Canon HD Camcorder HF10 got suddenly lost in iMovie

I was using my camcorder with imovie now the latest years. But since last week it is not visible in imovie any longer.
I was importing files the week before but suddenly, by clicking on the camera symbol only the isight camera is available.
In the finder the CANON camera is visible also in the System informations.
I'm using OSX mountain lion and iMovie 09. I checked in the iMac Software installations that there was an OSX Update on 19.10.2012  10.8.2. I do not know if this has something to do with iMovie but afterwards it didn't work any more.
Yesterday I updated iMovie to '11 in the hope that it works again, but didn't.
Are there any tips out there what I can do more to see my camcorder again in imovie?
Thanks in advance
Roland

I use a SDHC-card based AVCHD camcorder from Panasonic with iMovie 08 and it is very satisfactory. The hard disk camcorders work, too, but I was nervous about crashing the hard disk.
Here is a link for supported camcorders...
http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306171
The Canon HG10 is on the list as supported.
Also, as previous poster said, you need intel chip for AVCHD unless you use a workaround like Voltaic.
I like AVCHD because I can store my original HiDef footage in a compressed format through disk images.
iMovie 08 stores the working file in AIC (uncompressed) so you will likely need a large external firewire drive. I use the 1TB Western Digital MyBook Studio Edition for this. This way, you can have all your footage available in your events library. Firewire drives are ridiculously cheap these days.
When your movie is finished, it is easy to share to Apple TV. Easiest way is to share with iTunes in LARGE format. Then, in iTunes, go into Apple TV and put a check next to this new movie, and iTunes will Sync to your ATV in the background. Takes less than a minute to sync a 5 minute movie.

  • Help needed: How to import video from Canon Legria Camcorder FS306?

    Dear all,
After happily purchasing Canon Legria Camcorder FS306, I realise that my IMOVIE HD could not detect the camcorder when connected to my Macbook pro.
    Have 2 questions here:
    1. Is it impossible for IMovie HD to detect newer camcorders? Should I then upgrade to IMOVIE09?
    2. Currently, Canon Legria Camcorder FS306 is not listed as 1 of the supported camcorders for IMOVIE09. It is one of the newer models. Is IMOVIE09 able to import video from this camcorder now? Or in the near future? Or it may never be supported?
    Tks!
    Gam

You would need imovie 09 to use this camcorder.
This camcorder is not on the iMovie 09 supported list. However, every Canon camcorder since 2008 has supported iMovie 08 and 09, so odds are good that this one will, too. Odds are good that it works right now. IF you want to know for sure, call Canon. ....or take your camera to an Apple Store and hook it up.
It might be possible to do some manual conversions and continue to use iMovie 6. For example, you could try converting the MPEG2 files to DV using a tool like MPEG Streamclip. You would also need the $20 Apple QuickTime MPEG2 Playback Component. I find iMovie 09 to be a much better editor, but if you are comfortable with iMovie 06, this might be worth a try for you.

  • IMAC doesn't recognize my Canon GL2 camcorder any longer ?

I am using a 24 inch Imac with a processor 2.16GHZ intel core 2 Duo running Tiger 10.4.10.
I am using Final Cut Pro version 5.1.4
Up to the present time I've been able to use my Canon GL2 Camcorder for downloading. Suddenly, for no apparent reason, my Imac doesn't boot up properly when I have the Canon turned on. My 3 external drives don't show up on my desk top unless I turn off the Canon camcorder. Obviously, when I launch Final Cut Pro and attempt to log and capture, the viewer comes up with the message, "No Communication" Interestingly enough, when I connect my Panasonic DVX 100B camcorder to my Imac,it works perfectly for downloading. In addition, I have the exact same Imac in a 20 inch screen running the exact same operating system and exact same version of FCP. My Canon GL2 works perfect on this Imac. Can anyone help me solve this problem. I would be forever grateful.
    Henri

Did you have other devices connected to your old iMac while capturing? If not that's why it was working.
One of my cameras is a Canon and besides MacPro and MBP I have also an old iMac. It never worked with external drives connected for the very reason I explained in the link I sent to you.
Canon FW cameras are just likely to mess up with other FW connections on the same FW bus.
    Best,
    G.

  • My iPhone 3G has suddenly lost vibration and sound/ringtones(also does not change aspect when tilted). An incoming phone call can be answered but no sound is heard from the speakers9even though the caller can hear what I am saying). Any ideas?

My 3G iPhone has suddenly lost all sound and vibration, it has also lost the "tilt" capability on-screen. An incoming call is registered without a sound, however, the caller can hear everything being said by me(whilst I hear nothing at all from his/her call).
    Any suggestions??

    *Update*
I thought I had found the offending 'app' namely "Songpop."
I regularly use "Songpop" on my phone late at night via my wifi connection.
All enteries on my phonebill are at midnight (even though I have a data allowance it was excluded from allowance). I switched 3G off on Friday, played "Songpop" at midnight and at the exact time I got a "Server Error" message.
I posted a message on the "Songpop" support forum. At first they said this was a problem relating to my ISP.
I have spoken to my ISP and asked if there are connection drops at the time I have been billed (ie to establish if my wifi dropped and 3G kicked in without my knowledge) and have been advised that there aren't any connection drops at that time.
"Songpop" have now responded that "This is an issue to take up with Apple Support"  see: http://support.songpop.fm/songpop/topics/playing_songpop_on_phone_via_wifi_but_i ncurring_download_data_charges_for_3g_useage?utm_content=topic_link&utm_medium=e mail&utm_source=reply_notification
Hopefully someone at Apple can respond ....

  • HT1349 I have suddenly lost the whole of my iTunes library, with the exception of music that I have bought and downloaded from iTunes Store.  It was all there yesterday and I haven't altered anything, as far as I know!

I have suddenly lost the whole of my iTunes library, with the exception of music that I have bought and downloaded from iTunes Store.  It was all there yesterday and I haven't altered anything, as far as I know!  I hope it's something quite simple?
Apologies, but none of the communities listed seems to fit this question - so I'm taking pot luck!

For music that you've purchased from Apple that are on your iPhone you should be able to copy to your computer's iTunes via File > Transfer Purchases. Also if you are in the US then you should be able to re-download past music purchases for free : http://support.apple.com/kb/HT2519
For your own music that you've copied, then if you haven't got a backup on, for example, external drives or CDs/DVDs then you could see if any of the utilities mentioned in this old post still exist and work

  • IMovie and Canon FS100 Camcorder - will they work together?

Hi! A MacUser since 1989, and using a digital camera for stills and videos since 2004 - +but really have done next to nothing with a true "camcorder".+
I'm considering a Canon FS100 camcorder which records onto SD and SDHC cards (but has no internal memory / storage).
    *But my concerns are this:*
    1. How to transfer from the SD cards to my Mac? (currently 10.4.11 but likely 10.5 in a month or so)
    2. If I purchase the camcorder in the USA it is apparently set for NTSC - i.e. I can only play back from the camera to an NTSC television - but I travel in the US, live in Europe (PAL) -- is there no "switch" to choose either the recording or the playback mode (like there is with my iPod Touch- for playback that is).
    3. What about "still photos" that I take with the FS100? Are they .jpg files? Can iPhoto handle them?
    4. Indeed what about iPhoto: Can it import all the videos and photos from an FS100??
Again, this is all real "new new" to me; and I don't want to buy/carry 2 camcorders (an NTSC and a PAL!!!) --
Any help or reference guides etc really appreciated. The big trip is not tomorrow, so I've got some time here.
    Thanks! Steve Schulte

    Hi there Stephen,
I feel so lucky that I stumbled into a great file management scheme with my Canon HF100 and I can also report that before that I tried an FS100 and the same procedure for a week before I got this camera. I picked up this method on a thread on MacRumours, I believe.
Without the inconvenience of needing the AC power adapter plugged in to download files direct from the camera, simply use a USB card reader to read directly from the card. The card will mount as a device labeled "Canon" and inside that is a single directory labeled "Private". Inside that is the one you want, labeled "AVCHD". Create a disc image just a little larger than this file and drag the "AVCHD" file over to the disk image. Name the disk image to suit, such as place/date. Both iMovie 08 and FCE recognize the mounted image as a camera and import the footage just fine. Not quite PNP, but this procedure is so smooth that I'm almost surprised that this video n00b could get it going so well If you are in a hurry you can just drag the file to a folder named similar to what you will name the disk image to keep them sorted and do the disk images later on.
I use 8 gig SDHC cards so that I can archive each full card's AVCHD file's disk image on a dual layer DVD. I leave the images on a hard drive as well, but won't be shy about deleting less precious ones and using the DVD's only for storage. The images will mount directly from the DVD and import easily too.
This weekend I upgraded from 10.4.10 to 10.5.4, installed FCE, and was able to mount a disc image and import the files as easily as before.
But of course, you need an Intel Mac do work with the AVCHD files....
    Hope this helps!
    Cheers!
    Glen

  • How can I capture film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder into my computer?

I've captured film clips from my Canon FS200 camcorder before so you can understand how frustrated I now feel not being able to do it today. I have just one 30-second clip on the memory card. It plays on my camcorder but I cannot transfer the clip to my computer.
I have an HP desktop computer that's two years old with plenty of hard drive space. I've tried capturing using the memory card inserted into the computer and I've tried using the USB2.0 port. Nothing works anymore. I used to capture with ease using Windows Movie Maker or Photo Gallery.
In the past when the capture was successful I would import the clips into Magix Edit Pro 16 for editing. I could never capture directly into this program though. I hope someone can help me out.

In Windows Movie Maker and Photo Gallery I click on Import From Device or Import Photos and Videos. A box appears but it is empty. The message above the box is, "if you do not see your device..." click Refresh. Refresh doesn't do it.
When I try to import with Magix Edit Pro 16 (a German video editing program) I get the message: "Magix could not connect to selected device."
I have run out of options. I don't know what else to do. This Friday I'm going to do some filming at a ballroom dance but I'm pessimistic about being able to capture the raw video to my computer.
This is an edit later in the day. Now I can capture into Photo Gallery and then into Windows Movie Maker or Magix. But I can only do this with the USB 2.0 connection. When I put the memory card into the computer slot, nothing happens. It used to work. Anyway, I'm glad I can finally do some practice editing again. I'm just in the learning stage with anything graphic.

  • Video Files Recorded on SD Card Used in Canon AVCHD Camcorder Not Visible Under Mountain Lion

    Hello:
Mountain Lion seems to treat the storage media (an SD card) used to record video in my Canon AVCHD camcorder differently than Mac OS X 10.7, 10.6 and 10.5.
When the card is inserted into the built in-card reader, it mounts as one would expect; however, a folder named "Private" appears and nothing seeems to be inside of it. If I use a machine running 10.7, 10.6, or 10.5, I'm able to drill down the fodler structure to the MTS files.
Anyone know of a way to tell 10.8 to see the data structure as 10.7 would?
I'm guessing that 10.8 wants me to use iMovie or Final Cut Pro X to access the video; however, the files need to remain as they are (i.e. mts files) and used in Adobe Premiere Pro and Adobe After Effects.
This one is kind of obscure, I know.
    Thank you for any input.
    -Warren

    Let's see...
Sounds like you're running into an expected issue if you make an alias to removeable media.  The same thing would happen if you made the alias to a folder on a DVD-R disc or CD-R.  If you eject the original, you disable the alias.
If you copy the entire SD card volume to your drive, the PRIVATE package should copy across.  Then, as a folder on your hard drive rather than a volume on removeable media, you could make an alias to the STREAM package for quicker access later.
I'm pretty sure that Handbrake, like Prmeiere Pro, can see the MTS files directly.  That is, it's not dependant on the other folders in the PRIVATE directory sturcture.  As such, you could copy the contents of the STREAM package to another folder on your drive.  Just be mindful of the default MTS file names if you're using more than one SD card (you don't want to accidentally copy 00001.MTS from one card over 00001.MTS from another card).
As long as Handbrake sees MTS directly, you could even rename the MTS files after you've copied them.
On a side note, I almost always archive my SD cards with the data structure intact.  More often than not, that file structure is important to corretly access the video stored within that structure.  If something unexpected happens while working with the MTS files, it is good to have the original file structure to go back to.  Although, SD cards are getting to be so low cost that sometimes I just label the SD card and store it for archiving.

  • FireWire is the only way to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?

As a followup to my last post a moment ago tonight 1/30/08:
Is it true that I need a FireWire cable to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?
If so, the Apple salesperson is wrong.
He told me last Monday that purchasing the new iLife 2008 (that contains iMovie 2008) would allow me to use my current USB cable.
Given I see NO FireWire port on my new MacBook Pro (bought in 8/2006), I don't see a solution.
Note the camera, an HD camcorder (the Canon HV20) did NOT come with a FireWire cable; it only came with a USB male plug on one side of the cable and the other is a small square-like male plug that connects to a female port on the Canon HV20.
    Solution?
    Thanks for any suggestions, Daniel

The USB cable is for importing still photographs. Not video.
The firewire 400 cable you need is one that goes from the 6 pin full size male connector to the small 4 pin form used for DV.
The cable plugs into the camera in a socket behind a plastic flap near the eyepiece. Its marked HDV/DV. The other end plugs into the MBP on the right-hand side. 4th from the back.

  • Connecting a Canon HV30 camcorder vai a thunderbolt port to a new imac

    Hi all
I was using imovie 11 with my old imac (purchased Summer 2008) using the firewire connection to transfer DV/HDV video from my Canon HV30 camcorder (tape). I just bought a new 27 inch imac with the thunderbolt ports and now I am stuck as there is no firewire
The camcorder had  a 4 pin firewire output so I have tried the following
Used the original camcorder cable (Firewire 400), converted to firewire 800 with an adapter and then used the Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter
Used a cable that converted the 4 pin firewire to firewire 800 and then used the Apple firewire to thunderbolt adapter.
In each case, imovie is not seeing the camcorder.
I know that my camcorder is not listed as being supported by imovie but has worked fawlessly on my old machine running the same software and operation system (Mountain Lion)
    Any ideas - thanks
    Kevin

    Hi epjustin,
What I said in the previous post (Oct 9 2013) works for me but I can try to explain in more detail if that helps.
Firstly. remove the battery or the ac power connection from the camcorder. - VERY IMPORTANT
Turn on the Imac and login
Attach a thunderbolt to firewire 800 adapter to the IMac thunderbolt port - you can get this from the Apple Store
Now attach a firewire 800 to firewire 400 adapter to the the end of the previous adapter. You should now have the appropriate firewire 400 connection so that you can attach the original firewire cable that came with the camcorder.
Now connect the camcorder cable to complete the connection between the camcorder and the computer
Now connect the power supply or the battery to the camcorder and turn on the camcorder. Set the camcorder up so that it exports through the cable as normal
You should now be able to detect the camcorder in imovie. If you can't see the camcorder in imovie, go into system report from about this mac and you should see an entry in the thunderbolt section relating to the connected camera.
As I mentioned above, turn on and disconnect the power from the camcorder before disconnecting the camcorder from the Imac or turning off the Imac
If you can't get things to work, you may want to try connecting the camcorder to another computer as there is a chance that the board is fried if it doesn't work
Please let me know if you need any further help
    Kevin
