Canon camcorders

I've heard Canon camcorders are "favored" and are among the most compatible with MacOS. Can anyone explain the difference in technical capabilities between the ZR, Optura and Elura lines? Also, I am told that the ZR is rather noisy and not the most ergonomic- i recall reading several posts to this effect. Any comments?

for the most part, Canon camcorders are very good products, provided you get only the high end products. I've heard that the consumer grade and lower end units have many different problems stemming from import problems, unexplained noises and video images not as clear on your computer, as they were in the camcorder. I don't know. You might want to visit "canon.com" and see if there are any known problems and issues regarding the type of camcorder machine you are using. As for the technical differences and ablilites in the machines you inquired about, I have no information about them. I know for sure, that "canon.com" does provide webpages filled with information regarding their products. I visit them fairly frequently.

I am trying to determine the new project preset for a multi-camera video shot as follows:  3 Canon camcorders,
Main shot is DV (tape) (720x480, 29fps) - ceremony and reception
    b-roll is DVD (mini-disk) (720x480, 29fps) - bride preparations
additional b-roll is AVCHD (1920x1080, 29fps) - groom preparations and misc all day ceremony and reception.
Film is from a wedding, DV contains main footage so I assume it will need to be the base.  I am planning to use the preset for DV-Widescreen.  Is there a better option?  I'm concerned about playback as the three appear to have different PAR.  I'm using Premiere Elements 10 on W8.
Ultimately this will be burned for two formats - one for a DVD that can be watched on a widescreen TV, second for a short clip trailer to go on vimeo.
(And no I won't be doing this again for a wedding that I shoot.)

Please review since I am not sure how you obtained Video 3 tall when you scaled Video 3 with Constrain Proportions in effect.
    Before
    After
It becomes a zoomed in effect to get rid of the black borders. But, there is no tall and thin involved anywhere.
And, after the Scale increase, you can always click on the screen and move the image around a bit

  • IMovie 08 doesn't work with Canon camcorders?

I have a Canon MV890 that works fine with my iMac, Tiger and iMovie 06 but doesn't seem to work with 08 on my MacBook. I came here to post on it but find many other similar posts about not being able to import from Canon camcorders to 08.
Is there any specific reason why so many of us with different format Canon camcorders are having problems and is Apple likely to do something about it? I'm not going to buy a new camcorder just to use 08 obviously.

Your reply just prompted me to try something I thought of after the original post.
All 08 users can download and install 06 FOC (linked on the iMovie 08 page ISTR). Testing it I've found it is possible to import from the Canon to iMovie 06 HD on the MacBook and thereafter save and quit and open the project in 08. The process isn't fast as there's a lot of thumbnail generation to be done but at least its a way around the problem.
Why not install 06 on your iMac and import then open in 08? Let me know if it works for you too.

  • What new Canon Camcorders are compatible with iMovie 11?

    Hi
I'm planning to buy a new MacBook Pro with iMovie 11.  I am also planning to but a new camcorder so I can start take family movies again.  I spoke to a tech at the Apple store who suggested Canon camcorders as a brand.  I'm not looking to spend a lot of money, since the techniology seems to change so quickly.  I have a number of expensive obsolete camcorders.  On the iMovie '11 Supported Page, Apple lists the Canon FS300 & FS30 as compatible.  On Amazon.com, the FS300 series is the 2010 model.  The 2011 model is the FS400 & FS40.  However is the FS400 & FS40 are not listed on the supported camera page.  Is this because is it new?  Or is it there another reason these cameras aren't listed?
    http://help.apple.com/imovie/cameras/en/index.html?lang=en_US
Also, at Apple mentioned MPEG-4 fortmat is the best.  Both the FS300 or FS400 are MPEG-2 format.  Not being technically savy, does this present a problem?

It is possible Apple Engineering hasn't tested those camcorders yet.
Usually a family of camcorders will be compatible, but Apple will not publish it until they can certify.

  • IMovie and Canon Camcorders

I have just took delivery of my new iMac11.1 and cannot import movies from my Canon XH A1 nor my CanonHV 20. Can any one help please? Are the camcorders compatible?

I have a Canon Vixia HV40 and I just plug in and it works beautifully. I believe the HV20 works exactly the same. The window to transfer video automatically comes up.

  • Canon Camcorders XA10 and HFR17 Picture Quality

I have recorded two video shots one with a Canon XA10 and the other with Canon HFR17. Both video quality and bitrates were identical (see attached photos).
I have inserted the two video files in a video editor and the output file is m2ts. If you look closely, the XA10 picture is much sharper than the HFR17 even both video shots have identical bitrates etc. I think the CMOS sensor of the XA10 is much superior. Even when I reduced the frame size of XA10 to 1220, the XA10 output is also sharper.
How can I make both camcorders have the same picture quality?

    Hello Clare27,
With regards to the camcorder picking up audio noise, the answer would be two fold: yes- as it could potentially record any noise which is present near the microphones when recording, and no- as the camcorder should not actively add static or other 'generated' type noise, such as interference.  That can result from things like connections not being plugged in all the way, crossed cables, receivers and transmitters if anything like that is present.
The camcorder should be set to utilize your external microphone/s only and disabling the onboard microphone.  Having the onboard microphone disabled will cut down on the chances of ambient noise being recorded.  Other than that, simply having your microphones themselves set up and used properly should produce a clean signal which is recorded by the camcorder.

  • IMovie9 compatibility with Canon camcorders

The Canon Vixia HF R500 provides the option to record in either Mp4 or AVI format. Can the recording be downloaded directly into iMovie9 if the Mp4 format is chosen?

This sounds like a question about  general Photoshop CS5 use. This forum is specifically for people using the Photoshop CS5 FXG feature with Flash Catalyst.
I recommend you post this question to one of  the more general Photoshop forums:
    http://forums.adobe.com/community/photoshop
Your question will get much wider exposure there, and you are more likely to get an answer from the Photoshop community.

  • HELP! Audio Drops Out When Trying to Capture Canon XL2 Footage

Please help me out here. I'm a freelance camera operator w/ a Canon XL2 and several times now I've gotten calls from the editors saying they're having problems logging my footage, mainly the audio drops out quite a bit, and I'm not talking bout one second for every 2 or 3 minutes. No. It's like every 10 seconds the audio drops in and out.
What's the deal? Two times the guy was using a Panasonic DVX-100A to capture, another time it was a SONY DSR mini-DV deck. With each incident I had to go over with my XL2 and use it as the capture device, which is a pain.
The program they're using is FCP HD or 5. But I think even when they just play the tape in their Sony or Pany cameras, the audio may still suck.
Help me out here, I can't be the only one with this problem.
    Thanks.

Well Robert Swanson, I hope my post wasn't taken offensively, it certainly wasn't meant as such. The only Canon camcorder I owned was the GL1. After switching to Sony's I can honestly say it would take something significant to go back. And, I was merely relating my experiences in trying to capture from other Canon camcorders so that I know where you are coming from. However, I am interested in the HVX being the "noisest" camera on the market. I am seriously considering this camera and would be interested in a review that points this out. I would be using the hard drive recorder instead of P2 cards.

  • Canon AVCHD 30p vs. 60i, encoding times?

I just picked up a new Canon HF-M41 video camera and am presented with the dilema of shooting in either 60i or 30p AVCHD. On this camera, the 30p is 'recorded' at 60i but saved as 30p.
I am literally stuck on the frame rate selection screen of the camera, not certain which frame rate I should go with.
I do most of my publishing to YouTube and to DVD. It seems like 30p would be a better format for me to work with natively on the camera, but I'm not sure how Premiere handles 30p from Canon. Since the video has been shot 60i and then wrapped as 30p, has anyone had enough experience with this to tell me if Premiere does a good job of handling this kind of video?
Alternatively, if I stick with 60i that will allow me to burn blu-ray video in the future. I definitely like that idea. But, if I take 60i video into premier, edit it, then encode it as 29.97 progressive for YouTube what kind of extra encoding time would I be looking at? Twice as long as it would take to encode 30p from the camera? What does THIS video look like? Would it look better or about the same as having done the same process with PF30 shot on the camera itself.
I'm sure many of you have already figured out the best frame rate (60i or PF30) on Canon camcorders when it comes to working in Premiere. If you have any advice please let me know.

I don't like the idea of locking myself out of future Blu-ray authoring (or needing a conversion to make it work).  If it were me, I'd stick to shooting HD at Blu-ray legal specs.  At 1080, that means 24p or 30i only.

  • Canon XA10 and XA20 audio noise

    Hello,
I work with a Canon XA10 and Canon XA20. Both seem to pick up a fair amount of audio noise (like a static shhhhhh), even before I connect wireless microphones. The wireless microphones just intensify it. Is it normal for Canon camcorders to pick up some audio noise? Are there settings to work with to fix this, or should I just plan to continue eliminating the noise in Adobe Audtion, or any other program you would recommend? I greatly appreciate any help you can provide.

  • Canon Camcorder not capturing to Firewire Drive

I am a recent convert to the new FCE from iMovie '08, and have been editing video in FCE for a couple weeks.
Today I tried to capture video from my Canon zr850 camcorder (miniDV) to my "MyBook" external Firewire Drive for the first time using FCE (I have had no problems doing this using iMovie). Each time I tried, the capture stopped after a couple seconds and I got the message "locating timecode break".
As an added bit of info, I am able to control my camcorder remotely through FCE with no problems.
After doing some research on the Apple Discussion Pages, I came across a reference to a problem that Canon camcorders have in having video captured directly to a FireWire Drive. So I tried capturing the video to my iMac hard drive and it worked!
So while I have found the short-term fix to my problem, I do not want to continue capturing to my hard drive.
Does anyone know what is going on?
    Thanks in advance...

Things apparently work better on separate buses. On my iMac there is only one bus, but then I only have two FW400 ports. Whether or not you have problems depends on which camera it is and which external drives you use. I have had good luck with my Canon XH-A1 and LaCie, Buffalo, and Maxtor external drives, though I seem to have more trouble when I have more than two external drives connected simultaneously.
Give it a whirl and see how it goes.

  • FCE and Canon Files

I have a six month old Canon Vixia HF R100 and latest Final Cut Express on the latest 21 inch iMac.
When I try to import video I can see in the preview window, using log and capture, the import icon spins for a few seconds and turns into a red exclamation point. From what I have been reading FCE does not support .mts files (known as AVCHD "lite"?) that the Canon shoots.
Is this correct and is there a reasonable workaround? The Canon box doesn't refer to the AVCHD as being "lite". Thanks for comments.

Sadly, the Canon camcorders often use a Canon-specific implementation of H.264 (MPEG4-AVC / H.264).  It is not AVCHD or AVCHD-Lite but instead is a subset of the H.264 specification that they chose to implement.
As David indicated in his earlier post, try using either MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap to convert your video files to QuickTime/Apple Intermediate Codec.  (You will not need the QT MPEG2 Component because your camera does not record to MPEG2, it records to MPEG4-AVC / H.264.)  In FCE you will then use File > Import  > Files to bring them into FCE.

  • Capturing Canon hx-a1 HDV to FCP

I can not get the camera to stay in playback HDV mode in signal setup. When I put in the firewire cable it goes back to playback STD and is grey. So when I try to capture the footage to FCP it says it is not getting any data. All settings seem
OK. Any explanation or solution out there?

Yes, there is a codec issue with footage shot on Canon camcorders and rendered with Sony or Panasonic equipment. If you can use the XH A1 for capturing it might solve the problem. I have a XH A1 and was warned by Apple NOT to shoot in 24F unless I was transferring to film as it could require the extension/compression of some frames when editing in FCP. Not sure why, but that's an issue I can do without.
    Good luck,

  • Will the Canon Vixia HF M40 Allow Me To Directly Import to iMovie?

I've been reading lots of conflicting things online as to whether or not I can import video directly to iMovie with the Canon Vixia HF M40.  I don't want to have to do all the conversion stuff...I just want something easy.  I found this clip on YouTube http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ky9Pac_-sHY (I know it's a different Canon model) that makes uploading look really easy.  He also says in the video that all Canon camcorders work like this with iMovie.  Can this be true?
Other info:  I have a MacBook Pro that I bought in 2010 and I have iMovie 09.  I don't mind upgrading to iMovie 11 if I have to.
    Thanks!

    Did you figure it out?
I just ordered the HFM40 (they have a manufacturer rebate on the M4XXX maeras rightnow $250.00-$300) I'm thinking returning it and getting the M41 but anyway; Did you get it to work?
