Canon G10 Raw Shots

So I think I realize that I cannot use my antiquated Photoshop 5 with RAW shots taken on my Canon G10. However I was not able to get any assistance from the help line as to which version I need to upgrade to. I don't have an open bank account so if anyone could make a suggestion as to which is the most cost effective that would work I would greatly appreciate it. I'm starting to think that shooting in RAW was a mistake. All are underwater pictures taken in Bonaire and I would really like to work with them

If by version 5 of Photoshop you mean just plain Photoshop 5.0 from the late 90s or early 2000's, then it is too old to upgrade to the current version of Photoshop which is 11 or CS4 and you cannot buy an earlier version of Photoshop, either, so the answer to your question is that you need to buy Photoshop 11 at the full price if you actually want to use Photoshop directly with your RAW images.
You may be talking about some other product with Photoshop in its name, like Photoshop Elements or Photoshop Premier (video) or Photoshop Lightroom, but the answer to what version to upgrade to is still likely the same, unless, perhaps Photoshop Elements 5 is still a valid candidate for the current version of Photoshop Elements which is 8.
You may also be talking about Adobe Camera RAW version 5 and since the current version of ACR is 5.6 and upgrades from ACR 5.x to 5.6 would be free, there is no upgrade cost. ACR 5.x shipped with Photoshop 11 or CS4 so you'd be set by just performing the latest ACR update.
If you don't want to spend $600-ish on PS-CS4 then you could spend half that and get Lightroom 2, now, or even use the LR3 beta from labs.adobe.com until next April and then buy LR3 for $300-ish.
However, if you don't want to spend even that amount of money, then I'd suggest getting Photoshop Elements 8 for around $99 and update it (manually according to the instructions on the ACR update pages) to ACR 5.6 and you'll be able to work with your images one-by-one, which is not as slick as doing multiple images in ACR as hosted in Photoshop, itself, but you'd be using the current ACR technology.
There may be version differences I am not that up on if you are on a Mac and using Elements, where perhaps PSE5 is not that old compared to the currently available version and possibly upgradable to whatever the current Mac version of Elements is.
If none of this answers your question, then be more specific as to what Photoshop 5 means, exactly, since many products have Photoshop in their name.

Processing Canon G10 RAW Images in CS3 and Lightroom 2.1

I've not found a post on point. If I've missed one, sorry.
Contemplating getting a G10. After research here's what I understand. Please, correct me if I am wrong:
1. To process a G10 image in ACR, one has to have 5.2. One cannot use 5.2 in CS3. To process the image in CS3 one has to first convert to DNG. This can be done by way of a separate converter OR in Lightroom 2.1, on import.
2. Lightroom 2.1 will process the image in either RAW or DNG formats.
So, since I own both Lightroom and CS3 -- I will be able to use ACR in Lightroom if I don't want to convert to DNG first.
Am I right?
I don't want to buy the camera if I can't use my usual workflow.

PS. I think my CS4 Master Suite will arrive tomorrow. But, there is a lot of odd information about ACR and the G10 out there so I thought I'd take the time to clear it up and see if I got it right.

Lightroom 2.1 does NOT support native files from the G10. LR 2.2, which will be released in December will. So for both programs you need to use the Adobe DNG converter 5.2 to convert to DNG for the time being. It is unclear whether when you have LR 2.2 and CS3 installed whether "Edit in Photoshop" will work correctly with files from cameras such as the G10. It will always work fine if you use dng.

Adjusting canon G10 raw in elements 8

I'm using the trial version before I buy. The Camera Raw plugin in the program is 5.5.0.97. I can open the raw file in editor, but it doesn't bring up the raw editing sliders. Is it because I'm using the trial version, or do I need to do soemthing in set up.

CS4 MAC Canon G10 RAW file panorama stitch problem problem

Hi,
I was loading 5 RAW files into CS4 auto stitch. The file view fine a thumbnails in ACR 5.2 and Bridge but I noticed that when I was attempting to select which images to select for stitching in CS4 that the I could not see thumbnail detail in the selection view panel. After I selected the images I wanted by file name CS4 crashed when I tried to start the panorama stitching process... Anyone else had problems like this?
MacPro 2.66 GHZ dual core. 6GB RAM and Latest version of CS4, ACR on Leopard.

It's working fine on my machine running Tiger. Your setup is a lot more powerful than mine, and mine handles a 5-raw-image-file panorama fairly snappy.
Photoshop 11 ("CS4"). Dual bootable, DP MDD 1.25GHz G4 (2004), maxed out at 2GB of RAM, both Spotlight and Dashboard disabled, Photoshop primary scratch disk on dedicated 160GB internal drive, at least 100GB available on each of the four internal drives, up to 300GB on some. Aperture 2 Rendering underwater sunburst wrong - Canon G10, .cr2 RAW format

I've noticed that when Apple's Aperture 2 displays my underwater Canon G10 RAW pictures of sunbursts - picture of the sun taken from underwater - they are rendered wrong with a dark ring around the burst and are really blown out.

Both photos use default settings, the "aperture214_g10RAW.jpg" was exported using Aperture 2.1.4 while the "photoshopCS4_g10RAW.jpg" was exported with Adobe Photoshop CS4.
Anyone have problems with this? Is there a setting I need to change to get it right?

Below is a link to my website where you can download the .cr2 file. I zipped it up. Please let me know what you find out. I also tried converting the file to .dng with Adobe's converter and still get the same look with the Apple interpreter.
In Aperture I tried tweaking the RAW, white balance, highlights, recovery, hue boost..etc but can not reproduce what it looks like in the Photoshop render.
Let me know what you can do. File is 13mb.

Macbook won't read card from Canon G10 in USB port

I can't copy Canon G10 RAW files from an SD card via a USB card reader onto an aluminum MacBook. I tried using Adobe Lightroom (the way I usually do this on another machine) to import the files but it couldn't recognize them. I tried to copy the files into a folder on the Desktop but I got a insufficient priveleges message. It seemed to copy the file names but tnot the files. When I tried to remove the card I got a "File is in use and can't be removed" message.
The card reader and the card work fine on a 24"Intel iMac.
Another USB card works fine in the card reader on the MacBook, too.
I'm puzzled.

Some added info, i CAN boot the bricked machine into Safe mode, but at reboot I get stuck in the same cycle again.
Oh, and in SafeBoot, the Macbook still tells me that no Airport card is installed, even though I know it does (and it's not knocked loose or anything).....

Canon G10 thumbnails don't work??

I have CS4 and have installed the latest update but the thumbnails for Canon G10 raw files do not display (ACR will open and convert them properly). All other raw files (nikon) do display thumbs.
Any one have a tip for troubleshooting this?

Have you purged the cache for the offending folder(s) through the Bridge Tools menu?
Also check the ACR forum. I seem to remember that some type(s) of files from certain Canon files are not supported (not considered true or conforming raw files)

IPhoto 09 can't import RAW file (.CR2) from Canon G10 Camera

Every time I try to import a RAW image on my G10 camera (the file extension is .CR2) into iPhoto, the program says that the file is in an unrecognized format. Yet the OS and I believe iPhoto supports RAW from the Canon G10. I have updated my software. Does anyone know why I cannot import this file?

Since the G10 support came with the 10.5.7 update download and reapply 10.5.7 COMBO Update again followed by a repair of disk permissions. See if that will jump start the import.

Aperture 2 won't recognize Canon G10 CR2 RAW files

The Canon G10 just came out and I got one!! But Aperture will not recognize the CR2 files that it makes. Any idea how to make this work?

If you can get your hands on a copy of Canon's Digital Photo Professional it may include the proper converters that you can use for now.
For EOS utility to run the camera must be connected and running and I'm not sure the P&S cameras are recognized by that utility.
I'm having trouble with G9 CR2 files on Aperture 2.1.2. When I import them they come in at 1:1 aspect ration meaning the preview is forced to fill the preview screen so all images look a little wide and verticals look really, really stretched out.
When I go in and selected Apple -- Camera Default in the adjustments palettes it pops into the proper 4:3 ratio.
Any way to get that as the default? I've tried selected all and hitting the Camera Default but only one image at a time is updated. Driving me crazy

Canon G10 Camera Raw - works sporadically

I downloaded and installed Camera Raw 5.2 in Photoshop CS4, about an hour ago. Since then I have had varied, and it seems random success in opening raw files in Photoshop.
I only loaded a couple of G10 raw files onto my computer [desktop]. Sometimes they open, sometimes they do not, and I get an error messages that reads: Could not complete your request because it is not the right kind of document.
Sometimes I can go through Picasa and when I click on open with and select Photoshop 4, it will open, other times not.
The same thing happens when I try to open the file from Photoshop.
I have restarted the computer several times.
Any thoughts, ideas or help would be appreciated.

Just getting an icon rather than a thumbnail can also be a symptom of ACR being in wrong directory.
Also, you might go to tools/cache/purge cache for xxx folder. Let thumbnails rebuild and see if they show correctly.

Poor quality noise reduction for Canon G10

I recently bought a Canon G10, and I am disappointed at the quality of RAW conversions done by ACR/LR at anything approaching a high ISO. The out-of-camera JPEGs show much superior noise reduction to what I can get from RAW files, no matter how I tweak the noise reduction settings.
At ISO 80-100 both look essentially identical.
At ISO200 JPEGs show less and tighter grain than I can manage with RAW (unless I nuke the details with luminance reduction), but both are still very good.
At ISO400 ACR/LR's RAW conversion starts to fall apart. Chroma NR in RAW is still handled well, the grain size in RAW is much larger than the camera's JPEGs. I need to apply a lot of luminance NR to reduce the RAW grain to match the JPEGs, and when I do that I lose a lot of detail. And even then, the larger grain isn't as attractive as the JPEG.
At ISO800 this problem is even worse. Big ugly blobs abound in the RAW conversion. The JPEGs don't look great, but they're very usable, especially if you're willing to dip the shadows a bit to hide the worst of the noise.
ISO1600 is interesting. The JPEGs don't look great; there's a healthy amount of noise, and NR kills a lot of fine details. But the image is usable for 4x6's or sometimes even an 8x10. But the RAW files are awful! Even cranking chroma NR to 100, there's color noise to be seen. And even with very careful use of luminance NR and sharpening I can't results that are anywhere close to JPEG's level of detail and noise.
I understand that P&S cameras like the G10 are very noisy by DSLR standards and so this might not be a focal point of ACR/LR development, but I'm surprised and disappointed that the JPEG engine in the G10 can do a better job handling noise than ACR/LR. I guess my hope is that ACR/LR will at some point offer improved NR so I can create photos using RAW that look as good as JPEGs straight out of the camera. As it is right now I'm in the unfortunate position of shooting JPEG at high ISO to get usable noise performance. My dilemma is whether to even bother shooting RAW+JPEG when this IQ might be the best I ever get from ACR/LR for the G10.
I suppose my favored solution would be to either implement or license NR technology that matches NeatImage/NoiseNinja/NoiseWare. That feature alone would be worthy of justifying a 3.0 version for me. :)

Jeff, I won't debate that the output from the G10 at ISO800+ is poor. It most certainly is! And I know that simply eliminating the scads of noise in a G10 high ISO shot won't restore the detail the noise killed in the first place. But with every other camera I've used with ACR and LR, the color noise slider eliminates all color noise at or before the "100" setting. So I was surprised when that wasn't possible with the G10.
I don't currently own a camera that puts out an image quite as noisy as the G10 at ISO1600, but what about the A900 at ISO6400?

Both of those are horrifically noisy. Worse than the G10 at ISO1600, I'd say. But those cameras certainly aren't crap. They just offer ISO settings higher than some consider acceptable. But then again, some people consider anything higher than ISO200 on a 5D unacceptable, so it's obviously all relative. Point being, I would expect ACR to do the best job it could for any camera it supports, not just the best job it can do for only some of the cameras it supports.
In any case, I want ACR to be able to remove the color noise from my G10's images, just like it can with my other cameras. I know the images are sub-standard when measured against a DSLR, but at least to my eyes, even very noisy images can look decent in small prints so long as there aren't big color blobs all over the place.
As for the luminance noise, I'm happier to live with that. I'd be happy to eventually pay for a LR upgrade that gives me NR similar to what the high-end third-party apps do, because that feature would make each of my cameras geniunely more useful--and retroactively! But a simpler request it seems is to recalibrate what "100" means for the G10. At least then I could dispense with the JPEGs and still make an 8x10.

Matching video sources: Panasonic DVX 100 and Canon G10

I am trying to match digital video captured on mini-DV from a Panasonic DVX100 with video captured on a Canon G10 digital camera. The G10 footage is a good quality, but looks noticably different, the clips do not blend well. Has anyone tried something like this before, or have any suggestions?

A lot can be accomplished in the 3Way to get what you want, in fact, I would advise you against using Color for this, unless you know it and unless you're looking to establish an image baseline and have Color render new media. Time should have been taken to match the DVX100 to the G10 beforehand on chart like a DSCLabs Chrome du Monde or at least with a Macbeth Color checker.
Find similar shots from each camera, place a marker at each spot. Toggle back and forth between the markers, observe your scopes (the vectorscope, waveform and RGB Parade - ignore the histogram as it's fairly worthless) as they will tell you what to do.
Manipulate away.
Don't know how to read your scopes? There's a section in the manual that quickly gives the highlights of this great skill to know.
If you get in a bind, send me a couple of .tiffs from similar shots of each camera and I'll get you started.

Profile for Canon G10 to simulate Olympus E-3 colors

I want to create a profile for Canon G10 which will simulate Olympus E-3 colors.
I performed the following steps, but the result is very disappointing:
1. Photographed a GretacgMacbeth ColorChecker with a G10 and a E-3, in the same light conditions (Open shade) in RAW.
2. Converted the RAW files to DNG with DNG Converter 5.4, all default settings.
3. Opened the E-3 DNG file in Profile Editor. White balanced by right-click on patch #19. Set Base Profile to E-3 Adobe Standard, Color table 6500K, 'Both color tables'.
4. Set 18 Control Points, one on each color patch, #1 to #18. Wrote down the HSL values for each.
5. Closed the E-3 file and cleared everything.
6. Opened the G10 DNG file in Profile Editor. White balanced by right-click on patch #19. Set Base Profile to G10 Camera Standard, Color table 6500K, 'Both color tables'.
4. Set 18 Control Points, one on each color patch, #1 to #18. Wrote down the HSL values for each.
7. Noted the numeric difference between the HSL values for each patch in the G10 file, vs the E-3 file.
8. Corrected the HSL values for each control point, by the numeric difference between the two files.
9. Saved and exported with a new name.
Obviously I did something wrong, because the result is BAD!
I'll appreciate it if someone could help and point me in the right direction.

I'd like to add two observations about my above experiment:
1. If I change the values of a Control Point using the sliders or the point on the color wheel, the preview changes, but much less than the change of the slider. Say, I change the H slider to -10, the change in the preview is only -2, or so. Is that how it should be?
2. If I hover with the cursor over a color patch in the ColorChecker preview the values change, probably due to noise, and it's difficult to decide which is the correct point. I didn't find an option, like in Photoshop, to set the sampling size so the value is an average of several pixels in all directions.
