Canon HD10 And PrePRO CS4

I am running XP Service Pack 2 on a Dual Core 2.66 GHz and 3.2 GB Ram machine with a ATI Radeon HD 2400 ProCard.
I have 2 Canon HD10's internal hard drive camcorders. They are brand new and I haven't edited anything with them yet plus I just moved up from 6.5 to PPRO CS4. I have been struggling to figure out the best settings for these 3 variables, computer, camera and software. I have a job I have to do pretty soon and I really don't have the time to do all kinds of tests. I don't need the HD or HD Blu Ray now and I now I must upgrade my system to handle that but I would just like everything to be set up to be comparable to the mini dv I used to edit.
I know I should use XP setting on the camera but from there on I am pretty much lost...please can anyone give me a starting place to begin.
Thanks in advance.

No, I used to rent and I thought if I buy a couple of these and I don't need to buy tape, and I won't need to rent anymore, well I am on my way...oh boy...new software, new processor, more memory, new learning curve on cs4 instead of 6.5, what have I got myself into. You have been so kind to help.
You know I am the kind of computer guy who knows how to run things, ie: edit in Premiere 6.5 but getting into all the hardware stuff and all that, I just get lost. I am like a race car driver that knows how to drive but doesn't know fig about the mechanics of the car.
Sorry to be a pain.
I will start delving into some of the other discussions to see how similar problems were delt with.

I have downloaded the Camera_Raw_5_7, but have been unsuccessful at getting it to work...?  Says could not complete request because of a program error???

CS4 will only use ACR 5.1, but your camera is supported there.

  • Can't open canon raw files in cs4

I recently had to rebuild my pc after a problem that stopped a few of my programs working (I'd installed xampp so I could use wordpress on the pc but it stopped cs4, firefox, video studio and a bunch of other stuff working - removal and reinstalling did no use, I had to build a new disc).
I reinstalled cs4 and got all the updates but now I find I can't open can raw files with cs4 or bridge. I tried replacing the Camera Raw.8bi file with the latest file from adobe as per their web instructions but it still doesn't work. So I tried the adobe dng convertor (version 8.3) and ran the files through that, still no luck, I can't open the files.
I could open them wwith canons own software and save as a tiff, but then I'm losing a lot of information.
I'm still running vista home premium - no I can't upgrade to windows 8.1 and use the latest photoshop and lightroom software because 8.1 doesn't work with my nikon scanner or my epson large format printer. It doesn't like a few other items I have either.
I remember I had to download a few files a couple of years ago when I first bought the pc (a whole 3 years ago) as I was having trouble with photoshop and raw files then but I can't remember the name of the file or where I got it from.
Anyone able to help? much appreciated if you can.

    Hi John,
Adobe told me to replace the relevant file, which I did. The trouble is that went I do this then 'camera raw' disappears from the 'help / plugins' list and there doesn't seem to be any way of getting back other than uninstalling and reinstalling cs4, and once I do this it overwrites the files again...
I can't remember having this trouble when I first installed it a couple of years ago but I do seem to remember having to replace a file somewhere but that may have been on an earlier version.
    I have an old EOS 5d mk1 & a 7d mk1, so it's not as though the camera is unknown to cs4.
    Regards,
    Doug

  • Canon G11 and Camera Raw...

I'm running CR 5.6 on a MacBook Pro (Snow Leopard) and though this version is supposed to support the Canon G11, I'm finding it abysmal at any ISO higher than 200-400.  The amount of noise added between the preview (which I know is based on the JPEG) and opening it in CR is significant and the white balance goes nuts as well.  I've also tried the new DNG Converter and see the same thing.  Is anyone else having this issue?  I've also got the Canon S90 but haven't tried it out yet.  I'm also going to post something in the Lightroom forum as that's where, ultimately, I'd like to do most of my RAW processing.
I'm attaching two images-- one is the jpeg from the canon g11 and the other is a jpeg exported from Photoshop CS4 without any processing to illustrate this.  The ISO was 500 on these shots.
any advice would be greatly appreciated!

Having done still more playing, now with some more shots under artificial lighting, I'd have to say the colour in the Adobe Standard profile for the G11 is starting to look less good under tungsten light.  In sunlight/daylight the Adobe standard profile is really excellent, colorwise, but under tungsten lights the reds and browns can assume a day-glo quality that is quite alarming!
The Canon profiles and the jpegs seem to handle tungsten much much better - to get a similar (more accurate) result on the Adobe standard profile I have to pull the red saturation right down and shift the red hue slightly towards orange in the calibration tab.  I'd need to get hold of a proper colour checker and shoot it under more controlled conditions under tungsten light with a proper white balance done to be sure, (as the lighting conditions for the concert shots I was playing with were suboptimal to put it mildly) but getting as good colour under tungsten light as the jpegs spit out is definitely proving a little troublesome with the 5.6 beta. I can work around it by switching to a different default setting for high ISO, using the Canon profiles where I'm likely to be shooting using tungsten, but it's getting to be more mucking about than I'd like for an upmarket point and shoot! It would be nice if the Adobe profile for the G11 was as effective as the one for my 20D, where it just works. No need to kludge with exposure adjustments or use a different profile for different light sources.

  • Canon 550D and LR

I've just acquired a Canon 550D and I have previously used LR1.4 for my Canon 350D RAW files.  I can open 550D RAW files in LR1.4 by converting using the DNG converter 5.7 beta.  I would like guidance on upgrading my LR1.4 - should I get LR2 (when 2.7 becomes available) or wait for LR3, or just stick with LR1.4 and the DNG converter.
What's Adobe likely upgrade pricing, LR1.x to LR2.x is about UKL92 - the question is what is the likely cost of LR1.x to LR3.x and LR2.x to LR3.x.  Can anybody remember the price ratios for Photoshop upgrades.

I don't think you will get an answer to how much the various upgrade paths costs until the product is announced in a month or two or three.
The fact that LR 3 beta 2 expires the end of June is a hint.  You can look at the current upgrade pricing from various versions of Photoshop to CS4 if you want to see if there are tiers but that doesn't mean LR upgrades will use the same structure, either.

  • Canon 550d and ACR 5.6?

hey, i just got my canon 550d, and i updated to ACR 5.6 but PS CS4 still wont read the .CR2 files. Did i do something wrong or do i have to wait for a newer version of ACR?
    Thanks.

It seems that a few years ago Adobe was much quicker in updating for newer equipment, even coming out with updates before the new cameras were generally available.
    Wrong...
The timing of when new cameras come out is not under the control of Adobe...neither is the ability to get new camera models to test and decode–that's completely under the control of the camera makers...
What you are seeing is the rather herky-jerky nature of hardware releases followed by software releases, nothing more and nothing less. Some cameras (and their users) luck out because either Adobe gets a camera really early (the higher the retail price the more likely it will get attention from the camera makers) or the timing of the camera is simply fortunate regarding ACR and Lightroom updates.
If you track back over time, Adobe has actually done a remarkable job of staying pretty darn current with new cameras–over 200 models to date. And the whole issue could be mitigated if the camera makers would make more of an effort or adopt DNG which would allow automatic camera support.
Seriously, it ain't Adobe...it the luck of the draw and timing and the fact the camera makers don't do a good enough job supporting 3rd parties...not just Adobe mind you but that includes Bibble, Apple and Capture One as well.

  • Color profile management across LR and ps CS4

Problem the same file when sent from LR to cs4 for fine tuning looks totally different its color.
Therefore I'd like some advice on how to setup my color profiles for my monitor, LR and Photoshop CS4.  I shoot with Canon and the last articles have been advising to go with the Prophoto profile for it's large spectrum.
I can set the monitor and CS4 to that....but what is LR's profile.  I can't even FIND the default.  I'm sorry.  I've poked around and poked around.
I don't have any problems setting the profiles for printing....that part I got.
I only used to use photoshop and didn't have these issues...but I'd like to get the programs sync'd.
My OS is Vista.....shortly to be WIndows 7.
    Thanks in advance.

No, the problem is that lots of monitors install profiles that have a
corrupt perceptual rendering intent. This is very strange but unfortunately
true. Especially Dell and Samsung monitors have this issue. Lightroom uses
the perceptual intent if present and Photoshop uses relative to render to
the display profile. This is only an issue on windows machines and you can
check whether this is what is causing your problem by going to your
monitor's properties dialog and clicking on the color management tab. There
you should delete any profile you see. This will make windows assume that
your monitor is sRGB and should make Lightroom and Photoshop render
identically. This is only a test. Both will render the image wrong since
your monitor is unlikely to be exactly sRGB. The ONLY way to get correct
color in any program whether it be Photoshop or Lightroom is to calibrate
and profile your monitor using one of the hockey puck calibrators. You can
have a reasonable one (Spyder 2 or Huey Pro) for under $100. Better ones are
$150 to $250 and often include printer profiling too. The cheapest ones do a
very good job already if you're not too extremely critical.
Note that we have seen literally hundreds of issues like this on this forum
all caused by bad monitor profiles. People only noticed that this was
happening because they compared Lightroom to Photoshop and saw a difference.
They were having bad color in every app before already.

  • Canon 5dMII and Sony A900 support

New released cameras need ACR and Lightroom support for Canon 5dMII and Sony A900.

Jeff, CS4 shipping dates have not been announced (I'm on the list to be notified when CS4 will ship. There is no announcement... yet speculation of end of October shipping is from adobe saying they expect CS4 to ship in Fourth quarter 2008. no guarantee of that shipping date, until it's announced. In Fourth quarter 2008 could be end of December, we have to wait and see) As for 5DMII the shipping date is rumored at end of November 2008, but not announced, and that date seems to be headed toward mid-December or January.....I do agree that LR2.1 and ACR4.6 will likely be released by Fourth quarter, pending no major bugs are found in either program.
I expect adobe gets cameras for testing and profiling when reviewers received the camera. So, yes, If production cameras are available to a select few I expect adobe, to have the camera and, to be building support for the camera including that support once they complete their profiling; regardless of the camera shipping date.
LJ the unofficial support for the A900 is due to ACR using the A700 raw profile to work with the A900 RAW files. This is not the same as supporting the camera. Yes, it allows A900 owners to work in RAW, but not with the correct profile.

  • Compatible HDV formats between Premiere CS4 and AE CS4?

Sorry if this has been covered before.
I'm new to CS4 Production Premium, (but not Premiere in general), and I'm having trouble finding a compatible format that I can use between AE CS4 and Premiere CS4. I'm using 1080i HDV captured from a Canon XHA1.
Premiere CS4 reads it just fine, but I cant get it into AE.
Thanks in advance for any comments.

once I understood it was only a one way street per use.
It can be sort of two-way.

After installing Mountain Lion, I tried to scan from my Canon MX870 and received the message: "MP Navigator EX quit unexpectedly. Click Reopen to open the application again. A report will be sent to Apple,"  This problem happened right after I installed Mountain Lion. I then downloaded Canon's upgraded software and drivers for the MX 870 and the problem was resolved. Now one month later, the problem has returned.

Solved problem with original Canon software.  When I downloaded Canon software upgraded for OS X 10.8, I got all by Navigator Ex. Noticed that on Canon's site, the upgraded version is 3.1; my app was 2.1. Upgraded to 3.1 for Nav. Ex, and it works.
You should still use Image Capture IMHO.  If it was my gear, that's what I would do.  No need to worry about software upgrades.

  • Lack of support for Canon G7 and G9. Alternatives?

I am really disappointed about the lack of support for the Canon G9, and looking at the list of compatible cameras (http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306835) I notice that Canon G7 - even if it does not have a RAW format, is not supported either.
I am thinking that the purchase of the G9 may have been premature and that I may need to sell it and get another cam that is supported by Apple/Aperture.
What would you guys do? Is there a cam out there similar to the G9 at the moment that has a Apple-supported RAW format?
    Best regards,
    Kjell Are Refsvik

I think the camera closest to the G9 that has RAW support from Apple are the Panasonic DMC-LX2/Leica D-Lux 3 twins. Don't know where you are, but in the US, the Panasonic costs about $400. 10MP, 28-112mm (35mm equivalent) Leica lens, very compact body, and RAW output. The Leica costs $599, and has that classic look.
I don't know much about that cameras, but you may want to investigate.

  • How to open Raw files from Canon 1100D and 650D in CS5?

I need assistance please. I have a Canon 1100D and 650D. On Photoshop CS5 it does not recognise the 2 Cameras Raw files. What is my course of action. Help will be highly appreciated

evjems, As per the below article, Canon EOS 1100D needs minimum Adobe Camera Raw(ACR) version 6.4 and Canon EOS 650D needs minimum ACR version 7.1
Camera Raw plug-in | Supported cameras
So, you should be able to open raw files of 1100D, if you upgrade your PS ( Help > Updates), but not of 650D as it needs PS CS6 and above.
Let me know in case you still have any doubts.
    Hope that Helps!

You'll need to update to at least ACR 8.2 for the 70D to be recognized.  The normal way to update PSE12 to the latest CR is to use Help / Updates in the Editor which should update to ACR 8.5.
According to Adobe's website PSE12 shipped with ACR 8.1 and you say it says yours is reported as ACR 8.0.
Are you using PSE 11 and not 12?  PSE 11's maximum ACR version is 8.0.
