Canon Digital Rebel XTi RAW support?

I just purchased a Canon Digital Rebel XTi and cannot get RAW files to import into iPhoto. I even tried the Image Capture trick (downloading to disk and then importing) to no avail. The file format is listed as CR2, which is supposed to be supported. Is it possible that Canon is using a different variant of the CR2 format for this camera and that I'll have to wait for another iPhoto or OS X update?

I'm having the same issue - RAW images (both sRGB and AdobeRGB) from the new Rebel XTi will not open in iPhoto.
It is important to note that the same images will not open in Photoshop CS2, nor with Adobe Bridge 1.0 and even with the updated Bridge 1.0.4.6.
I would hope that Apple will recognize that there is a significant difference in file format from the Rebel XT and the Rebel XTi - and that Apple will issue an update to iPhoto accordingly.
For now, looks like Rebel XTi users will need to limp along on Canon's proprietary (and u-u-ugly) software provided with the XTi.

  • Canon Digital Rebel XT NOW supported!!!!!!

The 10.4.3 update has now updated the system to support the .CR2 raw files that the Digital Rebel XT makes. I notice that I could open them in Preview.app now so I figured I would give iPhoto a try and yup they import just as expected.(Finally!)
Hope everyone that has been waiting for this is happy. I know I am.

As long as the photo in iPhoto has the little RAW under it when I drag it from the library it shows up in photoshop as a raw image.
You might try reverting to original image before you try to drag it out of the library. The problem I have with this is when you are done and save it back iPhoto doesn't seem ti understand that this is an edited photo. So it looks like you will have to re-import the edited image.

  • Nikon D80, Digital Rebel XTi / 400D / Kiss X ... RAW support Here

    Digital Camera RAW Support Update
    PPC : http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawsupportupdateppc.html
    Universal: http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/digitalcamerarawsupportupdateuniversal.ht ml
    " About this update
Mac OS X Tiger provides support for a variety of popular digital camera and image file formats. Applications such as Aperture, iPhoto and Preview utilize this support to work with digital camera RAW files. This update improves RAW file format compatibility for the following digital SLR cameras:
-Canon Digital Rebel XTi / 400D / Kiss X Digital
    -Nikon D80
    -Pentax *ist DS
    Other issues addressed:
-Handling of large Canon RAW files (.CRW)
    -DNG compatibility on Intel-based Macs
-Lines sometimes appearing in images exported from Aperture"
    -Robert

Wow. I just installed the universal version of this update and now my iMac won't boot. How swell... It sits at the white screen.
I can hold down the power button and turn it off and on, but that's it. I've tried booting from CD by holding down C and zapping the PRAM and it still just sits at that white screen. I've unplugged it and am going to leave it for about 15 minutes and see if that does it.
Has anyone else had this problem?

  • RAW Images from Canon Digital Rebel XT

Does (or will) iPhoto 5 support the RAW files from the Canon Digital Rebel XT?

    Hi David,
I have a Canon 20D which is supported in RAW mode.
The following dpreview report outlines the CD software download Canon Zoombrowser EX:
    http://www.dpreview.com/reviews/canoneos350d/page16.asp
It has a RAW image task which comes as a plug-in with the supplied software.
If the RAW can only be manipulated in the Canon software, a JPEG copy could be saved to iphoto.
I do agree a specific standard would be very helpful.
    Best wishes,
    Scott

  • Best RAW Image Processing for Canon Digital Rebel XT - PS Elements 6??

I'm new to RAW image processing and image editing. I just bought a Canon digital Rebel XT. It comes with Canon Digital Professional 2.1 software. I also have Aperture upgraded to 1.5.6, which I have tried on JPEGs from an earlier digital camera that only gave me JPEG files. Since Aperture doesn't give me as much editing diversity, I purchased the newly released Photoshop Elements 6 (and I don't have any experience with Photoshop). Thus, I now have 3 different RAW image processors. Does anyone have some experience with these 3 to suggest which one is best? The learning curve looks pretty steep, and it would be helpful to know which of these to focus on, at least initially.
Thanks in advance for the help!

Now that you have the Canon DPP installed i would update it to version 3.2 which is at Canons site.
Now, DPP has the best conversion quality for Canon RAW files. I used it a lot and although limited in what adjustments you have, it offers the essential adjustments and I liked it a lot.
Aperture also does a great job with Canon RAW files, but version 2.1 is even better
Photoshop Elements 6 I have not used but I do use Photoshop CS3
Personally for RAW I prefer Canon DPP over Adobe Camera Raw
And I prefer Aperture over Adobe Camera RAW too.
Now that Aperture has improved it's RAW conversion immensely and it offers tethered shooting with the XT, I am using Aperture exclusively to process RAW files.
An application like Elements or Photoshop CS3 are great if you want to do more advanced layered work and layer blending effects, however, for sepia , black/white, general image color & saturation or desaturated effects and good RAW conversion? I am all about using Aperture.
Now although I use it on a MBP, I will only do edit and color judging when attached to a cinema display or any good LCD with a DVI connection to the laptop.
But in conclusion, for RAW adjustments may as well focus on Aperture and use Elements for the few edits that Aperture does not allow.

  • Windows 7 64-bit driver for Canon Digital Rebel XT

How do I interface my Canon Digital Rebel XT with a computer running Windows 7 64-bit?

You are correct.  Canon does not provide a driver for Windows 7 64-bit.  You have to change the communication mode in your camera and then use Windows Photo Gallery or other software to transfer the photos.  Here is the response that I received from Canon tech support (it works):
"To connect your camera to a Windows Vista or Windows 7 computer, you'll need to change the communication mode.
To set your camera up for this, please do the following:
With the camera disconnected from the computer, turn the camera on.  Press the "Menu" button.  Now select the [Wrench, Hammer, 2] tab.  Scroll down to "Communication" and press the "Set" button.
Select the [Print/PTP] and press "Set".  This process is more completely described (and illustrated too!) on page 121 of your Digital Rebel XT Instruction Manual.
Now connect your camera to your computer and turn the camera on.  Your computer should now recognize and have access to your Digital Rebel XT.
Unfortunately, Canon software cannot communicate with the Rebel XT when operating in this mode.
You may download your pictures using Windows Photo Gallery, or you may use a card reader to download images.  If you haven't already done so, you may retrieve and install this program from Microsoft's download.live.com."

I HAVE A CANON DIGITAL REBEL EOS 300D CAMERA. THE CF CARD WAS PUT IN THE CARD SLOT INCORRECTLY AND THE CARD SLOT WAS DAMANAGED. CAN THIS BE REPAIRED. AND HOW MUCH.

    Hi Ronald,
I'm sorry to hear that the pins in the memory card compartment of your Digital Rebel have been bent.
Because the service life for this camera has expired, Canon no longer offers service for it.  I'm sorry for the difficulty this causes.

  • Camera Connector+Canon Digital Rebel XT or SanDisk's reader

Does anyone know if Apple's iPod Camera Connector work with Canon Digital Rebel XT camera or with SanDisk's ImageMate CF Reader?

I have a answer for all of you regarding this question.....
I decided to give a risk and buy that connector and check it out by myself. Well, it doesn't work with SanDisk ImageMate CF Reader, BUT it WORKS with Canon Digital Rebel XT ! All you have to do is change in your menu option from PC to Print. I bought 5G iPod and everything works fine. That only big minus, it's slooooow. Downloading photos to you iPod is just super slooow.

  • Photoshop CS Plugin for Canon Digital Rebel XT

I'm trying to access RAW files on my digital Rebel XT through Photoshop CS. I can't seem to find the right version of plugin. I tried 2.4 but it doesn't look like it supports Digital Rebel XT. Can anyone point me in the right direction?

The DNG converter is a stand-alone program that does not rely on Photoshop or any other program to do its thing. It comes packaged with the Camera Raw plug-in, and is updated whenever Camera Raw is updated. Using the converter is very simple:
    1. Extract the DNG converter from the zip file and place it wherever you want. The desktop is a good choice.
    2. Locate a folder containing raw images. This can be a folder on your hard drive or a card from the camera.
    3. Drag the folder containing the raw images and drop the folder onto the DNG converter icon.
    4. The DNG converter will start. Choose a destination for your DNG files. Then click on the OK button.
When the DNG converter is finished, just close it and then open Bridge and locate the folder where you told the DNG converter to put your DNG images.

  • Aperture stripping 8 pixels from Canon Digital Rebel CRW files?

    hi,
I just wanted to see if anyone else was having the issue I am. I'm using Aperture with CRW files from a Digital Rebel, which are 3072x2048 in resolution. However, upon import into Aperture, images are listed as 3072x2040 in resolution. Exporting JPGs confirms that the images are only 2040 pixels in height. Converting the same RAW files in Photoshop results in images that are 2048 pixels in height.
What happened to those 8 pixels? It is kind of a pain because the 3072x2040 files are now not exactly a 3:2 aspect ratio...

yeah, I recognize that it's a very small "loss" of information, but it's just a little bit annoying because of the loss of the 3:2 aspect ratio. I just sent some of the 2040 images out for printing so hopefully there won't be an issue there.
I noticed that the crop tool, when you tell it to use a 3:2 aspect ratio, will generate crops that aren't exactly 3:2 pixel-wise. Again, it's very close, but I just feel like there's no reason why it shouldn't be exact.
Thanks for everyone's help! I guess I should start thinking about this as more of a "feature" than anything else...

  • I am having trouble importing jpegs shot on my Canon EOS Digital Rebel XTi

I have about 1000 jpegs that i need to import into FCP. A few specs to start off with. I am working on FCP 7.0 and a brand new MacBook Pro. I have had this camera for about 4 years and have not had a problem importing the jpegs into my old laptop and old FCP program.
When i try to import the jpegs, the 2 portrait jpegs will import fine, but the 350 landscape jpegs will not. I keep getting the "file unknown" error. The dimensions are exactly the same, just reversed. it is RGB. i am able to open the file in preview and resave and then it will import fine. But, i have 1000 photos and don't want to have to do that for all of them. Plus, i will be taking several thousands more and won't have time to do that to each and every photo.
How to i solve this problem so I can simply import the landscape jpegs as i have always done?
Thanks in advance for all of the help.

Will I have to do that for every picture? I am able to open them in Preview and resave them and they work fine. Is there a camera setting that I need to use to dictate how the pix are imported?
    Thanks for your help!

  • Photoshop Elements 6.0 locks up deleting pictures from my Canon Digital Rebel XSI

I'm a long time user of Photoshop Elements and have never had one issue with it.  I just got a Canon Rebel XSi and when I connect it to my PC, PE offers to download the pictures.  That works fine.  The pictures come into PE.  Then it offers to delete the pictures from the camera and this is where the trouble begins. I click "Okay" to begin deleting and then the little dialogue box never goes away and the program just stays hung up.
HELP!  What is wrong?  Why is this locking up?

It's really not a good idea to let elements delete the photos in any case. Your camera has its own directory structure that the computer doesn't fully understand. It's preferable to just reformat your card in the camera or delete the photos directly in the camera, rather than letting a computer do it for you.

  • STILL no EOS 350D/Rebel XT RAW Support

I can't believe that even after several small iPhoto updates to 5.0.4 and the newly released Pro photo software Apeture today, Apple STILL isn't supporting the EOS 350D RAW format!! C'mon guys, it's not like it's that hard. It's all very well supplying drivers for 3rd party devices with OSX but you have to keep them up to date - very embarassing to be able to connect all sorts of obsolete DSLR models to iPhoto but not one that was released only 6 months ago.

Phil this is not really an option either as the last update to DNG is not supported by iPhoto, so there is no reason to think that this latest version will be immediately supported in Aperture. Right now apple really needs to work with camera makers to get things in order, otherwise this new program will be just like iPhoto and not kept up to date. It is understandable that the latest cameras may not work, but if you are going to offer a pro app then you should atleast try to get camera makers on board so that they can update the decoder to you immediately.

  • IPhoto + Rebel XTi in RAW

Recently I changed my camera to shoot in RAW format because of all the benefits it provides. Now the problem is, I have maybe 110 RAW's in my camera i'd like to load into iPhoto. Whenever I plug my camera into the computer, iPhoto opens and says they're trasnfering but after a few mins it's evident they are not (using the usb cable, I don't have a card reader).
Can iPhoto not read the RAW's i'm trying to transfer? I read somewhere about them having to be in .cr2 format or something.
    Help please, thanks!

    Andrew:
The Canon Digital Rebel XTi is supported by Leopard so that shouldn't be the issue. Try opening Image Capture, located in your Applications folder, and use it to upload the files to a folder on the Desktop first. Then import them into iPhoto from there.
Although you don't have a card reader I recommend you do get one as it's a much safer method of uploading from the camera as it saves wear and tear on the camera's port and battery and avoids possible aborted uploads due to a low battery.
TIP: For insurance against the iPhoto database corruption that many users have experienced I recommend making a backup copy of the Library6.iPhoto (iPhoto.Library for iPhoto 5 and earlier) database file and keep it current. If problems crop up where iPhoto suddenly can't see any photos or thinks there are no photos in the library, replacing the working Library6.iPhoto file with the backup will often get the library back. By keeping it current I mean backup after each import and/or any serious editing or work on books, slideshows, calendars, cards, etc. That insures that if a problem pops up and you do need to replace the database file, you'll retain all those efforts. It doesn't take long to make the backup and it's good insurance.
I've created an Automator workflow application (requires Tiger or later), iPhoto dB File Backup, that will copy the selected Library6.iPhoto file from your iPhoto Library folder to the Pictures folder, replacing any previous version of it. It's compatible with iPhoto 6 and 7 libraries and Tiger and Leopard. Just put the application in the Dock and click on it whenever you want to backup the dB file. iPhoto does not have to be closed to run the application, just idle. You can download it at Toad's Cellar. Be sure to read the Read Me pdf file.
Note: There now an Automator backup application for iPhoto 5 that will work with Tiger or Leopard.
