Canon Gl-1 import pixelated

Greetings,
I have searched these forums, among others, and cannot find a solution to my problem.
I have a canon gl-1 with which i am importing footage.  On both 16:9 and 4:3 settings I am encountering pixelated footage after capture.
I have sequence settings set to (what i think) is the appropriate format:
For editing with IEEE1394 (FireWire/i.LINK) DV equipment.
     Standard NTSC video (4:3 interlaced).
     48kHz (16 bit) audio.
     Drop-Frame Timecode numbering.
     General
    Editing mode: DV NTSC
   Timebase: 29.97fps
   Video Settings
   Frame size: 720h 480v (0.9091)
   Frame rate: 29.97 frames/second
Pixel Aspect Ratio: D1/DV NTSC (0.9091)
   Fields: Lower Field First
Even in the capture preview, footage appears clean as it does on the LCD screen of the camera, filmed in good lighting.  Once I have complete capturing and x-out of the box, both the preview of the clips, as well as once they have been added to the timeline, appear pixelated, destroying the quality of the video.
Is my Indeterminate Media Timebase in Preferences>Media set wrong? (I have tried both 30fps, and 29.97 drop frame, the latter of which is what the camera shoots in.)
What is more annoying is that I have not tampered with settings and have had clean imports just a week ago.
Any advice would be extremely appreciated.
P.S.  I would like to shoot in 16:9 for widescreen.

ALSO. I am using CS4 on a Dell XPS with windows vista installed.  Computer is a high end gaming computer and has ample video capability/RAM/Hard drive space.

You should take a look at iView Media or its Pro version. It is a cross-platform (Mac and Windows) program that is free of some of the stultifying limitations of iPhoto. For example, you can create multiple catalogs and you can easily catalog media (not just photos) that are not on the current disk, like media stored on CDs. It has very flexible cataloging features.
If they have not changed their licensing, you can buy one license to run both the Mac and PC version for one price. You can make one catalog and easily pass it between a Mac and PC with no translation or confusion. This would be much easier than trying to make it work with iPhoto and some other Windows program.
If you were to go the iView route, you would have to "sync" the data back to the photos so that they carry your keyword etc. data with them to other apps. I don't know if iPhoto embeds that info back to the photos, or if it stays in the iPhoto database only.
Photoshop Elements 4 is great on Windows, but the Mac version of Elements does not include the cataloging feature because it integrates with iPhoto. I'm not sure how smooth that all works.

  • New Canon T2i images import but do not show up in library

I imported the first images from a new Canon T2i into iPhoto. The images show up in the "Last Import" folder but when I click on the "Photos" folder in the library they are not there. If I import more pictures from another source the images are no longer in the Last Import folder and I can't find them anywhere.  I tried importing a random image and it shows up in both the Last Import folder and the Photos folder. I even went and re-imported them from a back up folder on my hard drive and the same thing happens.
    Any help would be appreciated.
    Thank you.
    Jeff

If it's in the Last ImPort then it's in the Library somewhere.  Usually this is caused by the dates on the camera being off or a different Sort (View Menu) being chosen.
In Last Import right click on a photo and choose 'Show Event'...

  • Canon CR2 RAW import issue

I just got a Canon 7D and I shoot in RAW, which with this model is CR2. I can see the pics fine in finder and I can open them in Photoshop CS4, but not in iPhoto. I use iPhoto to organize all of my pictures and would love to keep it that way.
Is iPhoto 8.1 incapable of recognizing the CR2 format?
    Gracias

    Hi TD,
sorry for late reply - I was out a couple of days. My latest version of Digital Camera Raw update is 2.6. Even on the apple downloads page (http://www.apple.com/downloads/macosx/apple/applicationupdates/indexabc3.html) I don't see a 2.7 version nor would auto-update propose a missing update. Am I missing something here?
Yes, I am importing directly from my camera using USB cable via USB hub.

  • Canon Powershot SD1100, importing videos freezes iPhoto 08?

    To Group:
I recently got a new puppy and have been taking quite a few short video clips with my Canon SD1100, however when I try to import them into iPhoto 08 the application just freezes and eventually closes. Upon reloading iPhoto it says that X number of photos/videos were not imported, do I want to import them now and when I say YES the same thing happens again. If I say NO it puts them in a a folder named iPhoto Library Recovered Photos_X. I've noticed it doesn't happen on all videos, just rather large ones (~300MB). I've got all the latest updates installed. Any ideas?
    Thank you.

    Welcome to the Apple Discussions.
iPhoto will baulk at importing larger files directly from the camera. The work around is to move the files from the camera to desktop using Image Capture and then import them to iPhoto.

  • Canon FS10 and importing into FCE

I have a Canon FS10 and want to import the footage but can't figure out which Easy Setup setting to use. I can import in iMovie 08 easily, but do not want to go through the hassle of two programs.
Has anyone used any of the Canon FS line with FCE?
    Please help.
    Brett

I bought the Canon HF10 - loved it and then was only able to download into iMovie. Being a fan and active user of FCE, I bit the bullet and upgraded from 3.0 to 4.0. Went to the Caymans came home to download using 4.0 and the Log and Transfer function failed to capture the clips as promised. Then I read that I needed to install the update to FCE 4.0.1. I did the update and wallah the import using the Log and Transfer worked. But a few cautions - its slow transfer, I miss firewire. Second, you have to wakeup the camera connection to the Mac, I found command+8, woke it up and the clips showed up in the window. I ignored all the error messages about the directory structure.

  • Canon HFS10/100 import procedure?

    Hi,
I'm using Final Cut 6.0.6 and I'm trying to learn to import from a Canon SD card-based camcorder (the HFS100). I understand I'm supposed to use Log & Transfer, but I'm a bit unclear about the details... I opened Log and Transfer with the camera connected and nothing happened, I was unable to choose any folders or files. But then a few minutes later I noticed the files from the canon were indeed in the log and transfer window. Is there a specific power-on/opening order?
Also the 'media start' column is at 00:00:00 for all of the clips.
I'd like to learn the best way to import, preserving all meta information if possible and get a good workflow going with this great program and this camera
    tips appreciated,
    Chris

Because AVCHD is a recording and a delivery format, not an editing format. AVCHD was created to capture the highest picture quality in the smallest files possible. It is very, very, very difficult to edit in because of the way the file is internally structured to save space. These forums contain countless posts from people attempting to edit directly in AVCHD, they report sluggish, frustrating performance and constant rendering.
When you ingest your files and have them converted to Pro Res, they are made edit friendly. Also the quality of Pro Res exceeds AVCHD so there is no degradation of your video. The only down side is a Pro Res file is much larger than the AVCHD file, it has to be to be edit capable - so it takes up more disc space than the original AVCHD file.
The goal of that camcorder manufacturer was to use a file system that gave people a high quality image with lots of storage space on the camera, they were not concerned with people editing the clips. Apple has stepped up and created this very convenient system where the files are automatically converted for the user on ingest so that the editing process can be much easier, and the resulting edits are in a format that also make creating DVDs, etc. much easier.
    Hope this helps.

  • Canon EOS 7D import video

    Hello,
I've recorded some HD video with my Canon EOS 7D. i like to import the video in iMovie 11 but it does not recognize the camera for import.
Does anybody know what to do about this?
    Thank you in advance
    Edgar

Import -> Movies then going to the Cameras file system does not work?
Also shoot 30 frames a second as iMovie does not work with 1080p60 or 720p60 (Well you can import 720p60 but it will turn it to 30fps)

  • Canon Vixia HF200 Import Trouble

    Hi there,
I'm using the trial version of Adobe Premeire (with intention to purchase in the near future) to import from a Canon Vixia HF200.  The HF200 uses the AVCHD format, written as MFX files.  I shot at the highest quality afforded me by my camera (MXP it's called) at 24 frames per second.
Here's the problem: when I import the MXF files into Premeire, they're imported as video ONLY, without any audio.  However, when I open up the MXF files in VLC or Windows Media Player, they play with audio.  How come Premiere is not recognizing/not importing the audio tracks?  How can I fix this?  Help!
    Thanks,
    Matthew

In the "small" print on the download page it says what is NOT in the trial... repeated here

  • Is there an alternative to Canon CameraWindow to import photos and rename the files to include shooting date?

I've used Canon's CameraWindow software for years to import large quantities of photos direct from my SD card, specifically because it renames the files based on date taken and nicely orgnizes them into folders.  I save those to an external HD and import them to my iphoto library.  Now after moving to Lion, CameraWindow isn't compatible because it's a PowerPC app I guess.  I can't find any update via Canon.  I don't really use any of the other EOS Utilities, I just want to be able to rename those files by dates, which is why I don't use iphoto to import and I've seen that suggested in other places.  I'm happy to abandon Canon software all together if there is an alternative out there.  Thanks for any suggestions!

Most professional photo management software can batch-rename files using metadata such as date, and can organize into date folders on import. I know that Adobe Lightroom and the Photo Downloader in Adobe Bridge can do this, and I think Apple Aperture and PhaseOne MediaPro can too. All of these programs are maintained for OS X compatibility better than Canon and Nikon software are.
Have you looked at Canon's camera software page? They have Canon software that works with Lion and later, the only question is whether the software for your specific camera has been updated.

  • CS6 Canon 5DmkII Footage looks pixelated

    Hi,
I've recently imported some night time footage using the 5D and when viewed on the timeline it is pixellated and is generally low quality.  Played back in windows media player it is perfectly fine.
I have searched high and low for a solution to this but can't find anything that will work.  I thought Premiere Pro 6 supported H264??
Any help would be much appreciated in how to solve the problem.

On a 1600 x 900 monitor the source and program monitors would typically occupy around 25% each of the screen estate, meaning around 400 x 225 for 1920 x 1080 source material. Degradation is expected, especially with on-board graphics from Intel.
To be honest, it is about your laptop, I expect. It is slower than molasses in winter and may earn the top ranking score in the Benchmark Results, in terms of the highest rank and the highest time, but when looking at results, we tends to consider lower as better, not higher.

  • Canon 7D and importing photos.

I got a new Canon 7D and when I import the photos it says they are damaged.  When I enter the photos into iPhoto they download fine.  Memory cards from other cameras still download fine into light room. Can somenoe help me figure out the problem.

What version of Lightroom are you using?
What types of files are you trying to import: JPEG? CR2?
How are you importing? Are you reading from the camera or from a card reader?

  • Problems with Canon HF100 (NTSC) importing into imovie

I know this question has been asked, but nothing I have tried has worked. I have a Canon HF100 and when I try to import my files (mts) into imovie 08 I get a message that says, "There was a problem with - out of - of your clips. Check your clips." or something to this affect. While it looks like they've imported, they are nowhere to be found in the event. What am I doing wrong? I have VoltaicHD which worked for the first clips but now everything I try to convert "fails". Please help.

hey there tomaswk, welcom to Discussions.
    1) when importing HDV, iMovie/FCE HD converts it on the fly to A.I.C.-Apple Intermediate Codec. you'll need @ least 2 GB of RAM to approach realtime ingest to your MBP. i have 2.5 GB on my DP G5.
    2) the conversion also results in file sizes about 4 times the size of SD video. plenty of RAM is a necessity for HDV in iMovie or FCE HD. sounds like the partition could be the culprit. maybe get an external FireWire HDD for your HDV iMovies.
    good luck.

  • Canon T1i video importing problem

Hi folks. I'm trying to import Canon T1i clips into PP CS5, but it either doesn't want to add audio, or it puts it in Audio track 4. My Canon 1Dm4 does not do this. What am I doing wrong?
    Thanks

    Hi btrippy,
You can check the media information whether it is stereo or mono and some other information through media info software.
    http://mediainfo.sourceforge.net/en/Download
Check as per Windows or Mac.
If windows check the file system 32 bit or 64 bit as per your system and then you need to select the GUI v0.7.34 (without installer)
Download and install the software and then import one of your video clips and then click on VIEW menu and then select TREE to check the information.

  • Canon 400D RAW import issue

I have recently upgraded to Vista and Lightroom 3.1 and now I am having a problem importing RAW files directly from my canon 400D. I have set the auto importer to recognize a memory card, and lightroom starts when I activate my camera, but for some reason it tells me that there are no files to import. This is the same if I manually select my 400D's CF folder. I can see the files in windows explorer, but Lightroom will no longer recognize them.
Adobe Photo downloader lightroom 3.0 is running and I have no problem importing Photos once I have copied the files from the CF card to a hard drive manually, but it really is a pain not to be able so select individual RAW files or batches through lightroom. I do not have a memory card reader!
All of these processes were functioning with Lightroom 2.0.
Anyone know of a fix or a workaround?

Hahaha, yeah, you are right, I was writing the last post in a rush before leaving the house......I do indeed mean 1.2 an 1.3...and as stated I do not have a card reader, and to be honest I really dont think I should have to purchase another piece of hardware (no matter how cheap) to have this software run correctly.
Thank you for your reply, but I am still looking for a fix or workaround to download directly from the camera. This is something that I have had work before. Are Adobe aware of this, is there any fix planned?
