Canon GL2 is not recognized by Final Cut Express

I am trying to capture from my Canon GL2. I hook up the fire wire but neither I-Movie or Final Cut Express seem to recognize the connection.
Any Suggestions?

Hi
My general list on this.
*NO CAMERA or A/D-box*
Cable
• Are You sure that You are using the FireWire Cable - USB-Cable will not work for miniDV tape Cameras
FireWire - Sure not using the accompany USB-Cable but bought a 4-pin to 6-pin (or 9-pin) FW one ?
• Test another FW-Cable *very often the problem maker*.
Camera
• Test Your Camera on another Mac so that DV-in still works OK
• Toogle in iMovie pref. Play-back via Camera (on<->off some times)
• Some Cameras has a Menu where You must select DV-out to get it to work
• Camera connected to "charger" (mains adaptor) - not just on battery
• Camera set in Playback mode - NOT Recording mode
Does Your Camera work on another Mac ?
Sorry to say it is to easy to turn the 6-pin end of the FW-cable 180 deg wrong.
This is lethal to the A/D-chip in the Camera = needs an expensive repair.
(Hard to find out - else than import/export to another Mac ceased to work
everything else is OK eg recording and playback to TV)
A/D-box
• Is the dip-switches set right ?
• Set to same standard as recorded/editing eg NTSC 29.97fps or PAL 25fps
• Try resetting it
Connections
• Daisy Chaining most often doesn’t work (some unique cases - it’s the only way that work (some Canon Cameras ?))
Try to avoid connecting Camera <--> external HD <--> Mac but import directly to the Mac then move
the Movie project to dedicated external hard disk.
• FireWire-port - Can be re-setted by - Turn off Mac and disconnecting Mac from Mains/Power for 20-30 minutes
Mac
• Free space on internal (start-up) hard disk ? Please specify the amount of free space.
(Other hard disks don't count)
I go for a minmum of 25Gb free space for 4x3 SD Video - and my guess is 5 times more for 16x9 HD ones
after material is imported and edited.
• Does Your Mac have a FireWire Port
• White MacBooks - don't
• MacBook-Air - don't
if not then a few Mac’s has a PCM-CIA slot and there are FW-Cards that makes a FW-port this way
else - NO SOLUTION
Only option as I get it is either
• Use another Mac to Capture material (to an external USB2 - Mac OS Extended formatted hard disk - or -
• Change to another Camera that can be used with Your Mac (no there are no miniDV tape Cameras that can)
• If Your Mac-Book has a PCM-CIA Card place - then there are FW-port-Cards and then
You can import via this - but I've not seen this on more modern Macs. My PowerBook G4
has one and this FW-Card-port works greatly.
SoftWare
• Delete iMovie pref file may help sometimes. I rather start a new account, log into this and have a re-try.
• Any strange Plug-ins into QuickTime as Perian etc ? Remove and try again.
• FileVault is off ? (hopefully)
• Screen Saver - OFF
• Energy Saver - OFF
Using WHAT versions ? .
• Mac OS - X.5.4 ?
• QuickTime version ? (This is the heart in both iMovie and FinalCut)
• iMovie’08 (7.1.?), 09 or 11 ?
• iMovie HD 6 (6.0.4/3) ?
*Other ways to import Your miniDV tape*
• Use another Camera. There where tape play-back stations from SONY
but they costed about 2-4 times a normal miniDV Camera.
• If Your Camera works on another Mac. Make an iMovie movie project here and move it
over to Your Mac via an external hard disk.
(HAS TO BE Mac OS Extended formatted - USB/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange WILL NOT DO)
(Should be a FireWire one - USB/USB2 performs badly)
from LKN 1935.
Hi Bengt W, I tried it all, but nothing worked. Your answer has been helpfull insofar as all the different trials led to the conclusion that there was something wrong with my iMovie software. I therefore threw everything away and reinstalled iMovie from the HD. After that the exportation of DV videos (there has not been any problem with HDV videos) to my Sony camcorders worked properly as it did before. Thank you. LKN 1935
from Karsten.
in addition to Bengt's excellent '9 yards of advice' ..
camera set to 'Play' , not rec/computer/etc.?
camera not on battery, but power-line?
did your Mac 'recognize' this camera before...?
a technical check.
connect camera, on, playback, fw-connected...
click on the Blue Apple, upper left of your screen ..
choose 'About../More..
under Firewire.. what do you read..?
More
• FileVault - Secure that it’s turned off
• Network storage - DOESN’T WORK
• Where did You store/capture/import Your project ?
External USB hard disk = Bad Choise / FireWire = Good
If so it has to be Mac OS Extended formatted
----> UNIX/DOS/FAT32/Mac OS Exchange is NOT Working for VIDEO !

Thanks for all your suggestions. What I learned is that I had a software problem. I had something called "Nikon Transfer" on my Mac that was recognizing my Canon camcorder as a still camera and was preventing iMovie from working properly. After uninstalling Nikon Transfer and doing a reboot, everything worked great.
I never liked the Nikon Transfer software anyway--I guess I'll get a cheap card reader and use that to transfer photos in the future.
*No Camera or bad import*
• USB hard disk
• Network storage
• File Vault is on

if you have adobe cs3 or 4 and have the adobe bridge on close that
or no firewire will work
see if that halps

The problem was the external backup hard drive that is connected, you need to disconect the external drive before the mac can see the video camera.

Maybe your problems is solved in the meantime, but for all others this might help as I had the same problem, also have the Sony HDR-HC7, but the 7e (Europe, PAL). I found this link today and it works perfectly
//support.sony-europe.com/tutorials/dime/videotransfer/vtransfer.aspx site=odwenGB&sec=DVH&m=HDR-HC7E
What I exactly did.- put camera in play mode - open guide - choose connection guide - choose comp./printer (where to transfer movie to) - select connection.- i-link (on my camera) but equal to firewire - OK - choose HDV - choose NO for conversion of i.link.
Settings are shown then (VCR HDV/DV.- HDV and i.link-conv..- OFF), press OK, OK, END.
Switch camera off. Connect firewire cable to camera & Mac. Switch camera on, in play/edit mode.
Open i-movie, choose import from camera. On screen below the camera connection is shown.- DV (HDV). Now you can import, automatically or manually.
This worked perfectly for me. Took me 2 days to find out. Could not find any clear thread explaining what I had to do on the camera and the manual was not clear either.

  • Canon HV10 Not Recognized By Final Cut Express HD

Final Cut Express will not initialize my new HV10. iMovie has no problem downloading so I do not believe it is my computer, a Dual 2.3 GHz Power PC. Anyone know if this a problem with the software?
    G5   Mac OS X (10.4.6)

    Not only Canon HV10,
my Sony HCR-HC3E also has this problem.
The quality of footage after capture is very poor.
When I use iMovie to capture the footage,
iMovie show that it is using the codec 1080i25.
Final Cut Express HD has not provide this codec,
    only has 1080i50 and 1080i60.
I have ask about this, the feedback is that there is no
    codec that call 1080i25.
    How can I do?

  • Panasonic NV-GS400 not recognized by Final Cut Express

I'm using a new Mac Pro with OSX 10.5.6, Quicktime Player 7.6 and Final Cut Express 4.0.1. After trying various settings in Easy Setup FCE still refuses to see my Panasonic camera NV-GS400. I'd be grateful for any advice that would solve this.

Trying lots of settings is a bad idea. There is only one correct setting for your media.
First, trash your preferences and repair permissions.
    http://www.fcpbook.com/Misc1.html
Connect to the rear FireWire port of the computer. What other devices are connected to the computer? Turn on the camera in playback mode. Launch the application. Set the correct settings, some flavor of DV NTSC. Is the camera recognized by the application? If not do not go further. Check to see if it recognized in system profiler. If not, report back.

  • Canon EOS Movie Plugin-E1 not recognized in Final Cut Pro 10.0.7

Canon EOS Movie Plugin-E1 not recognized in Final Cut Pro 10.0.7
I just installed the new version of final cut pro 10 and the canon plugin-E1 version 1.4 for the canon 5D mk III but after starting final cut pro I can not find the Log and transfer button., with the result I cannot import my files.
Is there a solution for this problem.

There is no L&T function in FCPX.
The import media dialogue window does what you want.
OS versions later than 10.6 should be fine importing Canon DSLRs.

  • Does anyone have experience with using a Canon Vixia HF M52 Camcorder with Final Cut Express?

I'm looking to purchase a new camcorder that is compatible with my Mac OS X (10.6.8) that will work well with Final Cut Express 4.0.1  I have downloaded the camcorder support info from Final Cut Express that list many capital camcorders.  I've used Sony tape based camcorders in the past.  I'm looking for High Definition.  I can stick with a tape based camcorder, but thought I would look at the Canon Vixia HF M52 as an alternative, which is listed as compatible.  I would like to download directly from the camera to FCE.  I film in the wilderness, like having an optical zoom of 20 or greater (yes, I use a small tripod). Does anyone have experience with the Canon Vixia?  And if not, but you really like another camcorder that you can recommend, what is it?

The Vixia HF M52 is an AVCHD camcorder and should work perfectly fine with Final Cut Express 4 (4.0.1).
The published "camcorder support list" has never been up to date and I would not take it to be a definitive list of compatible camcorders.
One note, however, the Vixia HF M52 supports a number of different shooting modes.  I suggest sticking with the AVCHD 1920 x 1080i / 60 fps mode for use with FCE.   FCE does not support progressive modes except in 720p25/30 (which the M52 does not seem to shoot anyway); nor does FCE support any 24 fps modes.

  • Transitions and dragging files not working in Final Cut Express 4

Although this topic has been gathering dust in these archives for a while, my problem differs in that there's plenty of room either side of the edit point. So no need for "handles" either side.
Today I installed Final Cut Express 4 on my swanky new MacBook Pro which I am stroking as I write. Ooh, baby, brushed aluminium ...
First, in the Browser, I've set up a "bin" but I am unable to drag any of the four short clips that I've imported from my Nokia 5800 phone. Yet it has worked perfectly in iMovie (the good one, the one with the Timeline).
Why, when I click on a clip, can I not grab it in order to drag it to the bin?
Neither will it let me drag any of the transition icons into place as is done in the tutorial. But when I click on the edit, it drops a brown vertical that looks like it could be the transition icon (I want the cross dissolve at about 2 seconds). I tried several transitions but nothing seems to be showing up in the preview canvas.
How do I drag the transition icon into place?
Once success, though. I used the razor blade to get rid of a few frames, then shift and delete so the whole thing lifts out with the audio — that worked properly. But the edit is a straight cut, no dissolve.
There was a red line that told me something needed rendering, so I rendered "both". Sequence, render all, "both". But when I click on the edit I get another red horizontal render line above it. That's happened several times.
A window with browser and canvas appeared, reading Trim Edit, (left viewer side) Outgoing clip (vid name) 00:00:40:19 and 00:00:41:18, then (right canvas side) Incoming clip 00:01:10:24 and 00:00:50:15. There's also a button reading Track VI but I have no idea what that is. I've tried sliding things but I can't get timings that look like a second to the left of the edit point, and a second to the right, meaning they overlap by two seconds.
The window had three sets of controls, one under the viewer "Outgoing Clip", a second under the right hand canvas "Incoming Clip". The middle one plays the canvas screen as Previewing Edit. Again, we get to the transition and it's a basic cut.
    Help! What's going wrong?

"imported from my Nokia 5800 phone."
This material will not work with FCE. It needs to be converted to a format that is compatible with FCE. You can probably use MPEG Streamclip to do this.
    Transitions: http://www.fcpbook.com/Effects1.html
Please confirm that you have handles available on your media to create the overlap for the transition.
Rendering: Your material is not compatible with FCE.

  • Canon EOS Movie Plugin not recognized in Final Cut Pro 6

    Hi Everyone...
I have a big problem installing canon eos movie plugin to Final Cut Pro 6. I have MAC OSX 10.5.8. After installing the software [EOS MOVIE Plugin-E1 for Final Cut Pro Ver1.2]. I open up Final Cut Pro and the final cut pro plugin is not shown in the Log and Transfer. [Image of problem down below].  I've tried reinstalling. Re: Trash and Restore FCP 6 Preference Files
by Alan Smith on Sep 18, 2008 at 8:20:00 am
There are four files to trash when trying to trash the preferences.
    workstation>Mac HD>Users>Workstation>Library>Preferences>com.apple.FinalCutPro.plist
workstation>Mac HD>Users>Workstation>Library>Preferences>Final Cut Pro User Data>Final Cut Pro 6.0 Prefs
workstation>Mac HD>Users>Workstation>Library>Preferences>Final Cut Pro User Data>Final Cut ProObj Cache
workstation>Mac HD>Users>Workstation>Library>Preferences>Final Cut Pro User Data>Final Cut ProProf Cache
When you delete these files and restart FCP each of these will be rebuilt.

  • Soundtrack will not work with Final Cut Express 4.0.1

Just spoke to the tech guy, he was explicit in saying that Apple has discontinued Soundtrack for FCE. It will never be added, final, that's it. Options given 1) Buy another software that works or 2) Use Garageband. No point in complaining any more as they will just log your complaint and that's it. This will never been fixed by them was what he said.

Your comments are perfectly fine but Apple should never have called FCE 4.0 an upgrade as it clearly stats on the box "Upgrade Requires any previous version". I am sorry but Apple is not above laws for consumers in other countries. This upgrade is linked to previous FCE applications and therefore should have included all previous components purchased whether they included an upgrade or not. I do not have the extra money to be buying more software that is why I bought the upgrade and not FCS. Soundtrack was bundled with FCE 3.5 on the same disk. Live Type was also bundled in that package as well. They do have the right to alter their products, but they don't have the right to promote the upgrade to users with older versions without explaining clearly in their advertising of the product that a vital part is no longer available. Might seem like a small issue to you, but Apple software costs a lot more here than it does where you live.

  • Anybody use Canon ZR950 with Mac Laptop and Final Cut Express

I just bought a Canon ZR950 Mini-DV camera and have been eyeing up a new MacBook Pro for editing video of my new baby (12 days to go). I'm wondering if anybody has had success with that model camera and FCE. Would I movie do the trick or is FCE that much better?
Also - would the 256mb video card model w/ the 15" display be okay?
Any suggestions or recommendations would be greatly appreciated.
    Thanks for your time!!!!

I have my old Mac listed as my current computer (I use it to record music as it does exactly what I need). I've been looking at the new MacBook pro - wouldn't that work?
If not - which new Mac should I buy?

  • Final Cut Express 4 export

I am pretty frusturated because I have scoured the internet for answers so far, I was wondering if anyone could help.
I am doing a video using my Canon Rebel T2i, and editing in Final Cut Express HD 4
I import the footage, and convert the footage in MPEG Streamclip to the following settings:
    Apple Intermediate Codec
    100% quality
    1920x1080 unscaled
I then put the footage into Final Cut Express, and everything looks great in the viewer etc.
When I go to export, I use the following settings as many sites have said to do.
    H.264
    Best Quality
    Automatic Frame Rate
    Automatic Bit Rate
    No Filters
    1920x1080
    Deinterlace Source Video Checked
With these settings, the export looks really grainy etc. compared to the imported AIC files.
If anyone could help, that would be great!

Have you tried to not use the "Using Quicktime Conversion" and just the "Quicktime Movie"?

  • HDV Timecode Issue/Workaround for Final Cut Express?

I have a Canon HV20 1080i HD Camera with Final Cut Express 4 HD. When trying to capture HDV video Final Cut (and iMovie) likes to break up the video into random clips instead of the single video that I would like it to be so I can manually edit the file like normal DV video. I understand the reason is because of no valid timecode data coming over Firewire from the camera. Is there a workaround to get this working?

The iMovie 08 clips have names like "clip-2007-08-01 12;41;53.mov" and are stored in folders grouped by dates/events. The date on the clips' files is the date you transferred them to the disk but the filename (above) is when the camera recorded the tape. You can import these files into FCE and the clip names inherit the file names.
The "properties" of the clip as shown in FCE shows the files' modification dates/times (creation time in this case) -- not the info from the tape. I think that's the case with material captured in FCE 3.5 but I haven't captured anything directly into FCE 4 to compare.
So regarding an answer for your 'home movies', the clips names will start out with the date it was taken but the properties shows the date you transferred the tape to the computer. (Sorry if I'm being redundant here.)
Regarding the quality, the FCE project is 1080i and retains the quality you captured. I have no experience exporting it to MPEG4 for a PC. YMMV. There are a bunch of options upon export. I just told it to generate 1080 at the original FPS and 1024kbps (just a number I picked). It think it said an eight minute video is going to be 100meg and take an hour to produce on my iMac. (A quick calculation tells me the size may be off by a factor of two.) The Quicktime forum may be a better place to ask this question.

  • Selling my "used" Final Cut Express HD

    Hello,
I am going to buy "Final Cut Pro X". Therefore I do not need my "Final Cut Express HD" anymore. I want to sell it including the licence. Can I do that? And isn't the licence registrated to my name? So how can a switch to a new owner be done?
Edit: No need to answer - I already found the answer here in the community.

Yes I'll make sure it sell it to someone academically eligible.
Do I need to de-authorize it (or anything like that)? Or simply uninstall it?

  • Final Cut Express 4.0.1 bug

    Hello
Forgive me for my English language, I translated with Google Translate French into English ...
My problem: I have Final Cut Express 4.0.1, but there is a big bug! Sometimes hi just blend films is that the images are from the beginning to the end and the images of the end, are beginning ...
In addition to the keyboard shortcuts do not work all: The only people who are still walking in-i,-o for out, - space,-j-k-l to play. Others only work sometimes. The shortcut apple-q to quit Final Cut Express only works +/- once a month. And apple-c, apple-v and apple-x to copy / paste / cut never work. Furthermore, the customized presentation is scheduled, as it is in the menu bar in "window" between "sort" the choice "a custom layout" and "custom layout 2", but there is nowhere in implementing a button to save this presentation ...
Since there are throughout the web of people who have the same problem and there are people like yourself who do not have the same problem, but the same version as me, I think it is not a feature that is available in Final Cut Express, but in PRO. Moreover, all functions that do that on Final Cut Pro, are not displayed in Final Cut Express and custom layout function is displayed, so it's a programming error or something like that.
I asked for assistance on site programming and mac, but now they could not help myself. I also sent a half year ago, a message to Apple Final Cut Express section, but that they did not ("yet") responded.
    *Thank you*

Double-click the generator clip in the Timeline to load it into the Viewer. In the Duration window, change the duration to whatever you want. Go back to the Timeline and drag the right edge of the clip to fill the duration you entered.
Alternatively you can copy and paste the clip end-to-end to fill the same duration.

  • Final Cut Express serial number

I have used Final Cut Express for two years. I just upgraded to Leopard. Now when I try to open up Final Cut Express I get a request for info about FCE licensing. They want name etc and serial # of Final Cut Express that is located on front page of original software booklet. I do not seem to have that
book nor the serial number. Computer will not continue on with out that information. I can not open
up Final Cut Express. Appreciate any suggestions.

    Dean,
In encountered a similar problem after the main logic board was replaced in my iMac. I was unable to locate my original serial number. Since I had bought the iMac from Apple with FCE pre-installed, they were able to generate a new serial number for me. I now have that number saved in at least four places...in a text file on the computer...in the manual...on the original disc package...and on the update disc package.
