Canon as1000 vs Sony s980

I am needing a new camera, and am making my first foray into digital, and have narrowed my picks down to these two: the Canon AS1000 or the Sony S980. Does anyone have any opinions?
My needs for a camera are primarily this:
-Able to take quality pictures during the day and night, both indoor and outdoor (like, Disneyland at night, block party during the day).
-Limited lag time on flash.
-I will be making 8x10's or bigger on about 1-3% of all pictures I take.
-Red-eye reducer/eliminator.
-Auto-focus, or a function that pretty much allows me to point and shoot, and let the camera do all the thinking.
Essentially, I really want a digital camera that is going to act as simple yet be as durable as my trusty 35mm camera I am wanting to retire. It needs to be an everyday, all-purpose camera.
I have done some research on both of the cameras, and have questions or see drawbacks on each, but I guess I can save that part of the conversation for later, if this thread gains momentum.
Thanks for looking.

OK< so I might be able to score a good deal on a Sony W230. DOes anyone have any input on this camera, based upon my needs for a camera as stated above?

  • Canon 5dMII and Sony A900 support

New released cameras need ACR and Lightroom support for Canon 5dMII and Sony A900.

Jeff, CS4 shipping dates have not been announced (I'm on the list to be notified when CS4 will ship. There is no announcement... yet speculation of end of October shipping is from adobe saying they expect CS4 to ship in Fourth quarter 2008. no guarantee of that shipping date, until it's announced. In Fourth quarter 2008 could be end of December, we have to wait and see) As for 5DMII the shipping date is rumored at end of November 2008, but not announced, and that date seems to be headed toward mid-December or January.....I do agree that LR2.1 and ACR4.6 will likely be released by Fourth quarter, pending no major bugs are found in either program.
I expect adobe gets cameras for testing and profiling when reviewers received the camera. So, yes, If production cameras are available to a select few I expect adobe, to have the camera and, to be building support for the camera including that support once they complete their profiling; regardless of the camera shipping date.
LJ the unofficial support for the A900 is due to ACR using the A700 raw profile to work with the A900 RAW files. This is not the same as supporting the camera. Yes, it allows A900 owners to work in RAW, but not with the correct profile.

  • Can anyone confirm if you can in fact shoot/edit (perhaps using a less than best video setting) on a Canon XA20 or Sony HXR-NX30U with iMovie 10 (Mavericks)? I do not want to convert files. Thx.

  • Canon 5D vs Sony HDR200 Cam

My dear friends I wanna share some experience with you all here
Couple month ago I stated a topic regarding Canon 7D vs Sony HD camera
Many people agreed that Canon 7D will beat most of the sony camcorders
Last week a friend of mine brought his Canon 5D to record an outdoor shoot
I believe it shoots 1080p, , btw my friend has been in this business since last 10 years, so he knows what he does
long story short, we captured the footage and put it along with the footage that I shot using anHDR200 HD sony on the timeline , I noticed a huge different between the 2 footage
The fooatge that were shot by Sony HDR200 is so crisp and clear, the footage using Canon 5D is not all that, thank God I didn't buy the Canon 7D or 5D .
    Comments please !

"NeoScene stretches the 30p output to 29.97p. The latest version slows down the audio to match. This is awesome when using just 5D2s, but once you try to cut it with another camera and other audio, you might have problems.
The two solutions I see are these:
    1) Just use the 30p output as 30p. Let it drop the occasional frame. At least everything syncs.
    2) Use the 30p output slowed down to 29.97. Every time you cut to the 5D with externally recorded, sync'd audio, you have to slow down only that part of the audio. Where you cut to your other cameras, leave the audio alone (assuming that the audio isn't from the 5D)."

What I am understanding is that if you don't care about the audio, the video isn't really an issue.
I'll get into the project and see where it goes.

  • Does Premiere E support video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX?

Does anyone know if I can edit video shot with Canon 5D or Sony XDCAM EX? I did some research but can't find the answer!

Which version of PrE are you looking into? PrE 10 has DSLR Presets that cover the Canon 5D. Not sure about the XDCAM EX, but this ARTICLE covers the supported formats. I know that PrPro CS 5.5 offers full, native support for XDCAM footage, but do not see it in the PrE list.

  • Canon HV10 or Sony HDR-HC3 for iMovie HD 6

    In case you're interested…
I'm in the process of reviewing both the Canon HV10 and the Sony HDR-HC3. Both use Mini DV tapes. I've heard hard disk models don't work with iMovie HD6.
I've tried both on my Intel iMac at 2.16 Gz and this is what happened…
    Sony HC3
I used Firewire cable (must be Firewire - Sony calls it iLink) and plugged in the cam with iMovie already opened. Clicked to the camera icon and… Nothing happened. There was no recognition of the camcorder at all. Zilch. I fiddled, checked the camcorder's audio was set to 16bit and changed several prefences in iMovie but still nothing. I had previously set the cam's time too. I've since learned the HC3 and many other Sony's are incompatible with iMovie HD. It's a lovely camcorder but unless you download some extra software – as mentioned in the forums – it ain't gonna work.
    Canon HV10
Performed the same Firewire connections and, lo, the camcorder was detected and I was able to begin importing HD visuals. But then… On immediate playback after importing I noticed the audio was running at half speed – subtley – the visuals too. I spent hours shooting short bits, importing them with other settings, and every time voices came out low and slurred. My wife sounded like a bloke. I posted the problem here and someone told me the HD takes a long time to render. So bear that in mind. And don't be impatient like me.
In this instance, the Canon wins.

    Apple iMac 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.8)
    Apple iMac 2.16   Mac OS X (10.4.8)

I'm really confused now. I've set the HC3's settings to HDV (not Auto) and the iLink Conv to OFF. And still no joy. I've even tried 'Magic Movie' for which it searched for a camera but found nothing. I know the Firewire cable works because I've used it on the Canon and my own, older Digital-8 Sony Handycam.

  • Canon as1000 won't focus to infinity

the camera won't focus to infinity like it did when it was new. i'm not sure if the warranty has run out, but i'm ready to put it in the circular file. i have tried the normal and infinity settings and the camera does not focus, even though the square on the lcd display turns green.
p.s. - love my rebel t3 and more so since i found an adapter so i can use my fd lenses. love having a 320 (200) 2.8.
    cheers from l.a.

    Progress!
Solution for anyone else with the same problem...
    On page 2 of
    http://www.usa.canon.com/CUSA/assets/app/pdf/cloud/GCP_Register_the_Printer_to_GCP.pdf
    it says:
[Google Cloud Print] This function is available only when IPv4 is selected for TCP/IP settings on Other settings from LAN settings. For instructions about displaying Other settings on the operation panel, refer to the on-screen manual (user's guide) that comes with the printer.
To solve my problem, I toggled through the printer's touch sensitive display menu: LAN Settings--->Other settings--->TCP/IP settings--->IPv4 and selected Automatic to set up. Thereafter, printer could connect to internet.

  • Canon GL2 or Sony HD camcorder for web video project

I'm about to start a web video project and need to make my year end purchases for tax purposes. The videos will be edited in Final Cut for use on the web - YouTube. They will be shot outside and range from 3-5 minutes edited. I'll want to shoot 16x9. What camera is best for this purpose and yield the best results. Workflow is also important as I want the process to be easy enough to facilitate the daily upload of new videos.
    Thanks

Shooting HDV isn't my favorite workflow... read the article about editing HDV in the current issue of the Creative COW magazine: http://magazine.creativecow.net/index.html
Shooting 16X9 DV would be faster to do IMHO...
That said, all compression is sort of a garbage in/garbage out situation. The better the picture, the better the end product, so it's a tough call in that price range... if you could jump up a bit to a P2 camera, things would be good all around workflow wise... but it's a bit of a jump... the HVX200 is selling for about $5200 or so... plus recording media... but it would more than compete with HDV (in fact it's much better looking to my old eyes) and it renders almost as fast as DV does...

  • Which HD camcorder?  Sony - Canon - Panasonic

Currently I use a Panasonic MiniDV with great results
but not HD and would like to upgrade to HD.
I am looking at three HD camcorders and would like
to see if anyone has an opinion of them.
The three HD cameras I am looking at:
    Sony HDR-HC3 - MiniDV tape
    Canon HV10 - MiniDv tape
    Panasonic HDC-SD1 - Memory card (4gig = 1 hour recording)
I am not interested in a DVD disc camcorder.
    Harold

Hi guys, I'm estimating hd camcorder between Canon
    HV10 and Sony HDR-HC3.
but what do you really mean with "you will need to
convert the footage to something imovie can use"
I don't think you need to convert it.
Can I import hd video direct in iMovie from this
    camcorder?
Probably; Apple is very good with camcorder support.
    See:
    http://www.apple.com/ilife/imovie/features/importing.html
    and
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=43000
"iMovie works with most DV camcorders that have a FireWire connection. For information on cameras that Apple has tested and qualified for use with iMovie, see the following:
For iMovie 1 see "iMovie 1.0.x: Compatible Camcorders"
For iMovie 2 see "iMovie 2: Compatibility"
For iMovie 3 see "iMovie 3: Compatibility"
For iMovie 4 see the iMovie webpage.
Tip: Devices that are not on the qualified device list may still work. Results will vary depending on the device. Consult with the camera's manufacturer for additional compatibility information."

  • My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video camera (Canon GL2) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable.

My new MacBook Pro and Imac can't recognize my digital video cameras (Canon GL2 or Sony) via FireWire 800 9 pin to 4 pin cable. I've tried two different cables.  Any suggestions?  Thanks.

Is your DV camera plugged in to AC power (not batteries only)? When you step down from 9 pins to 4 pins, you lose the "power" pins.

  • Sharpness issues with my canon. Not sure which lens would be best for video.

I have several lenses and I use the tamron 17-50.  My issue is that even though I do use manual focus, I don't seem
to get a very clear picture even with stills.   I even went inside canon to adjust the forcus and I am getting the same results.  I have 2 sony HDV FX7 that gives sharper  videos.  I would of thought Canon would of beat that!  Anyway, I am amature and still need to learn.  I have seen other videos that are so clear,  I really want to learn what I am doing wrong.
    Canon 7d, Canon 50d, 2 sony FX7.

I can’t speak to video, but obviously that camera is capable of producing clear sharp images.  It’s hard to nail down the issue without seeing images and knowing your setup, but here’s a couple of possibilities:
A bad lens: it’s possible it just won’t lock on tact sharpness.  Do your other lenses have this issue?
Microadjustment: A lot of lenses are off focus by just a little bit.  But this is really only an issue at large apertures.  You can set the microfocus on your camera for each lens.  I’m assuming you just sent your camera to Canon, not the lens and camera together?
Camera Technique: are you using slow shutter speeds?  Maybe it’s camera shake.
Apertures:  Are you using apertures at the extreme ends of the scale?  Wide open will have a thin depth of field, so only a small portion of the picture will be sharp.  Conversely, if you stop down too much then diffraction will soften the entire image.
Filters: do you have any filters on the lens?  Cheap filters can soften images.
Also: are you shooting raw or jpg for stills? What program are you using for post-processing?

  • Sony Alpha 100 WB not matching "As Shot" in ACR 3.7

I have heard that for some cameras, the values don't match up perfectly, but isn't ACR supposed to read the WB from the out of camera raw file and display it as that? For example, if I manually set the WB in camera to 5200K G0, when I open the file in ACR, it displays (and adjusts) to something other than that under the "as shot" preset. While it's not off by a lot, maybe a max of +/- 300K and +/- 11 for the tint, it's still a problem when I want to batch process. It does vary with shots of almost identical composition.
Another question that I have is how can I have a default setting of 0 for the exposure slider, ect, without having ACR adjust the OOC shot to those settings? For example, lets say I have a shot that was properly exposed when I shot it. If I have the default exposure setting at 0 in ACR, when I open it (or display it in bridge) it lowers or raises the exposure to 0. Shouldn't it make the exposure value from the camera 0 (x=0 exposure) for that shot?

    Michael,
Your assumption about WB differences assumes there is something sacrosanct about what the Sony engineers put into the WB algo in your camera. There really isn't. The finer distinctions are going to rely on your eye in the end with virtually any camera and editing application. Allow me to approach the matter from a broader perspective.
Light temperatures are never a constant, even in full Sun--lots of variables, and that is why many cameras, and all image editors (worth using) have approximations (like Sun, Cloudy, and various artificial light sources, etc)that you can choose--as well as auto. Those are at best only close approximations of the conditions of any shot--except maybe in a controlled lighting context in a studio where you have calibrated everything (and rpeated it about every two weeks). It is an engineering design. That is why 'Nikon' color and 'Canon Color' and 'Sony Color' differ.
If you want even closer tolerances, carry a Gray card, and use it liberally when you sense a lighting change or shift from sun to shade, for example. That will just be a better approximation (providing that the angle of the card to the light source(s)doesn't throw that off :)
The best advice, IMO, is to learn to rely on the feedback between your 'eye' and the image before you in the editor--and the objective there ought not to be simply trying to remember the lighting you saw when you shot--really subjective, and impossible--but to produce that lighting that you consider most effective with respect to the whole image before you on the screen--and that is a lot of parameters besides WB. Let's call it 'Michael's Color.
Getting the best photographically out of an image is subjective and requires balancing the effects of the many adjustments available in whatever application you are using. It is easy to forget that a photographic image is just a media analogue of the real world, not a replication of it, designed by you --or left to the Sony and Adobe engineers' default 'auto' senses of how it ought to be.

  • Canon HV10 Not Recognized By Final Cut Express HD

Final Cut Express will not initialize my new HV10. iMovie has no problem downloading so I do not believe it is my computer, a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC. Anyone know if this a problem with the software?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Not only Canon HV10,
my Sony HCR-HC3E also has this problem.
The quality of footage after capture is very poor.
When I use iMovie to capture the footage,
iMovie show that it is using the codec 1080i25.
Final Cut Express HD has not provide this codec,
    only has 1080i50 and 1080i60.
I have ask about this, the feedback is that there is no
    codec that call 1080i25.
    How can I do?

  • Best DSLR with Sony EX-1 and FCS

Looking to invest in a DSLR to use as a "B" camera for interviews and was wondering which model from Canon, Nikon or Sony would work best with our SONY EX-1. Price around $2000- $3000.
Obviously, I don't want it to match perfectly just something that has a fairly smooth and stable workflow.
    Thanks,

Canon 7D, or Panasonic GH3.  With the Canon you can Log and Transfer the footage into FCP as ProRes, with the use of the Canon EOS Log and Transfer plugin.  But you can also use MPEG STREAMCLIP or Compressor to convert.
And you can use those with the GH3, if you shoot H.264, but it also shoots AVCHD...in which Log and Transfer should work. Or you can use ClipWrap2 to convert that footage.
