Canon .cr2 files

I have a Canon Powershot G16 that shoots RAW images but puts them in a .CR2 format.  I am trying to determine if Aperture definitely will read this type of file or not. Can anyone tell me if it will? Thanks.

The raw format of the Canon Powershot G16 is on the list of supported cameras, see:  http://www.apple.com/aperture/specs/raw.html, but with the footnote
*** Requires Aperture 3.4 or later.
You will have to upgrade your MacOS X version to at least MacOS X (10.7.5), to be able to run Aperture 3.4,  and to MacOS X 10.9.2 , to be able to buy the latest Aperture 3.5.1 from the AppStore.

  • Opening Canon CR2 files in CS3 on a Mac

What Camera Raw plug-in do I need to open Canon CR2 files in Photoshop CS3 on a Mac?
-Please send download link and installation instructions.
    Thanks

    Martha,
You have not provided any information about how you updated to ACR 4.3 or details about your setup, whether you have purged the Cache through the Tools menu in Bridge, trashed Photoshop and/or preferences, Repaired Permissions, or performed any other maintenance, nor what error message you get or what happens when you try opening your images, nor any information as to the exact version of Photoshop you are running (10.0.1?) as well as the OS (14.0.11 or 10.5.7?).  You really need to post in the Camera Raw forum so that you can browse existing threads and so we can point you to relevant posts.
Provided the files themselves are not damaged or corrupted, the most common problems are installing the ACR plug-in in the wrong place and not removing the obsolete ACR plug-in that is originally installed by default with Photoshop.
If you go to the Photoshop menu > About Plug-in > Camera Raw…, you should see only one instance of Camera Raw and it should be 4.6 when you select that menu item.
If you have any other question, please post in the Camera Raw forum, not here.  A discussion of this nature should be over there, where it can benefit other Camera Raw users, not just you.

  • DNG Converter no longer converts focusing points from Canon CR2 files

    Hi all,
Up until some time between July 2010 and September 2010, the focusing points embedded in the original Canon CR2 files were also converted and containded in the DNG-file. Hence up until this point in time the focusing points were shown in Apple's Aperture. Since September 2010 this is no longer the case.
I had hoped for the DNG Converter 6.7 Beta to have corrected this truncation of the files.
I am using af Canon EOS 1D Mark III. I am running OS X Lion 10.7.3
    1. Has anybody else experienced the same change in behavor of the DNG Converter?
    2. Can anybody still see the focus points in Aperture or equal Imaging program?
    3. Does anybody have an idea, how to contact Adobe for such a feature request?
Thank you in advance for your help.
    Kind regards,
    Allan

    Hi MadManChan2000,
Thank you for your answer. So what you are saying is that for some reason Apple's Aperture is no longer reading these MarkerNote metadata correctly?
    Kind regards,
    Allan

  • Adobe Bridge Corrupts Canon CR2 files

Viewing Canon CR2 RAW files from a Canon EOS 7D or Canon EOS 40D camera will corrupt some images. After Adobe Bridge creates a
thumbnail of the CR2 files, some images previews will show the file with corruption (large white square or discolored areas). The CR2 file then
becomes corrupt. The file is not corrupt prior to viewing in bridge, but it becomes corrupt after viewing in bridge. The file is corrupt because it can
no longer be processed with any other RAW conversion program including ACR, DPP, or BreezeBrowser. If the file is marked as read only before viewing in bridge, the image preview shows corrupt in Bridge but the file remains intact and can be processed with Canon's DPP software. This issue first occured with CS4 and the ACR 5.5 update. The problem seemed to be less prevalent with the ACR 5.7 update. However after upgrading to CS5 this problem is back and worse than ever.
When doing a detailed file compare between a corrupted version of a CR2 file and  a copy of the same file before the corruption occurs it appears as if metadata has been written to the wrong part of the file (middle) instead of the beginning (header).
    Operating System: Windows 7

I am trying to fix this problem as well.
    In my case, I've got Windows 7 (32-bit), CS5, and a Canon 50D.
I've got photos that I can view perfectly in Canon's Digital Photo Professional, but the SAME photo in the SAME directory opens corrupted in Bridge.
    Here's an interesting wrinkle:
    Scenarios:
(fyi - all my CR2 images are pulled off the CF card using Bridge's loader)
CR2 Image opened in Canon's Digital Photo Professional:  Opens Fine.
CR2 Image opened in Photoshop directly (skipping Bridge):  Opens Fine.  (opens in Camera Raw first, of course, but still Fine)
CR2 Image 'browsed to' in Bridge:  Corrupted pinky/yellow/white.
CR2 Image double-clicked in Bridge, opens in Camera Raw:  Corrupted pinky/yellow/white.
    Bridge closed.
CR2 image opened in Photoshop directly again.  Pay attention... opens 1st in Camera Raw: Corrupted, but for only five seconds! It refreshes on its own and now is Fine!  Click Open Image into Photoshop and it Opens Fine again.
It's clear to me Bridge/Adobe something is corrupting these images.
It seems sometimes that the corruption becomes permanent, and even Canon's Digital Photo Professional shows a corrupted image.  In the scenarios and order mentioned above, the CR2 file remains openable fine in Digital Photo Professional.  So, why other images I have cannot open well in Digital Photo Professional, I do not know -- perhaps the order I clicked things caused Bridge to update the CR2 file?
I'm in the process of updating all CS5 software to the latest, in case I'm missing some updates.  If anything improves as a result, I'll update here.

  • Can't open Canon Cr2 file in Photoshop CS6

I purscahed PShop CS6 Upgrade a few days ago as an upgrade for the full CS4 Extended (which was upgraded to CS5 last year).  I installed CS6 as an upgrade to the installed and registered CS5.
Neither Bridge CS6 nor Photoshop CS6 will read Canon Cr2 raw files, and the "About Photoshop" splash screen indicates my purchased CS6 is a Beta version.
What has gone wrong?  Should I uninstall CS5 and CS6, reinstall CS4 and then apply the CS6 upgrade to CS4?
    Thanks
    Ken Lilley

    Hi Chris
Thanks for the reply.  My reply is a bit delayed from time zones - I
live in Australia & had to go out to do some work.
My CS6 upgrade was bought from the Adobe Store Australia on May 10.
    Order number is:  AD003318323AU
The downloadsI got on May 10 seemed to cause the problem.  I had trouble
with the Akamai option but used a second option to get CS6 in 2 files -
the small exe and the big zipped file.  The small exe wouldn't unzip the
main file so I unzipped it manually and installed from that, and somehow
or other I finished up with the beta version.  I'd never installed the
beta version before this, but the "About Photoshop" splash screen made
it obvious that I had it then.
When I got home a while ago I ran the Adobe download process again and
this time it worked, and file sizes and date last modified etc were
different in today's download.  I deactivated the first CS6, uninstalled
it, ran Adobe Creative Suite Cleanser Tool and reinstalled from todays
downloaded files.  My new CS6 is the correct & current version.
Adobe will probably have another confused customer somewhere who did
what I did at about the same time and got the beta version instead of
    the real program.
    The CR2 files I couldn't open were from a Canon G1X.  My Canon 5D Mk2
    files opened properly.
    Thanks again

  • CS5 Ext and Bridge 6.3 are now corrupting my Canon cr2 files. Any suggestions?

    Morning All,
My machine has just started corrupting some of my cr2 files. I bring them back from the card as well as from my backups and all of a sudden all of the versions are corrupt. I can open them in IrfanView no problem. I can open them in DPP by Canon no problem. Just Bridge does this. I have installed all of the latest updates for all Adobe products. The thumbnail is corrupted with white/pinkish squares as well as the preview pane being corrupted. However, I have just noticed that I am able to open the file in Camera Raw 6.3 and it shows corruption for several seconds and then shows the uncorrupted Raw. I can make changes etc and save them by pressing done. I then see the thumbnail and it's still corrupted. Purging the cache doesn't seem to make a difference.
I'm confident that the various versions of the cr2 files are not damaged.
My system details are posted below
Windows: Microsoft Windows 7 Ultimate, 64Bit
    Memory (RAM): 12280 MB
Motherboard: ASUSTeK Computer INC. P6T SE
    CPU Info: Intel Core i7 CPU 920  @ 2.67GHz
Display Adapters: NVIDIA GeForce GTX 260
    Monitors: 2x; NEC MultiSync LCD2690WUXi2 1920 x 1200 32 bit, ViewSonic VA2213w SERIES 1920 x 1080 32 bit
    Hard Disks:
C: 128GB A-Ram Pro Series SSD for Programs
    D: 4 x 1 Gb Samsung HDs in Raid 1 + 0  1863.0GB size for Data
O: 59.6GB A-Ram Pro Series SSD for Win7 and Adobe Swapfiles
The files were perfect earlier today, It's just now that they seem to be corrupting and the more I look at them the more of them corrupt. I have deleted and rebuilt the cache. I use xmp files. I've deleted them as well to no effect. I am checking the file system and may be wrong but I don't think this is a file system problem.
All MS updates have been applied as well.
    Cheers

    G'day Curt,
I smacked myself on the forehead when I read your reply. How could I have forgotten to do that? However, after trying that, the problem persists and more files are corrupting. I now have around ten files of around 200 in a party folder I have that have corrupted. They all were perfect several days ago.
I'm starting to get worried as I work for the local rag and have social pics this weekend to process. I can't afford to let this happen to them.
    Thanks for the suggestion....

  • I can't open canon .CR2 files in Adope camera raw in CS3

When i want to open my .CR2 file from my Canon camera 40D into bridge or photoshop CS3 it does not open it and it can't recognize the file in some way.  My computer is working with windows vista.  I really need help as i dont know why it is not doing it.  Thanks

Distilling the Tech Note down, essentially you can't open .CR2 files in CS3.  I think CS4 is the first version that has .CR2 compatibility.  One option that doesn't involve upgrading to CS4 is to download the free Adobe DNG converter and convert your .CR2 files to .dng.  Then you can open them in CS3.
No, that isn't right.  The Canon 40D was supported in at least the last version of Camera Raw for CS3.  There are a few things you need to verify.
    1.  In Photoshop, go to Help/About Plug-Ins and click on Camera Raw in the list.  It will tell you what version you have installed.  You should have Camera Raw 4.6 listed, and it should only be listed once.  If there are additional listings then you have a problem.  Camera Raw will now work.
    2.  Get the download instructions from the Adobe download website and make sure Camera Raw is installed in the right folder.  It must be that specific folder, and there can be no other versions of Camera Raw in the Adobe file structure.
    3.  Are you able to see your raw images in Bridge?  If not, then there is something wrong with your installation.
Check these things out and make sure everything is set up properly.  Then maybe we can help you further.

  • Unable to convert my canon cr2 files to DNG

I cannot convert my caonon 1200d cr2 files for DNG on my vista machine as the latest version of adobe raw convertor will not run on my vista machine/..@

Your CR2 files require Adobe Camera Raw 8.4 or higher and as you have discovered ACR8.4 is not compatible with older operating systems.
ACR8.3 was the final update to raw support for Windows XP, Windows Vista or Mac OSX 10.6.
You should have a copy of Canon DPP with your EOS utility disks. You will need to install and use that, until you get a new computer. You can convert CR2 into tiff or go straight to jpeg, using DPP.

  • Converting Canon .CR2 files to .dng

I have what appears to be the latest version of the Adobe DNG Converter (8.6.0.254); but when I direct it to a folder containing .CR2 files from my Canon PowerShot G7X camera, it tells me "No items match your search" and does no conversion. How can I convert this type of RAW file to .DNG?

I don't understand your question. Here is what I do in the Digital Negative Converter:
    - Step 1 is "Select the images to convert"; I click on "Select folder" and navigate to the folder containing a .CR2 file
    - in that window, I see "No items match your search." even though it contains a .CR2 file from my Canon camera. Whether I then click on Select or Cancel makes no difference, since the program does not recognize any files.
    - If despite that, I click on Convert, I receive an error message "The source folder does not contain any supported camera raw files."
In other words, .CR2 raw files are not being recognized by the latest released production version of the converter.

  • Canon cr2 files not recognised in LR4.1

I have Lightroom 4.1 running on a MacBook Air with 10.8.1 OS
It is not recognising the files from my Canon 7D with v 2.00 firmware
The files are recognised however in Bridge v 6
    Any solutions?

What is your general work flow? Are you pulling the files directly from the camera? I was having an issue with my new 7D last night where Lightroom insists that it doesn't know what to do with the cr2 files when I was attempting to import them from the camera (Something it happily does with my T3 and has for ages)
However, if I manually dragged the RAW files to their holding directory on the drive myself, and then imported them to Lightroom, everything was just fine.

  • Unable to open Canon CR2 files after installing Camera Raw 7.3

I have photoshop elements 8 and have used raw files from my canon 450D for several years.  Just upgraded to Photoshop Elements 11 and it doesn't recognise the .CR2 files o, as far as I can tell any other type of Raw file.  This despite loading Camera Raw 7.3?
    Can anyone help?

    Now then ssprengel
I think we are getting somewhere.
I have not had a chance to look at the other logs you suggest yet.  But...........
I made sure the old Camera Raw.8bi file was remnamed with a totally fictitious extension so that the new file from the linkk you sent could not be mistaken..........but no joy.
I then copied the Camera Raw.8bi file from the Elements 8 equivalent folder, this is onlly circaa 11Mb instead of circa 20Mb, and..........
..........whoa and behold  ............  I can read all my .CR2 files through PSE11 and also PSE* still works!
    You are a star!
I don't know what other functionality is missing.  Maybe there is some.  I shall have to investigate.
Maybe the latest plugin only works on x64 systems?
So next steps are for me to a) review the other logs you suggest, b) try downloading the equivalent files from PSE9 and PSE10 and see if they work, c) ask Adobe why this has happened.
    Many thanks

  • Canon CR2 files in Photoshop CS4

    Hi Everyone,
    I need a bit of help.  I have a G5 Dual 2.7 Power PC.
I also have photoshop CS4.  I cannot see Canon files from a Canon 5D Mark 2 camera
in photoshop unless I convert them to DNGs.  I have an older computer, same type but its
not water cooled and I can see CR2 files in photoshop there.  I had to kill photoshop on that
computer to put it on this one.  Ive tried to find the update to correct this but I keep getting an
alert saying I need some kind of  Manager first.  When I download that I get an alert saying the
architecture doesnt support it.  So Im back to ground zero.  I can do the DNG conversions but
Im just wondering why it works on an older computer but not this one.  Does anyone have an
idea of what I am doing wrong?  Or does anyone have the link to the correction.
    thanks
    tony

Yes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4.  I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.

  • Problem Converting Canon CR2 Files to DNG

I am currently on holiday, shooting photos with my Canon 70D in raw (CR2), and I have my Macbook Air with me, with Lightroom 5.4 installed on it.  After each day's shooting, I have been putting the flash card from the camera into the laptop, and downloading the photos using Lightroom, converting the CR2 files to DNG in the process.  This was working fine until a couple of days ago when suddenly, Lightroom has decided that it can no longer do the conversion.  It displays the photos on the card, it allows me to choose the ones I want to download, and then it tells me that it cannot convert/download them because it cannot read the files.  Well, if it cannot read the files, how can it display them so that I can make my choices?  And why, after working successfully for weeks, am I suddenly getting this error message ... nothing has changed in my hardware or software in either the camera or computer.  Any and all help would be most appreciated.  Thank you!!

Thanks very much for the answer, but I'm afraid it is not very enlightening ... at least to someone like me.  I do not understand where I would look for a write permission issue ... especially since nothing has changed (as far as I know).  Can you give me any further help?  Thanks!
