CANON FS100 + iMovie '08

Good evening to all. I would like to buy Canon FS100 but i read online that there are many problem using it with iMovie and Mac. But on the official site apple imovie i read that fs100 is compatible...
Someone can tell me if i can edit video recorded with canon fs100 with imovie '08? I download a .mod file, but imovie 08 can't import it...
Thanks to all

HI there,
I had no problem with mine! Nice camera, but I returned it for the HF100 because I figured I should go for the HD one "for the future". While the "better one" is superior, I wonder if I would have been better off keeping the first one for simplicity's sake.
Anyway, I use 8 gig SDHC cards, save the files to disk images which I can launch and have the iMovie see it as if it was the camera. Also, that size memory card is good for saving to dual-layer DVD.
Oh, one thing I did not like about the FS100 is that the zoom lever made a clicking sound when released and it was clearly heard on the results. This cold have been an issue on my camera only, but I never got the hand of keeping my finger on the lever instead of letting it go.
The other day I helped a lady (total stranger) trying to decide on a camcorder and recommended/coached her into this one.
Cheers!
Glen

  • IMovie and Canon FS100 Camcorder - will they work together?

Hi! A MacUser since 1989, and using a digital camera for stills and videos since 2004 - +but really have done next to nothing with a true "camcorder".+
I'm considering a Canon FS100 camcorder which records onto SD and SDHC cards (but has no internal memory / storage).
    *But my concerns are this:*
    1. How to transfer from the SD cards to my Mac? (currently 10.4.11 but likely 10.5 in a month or so)
    2. If I purchase the camcorder in the USA it is apparently set for NTSC - i.e. I can only play back from the camera to an NTSC television - but I travel in the US, live in Europe (PAL) -- is there no "switch" to choose either the recording or the playback mode (like there is with my iPod Touch- for playback that is).
    3. What about "still photos" that I take with the FS100? Are they .jpg files? Can iPhoto handle them?
    4. Indeed what about iPhoto: Can it import all the videos and photos from an FS100??
Again, this is all real "new new" to me; and I don't want to buy/carry 2 camcorders (an NTSC and a PAL!!!) --
Any help or reference guides etc really appreciated. The big trip is not tomorrow, so I've got some time here.
    Thanks! Steve Schulte

    Hi there Stephen,
I feel so lucky that I stumbled into a great file management scheme with my Canon HF100 and I can also report that before that I tried an FS100 and the same procedure for a week before I got this camera. I picked up this method on a thread on MacRumours, I believe.
Without the inconvenience of needing the AC power adapter plugged in to download files direct from the camera, simply use a USB card reader to read directly from the card. The card will mount as a device labeled "Canon" and inside that is a single directory labeled "Private". Inside that is the one you want, labeled "AVCHD". Create a disc image just a little larger than this file and drag the "AVCHD" file over to the disk image. Name the disk image to suit, such as place/date. Both iMovie 08 and FCE recognize the mounted image as a camera and import the footage just fine. Not quite PNP, but this procedure is so smooth that I'm almost surprised that this video n00b could get it going so well If you are in a hurry you can just drag the file to a folder named similar to what you will name the disk image to keep them sorted and do the disk images later on.
I use 8 gig SDHC cards so that I can archive each full card's AVCHD file's disk image on a dual layer DVD. I leave the images on a hard drive as well, but won't be shy about deleting less precious ones and using the DVD's only for storage. The images will mount directly from the DVD and import easily too.
This weekend I upgraded from 10.4.10 to 10.5.4, installed FCE, and was able to mount a disc image and import the files as easily as before.
But of course, you need an Intel Mac do work with the AVCHD files....
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers!

  • Updated software to allow Canon FS100 to import to iMovie

Updated from iLife 06 to iLife 08
Install software would not download iMovie 7 - reason specification of laptop will not run HD version
    Presently using iMovie 6.0.3
Camcorder is Canon FS100 - PAL system - SD video MEPG-2 format
Is there a non HD version of iMovie 7 that can be downloaded

Quicktime MPEG-2 Playback now downloaded to computer
When you say downloaded to the computer," do you mean installed it? If not, then you have to run the correct installer package to place the software into the proper Library folder. Make sure you install the 6.4.1 version which is compatible with late versions of QT 6 and 7, as well as, Intel platforms.
I note in Quicktime Preferences an option to update given... "find and install new 3rd party Quicktime software"
No. You run the installer package for the MPEG-2 Playback component and it installs the component where it belongs. Make sure the QT Player is closed when you do this as the list of available components is only generated when the QT Player opens if you are trying to play content in the QT player. (Don't know about MPEG Streamclip here, but it is probably best to have it also closed.) The Option you are referring to is for the downloading of alternative codecs. If you don't need them, then don't add then since they may create conflicts. In the case of components, generally speaking, the fewer, the better.
Do I activate and install and proceed as previously directed
You only need to install the component one time. (I.e., just double click the installer and it will do the rest.) Once the component is installed, open MPEG Streamclip, and drag one of your MOD files to the Streamclip player window and drop it. It should become visible in the player and your can then play the file or set up your conversion as previously described.

  • IMac won't see my Canon FS100

I can't upload video from my Canon FS100 using iMovie 7.0. The camera shows up on the desktop as "NONAME", but under the system profiler the USB port sees it correctly. I've hunted through the discussion boards and tried several of the suggestions; none of which worked. I thought maybe I needed a software update so I downloaded iMovie 7.1.4. When I tried to install it I get an error that says "An eligible iMovie application was not found in the location /Applications."
    I'm running an iMac G5, with OS X 10.4.11.
    HELP!

Going back to the beginning and reading your first post again...You are unable to install 7.1.4. You are at 7.0. If you install 7.1.4 you can most likely use your camera with no third party workarounds.
Th upgrade from 7.0 to 7.1 was a major upgrade. So my recommendation would be to first download and install 7.1 Once you do this you will be able to upgrade to 7.1.4. [Get the download on this page|http://support.apple.com/downloads/#imovie]
There is a post on the FS100 which describes the exact steps to import from this camera. I assume you have seen this post. So go ahead and get the software updated. Be sure to run software update as well. At some point there was an iLife update that was required along with the iMovie update.

  • How to import Canon FS100 footage (.MOD) via Log and Transfer?

I have a Canon FS100 video camera. I records in standard definition 480p video, and saves the files in the .MOD format. Lately, I've just been using iMovie to edit my videos because it can easily import to files. Final Cut Express cannot, though, as far as I'm aware. What I've been doing is copying the files onto my computer, then using a convertor to convert the MOD files into .MOV files, but then FCE has trouble editing it. It causes it to have to render after each edit. Is there an easier way to edit my video? I've tried converting the MOD files into other formats such as DV video, but it still has the rendering problem. My FS100 doesn't show up in the Log and Transfer window of FCE. Is there a way I can make it appear? Thanks.

.mod files are a problem. Are you shooting in 4:3 or 16:9 mode?
What app are you using to convert them ... and what are you converting them to?
The .moi files are index information associated with the .mod files that contain the actual video.
MPEG Streamclip should be able to convert the .mod files. You may need the QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Componen, if you don't already have it on your Mac. ($20 download from the Apple Store). (You may need to change the .mod file extension to .mpg then open it in MPEG Streamclip.) If you are shooting 4:3 then in MPEG Streamclip convert the videos to QuickTime using Apple DV/DVCPRO-NTSC compression (this is a selection on the conversion screen).

  • Import Canon FS100 video footage onto Mac OS X?

I took home my school's video camera-- Canon FS100-- and when it won't let me import my footage onto my Mac OS X. When I try, it says that it is unrecognizable.
I thought that all Canons were compatible with Mac's?
How do I import this footage?

    1. The camcorder must be connected to the mains power supply, Import will not work if the camera is running on battery
    2. Connect the USB cable to the camera and the Mac
    3. Switch on the camera, and set it to playback (not record) mode. The camera should appear as a new drive in the Finder
    4. Start iMovie 09. If the Import window does not appear (may take a few seconds), choose File, Import from Camera

  • Confused by Canon HF10, iMovie '09, AVCHD and file size

Please forgive me for these (probably) basic questions, but right now I feel like a complete idiot.
I recently purchased the Canon HF10. At first I thought it was going to be great to have an HD camcorder (a reason to buy an HDTV, too) for home movies, but evidentially this isn't going to be as nice as I thought. I don't understand the following:
I basically want to shoot video of softball games and save for family use - nothing professional here, just good/great quality home videos. Also, need to be able to stop-action and step through video for softball skill analysis.
    1. When I use iMovie '09 to import my video, it is taking forever to transfer. Why?
    2. If the internal memory is 16GB, why is it taking up >100GB when I transfer it to my computer? (I don't get it)
    3. What does the camera frame rate setting mean by i60 Normal or PF30 or Pf24? (again, I feel really stupid)
    4. Is iMovie '09 the right app or is there something else? If something else, why? Again, I basically want to shoot video of softball games and save for family use - nothing professional here, just good/great quality home videos. Also, need to be able to stop-action and step through video for softball skill analysis.
Thanks for understanding my lack of knowledge and all your help and insight is appreciated!
    SP

Regarding stop action, this camera has the ability for you to take stills while video is recording. It's pretty interesting. Even better, iMovie lets "Add Still Frame to Project." Also if you play video from iMovie Project or Event window's, you can easily view one frame at a time by repeatedly pressing the left or right arrow.
Hard disk storage is cheap now, save up and buy a drive to archive your video. That way later on you could re export your movies to an HD compatible format since burning to DVD as your doing now is not HD.
Also, yes definitely use 60i for action video. This camera really does a great job.
The thing about 30p/24p with this camera is that the resolution is reduced: 60i=1920x180 pixels whereas 30p and 24p modes on this camera is 1440x1080.

  • Canon FS100 import and quality issues

I have a imac (lastest model) and imovie 11. I have a canon camcorder. Flash memory one. I movie cannot read the mod files form camcorder or if I make them mpg's they still cannot be read.
If I try to import them via usb into imovie there is alot of image degradation. If I do this on a windows computer, the image quality is perfect.
What can I do to fix this problem on a mac?

  • How can I avoid video quality loss when burning Canon FS100 footage to DVD?

When I put the footage onto iMovie it looked great, and then I sent it to iDVD to burn onto a disc. After I burned it to a DVD and watched it on my DVD player, I noticed that I lost a lot of the video quality (or at least it seemed). It looks a little fuzzy and seems like it could be much better considering how great it looks in iMovie. Is it just me or does sending it to iDVD make me lose video quality? What is another alternative so I don't lose the quality? I've heard that Wondershare is a good option and that you won't lose any quality burning it from there, is that true? What is my best alternative? A relatively expensive DVD burner? Thanks, any help is appreciated.

A good suggestion was made before me, but I have another twist on the matter.
From Wikipedia on DVD: "Although many resolutions and formats are supported, most consumer DVD Video discs use either 4:3 or anamorphic 16:9 aspect ratio MPEG-2 video, stored at a resolution of 720×480 (NTSC) or 720×576 (PAL) at 29.97, 25, or 23.976 FPS."
Notice that the resolution for a DVD is roughly 700x500, which when multiplied gives you 350,000 pixels per frame. Now compare that with the video resolution of the FS100, which I see on web pages (eg, on dabs.com) is 710,000 pixels per frame.
This means your camera records more quality than can fit on a DVD. Approximately twice as much information. This means half the information is lost during the conversion. That's why you notice a drop in quality. If you burned to a BluRay disk, you'd probably lose nothing, since they store more information per frame. So your alternative is to buy a BluRay burner and play it back on a BluRay drive.
Another alternative is to burn it to a DVD but not in a form that's playable by a DVD, just in a form thats readable and playable by a computer. You will lose no information that way, but it will be playable only in a computer.

  • Analogue/Digital Conversion w/ Canon HV20 & IMovie 08

I can't figure out how to transfer VHSc tapes from my old JVC Camcorder through my new Canon HV20 into iMovie '08 on my new Imac 24" 2.4.
I have the JVC connected to the Canon with AV cable. And I have the Canon connected to the IMac with a DV cable from the Canon's HDV/DD port to the Imac's firewire port. And I have the Canon's AV=>Dv function turned on.
I put both camcorders on the "play" mode. The audio and video signals get passed from the JVC to the Canon. But when I select Import in iMovie, I get the message "NO TAPE" in the upper left hand corner of the blue screen and neither video nor audio gets passed through. Help!!!!

This is a shot in the dark, but I think you may have to have a tape in the Canon (or whatever brand pass-through you use).
I was doing the same thing as you about 4 years ago (on a PC at the time) and I vaguely remember the "No Tape" message on my Sony. Technology has changed a lot in that time, so I may be WAY off base.

  • Canon FS100 error while importing

I have read comments about it working easily with iMovie08, and having used other cams and having no problems with .mod files, I was surprised this doesn't work.
I plug in the camera, turn it on and get a NO NAME drive come up, i then load up iMovie08 and it starts to create thumbnails. The a box jumps up and asks which clips to select or select all. i have now done this a few times, even just selecting a 10 sec clip to test on, once the blue zips across i get error on importing 1/1 clip, I press done and it goes back to the new event and there is nothing.
i have tried using the canon software which is a joke, I have looked everywhere for something I might be doing wrong, all drivers and updates are upto date, so what else ?
can I have too many codecs in quicktime ? will the conflict ?
I also have divx, flip4mac installed.
would really appreciate some advice, as I have a movie i need to edit and can't do what I normally do

    Hi Dominic,
Lennart forget to mention his usual trick to reset firewire ports, you do so by unplugging your Mac for while, not just switch off, disconnect from powerline for ~15min.
.... and you're sure, the camcorder is in play-mode......?

  • Downloading Video from a Canon Digtal Video Camcorder FS100 - flash camera

I just purchased a Canon FS100 Digital Flash Camera from Best Buy. However, there is no software available that I can find to download the movies to my G4 and then edit and view them. I'm currently running a G4 Model Name: Power Mac G4
    Model Identifier: PowerMac3,6
    Processor Name: PowerPC G4 (3.3)
    Processor Speed: 1 GHz
    Number Of CPUs: 1
L2 Cache (per CPU): 256 KB
L3 Cache (per CPU): 1 MB
    Memory: 512 MB
    Running Mac OS X 10.5.5 (9F33)
software. I cannot use iMovie because my computer is too old. Is there any software available that I can use for this camcorder. the box said that there was no software for the Mac OS system. However, the tech said that you can use this camera on a Mac.

    Hello, Dave
Have you taken a tape shot on the GL-1 and used the
Sony camera to capture the footage via firewire? Do
the vertical stripes show up when shooting 4:3?
Yes, I have done that and yes, the vertical stripes still appear. The vertical stripes appear both in 4:3 and 16:9 footage.
If the vertical lines don't show up on your NTSC
preview monitor, I wouldn't worry about it. They are
probably outside of the safe area and won't affect
    its viewability much.
You are probably right, Dave, it's quite possible that the vertical stripes are outside of the safe area in 4:3. However, I am new to 16:9. Is this the case also in 16:9? I am talking about maybe 20 or 30 pixels wide black bands on either side of the frame.
If you are capturing the video via analog from the
canon into some type of DV bridge, These vertical
bands are normal and represent horizontal sync
    characteristics.
No, I am capturing the video directly through Firewire.
Canon does several tings in anunique way that differs
from what a person would expect. You may have
stumbled onto one of Canon's quirks.
I think you are right about that too. I emailed Canon technical support a little Quicktime movie containing two shots, one from the GL-1 and one from the Sony, but I haven't heard back from them yet...
    Hope this helps. Post back.
    Regards,
    Dave F
    Thanks for your post, Dave.

  • Does iMovie'11 support Canon XA20 (1920x1080 50i) ?

I consider to buy the new Canon XA 20 camcorder, which will be available in The Netherlands shortly. In the list 'Supported camera's iMovie I read about the Canon XA20: "iMovie does not support footage recorded in 1080-50p from this Camcorder". Does anyone know if iMovie'11 supports the format: 1920x1080: 50i/PF25 (24Mbps, 17 Mbps). It seems to be possible recording in this format with the XA20.
    Thanks!
