Canon EOS t3i File Conversion Issue

Hello all,
I recently got a Canon Rebel t3i, and sat down to edit some of the material I shot in FCP 7.
After importing the files off of my SD cards directly into FCP and then organizining, making subclips, renaming etc., I was unhappy to find that after dragging clips into the timeline they did not playback correctly, dropping frames and generally screwing up.
Looking it up after the fact I found that apparently the h.264 MOVs that the t3i makes are no good in Final Cut without first converting to something like Apple ProRes. Bummer.
My question: will I need to go back and convert my files pre-FCP, as in the raw files straight off the SD card (using Compressor or the Canon plugin or whatever), or can I somehow not lose the work I have already done in naming and organizing clips in my FCP project?
Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Thanks!

You didn't even copy them off the card first?  Well, that's ANOTHER bottleneck...trying to edit directly from the card.
OK, you can use the MEDIA MANAGER and the RECOMPRESS option to convert all the footage and keep the organization you have.  But in the future, you need to download the Canon EOS log and transfer plugin to use this workflow:  http://library.creativecow.net/ross_shane/tapeless-workflow_fcp-7/1
or, use MPEG STREAMCLIP or Magic Bullet Grinder to convert the footage to ProREs before you edit.

  • Canon EOS 7D Battery drain Issue

    Hello,
Last week I bought a new Canon EOS 7D body. Before starting to use the camera for the first time I fully charged my battery and started using it. I used the camera for one week. I shoot raw with back display always on and LCD brightness to very low. I took around 200 images, 10 with live view mode and 2-3 image with flash and a 30 sec video and my lens is 24-105 f/4 L. I turn off the camera when not in use.
But after 200-250 images my battery just rans out of juice. According to canon, the battery supports up to 1000 shots with fully charged battery. I don't use flash at all and I did mostly indoor shoots. What I feel like is my battery is draining pretty fast. Seems very unusual. After facing this issue I tried to find out how fast my battery was draining. So I shoot 3 raw images and found that battery just drained 1% so I keep doing it and eventually found that each 3-4 images taken my battery loses 1% of charge. I can only take around 220-280 images with a fully charged battery.
    Super disappointed
I hope any Canon 7D user could shed some light with this matter. Let me know if I am doing anything wrong here. Thanks in advance.

The way you're using the camera is causing the battery to drain rapidly...
Using the LCD screen continuously heavily drains it no matter how bright you have it set... whether it be active while shooting, reviewing stills, using Live View, or shooting video. It takes a lot of power to keep that screen on.
Also, Live View and shooting video both consume a more power for additional reasons. In either of these modes both the camera's mirror is kept flipped up and the shutter held open, and doing both these puts a pretty heavy and continuous drain on the battery, as long as the camera is in either mode.
I've shot with a pair of 7Ds for over four years. I use the Canon vertical/battery grip on it, which holds two batteries. I mostly shoot stills and consistently get 2500+ shots with a pair of freshly charged LP-E6 in that grip, which was roughly 30% or more increase over a pair of freshly charge BP511A in 50D grip that I used before.
I try to conserve battery power...
I have the cameras set to go into sleep mode after the shortest possible time.... they wake up instantly so this is no problem. I use the viewfinder and have the LCD off most of the time. It comes up instantly when I occasionally go in an review reviewing images, or use the LCD to make changes in the menu, etc. I use Live View occasionally, but not often. I don't shoot video with my 7Ds. This is with a variety of lenses, including a number with IS, and using continuous AI Servo focus a lot. I do a lot of sports/action shooting, which often involves heavy use of  AF and IS, tracking subjects and taking bursts of shots.
I carry two extra batteries per camera... but rarely have to use them even on days when I shoot as much as 5000 images with the two cameras.  Usually if I need to use the spare batteries, it's because I forgot to recharge the ones in the camera the night before!
Canon's rating of the shots per charge uses some industry standardized method of testing (CIPA?), for comparing cameras. It's probably still shots only with minimal review, and some percentage using the built-in flash (another heavy power user... I never use the built-in).
Any DSLR you might choose, used the way you are using the 7D, will rapidly drain the battery and fall short of whatever rating the manufacturer has given it under the standardized testing.

  • Editing Canon Rebel T3i files in FCP 5

I'm a newbie to FCP and shoot videos with a Canon Rebel T3i. Obviously, I can copy the .mov files from the SD card to my Mac and edit in Final Cut Pro 5, but it's a bear (slow rendering time and whatnot) and I'm never impressed with the video quality output once I'm done rendering. Specially, the files I am trying to work with now are in 1280x720 format, 60 fps.
    Here are some questions/scenarios:
    1. Can I import my video files straight from my SD card into Final Cut Pro 5 (seeing as I only have Log and Capture and not Log and Transfer)?
    2. Can I use Compressor or some other program to convert my files to a more FCP-friendly file?
    3. What setting must I use in FCP to import my HD files and export them as HD files?
    Thanks!

    1. Yes, but you won't be happy working with it.
    2. Yes, and that would be whatever HD editing codec you have in your QT library…hopefully Pro Res 422.
    3. Some flavor of 720p60. (I don't have 5.1, so I can't be more specific.) The sequence settings should be Frame size: 1280X720 frame size, Pixel AR: square, Field Dominance: None.
I'd use a card reader and copy everything to a media drive. Then transcode (MPEG STreamclip is faster than Compressor). Then import.
    Good luck.

  • Canon XF300 mxf file conversion

Hello. I have a new Canon MX300. The file format this unit uses is MXF. There are many MXF file conversion software products on the market such as "Pavtube or Borosoft". Basically these convert the MXF files into useable format such as Mpeg or what ever else you desire in a lossless format. Then that file can be utilize in a editing software to create a movie. My question is, instead of having to use the file conversion software can Adobe Premier Elements 12 bypass the conversion step? Does it need a plug in to work. Talking with the GREAT Canon rep today he lead me to believe it would but I wanted to ask the experts here.
    Thanks!

    cdnew1,
Welcome to the forum, and thanks Jeff.
PrPro can natively handle MXF files from the Canon, but I do not know of a way to Import those directly into PrE. There might be an available plug-in, but I do not know of it. Also, with the 3rd party plug-in market, PrE is pretty far down their lists, as it only costs about $100, so the users are not likely going to spend much on a plug-in.
Perhaps others will have some useful tips on handling the MXF files.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • Acrobat XI Pro and MS Word 2010 file conversion issues

I have created a photo journal comprised primarily of photo collages and text boxes using Microsoft Word 2010.  Acrobat XI Pro is installed as well.  When I "Save as Adobe PDF" the resulting PDF is missing many - not all - of the text boxes placed on top of the photos, and the some of the photos themselves are "reordered" - the one placed on top moves to the back.  What might be causing this?
If I select "Save As" and then select the "PDF" option from Word's dropdown menu, the resulting PDF - which is much smaller than the one created by the "Save the Adobe PDF" option - retains all the data in the Word file, in the correct order.
Note - this did not happen when I was using Acrobat X Pro.  And this  file I am currently working with converted perfectly to an Adobe PDF when I was still using Acrobat X Pro.

    Hi,
Can you please share your test file because the issue you mention here seems to be file specific?

  • Canon EOS 5d MkII/RAW "issues"

OK I'm considering buying an EOS 5d MkII but I've read a few reports on the internet that there are problems with CS3 dealing with RAW files and refusing to open them. I've also read that the only remedy is to upgrade to CS4 (which I am unwilling to do as, a) there aren't enough new features to justify the cost and b) CS3 is sooo buggy and doesn't exactly instill confidence that the next incarnation will be any better on my Mac) anyway, the long and short is, is it true or has there been some kind of fix for this?
    Thanks for any advice.

The "remedy" is to use the free DNG convertor.

  • Microsoft OneDrive and Canon 70D RAW Files display issue

    Hello Guys,
I have a Canon 450D and I was really surprised that my RAW files (*.CR2) were displayed on Microsoft OneDrive without making a JPG files.
    That's really cool !
Few weeks ago I receive my new Canon 70D.
I have upload my RAW files (*.CR2 also) on OneDrive and the file is not displayed.
To make it easy, you will find both files here :
    http://1drv.ms/1qvndZW
I all ready ask support on their forum : Here
But they ask me to ask you...
By any chance, has Canon changed their .CR2 files format that would explain Microsoft has to update their "Convertor" ?
Thanks in advance for your time !

    Solved!
    Go to Solution.

Camera RAW is more of a "concept" than a specific standard.   The idea behind a RAW file is that the data unloaded from the chip will not be altered in any way which results in a loss of original data.
JPEG images use a "lossy" compression algorithm which will normalize data when differences are so subtle that your eye probably would not have noticed the difference.  But when images are adjusted, subtle differences may be "stretched" and the loss of the original data can be detrimental to ability to adjust the image later and still get good results.
BUT... since every camera can have a difference sensor, different resolutions, etc. the method needed to decode a RAW file and display the image can be different literally on a model-by-model basis.  When you work with RAW files, you always need the codec specific to that very camera model.... not just "any" .CR2 codec will work.  This is the same with all other brands of cameras as well.
Microsoft does not include camera RAW updates in the default OS updates that you may be applying to your computer on a regular basis (Apple does... every couple of months I get a camera RAW update and if I read the notes, it'll have a list of new camera models on the market for which they've added RAW support.)    But Microsoft DOES make the RAW updates available... they're just not automatic.  You have to go download and install them.
See this link at the Microsoft support website:  http://support.microsoft.com/kb/2899189
If you look down the page on that specific link, you'll notice a whole list of cameras for which they've added RAW support and the Canon 70D is among them.

  • I have the Canon Rebel EOS T3i and was wondering what is the best setting to take firework pictures.

How can I get great pics of fireworks with my Canon EOS T3i??

For this kind of photography, it is essential to have no movement of the camera at all.  Here are the settings that have worked for me:
    1. Tripod - this is an absolute must for any kind of night photography, including fireworks.
    2. Cable release - since you can move the camera just by pressing the shutter release, you have to activate the shutter without touching the camera.  You can do this either with a cable release or with an infrared trigger.  Be sure to get the correct cable or remote for your camera since they differ from one model to another.
    3. Use manual mode and activate Live View whenever possible.  The flipping of the mirror within the camera can also generate movement, so Live View is very helpful.
    4. Use an aperture of f/8-f/11.
    5. Use ISO 100.
    6. Focus at infinity - you can manually zoom during the exposure for an interesting effect.
    7. 4 second exposure to start and adjust up or down based on your results.
    8. You will likely need a wide focal length such as 35mm to start, and then adjust as necessary if you have a zoom lens.
    9. Other possible adjustments - set the White Balance to 5300K; set the exposure compensation to -1.0 EV. This is a full 1-stop underexposure to keep the firework highlights from burning out.
I haven't posted photos to this forum before, but if this works, here's an example of what I mean.  This was shot last summer with a Canon 60D, 4 second exposure at f/11, ISO 100, 32mm.

  • CAN NOT OPEN  CANON EOS20D  RAW FILE IN PHOTOSHOP CS2

I had Photoshop CS2 installed on my PC some years ago and could open my raw files from my canon eos 20d. I changed the hard drives in my pc to solid state drives and had to reinstall photoshop cs2. I could not activate photoshop as it was too old a version so I had to download from adobe website with their activation code. Now, I can not open any of my canon eos 20d files. I have taken some now photos just a few days ago and the problem still arises. I get the message that it does not recognise this type of file. Any ideas?

  • Canon EOS T4i compatibility check

    Hello,
This table :http://helpx.adobe.com/lightroom/kb/tethered-camera-support-lightroom-4.html  shows the Canon EOS T3i and T5i as compatible with Lightroom. However the T4i, which is almost identical to the T5i, is not listed. Is this correct or a typo? If correct, does anyone know why?
    Thanks.
    Bret

It does appear to be an oversight.  It likely already works, but official testing may have been overlooked.  I've flagged it up for the team to check, but you can go ahead and give it a shot in the meantime.

  • 1080p30 .mov files from canon eos 5DMarkII in Final cut express 4.0.1

    Hi everybody.
i need some help to import HD vidéo .mov files from Canon Eos 5DMarkII in final cut express.
The files is in 1080p30 (h264) like avchd but in the final cut configuration i have only 50i and 60i option in HDV and AVCHD
Final cut necessity to do a render (5h for 15min on my G5) and the movement quality is not the same.
Anybody have a idea to import Progressive files in final cut ?
maybe they have an update with new avchd 1080p codec in configuration ?
or i need final cut pro...?
    Thanks in advance
and sorry for my english...i'm french

There is no good solution for working with this camera in FCE. It's 30fps progressive. There is no true video format that is 30fps. This is something Canon was cobbled together for this stills camera.
You can use MPEG Streamclip to convert the material to QuickTime using the Apple Intermediate Codec at 1920x1080. I think that's what it shoot. You should check the camera manual to confirm it shoots 1920 and not 1440.
The problem is the frame rate. You can convert it to 29.97fps or to 25fps. 25fps conforms to the European frame rate, but I don't know how well Streamclip will do this conversion. You also need to make sure the material is not interlaced by Streamclip.
The other problem is that FCE handles 1080 as an interlaced format, because for production it's supposed to be an interlaced format, at least in the formats, HDV and AVCHD, that FCE works with. You can set your sequence properties to have no field dominance, which should prevent it interlacing during compositing of any effects.

  • No Finder image preview for Canon EOS-1D X .CR2 files

I am working on a catalog and have been provided nearly 2000 images from which to choose. I have had no preview issues up until the photographer started using a Canon EOS-1D X. Before, he was using a Canon EOS 5D Mark II and I could preview the images via Info, spacebar, column preview, or Place command. I have no problems opening the RAW images fine in Photoshop just with the Finder preview. I typically view the images by opening a folder and previewing as icons so I can quickly wade through them. I have everything turned on in Show Image Options and have no issues with previews from any other image files except these from the new camera. I am having to open them one-by-one in Photoshop just to see the image content. Is there a plug-in or something that will generate a preview? I'm about to pull my hair out!

Addendum: I have discovered that I can preview the images easily in Adobe Bridge so it has basically solved my problem BUT I would still like to know why I get no Preview. Is it a system thing? I'm only on Snow Leopard. Maybe Lion or Mountain Lion supports it...???
