Canon CR2 RAW import issue

I just got a Canon 7D and I shoot in RAW, which with this model is CR2. I can see the pics fine in finder and I can open them in Photoshop CS4, but not in iPhoto. I use iPhoto to organize all of my pictures and would love to keep it that way.
Is iPhoto 8.1 incapable of recognizing the CR2 format?
Gracias

Hi TD,
sorry for late reply - I was out a couple of days. My latest version of Digital Camera Raw update is 2.6. Even on the apple downloads page (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/applicationupdates/indexabc3.html) I don't see a 2.7 version nor would auto-update propose a missing update. Am I missing something here?
Yes, I am importing directly from my camera using USB cable via USB hub.

  • Canon 400D RAW import issue

I have recently upgraded to Vista and Lightroom 3.1 and now I am having a problem importing RAW files directly from my canon 400D. I have set the auto importer to recognize a memory card, and lightroom starts when I activate my camera, but for some reason it tells me that there are no files to import. This is the same if I manually select my 400D's CF folder. I can see the files in windows explorer, but Lightroom will no longer recognize them.
Adobe Photo downloader lightroom 3.0 is running and I have no problem importing Photos once I have copied the files from the CF card to a hard drive manually, but it really is a pain not to be able so select individual RAW files or batches through lightroom. I do not have a memory card reader!
All of these processes were functioning with Lightroom 2.0.
Anyone know of a fix or a workaround?

Hahaha, yeah, you are right, I was writing the last post in a rush before leaving the house......I do indeed mean 1.2 an 1.3...and as stated I do not have a card reader, and to be honest I really dont think I should have to purchase another piece of hardware (no matter how cheap) to have this software run correctly.
Thank you for your reply, but I am still looking for a fix or workaround to download directly from the camera. This is something that I have had work before. Are Adobe aware of this, is there any fix planned?

Anyone know why cant I import Canon CR2 RAW pic into iPhoto???

Although all Canon RAW files are are suffixed CR2, they are not all the same. In fact, each model of Camera produces a different RAW. What camera do you have? Is it in the Supported List?

  • Canon CR2 to DNG issue. DNG files too big!

I'm experiencing what I believe may be a few issues whilst converting from Canon CR2 RAW files to the Adobe DNG format.
    (Camera is Canon 5D Mk2)
For example, I have a folder containing CR2 RAW files which size = approx' 410MB. But when I perform the DNG conversion to a new folder, the total file size of that folder containing the converted DNG images is over 800MB! Does this sound correct?
I thought converting to DNG reduced the overall file size of the RAW image somewhat?
For info, I'm using the latest version of the converter with no JPEG preview or embedded original RAW file selected.
    THANKS

When converting to DNG, is "Embed original Raw File" selected?
If it is, it will double the size of the DNG file.
I have not seen any reason to select this option, and the only time that I have seen reference to it (in Better Digital Camera, I think), it was suggested that this option be turned off.

  • Displayed white balance differs from camera value (Canon .CR2 raw)

I've noticed that Lightroom will often display a sequence or group of pictures with a very visibly different white balance between consecutive frames.
Looking at the EXIF info in a sample Canon .CR2 raw (EOS-350D), the recorded colour temperature is 5200K (camera set for AWB), but Lightroom reports this as 4950K after import. For the next frame (continuous shot), the EXIF colour temperature is again 5200K, but Lightroom reports 4900K.
This still happens in LR1.2 (on newly imported photos).
Why does Lightroom appear to make its own decision for white balance rather than use the recorded value?
    Thanks,
    Barrie

In any case, I'm worried about the discrepancy
between Aperture and Camera Raw on something so
    basic.
Sorry I can't help you directly with Aperture as I haven't bought it - yet. However, re-the above quote, I'd just mention that the interpretation of colour temperature values is not quite as simple as it might seem. Even more so when you bear in mind that RAW converters from 3rd parties like Adobe or Apple are not based on the RAW conversion engine produced by the camera manufacturer - in effect they have to guess/estimate what the temp/tint values in the RAW file actually mean...
Some time back I made a series of tests using 3 Canon cameras, with ACR, Capture One & the Canon RAW converter. Each produced noticeably different results, and C1 & ACR showed quite different temp/tint values. (The Canon software only showed 'As Shot' - no values). The differences were consistent between shots from each camera (using WB values input or AWB) - but they weren't consistent from one camera to another. Which program produced the best result depended very much on the Camera/Subject/Personal taste...
Hope someone can help with Aperture specific info, I'm sure there must be a way of making camera specific adjustments to the RAW conversions...

  • Some Canon CR2 RAW Files Will Not Open In Elements 8

I use a Canon 7D DSLR.  Up until 30 minutes ago I never had a problem opening Canon CR2 RAW files in Photoshop Elements 8.
Some files still open others do not.  I can think of only one thing.  I was shooting a large number of frames and reduced the RAW Image size down from RAW Large Only to RAW Medium with Small Jpeg to give me more room on the Compact Flash Card.
The Large RAW only CR2 files open fine in PSE 8, the Jpegs open fine, but the smaller sized CR2 files will not open and I get a wrong file type message in PSE8.
Any ideas why this would happen?  I suspect it is a function of the camera setting, but all RAW files download as CR2 files.
I appreciate any guidance in this matter.  Needless to say I am resetting my camera back to Large RAW files only.
    Alex

ACR 5.x only supported full-sized 7D RAWs, but ACR 6.x supports 7D mRAW and sRAW, so just update to the latest version of the plugin, following the PSE-specific instructions:
    http://www.adobe.com/downloads/updates/
sRAW and mRAW files are not RAWs because the camera has already demosaicked them to RGB and encoded them as lossless JPG.
Here is technical information on the reduce-sized RAWs:

  • After Effects CS6: Canon .CR2 RAW files not recognized as acceptable files for import?

    HI Folks,
I'm trying to import as I've seen on tutorials, my RAW files from my Canon 5D3  .CR2 files.  I can open them in PS and LR5….and I'd seen examples of folks opening them with AE CS6 standalone, but it doesn't seem to recognize mine.
Any thoughts? Is there something I need to update, or flag or change?
    I'm on a mac, OSX 10.7.5
    AE verson: 11.0.4.2
This is what my import screen looks like:
    Thanks in advance,

I read through those linked pages, but they didn't give me any solution.
After nosing around through a LOT of sites on Adobe's site (why aren't pages dated, took forever to find the most up to date or pertinent pages)…I found this one that was slightly related, but worked for me.
    http://helpx.adobe.com/bridge/kb/acr-84-bridge-cs6-metadata.html
I had to download this zip, and manually place the plugin as directed, and now, After Effects CS6 will recognize my CR2 raw files from my canon 5D3.
Thank you for the help, it led me in the right direction, but the link above was the actual solution I found that worked!!

  • Can't upgrade Photoshop Elements 9.0 to ANYTHING: unable to open Canon CR2 Raw files

I will start this post w/ the comment that I am completely fed-up with Adobe, and am not surprised at the troubles its having considering how completely **** it's ancillary services on its products are. Outside of the actual editing capabilities of their software (the only reason I and most people use their software) they have bungled UI, design, updates, and product support.
    On to my issue.
I have a Mac, I have OSX 10.9.4 installed, I also own a copy of Photoshop elements. I recently wiped and reinstalled my OS, and thus reinstalled Photoshop Elements 9.0.
It doesn't support Canon .cr2 files, Canon Raw image files. I have wasted nearly 2 hours running in circles, and registering for every ******* stupid adobe mailing list, and cloud product, forum ID, that exists, all at adobes insistence without getting any sort of answer.
    1. There is no update function. The menu item HELP>UPDATE ... DOES NOT EXIST, every update must be done manually.
    2. I can't download and install any of the most recent Camera RAW plugins because they require the most update version of PSE9.0.
    3. I manually downloaded both update 9.0.2 and 9.0.3 and was required to download two additional pieces of Adobe software, which at best are useless, and at worst are malware the cloud services OSX plugin, and the Adobe App and Install Manager.
    4. When I run either update patch, I get the error message "This update is not applicable for you" and then information to contact customer support, which then circuitously and deviously reroutes me through a series of stupid questions.
    5. Ultimately I came here and have searched the forums and don't have an answer to my question yet.
    Questions.
    1. Why can't I install updates 9.0.2 or 9.0.3 to my PSE 9.0 for Mac OSX
    2. I don't give a f#*K about the updates, I just want to open canon RAW CR2 files.
I wish someone else produced even moderately decent photo editing software, I'd rid myself of adobe.

The raw files from the 5D should open OK but the files from the EOS-M require PSE11 or PSE12. Alternatively, download and install the free Adobe DNG converter to convert your raw files from the EOS-M to the Adobe universal Raw format and the files will open in all versions of PSE (keep your originals as backups and for use in the camera manufactures software)
Windows download (.exe file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
Mac download (.dmg file) click here DNG Converter 8.6
You can convert a whole folder of raw images in one click. See this quick video tutorial:

  • Canon CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop CS4

I'm using a Canon EOS 600D (aka EOS Kiss X5), Photoshop CS4 (ver 11.0.1) with Camera Raw 5.7.0.213.
CR2 Raw files won't open in Photoshop, though the thumbnails are clearly visible and open in Windows Explorer.
    Any suggestions?
    Thanks

Yes, absolutely all of the quality and dynamic range is retained in the DNG, because it is still raw data.
Outside of upgrading to Photoshop CS5, which can open your files directly with Camera Raw 6.4.1, your only choice is the extra step of converting the .CR2 files to .DNG with the free DNG converter.
While you'll get all the quality your Camera Raw 5.x converter can deliver, you should keep in mind the Camera Raw 6.x converter has an entirely new, additional "2010 process" for converting raw images, which (depending on your settings) can actually deliver a higher quality conversion than the one you're getting with Photoshop CS4.  I think it's worth the cost of the Photoshop upgrade, personally.

  • Canon CR2 RAW files

I just bought a Canon T3i and want MODERATELY PRICED software to handle the CR2 RAW files from it.  My now VERY OLD Photoshop 6 will not.  Problem: I do NOT want to upgrade from Windows XP at this time.  Lightroom 4 runs under Vista or Windows 7, but not XP.  Will Lightroom 3 handle these files?

    Thank you SO VERY MUCH!

  • Opening canon cr2 raw in elements 10

i have tried opening canon cr2 files from canon 650d in elements 10 but no luck why? only way was DNG converter.
    mike hawthorne

Since pse 10 can only use up to camera raw 6.7 and the canon 650d requires at least camera raw 7.1
that is why you need to use the dng converter.
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
    Camera Raw-compatible Adobe applications
Newer photoshop elements versions pse 11, 12 and 13 can open those files without the need to convert them using the dng converter.

When previewing fro CF card into Adobe Bridge Canon .CR2 files get corrupted to .sr2 and show 0 bytes !! Trying to rename does nothing! This has happened before and only with Bridge!! Help!!!

Thanks for the tip Ellir. I downloaded 5.4RC last night and it didn't have support (tested) and today official 5.4 gets released with the support. I feel lucky

Anyways SX1 problem solved, tested and it works. Thank you Adobe.

  • Adobe Camera RAW (All Versions) Import Canon .CR2 / RAW images with an orange / green color cast.

All versions of Adobe Camera RAW including the latest 7.3 import .CR2 images with a greenish / orange color cast.
Tested on 7D, and 5D III
Makes Hardwood floors, and flesh tones look abysmal.
Canon's Digital Photo Professional renders the colors fine, as does ACDSee 5.0 Pro (when viewing)  Exporting from ACDSee however is another story as things look even worse than Adobe.  DPP can export perfectly.
Changes to Color Gammut / Space have little or no effect.

    Good day!
You might want to post on the dedicated Camera Raw Forum.

  • How can I import Canon .CR2 raw files gererated by the new Canon 5D MkIII?

Just got the new Canon 5D MkIII and none of the Adobe products can recognize the raw files (called .CR2) it generates.
I'd be happy just converting them to .DNG but converters won't recognize them either.
Anyone know a solution for me?
    Thanks.

  • Canon S100 RAW color issues

Hello, all. I created a thread with this similar issue a few months ago but never really got it resolved. Instead of reviving an old thread, I decided to just recreate it with updated information.
I have the new Canon S100 and I am having an issue with how the RAW files appear in Lightroom.
I import the photos into a Lightroom catalog and they all look fine within the importer window (which shows essentially what a JPEG would look like), but when I click on the photo in Library or Develop, once the photo finishes loading, the red saturation goes through the roof.
Any photo that already had a little bit of warmth to it exploded with red.
Whereas any photo taken in normal light gains a little more warmth and exposure.
Here are a couple examples of the JPEG preview (also how it looks in-camera) compared with what the RAW looks like once it's been loaded in Lightroom. (The above or left photo is the “normal” version, the bottom/2nd image is the RAW)
It’s sort of difficult to tell with some of the photos by looking at them side-by-side. I also have the individual photos if you want to A/B them to see the changes that are actually occurring.
There are no presets being applied upon import.
The only solution I've found is to convert them all into JPEGs using Canon's software (which does not alter the images as seen above), and edit them in Lightroom as JPEGs, but that completely eliminates the point of buying a camera that is capable of shooting in RAW.
I’ve been having this issue since the S100 first came out (when I purchased it) with Lightroom 3.6RC and was told that it would be fixed in Lightroom 3.6… which it wasn’t… nor was it fixed in Lightroom 4.
I decided to just go ahead and convert all my photos to JPEGs until I found a fix to this so I could at least have my photos (I had photos from my anniversary with my girlfriend in November that I couldn’t do anything with so I was sick of waiting).
I figured I’d wait till more people had the camera, expecting this issue to be more widespread… but now that a lot of people have the S100, I’ve looked around and found no other instances of this happening… so I’m worried it’s something on my end.
I have a 2008 13” MacBook Pro running OSX 10.7.3 and I have the latest version of Lightroom (4.0) and Camera Raw (7.0) installed. I’ve tried the photos in Photoshop CS5 and it does the same thing. When this first happened back in December I tried the photos in Aperture as well and it did the same thing.
The only software that seems to recognize the true color of the photos is Canon’s horrible “professional editing” software.
    Thanks in advance.
    -Patrick

I recently bought an S100 and encountered the same problem. With Camera Standard in Lightroom, Reds are too bright, greens are shifted towards yellow, and some yellows are shifted towards orange.
I have been using Lightroom since the beta, with different cameras from different manufacturers. The camera profiles for the S100 are the worst I have experienced by far. The profiles, particularly all of the profiles that start with "Camera," do not fit this camera. I believe somebody made a mistake. It could have been someone at Canon, it could have been someone at Adobe. I don't expect this mistake to be fixed, or even acknowledged.
Moving on, here is my workaround:
Start with the Powershot S110 Camera Standard profile.
Use dcpTool to decompile the profile.
Open the decompiled profile in a text editor.
At the top, change the name to S110 Standard.
At the bottom, set the baseline exposure offset to zero.
At the bottom, change the model restriction from S110 to S100
Use dcpTool to compile the modified profile. Give the resulting .dcp file a different name than the original.
Put the new .dcp file in the appropriate directory, open Lightroom and apply the S110 Standard profile to your S100 images.
    dcpTool is here:
    http://dcptool.sourceforge.net/Introduction.html
This hacked S110 profile gets rid of the blazing reds. It does have some problems with yellows and greens. I solve this in Lightroom by using +20 in Camera Calibration: Green Primary: Hue. I haven't had my camera very long, and I may end up making other adjustments in Lightroom. But using the Powershot S110 Camera Standard profile seems like the best place to start.
I tried using Adobe's DNG Profile Editor app on the S110 "Camera" profiles, but did not get good results. From what others have posted on Adobe's forums, this is to be expected. A lot of the "Camera" profiles are too complicated for DNG Profile Editor to work well on. Both the S100 and S110 Camera Standard profiles have over 23,000 lines of code when decompiled!
I also tried dcpTool (and DNG Profile Editor) with some of the other S series and G series profiles, without finding anything that works better than the S110 Camera Standard profile.
