Canon Elura 100 or Canon ZR600 Camcorders

I'm looking for reviews on either of the camcorders given in the subject line. I'm wanting to know how well or not they work using iMovie. I'm new to this, so I'm a little nervous and not sure how to do all this. I've read reviews online but having looked at a few postings, there are many knowledgeable people here. So I bet some people can help with this dilemma. Thanks for the help.
iMac G5   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

David, I read the review you linked to. Wow, it's almost as detailed as the Canon's User Guide. It seems to me that everything the reviewer says about the Elura 100 is true. It just comes down to a matter of which detractors you can live with.
Cynthia, I asked myself this same question just 2 months ago. Only I had it between the Elura 100 and ZR700, because I need the AV in for converting my old analog Super-8 tapes to digital. I chose the Elura 100 because of the larger CCD. I looked at usa.canon.com and compared the two models, and the Elura seemed like the slightly better camera. The above review seems to corroborate. That review is highly critical of the Elura 100's physical layout. You just have to play with the two cameras in the store to see if this is a problem for you. The biggest layout difference is whether or not you have buttons on the flip-out LCD. The reviewer is critical of the Elura's button layout and complains that you have to look at the buttons to use them. For me, that's no big deal. I figure having all buttons on the back means it's at least possible to use the camera with one hand; if there are functions below the LCD then you HAVE to use your left hand to use those buttons. To me, that means even more distraction when you are taping. The Elura's joystick is tiny, but I haven't had a problem controlling it. This really just comes down to your personal preference and fine motor control. (Arthritis, for example might make the decision for you.)
I haven't used the ZR600, but my guess is it works the same with iMovie as the Elura 100. After you record to a miniDV tape, you just connect the camcorder to your Mac via Firewire. The camera does NOT come with the Firewire cable, so make sure you have one or buy one. In iMovie you click on the camera icon, cue the tape, and click Import. It's that simple. I think all miniDV camcorders with Firewire work the same. Since the Mac has iMovie, the Canon video software is only for PC. (Canon knows not to try to re-invent the wheel.)
The Elura 100, ZR600, and ZR700 can record onto SD card. They use the card for stills or low-res video clips (for email attachments). The Canon software for Mac is for the SD card functions only, where you connect via USB. The larger CCD of the Elura 100 gives a little better resolution on the still pictures. I do not know if the ZR600 has it, but the Elura 100 has a fun feature called "Card Mix." If you install the Canon software you have access to 7 images that you can write onto your SD card (via USB). Select an image to frame your video and activate it while you tape using the D.Effects button. It's very silly. I used one with birthday candles across the bottom of the screen when I taped my son's third birthday party.
So far I have used the Elura 100 to tape my daughter playing outside and my son's birthday party. I couldn't use a tripod at the party because I had to place the camera too close to the scene, so I held it and walked around the action a bit. I am impressed at how steady the footage is compared to my old analog tapes (no image stabilization). It's certainly not Hollywood, but it's less bouncy and jerky than I expected, given how much I was moving around.
I have also used the camera to upgrade my old footage. I plugged the AV cable from the Elura into my Sony Super-8 and recorded onto miniDV tape. Then I used the Elura to import the footage into iMovie. I did some light editing and made a DVD in iDVD. I was impressed that the video quality of my DVD looks as good as the original Super-8. In the past, all I could do with my Super-8 was record to VHS, resulting is seriously inferior video quality (why did I even bother?). If you get a DV cable you can use the Elura as a pass-through and save miniDV tapes, but I haven't used this feature because I want my old tapes to be on digital tape.
So, my short answer to your question is that both cameras work fine with iMovie. The Elura is a slightly better camera with more features than the ZR600. But if physical layout is more of a priority, you may prefer the ZR's controls with some buttons on the flip-out panel below the LCD. If you like the ZR600 but want to convert old videos to miniDV, then look at the ZR700. I chose the Elura 100 and am completely satisfied with what I got for my money.
FYI: I am not a professional. I am just a mom who likes to scrapbook and take family videos. And play with my Mac.
Happy hunting.

  • Best resolution from Canon ZR850 or Elura 100?

I'm gonna be getting a video camera soon, I'm thinking about the Canon ZR850or Canon Elura 100.
anyone that has one of these, what is the best resolution you can get with DV tapes with either of these cameras, the site lists the amount of pixels, but that doesn't really help me at all, I'd like to know the actual resolution.
    any responses would be great

Actually, those are DV camcorders, and the video will be 720x480. But those are not square pixels. If you convert it to square pixels for viewing on a computer monitor, you end up with 640x480 or 856x480, depending on the aspect ratio of your recording (normal 4:3 or widescreen 16:9).

  • Converting my VHS tapes to a DVD using a Canon Elura 100 camcorder

I'm new to iMovie and this discussion board
I am trying to convert my VHS tapes to my powerbook G4 using iMovie 3.03. I've connected the wires correctly, I've tried it with a tape in the camcorder and without a tape. iMovie shows the camera connected, but I do not see the video from the VHS tape on my laptop. I changed the AV DV to "on" like the instructions stated.
#1 do I need to upgrade to iMovie 6?
#2 Anyone know of the common problems associated with this? Specifically with the Canon Elura 100
    G4 power book   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Hi Karsten!
Thanks for the response. Yes, I am able to import from my camcorder/miniDV to my laptop. I've also made sure I don't have any other devices connected except for the power cord on the camcorder and my latop, which shouldn't matter right?
I have set up my camcorder to my VCR and tried to record on my camcorder, but that did not work either. I did not check in the manual if I had it connected right, or the settings right with this process. I'll try again and check with the manual. Also, I'm going to get iMovie 6 sometime this week, maybe that might make a difference?
    Thanks again

  • Can't control Canon Elura 100 DV Cam in PPro CS4

    Hi,
I am comparing Final Cut Express vs. Premiere Pro CS4 trial, and I cannot get Premiere to control and import from my DV Cam, which is a Canon Elura 100. Has anybody been able to use this camera? My system is a MacBook Pro, running Snow Leopard.
    Thanks!

If the camera does not have firewire out, you are out of luck.
    Firewire is required to capture.

  • Best quality for editing fcp with p2 standard definition and canon elura 100 widescreen

I am editing on FCP 7. Three cameras were used. Panasonic HPX 500 set in standard def 4x3, another small panasonic that shoots standard def was used only it was set a 16x9 and an even smaller Canon  NTSC Elura 100 was set on widescreen (16x9). My mistake is I want them look the best they can (at 16x9 or 4x3) when burned to DVD. I would prefer to go with 4x3 and crop the 16x9s. I have a Mac Pro 1,1 ; 2 Dual Core Intel Xeon 2.66 gHx and AJA Kona card. The question is: What is the BEST setting for log & capture of each device and what is the BEST sequence setting to build my project on. Right now everything looks like it has a soft shadowy image (basically low quality image - probably because it is mostly low quality... even the HPX 500 looks bad because I expanded it to fit the 16x9 screen of my sequence. And here's a strange event, even though my sequence setting is 720x480 the screen aspect ratio comes out 16x9... go figure. I seem to know less and less about this business every day. If anybody is willing to offer some advice on how I can make Chicken Salad out of this Chicken Shi_, I'd love to hear it. I hope it's just a settings problem on the ingest or sequence side.
    Thanks,

  • Canon Elura 100 and Firewire 400

I had been happily using my Canon Elura 100 with my FW400 port up until I upgraded to Leopard. The FW400 port is home to my Lacie 250GB FW 400 external drive and prior to upgrading to Leopard I had no problem sharing the port when I needed to transfer video form my camera. Now that I have upgraded to Leopard the port recognized the external HD but not the camera. I tried uninstalling all cables and rebooting...to no avail. I tried daisy chaining the camera by using the extra FW400 port on the back of the Lacie...again to no avail. I am extremely disappointed as it should "just work".
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I found another reference to this camera from someone who couldn't connect when they upgraded from OS 10.2 to OS 10.3. Apparently the issue was caused by QuickTime. He got the connection working again after following the steps in KB 301852, Final Cut Pro: Restoring a DV device connection in QuickTime 7.
Remember to do the last step "Download and install the latest version of QuickTime for Mac OS X."
Give that a shot and see how it goes.

  • Canon Elura 100 campatability with mac

My handycam is dying and need a new camera for home movies - not doing anything really technical, but editing in iMovie. So far, even though it is a few years old, I'm finding great reviews for the Canon Elura 100 using a miniDV format to decrease compression. It is not on the list provided my mac and wondering if anyone knows if it is compatible before I buy. Looking to buy online so I can't try it before I buy it. It does have a Firewire for export.
    Thanks.

I just bought the Canon Elura 100 (in February 09, got it for about 279, its last years model so I got it on close out). It works just great with my Mac, plug and play it was immediately recognized for import into imovie, well at least that was on system 10.4 and using my old version of imovie from 2006. I have yet to try it with imovie 09 which I did just recently installed last Friday, along with a system upgrade to Leopard, I have yet to see if the camera will still work as smooth with imovie 09. I am trying to adjust to learning how to use imovie 09 and having a great bit of frustration. Anyway over all Elura 100 is great little camera.

I have a sony handycam DCR-HC42, which is a piece of crap and yes thats true for it about widescreen is stretched, but for these it says they're true widescreen, so wouldn't it not be stretched?<<</div>
Well, now you're getting into a confusing area (for me at least). Since DV isn't widescreen natively, any method for widescreen footage is a compromise of sorts. While I'm not at all familiar with your particular camera model (it may or may not have image sensors constructed for native 16:9 aspect ratio), when you capture I'd assume you'd need to use an anamorphic setting in FCP in order for the image not to be stretched or squished.
Perhaps someone with more knowledge than myself in widescreen DV or with your particular camera model can chime in with actual knowledge.

  • Connecting to Canon Elura 100

Does any one know how can I connect Canon Elura 100 to new MacBook (no firewire port)?

    Hi,
Can you go to the Apple Icon and use the ALT key while selecting the first Item (About this Mac will change to System Profiler) ?
In System Profiler open the reveal triangles to Hardware > Firewire.
I take it that the Camera shows here ?
If so try try a PRAM reset.
    Shut down the computer.
Restart it holding down APPLE(or ⌘)ALT(⌥)+PR Keys until you have heard three Start Up Bongs.
If that does not work delete com.apple.ichat.plist itself (In your Home Folder/Library/Preferences) and restart iChat.
WARNING deleting this .plist loses any and all settings changed from defaults in the iChat Preferences
Font style, Colour, Balloon/IM colour, Incoming overrides, Saved Transcripts, Menu Bar icon, Alerts settings and so on,
    AND any Saved Status Messages.
The .plist does hold the info about which camera it can "See".

  • Has anyone used canon AVCHD camcorders with cs4?

Im considering getting a Canon HF10 camcorder, and want to know if anyones run into any problems editing with this, or any canon AVCHD camcorders. I hope it works well, because my only other options are ulead and pinnacle (and of course avid, sigh) and those options are pretty bleak.

I have the HF11 and love it...however editing is painful ( and I have a quad core Q9650 w 8GB). I also have a Canon HDV HV30 and like it also, they each have their pro's can con's, but for the ability to just pick it up and go it is hard to beat. Until Adobe can support the higher bit rates (i.e. above 17MB/sec) I am converting mine into cineform lossless codec(Please note they don't have a fully functional CS4 version yet, but it is supposed to be out soon).

  • FireWire, Elura 100, & OS X 10.6

First of all, I have done all the suggestions given at the many communities to no joy(reset pram; smc;reboot; disconnect everything and pwr down for minutes, hours; try on different mac; different cable; etc). I am posting this to pick the brains of those who are having this issue and/or those who may have resolved this or can suggest other "reasonable" courses to take.
After searching through all, if not, most of the posts concerning the issue with MACs not communicating with the Canon Elura 100(and maybe other models of Canon. I don't know if other models are having this problem since I only searched this model), I have found no solution. I did, however, see a pattern over the years of posts since 2006. Prior to Leopard no one was having(that I saw) issues with the camera and their macs not able to communicate...until Leopard 10.5.# came on the scene. Every post using Panther and Tiger did not have an issue from what I saw. When Leopard came some reported issues then they were resolved...others reported issues and did not check back to follow-thru...and then others said they could not get their macs to communicate with the camera. It continued on to Snow Leopard but I only saw two people who actually said it is working. One of them I asked to post their settings for FireWire so that I could see the specs. Maybe some clues can be gathered from it. I just hope he responds. There was also a person who said that the camera worked on an manufacturer installed version of Leopard but not on an upgraded version. I am sure if I knew the actual "problem" then the solution could be found easily but I cannot find what could be the issue. Is it the pin layout? Is it a power/ground issue? Is it a driver issue? Is it a firmware issue on the camera? Is it the firewire itself? Cable?
I have read that one Poster used a 4pin to 6pin FireWire cable then purchased a 6pin to 9pin adapter to plug into his mac and that it worked. I don't understand this as it sounds like the pins need to be assigned differently in order for the camera and mac to communicate via adapter. I read another person say "don't do that". What pins are being changed with this configuration? According to the pinout between a 4pin and a 9pin, pins 1 - 4 are the same. I use a 4pin to 9pin to connect my elura 100 to my macbook pro(and imac) but I get the same error message "Unable to List FireWire Devices". The only pins the 4pin does not have that correspond to the 9pin are pins 8 and 6 which are power and gound pins. Since my Elura is plugged into power the power and ground pins are not needed.
What I really don't understand is what changed between Tiger and Leopard(including Snow Leopard) that would cause the macs to stop communicating with the camera?
I am simply convinced that Canon did not do their homework in making sure their product work with the OS's as the versions progress through the years. And I believe Apple stop listing camera models that work with their OS's.
    Anyone have something to add?

I purchased another 4pin to 9pin fw cable by Gigaware this time and it worked. The Rocketfish fw cable I purchased before is crap...unless it works on a different camera or something but it did not work for me. I'm getting my $24.99 back from Best Buy.
    Gigaware FW 4pin to 9pin = Yes
    Rocketfish FW 4pin to 9pin = NO

  • Imovie '08 won't manually import movies from Canon Elura 100

I previously manipulated movies using Windows (oh the horror), but moving over to the Mac world has presented an issue with importing movies. To define clips that were easier to edit, I previously put 2 second, closed-shutter spaces between clips. imovie isn't bridging the gaps between clips and won't allow me to further import the movies automatically, nor manually import them.
When I use the onscreen play button, the camera starts for an instant and then immediately stops.
Are there settings to overcome this?

    iphoto '11 version 9.2.3.
The camera is a Panasonic Lumix DMC-TZ20 and I am using a Sandisk Ultra SDHC card.
I think it might be something to do with the camera and/or SD card as when I upload from my DSLR camera or my phone I don't have this problem.
It imports the still version of the movie but not the movie itself. I have inadvertently deleted several videos lately and its getting very frustrating!!

  • Canon HD Camcorders

What I want to do should be relatively simple, but being new to Mac and HD camcorders I'm needing some help. I will be getting a camera that is compatible with the Imovie 08 or 09 (I'll upgrade if need be, curently have '08 version). All I want to accomplish is to film high quality HD video, transfer it to my Mac Pro computer, and burn and HD disc that will play in a HD DVD player, BluRay, etc. Compatibility/ease of use is my primary objective.....
    1. I'm looking a Canon HF10, HF 100, and even the Canon Hv300 (mini DV). Which would you choose and why?
    2. Will the AVCHD video play in a new BluRay player?
    3. I believe I saw in IMovie '08 there is a drop down to burn to true HD, and also SD. Correct?
Any other camera recs would be appreciated. Like I say, all I want to do is capture and create the highest quality DVD's possible with as little headache as possible. That's why I'm trying to taylor my camera purchase to what works best with what I've already got computer wise. Thanks for all the help for a newbie.
