Canon Battery Grip BG-E14 with the EOS 70D

Recently purchased the Canon BG-E14 battery grip to replace a third party battery grip for my new EOS 70D. The reason for replacing the third party grip with the more expensive Canon grip was a problem with using AA batteries with the third party product. At the time, I thought the reason the AA batteries were not working was because the grip was not a Canon product.
Turns out the Canon BG-E14 battery grip also does not work with AA batteries, but I not sure now if it's the grip or the camera causing the issue. I need to use AA batteries because of camping for long periods of time (no access to electricity) in remote areas. The battery indicator will show “Full” for about five minutes, then quickly go down to empty. The camera will shut down after about 6 minutes and if you keep turning the camera back on then you can continue shooting a few more pictures. I have use other Canon battery grips in the past with AA batteries with no issues, so again maybe the issue is with the new EOS 70D.
Does anyone have any knowledge on what could cause this issue of the AA batteries not working with the EOS 70D battery grip BG-E14? AND how is Canon fixing this issue (since this is an expensive Canon product that is not working as designed)?
Thanks,

Canon's rechargeables are Lithium Ion batteries.  If you were to plot a graph of the power output from the battery as it is drained, you'd find that it provides a fairly steady voltage and then only drops at the very end when the battery is basically dead.
Non-rechargeable alkaline batteries don't behave like this.  The voltage slowly drops as the battery drains and this may be fooling the camera into thinking it's got a dead battery (because the voltage doesn't normally drop on rechargeables until the very end.)
I use Sanyo Eneloop rechargeables and, if you're planning to take a huge pile of AA batteries camping, then I'd highly suggest that you specifically get the Eneloop brand.  The Eneloops are "low self discharge".  Most rechargeable batteries loose an astonishing amount of their charge within just 24 hours of being charged up -- simply through "self discharge".  Eneloops are designed to not self-discharge.  Sanyo claims that a charged Eneloops will still hold 90% of it's charge even after sitting on a shelf for 1 year after being charged.
I use Eneloops in all my speedlites.  I normally just use the Canon batteries in my 5D III battery grip... but I through 6 Eneloops into the AA battery tray just as a test.  I'll let you know how long it lasts (so far I've shot dozens of shots in the last 10 minutes and the battery power indicator still shows full as I would expect).
One other question... is the WiFi enabled on your 70D?

  • Ways to configure VISA properties associated with the EOS character in LabVIEW

I am having a great deal of trouble reading consistently from an instrument (HP5328A Universal Counter) and am investigating the EOS character. In ibic, there are 6 properties of interest accessed through the ibconfig command. The following are the properties and their default settings:
    Board level
    - IbcEOSchar EOS character is 0 (zero)
    - IbcEOSrd EOS is ignored during read operations
    - IbcEOSwrt EOI not asserted when EOS sent
    Device level
    - IbcEOSchar EOS character is 0x0A (set in ibdev)
    - IbcEOSrd EOS ignored during read operations
    - IbcEOSwrt EOS not asserted when EOS sent
I would like to be able to programmatically set these at the beginning of my LabVIEW
program. The only relevant VISA properties in the INSTR or GPIB BoardInterface classes I can find are:
    - Send End Enable
    - Suppress End Enable
    - Termination Character
    - Termination Character Enable
The defaults in my LabVIEW program for both VISA classes mentioned are: Send End Enable is true; Suppress End Enable is false; Termination Character is \10 (Line Feed); and Termination Character Enable is false.
The only property I change is setting the Termination Character Enable to true for both classes. Is there anything else I can do with properties associated with the EOS char? Is there a property like the IbcEOSwrt that may have a part in generating a service request?
Just to confirm, the last two bytes of the instrument's ouput are \CR and \LF. I am using \LF as the EOS. Is this correct or should I be incorporating the \CR in the EOS somehow?
    ANY input is appreciated,
    Chris

    Chris:
VISA "Termination Character" = NI-488 "IbcEOSchar"
VISA "Termination Character Enable" = NI-488 "IbcEOSrd"
VISA "Instr" or "GPIB Instr" = NI-488 "Device level"
VISA "GPIB BoardInterface" = NI-488 "Board level"
VISA cannot automatically add the termchar to the end of the written data (like IbcEOSwrt).
Unless you specifically need to do board-level communication, which is considered advanced, I suggest ignoring that, and sticking to the device-level calls.
If the instrument's ASCII data responses always end in \LF, then yes, just using \LF as the termchar is the correct thing. In fact, with most 488.2 devices you don't need to worry about the termchar, because the final byte of a response also contains EOI. EOI causes the driver to s
top reading from the instrument because it knows that is the end of the response.
You say you're having trouble, but you don't say what the symptom is. Is the read timing out? You might also want to use NI Spy to get a snapshot of what is going wrong.
    I hope this helps some.

  • Can one monitor audio off the eos 70d?

    Hi chuckcox!
    Thanks for posting.
There is not a port on the EOS 70D that allows headphones to be connected for monitoring audio.  However, the camera does have an HDMI port, which carries an audio signal.  You can send the HDMI signal to an external monitor that does allow you to connect headphones and monitor the audio.

  • Does 4G drain the battery more than 3G with the iPhone 5?

Hi im due an upgrade and im thinking about getting 4G, but does it drain the battery more than it does with 3G with the iPhone 5?

the phone can handle it or else it wouldn't be supported. it can also handle LTE which is even faster than 4G in most cases

  • Any portable battery packs that work with the iPhone?

I'll be doing a lot of "line waiting" next week and would like to use the iPhone for entertainment (internet/movie watching). I believe they're rated to last about 6-7 hours but I haven't been getting that much from mine (I'd also want something as a backup in case my battery dies on me and I'm not by a charger (or have the time to let it charge)).
I've seen portable battery packs for the ipod (that plug into the dock connector) but do any work with the iPhone?

I haven't tried one, but I think it's extremely likely that it would work. All the reports are that every iPod charging accessory - wall adapters, car adapters - works with iPhone.

  • Ipod Touch Battery is Drained even with the Ipod Turned off? and how long the batery goes on Stant Mode?

And How long the ipod battery goes with the stant mode ?
    Thanks alot for any one

I did a test on mine.
My 4th generation model running 4.3.1 last 10 days on and in sleep mode.
At the end of 10 days I got the 20% low battery warning.
I would try a RESET on yours.
Hold down the Home button and the Sleep/Wake button at the same time until you see the Apple logo.
It will reset and restart itself in a few minutes.
    See if that helps.

    help

iMacs have been in continuous production since 1998 in hundreds of variants. We can't begin to help without knowing what iMac you have and what Mac OS you are running. "iOS" as shown in your profile cannot runon any Mac computer, only Apple's mobile devices.
Do "About this Mac" from your Apple menu and post what that shows for your OSX version and your processor type. THose are found where I've indicated below with the red arrows:

  • I just bought a Canon MG5422 It prints fine with the wire but wireless it stays offline.

I just bought a Canon MG5422. It works fine by wire but wireless it stays offline. It appears to find the access point. The printer screen shows me my router name and says it's active. Printer still says offline on the computer. When I try to detect the printer it never does. Where so I go from here? Thanks.

    Hi CarlHuskey
As an additional step we can try, I recommend checking if the printer is set "Offline".
Click the start icon, then click Devices and Printers.
Right-Click the printer's icon and select See what's printing in the dropdown menu.
In the next screen click Printer in the menu bar. If Use Printer Offline has a check mark to the left of it, click Use Printer Offline to remove the check. The printer will now be used online.
If you are still unable to print, uninstall the printer completely and then reinstall.  This will ensure that the drivers and port for your printer are properly configured on the system.
Please feel free to Contact Us for additional troubleshooting if these steps don't work.

  • Installing Canon MF4320-4350 (UFRII LT) with the new mountain lion OS.

I cannot get my Canon MF4320-4350 (UFRII LT) printer to work since I installed the new mountain lion OS.  Please help!  Thanks.

If you upgraded to Mountain Lion from Lion or Snow Leopard and had the UFR2 LT driver installed for that OS, you will need to remove the old UFR2 driver and install the latest. Before you do this, if you already created a printer for the MF43xx in Print & Scan, remove this printer.
Then, on the Mac, open Finder and navigate to HD > Library > Printers > Canon and trash the UFR2 and CUPSCMFP folders.
Still in Finder, navigate to HD > Library > LaunchAgents and trash the files "jp.co.canon.UFR2.BG.plist" and "jp.co.canon.CUPSCMFP.BG.plist"
Restart the Mac and after you log back in, install the Canon UFR2 v2.41 driver and then add the MF43xx via Print & Scan.

Cannot find anywhere that sells the battery grip magazine (just the magazine) BGM-E11L. 5D III, Canon battery grip.  I just need the magazine, not the whole battery grip. I checked B&H and Adorama.

Why not try calling Canon directly?  Or try Canon parts.

  • I have purchased a eos 6d. When I use it with the iPhone app the connection dies after about five m

I have a 6d and when I use it with the iPhone app the camera turns off after about five minutes and the connection is lost. So when I am photographing wild life I keep having to break cover to reactivate the connection. Is this correct or is there a way to keep the connection alive.

You just need to go into the menu and set the camera's sleep mode to "off" or "never". It sounds as if it's currently set to 5 minutes.
Letting the camera sit active continuously, i.e. preventing it from going into sleep mode, will drain the battery(ies) a lot faster. I don't have a 6D, nor do I leave them on full time (in fact I set sleep mode to a very short duration, since tapping any button on the camera quickly re-awakens it).... so I really don't know how quickly a battery will drain. But you might be prepared with spares. If battery life is too short for you purposes, you could add a battery grip which will double the battery capacity.
