have it associate the unedited RAW with the edited JPG?

    Hello Guy gswarbrick,
I am not sure I understand where your current workflow with the JPGs saves you time:
Do you load them into your LR catalog, and do you do the ratings and crops there?
Then for selling on the web you export the JPGs thusly edited from LR?
Do you use a laptop on site/in the field for this?
I am just wondering, where you would actually loose time if your workflow would be the following:
General preparation of your LR set-up:
Define a default develop setting for RAWs that matches your camera's JPG-conversion pretty fine, so that the result would be almost identical without any explicit develop edit.
Define a default export setting for your JPGs to be sold on the web on the day: choose the quality, the size (resizing rules) fit for web, colour space most probably sRGB, ... (no adding to the catalog)
    Workflow during the shooting day:
Only import RAWs, no JPGs at all.  [Do you fear this takes longer than imprting the JPGs?]
Do the quick stuff during the day like you do today on the JPGs, just on the RAWs. Should also be rating/labeling and cropping, nothing more thanks to your prepared default develop settings.
...Compared to any option with ExifTool or the like for the final RAW-work (4.) you would definitely save the time there.
So the question is: would you really loose time during the critical phase on shooting day?
I guess not, provided your default develop settings achieve pretty much your camera's jpg-conversion. You may need to experiment a little there, make these defaults specific to ISO ranges and camera serial number if you shoot with several cameras, but once this prep is done there should be no more substantial delay.
Unless you post the images directly from camera to the web without passing through LR catalog. Or your field laptop would be of very low spec.
Where to start? Let's start with my laptop; it's about the highest spec available, coupled with Sandisk Extreme Pro cards and a high speed card reader. What about my fear that importing the RAWs would take longer than the JPGs? Well, a small, basic JPG is about 500k, the equivalent uncompressed RAW file is 12Mb, so I reckon about 24x as long to import - give or take. Plus the time to render the RAW file, which isn't required for the JPG. And that's assuming I'm not adding default develop settings, which have a small but not insignificant overhead. For that reason, the RAW imports are usually done after the events or during (rare) breaks.
I've arrived at this workflow through 5 years of experimentation. RAW-only simply does not work for these sorts of events. Most of my 'competitors' shoot JPG-only, for that very reason, but I don't want to lose the RAW option for the print work.

  • BUG:  With same name jpg and RAW in same folder

OK, we have established that you can't import same filenames RAW/jpg into the same folder, but you can drag them in later. This is useful for stacking.
Bugs that occur when jpg and RAW with same name together in same folder. (have not tested for psd, tif etc.
    1. If you rename the jpg, the RAW also gets renamed
    2. You cannot move the jpg properly within the folder in grid mode.
Most of my landscape shots need to go to photoshop. I developed a nice workflow which integrates PS quite well with LR...see post here:
    http://www.adobeforums.com/cgi-bin/webx/.3bc34679/5
I created the workflow so that I could retain same name RAW/jpg stacks in the same folder. I have altered the workflow slightly so the jpg gets autorenamed with filename_# ... see the link above.
    Kev

It's the same design issue Kevin. Sidecar files get renamed automatically and these are treated as sidecars.

  • Where do I find the Adobe PS Camera Raw plug in

I have Adobe PS CS6 Extended.  Where do I find the Adobe PS Camera Raw plug in ???

It depends on what operating system you're running.
On Windows x64 you'll find it in two places (32 bit and 64 bit plug-ins):
    32 bit:  C:\Program Files (x86)\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS6\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi
    64 bit:  C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS6\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi
On Windows 32 bit it will be here:
    C:\Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS6\File Formats\Camera Raw.8bi
I'm not completely sure for a Mac, but an internet search implies that it's here:
    Hard Drive/Application Support/Adobe/Plug-Ins/File Formats/CS6
