Canon EOS 5D MK II shooting information
I am shooting RAW with my Canon EOS 5D MK II and dearly miss the shooting information I can get with the Canon DPP “Info Panel”. For example I would like to see AF Mode and White Balance Mode in Lightroom Library Mode. Is there a way to access this info in Lightroom?
Even setting DPPViewer.exe up as an external editor within LR, and using the original file instead of a copy, does not work. LR only sends over a reduced subset of EXIF data, and the AF points and proprietary Canon data are absent in this. I suppose this is an example of Canon and Adobe implementing the EXIF 'standard' in different manners.
There's a handy EXIF Editing tool at this address - http://freeweb.siol.net/hrastni3/. I've not used it, but you may be able to add the proprietary Canon data to the 'keywords' before importing into LR. Good luck.

Canon EOS 50D Cinema Camera!
Magic Lantern has made it possible to shoot RAW video on the 5 year old Canon EOS 50D. The forgotten 15mp APS-C predecessor to the EOS 60D.
The software is very early in development, but at least one person that has shot with the camera and firmware is quite impressed. EOSHD notes that the camera has hardly any moire or aliasing in early tests and the ISO performance is terrific. The larger pixels on the 15mp sensor really do make a positive difference over the 18mp sensor that we’ve had for years now.
Below is a bit of information of what works well with the current software on the EOS 50D.

EOS-1 Bodies
Canon doesn’t mention anything about EOS-1 bodies and third party firmware in the above story. However, I have been told Canon would take legal action against anyone publicly releasing unauthorized firmware for the EOS-1 bodies, so this is probably why we haven’t seen any development of such software.

Hi I have a question about shooting in Raw with my Canon EOS 6d.
I'm in the process of learning photography and my goal was to start shooting in raw.
I have Photoshop CS5. When I tried to edit my images in raw I received an error message stating, "The photoshop camera raw plug-in did not recognize the format. If these files are from a camera, you may need to update your camera raw plug in."
In researching the issue I read that to edit in raw you need a camera model requirement of at least 7.3 which only works with CS6. My version of CS5 is 6.0.0.205. Being new to all this I see that my options are to upgrade to CS6 or convert by using DNG converter and paying a monthly fee. Two things I know nothing about and don't know which is would be more beneficial.
I'd appreciate any advise on which route to go and how upgrade and what it may cost. THANKS in advance!

That is correct. Your camera was first supported by Camera Raw 7.3. Camera Raw 7.3 will not work with CS5. You need CS6 or CC.

It all depends on your preferred workflow and your budget.
Using the DNG converter is free. There is no monthly fee. You use the converter to convert all Raw files from the EOS 6D to DNGs then edit the DNGs in CS5. That's an extra step every time - every photo. Some people don't like the extra step. Others don't mind.

Support for tethered shooting for Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i
I just read online that Apple Aperture 3.1.2 won't tether to my Canon EOS Digital Rebel T1i under OS X 10.6.7. Is this true? If so, is there a workaround or some software I can install?

JoeBTW - in case anyone is wondering, I've tested this... Canon T1i does work with tethering. (this camera is natively supported by Aperture for purposes of tethering)
For any cases where there is a camera which is not supported directly, there is also a work-around which should work for almost any camera.

Look for a plug-in called "Aperture Hot Folders" (direct link is here: http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/automator/aperturehotfolder.html?cmp )
The plug-in monitors a folder (of your choosing). Any image which shows up in that folder will automatically be imported into an Aperture project (it's on-the-fly). Essentially you'd use the Canon EOS Utility to do the tethering, which requires that you pick a target folder where it'll save all pictures you shoot during the tethered session. You then tell Aperture Hot Folders to monitor that same folder and import any images found into an Aperture project. It gives you the ability to create tethering support for any camera that can do "tethering" even if Aperture doesn't directly support the specific camera (by using the manufacturer's own tethering utility.) -
Canon EOS 350D tethered shooting LR3
I've read a couple of threads on this issue already but althouygh they are marked as being answered they don't actually provide an answer, so here goes...
I've launched LR3: File: Tethered Captue. Connect my camera to the laptop via USB. Now, if I have the camera set to PTP in the communication settings LR recognises my camera and displays Canon EOS 350 D. BUT the camera does not respond to anything! The button in LR used to capture an image does nothing, the shutter button on teh camera does nothing. The display flashesd "Busy" continuously but is completely non responsive.
If I change the communication settings to PC connection the LR does not see the camera.
There is a thread whcih discuses exactly this on this forum but she resolved it by using a different camera (hardly a resolution, more a get round which unfortunately is not available to me).
SO can someone help? I've rebooted the camera by taking the batery our. rebooted the PC and swapped USB leads and ports. No other programs are open.Hello,

CANNOT OPEN RAW FILES USING NEW CANON EOS 1D MKIII WITH PHOTOSHOP ELEMENTS 5
Hi, I have recently taken a number of RAW shots with my new Canon EOS 1D MKIII and have found that I am unable to import them into Photoshop Elements version 5 (using Microsoft Windows). Comments generated are: "the file is a format that cannot be included in the organiser" and "cannot open because it is the wrong type of file". The RAW file extension is .CR2 and I have been able to open these type of files taken on my older, and much cheaper, Canon 350D. I have spent hours considering different options but to no effect and am completely baffled. Do the two cameras produce different types of RAW files? Notably, the files do import into the Canon software 'Digital Photo Professional' but I want to undertake the more versatile manipulation in Photoshop Elements. I have managed to become even more baffled about Digital Negative ('DNG') files and wonder if there is some kind of converter I need. Would the solution be to purchase a more advanced Photoshop package like CS2? OR .......... do I need an 'Adobe Camera RAW' update? I have struggled to find the latest version for Photoshop Elements 5 to suit my Canon EOS 1D MKIII. There appears to be a 4.3.1 update but this only applies to Version CS3. Help!
You probably haven't had anyone respond to your question because it has been asked and answered so many times. However, I will try once again.
Adobe Camera Raw must have a profile for every model of every camera for which it supports the camera's raw format. It is not a matter of just supporting a file type such as your CR2 files. ACR needs to know specifically what model you are using. This is a problem that has been created by the different camera makers. They are the ones who are creating these proprietary raw formats. No, they do not cooperate with Adobe. That is why Adobe has to wait for a camera to be available, then obtain a raw file from that camera, and then create the profile so that ACR will recognize that camera. That is also why ACR is updated about four times each year, to provide support for newly released cameras.
In an attempt to create a "common" raw file format, Adobe has developed the DNG (Digital negative) file format. Adobe is providing a free DNG converter. You always want to download and use the latest version of the DNG converter because it will be the one that supports the most cameras. The DNG converter creates a digital negative copy of your raw image. It contains all of the original raw image data. The image data is precisely the same data that was in the original raw image. The difference is that the DNG file has a "standardized" file header that stores as much of the metadata as possible about the image. Metadata is the information that records the changes that you make to your image when you edit it. Some of the image data is proprietary, and is therefore not available to Adobe. Obviously, that information simply has to be ignored by ACR. There are no XMP files associated with the DNG files. The information is stored within the DNG file itself so the XMP sidecar file is not necessary.
If you decide to go the DNG route you want to make sure you are using the latest version of the DNG converter. It will convert raw files from the largest number of cameras. Those DNG files can be opened by any version of Camera Raw from version 2.4 onward. Consequently, someone who is still using Photoshop CS still has the capability of working on their raw files even if they have the most recent up to date camera.
Photoshop Elements will utilize ACR 4.3.1 and any subsequent updates to the ACR 4.x releases. Judging from past experience, there should be another release soon. No one knows for sure. These releases are never announced ahead of time. ACR is not as robust in Photoshop Elements as it is in Photoshop CS3. It is the same plug-in, but a number of options are not available. It will support the same cameras, however.
You don't need to worry about matching the DNG converter version number to your working version of ACR. The only relationship is that matching version numbers will support the same set of cameras. But the DNG files that are created can be used in any version of ACR from 2.4 onward.
Anyone who is involved with digital photography and shooting raw has become a victim of the arrogance of the camera makers. The camera makers want to protect their proprietary format, and they want to promote the use of their software. Some of that software has to be purchased, so it is another way for them to make money. Until such time as everyone agrees on a common raw format, the photographers are the ones who are at the mercy of the camera makers. And there will be a continual ongoing updating process that we will have to wait for. -
Raw file rendering problems with Canon EOS 5D in Aperture 3
Since upgrading to Aperture 3, I have had serious problems with the rendering of Canon EOS 5D (not Mark II/III) RAW files. With Aperture 2, both the preview and full-sized images looked basically the same as the original images as displayed on the camera's display, without any adjustments.
With Aperture 3, each preview images initially look fine after import, but when Aperture re-renders it from the RAW file (e.g. when displaying the full-size image), the colors are drastically intensified, and the hue is shifted generally towards green/blue. I've checked the RAW Fine Tuning, and it is set to the defaults. If I turn the default RAW Fine Tuning settings all the way down, the image is still not at all like the preview from the camera - it becomes much darker and stays too blue/green, with washed-out colors.
A friend with a Canon EOS 5D MkII also recently upgraded her Mac from Aperture 2 to 3, and hasn't experienced any problems. We've tried importing RAW files from my (non-MkII) camera to her Mac (with the default RAW Fine Tuning settings), and get the same results as with my own Mac (i.e. strange colors), so the problem seems to be related to the camera model.
I've also noticed that scanned greyscale tiff images (including images that were originally imported under Aperture 2) are changed when first displayed by Aperture 3 - they become darker and more contrasty, with lots of information lost in the shadow areas.
I've also tried removing Aperture preferences, Aperture itself, and re-installing from download, with no change in the problem. (Aperture is the current latest version, 3.3.2.)
Has anyone experienced similar problems?I'm having the same problem.
iMac running Mac OS X Lion 10.7.4 and Aperture 3.3.2. Workflow is importing through Canon's DPP and then using referenced images in Aperture. The images look great in LR4, or Canon's DPP but are flat and dingy in Aperture.

but as good as this fix is, it doesn't quite do the trick. [not being a hater, and not saying I can do better]
I just got back from shoooting 1,500 images with a 5DMii and a T2i using Canon 24-105L IS, 70-200 2.8L, 50 1.8 and a Sigma 120-400 and the T2i images are not just better, they're in a different league.
I've tried shooting in Faithful, Neutral and also toggling these presets in different ways and still can't get Aperture to match what I see on the camera's screen or in other Apps. I love the interface and DB of Aperture, but what's the point of using it if it doesn't produce and awesome image in the end? -
Aperture 3.4.3 cannot read/process RAW images from Canon EOS M.
According to the information provided by Apple, Aperture 3.4.3 is capable of reading/processing RAW files from the Canon EOS M. I do not find that to be the case. I can see them in the preview when they download but as soon as I click on them I am met with the message that the files are in a format that Aperture does not recognize. ***** because I usually ONLY shoot RAW. Am I alone here?
Thoughts?It sould work in Lion also according to this page from Apple. Are you sure you have the latest version of Aperture?
I would double check just to make sure you have the latest OS and Aperture.
What happens if you open the RAW file in Preview?
If you go to /System/Library/CoreServices you'll see the RawCamera.bundle file. Select it, right click on it and choose Get Info from the menu. The Info window will look like

.mov Files from Canon EOS 5D Mark II and Ipod Nano
I am looking at purchasing both these items with their promise to
deliver video files in the .mov format.
I am wondering whether anyone can confirm that is a 1-step transfer
into FCP, or is there fine print I need to read ? I understand going in
that the video quality of the Nano will be what it is, but wonder also
if anyone has experience with the video coming out of the Canon EOS 5D

SterneLet's get into a little more detail.
The moniker ".mov" doesn't really mean much. It means "a movie that QT can play back" - a very generic statement. Saying that a movie is a QuickTime movie is saying nothing of the underlying codec. You might have a hundred movie files with the ending ".mov" and they could all be using different codecs like: Motion Jpeg, DV, XDCam, DVCPro, DVCPro HD, H.264 and so on.... So to answer the question, "...Does the fact that it is already an .mov file make it more of a drag and drop thing?" The answer is, No. Here's why:
The 5D (and 7D) shoot a ".mov" file, yes. But specifically it's of the H.264 flavor. This is a burdensome codec. It's processor intensive. It's not meant for editing, it's meant for delivery. Furthermore, if there are going to be advances with it's native editability it's going to happen at the happen on hardware and software that are of the most current standards. And besides, that's still a big if.
There are no current machines that have true drag-drop-edit (without pain) the raw Canon .mov files. If you're thinking your current computer can't handle "hi-def footage" then it most certainly won't handle the (HD) camera native files. That doesn't mean you can't edit the footage. You'll just be back to what's been mentioned before: transcoding. You can always transcode to the highest quality codec that your Mac can handle and edit in that format. DVCPro HD? DV, at least! Don't know - whatever your machine can handle.
Summary: Native 5D camera files ---> FCP = painful, even with newest hardware/software. Rule is transcode. This is the only way people are efficiently working with this footage right now.
Footage Quality - it's quite nice! There's tons of video all over Vimeo with it now. It's a great concept that will only get better. Snoop around here too. There are tons of sample footage on the web. It is highly compressed though. All that info, and with tiny files, the information is going someplace! Being discarded. Learning to maximize an environment's given conditions will lead to minimizing the camera's inherent artifacts.
The next question to ask yourself is do you want this camera mostly for the HD movie mode or photography? The new 7D has some compromises compared to the 5D but has some things that the 5D doesn't, yet. Like framerates. The 5D is, for now, strictly 30P, while the 7D sports 24P, 25P 30P and 50P & 60P at 720P (instead of the full 1920x1200).
Hopefully that answers some questions regarding FCP dealing with the native camera files. Other than that: 5D or 7D? Both have some worthwhile merits to consider. -
Downloading images from Canon EOS 7D camera results in corrupted images.

I'm struggling to download images from my Canon EOS 7D camera. The images appear corrupted on my hard drive. This does not happen consistently. Some images get corrupted, but could appear properly when trying a second time. The errors occur in EOS Utility or in iPhoto: same (bad) result. I tried to repeat downloading on a Windows machine (separate) and in a Ubuntu environment (Virtual Machine on my mac). In both cases, I had no problem. Canon states that the problem resides in my iMac. The dealer of my camera mentioned that if they see those problems, it usually relates to bad connections or a poor USB cable. I also tried several USB ports and cables, but could not resolve the problem that way. Any suggestions?
Thanks.I've had this issue a few times and found it falls in to a few buckets, just a few things to consider if the images show up fine in the camera but not when you copy them out.
1) The format (version of RAW in my case I was using with Aperture
2) The reader
3) The drive
4) The connection
Format: when I first got the 7d I wanted to use the RAW.2 version. The .CR2 file format (Canon RAW version 2) is a digital photography RAW format created by Canon. "RAW" here means that this file stores information directly coming from the sensor, almost without processing. This file would show up corrupt every time i tried to open in in Aperture, or IPhoto on my Power-Mac
G5. I could only open it up in the supplied Canon software After some poking around I found out that I had to upgrade to Aperture3 to get the new supported RAW formats. Since I can't buy a new mack I changed the version of RAW I used.
Once I changed from using that RAW format it was fine. There are times Aperture will say that the file is corrupt but
when I restart the application it is fine I think there are some memory issues when it does this and I have to reboot the application over time.
The READER:I used to use a USB reader which was fine for the 10D but with the 7D and the 5D the files are much larger in RAW from 10 megs on the 10D to 25 megs or more on the 7D/5DMk2. After shooting 500 - 1000 shots in a night I'd have to download overnight in order to get everything. Some times the file would be corrupted coming over. If I pulled the file off later one by one or in smaller groups it would be fine. I have since upgraded to a Firwire 800 cards reader. Hours becomes 10 minutes for a 16Gig fill loaded card. not 8-10 hours.
The Drive: I've seen every files copy except 1, if I am able to hook up another drive and it works I run DiskWarrior, TechTool or SoftRAID. Usually thy confirm a bad sector in the drive. I'll back up the drive with time machine or a disk dupe software and then format the drive it it's part of a RAID I replace the drive entirely from the chain.
The connection: bad cables have also been a culprit but not often with firewire. -
How to handle an unsupported RAW format (Canon EOS T2i/550D)
I just got the Canon EOS T2i Digital Rebel today. I wasn't expecting Aperture to support its RAW files yet and it doesn't. My plan is to shoot RAW + JPEG until RAW support arrives. I've noticed some strange things happening during import. At first only a few files showed up in the import window. Checking/unchecking the import duplicates box did nothing. Eventually somehow all the photos showed up. I couldn't tell you what I did that made any difference.
The camera writes separate CR2 and JPG files to the card. The first time I imported I set the RAW + JPEG Pairs setting to "Both (JPEG as Master)". For some reason only the CR2 was imported and as expected it showed the unsupported icon. I couldn't see any JPEGs. I did the import again and now all the files are there but the CR2 and JPEGs are not linked in any way. I guess I don't understand how this should work.
Does anyone have any experience with RAW+JPEG shooting?On a retry, the import seems to be working correctly with RAW + JPEG pairs. The first time I tried this I was using an SD card formatted and used (with images on it) from a Canon EOS T1i. Maybe that was confusing Aperture.
I formatted the card with the T2i, reshot some images and re-imported with the setting of Both (JPEG as Master). The imported images have the "J" badge which means RAW + JPEG pairs with JPEG as master. If there was an "R" badge it means the RAW file is the master. When you right click the images there's a new menu entry for "Set RAW as master". Selecting that menu item shows the RAW file with the unsupported image icon.
Once Apple delivers RAW support for the T2i I can just select the "Set RAW as master" menu item to start using the RAW file. -
Help! My CS3 won't open RAW files from my Canon EOS 7D..
I have always used Photoshop CS3 - I like it and am quick with it, and I shoot RAW files on Canon EOS.
I don't want to upgrade to CS5, however since upgrading my camera to a 7D, Photoshop will no longer
open my RAW files. I've tried to update plug-ins, I've tried to work through DNG [it won't open those either]
and I've tried for hours on end to get an answer from Adobe on the phone. Nothing is working. Does anyone

Are you saying your Ps CS3 won't even open the sample DNG file (/Applications/Adobe Photoshop CS3/Samples/Doors.dng)? If that's the case then you need to make sure you have the correct Camera Raw 4 plug-in installed properly.
If it is just DNGs generated from your 7D files, then maybe the DNG Converter options need to be tweaked.

I am using an '07 MacBook 13" and have been using the Canon EOS utility to transfer photos from my camera to my laptop for the past year. I upgraded my camera about one month ago and reinstalled the Canon software with the disc supplied and have since used this updated version on six occasions to transfer the photos from my camera to laptop. Since yesterday, when I try to start up the EOS utility software to transfer photos the software crashes once I click on download images. I have repaired permissions on the hard drive, verified repairs but it said that it was ok. I have also just downloaded the latest version of Snow Leopard 10.6.3 which has made no difference. I found the disk for the Canon software and have tried installing this again, I'm not sure how to properly uninstall the software before hand though. Here is the fall crash report... any help would be very very much appreciated!!

As for the camera being brand new, things change so much in the electronics world that it would really be impossible for manufacturers to be able to keep an up-to-date disk in each of their products. Any ideas on how to download photos from a Canon EOS Rebel XT?
I just "upgraded" (?!) to OSX Lion, and now the Canon EOS Utilities app does not work. I contacted Canon and they said that they were working on an update, but didn't know when it might be available --they "answered" my request for information by providing no information. So, any good ideas on how to download mh photos?
Try Image Capture program in apps directory. You can import straight to iPhoto.

Can't Find Or Acces My RAW Files ( Canon EOS 350D
I'm new to SLR Cameras.. I have a Canon EOS 350D So y decided to shoot in RAW. But i have problems and question. If you just go to the camera directory can you see the RAW images? And i cannot find my RAW files that i shot..in my camera i can see them but in Bridge CS3 and PS CS3 nothing...i've already downloaded the update Camera RAW 4. But Nothing So how to work with RAW.. Pls Help me..because i need to shoot again tommorrow so i'm short on time..
Raizen Albertsz,I found some one with almost the same problem so i am going to change his words a little bit so that you can understand my problem.
I'd taken a few shots here and there this week in RAW + Large format, but wasn't able to find the RAW files. OK, I thought perhaps I was mistaken and didn't have the settings correct & didn't really take any RAW shots.
So I reformatted the 4GB Scandisk CF card (via the camera) and took more shots, all in RAW + Large. Going thru the camera display with Info turned on, I can verify that each one was indeed on RAW + Large. But I still can't find them.
I'm using a cable to connect my EOS Rebel XT (EOS 350D) to transfer the files to a selected folder on my pc. Opening that folder in Windows (I have Win XP)there are only the the JPGs in it. If i open Adobe Bridge CS3 or PS CS3 i would find only the JPGs. Where are my RAW .CR2 files going? I was under the impression they would be in the same folder as the JPG images, with same file number. So that i can see like a thumbnail or something.
I've downloaded the Camera RAW 4.4.1. Upgrade. I did what is written
To install with Adobe Creative Suite 3 or Photoshop CS3:
1. Exit Photoshop CS3.
2. Open My Computer.
3. Double-click Local Disk (C:).
4. Navigate to: (Please read directory carefully)
Program Files\Common Files\Adobe\Plug-Ins\CS3\File Formats
5. Move the existing Camera Raw.8bi plug-in to another location (for example, a new folder on your desktop). Ensure you keep this version in case you need to revert back.
6. Copy the Camera Raw plug-in, Camera Raw.8bi, from the download into the same folder as in step 4.
7. Launch Photoshop CS3 or Adobe Bridge.
Note: If generic camera thumbnails appear in Adobe Bridge, follow these steps:
1. Check to make sure the plug-in was installed in the correct directory in step 4 above.
2. Start Bridge.
3. Choose Tools > Cache > Purge Central Cache.
but still nothing. So what else could i do?
