Canon HF-200 1080i50 - Looks good in FCE but Export to Quicktime is jerky

Hi,
Title says it all really. I have FCE 4 and over the weekend I picked up a Canon HF-200 (PAL UK version). I am sort of impressed by the quality of the camera - I will probably post about that soon - but I have a real issue with 'Export to Quicktime' (the uncompressed MOV file).
I have the 'easy setup' set so that its 1080i50. I used Log and transfer. I dragged a couple of clips onto the sequence (which looks great - perfect playback on the Viewer etc), saved the project, chose to Export the sequence. It gave me a huge file as expected but its jerky and pixelated during movement. A similar test with 25p clips worked fine - the Quicktime Movie looks as it did on the viewer.
Any ideas?

Hi,
I also get the same problem. Just bought Canon HF 200 1080i50 European PAL model.
And i've filmed a bunch of test videos 50i fps and 25p fps.
And started to import in Final Cut Pro 6.0.5.
Video settings:
Sequence Preset: Apple ProRes 422 1920x1080 50i 48kHz
Capture preset: HDV-Apple ProRes 422
And it all seems so weired:
Clips captured at 50i - looks interlaced and jagged - when i look at Item properties, there is Vid rate: 25fps Field Dominance: None ????????
but
Clips captured at 25fps - looks OK - when i look at Item properties, there is Vid rate: 25fps Field Dominance: Upper (Odd) ????????
This all is not right .... there should be where 50i Field Dominance and not with 25fps

Maybe you can help me with settings to import AVCHD from Canon HF200 to FCP ???
    thanx,
    Kaspars

FIRST thing to check: BEFORE you Log and Transfer.. check the FORMAT column in the L&T Window.. this will give you the actual format of the video in its native form before FC gets it hands on it. Compare this to the Item Properties AFTER you ingest and see if it's any different.
Also, when you selct your EASY SET .. PRESS SET UP then start editing.
Ive got a Canon HF100 (PAL) and a Panasonic AG-HMC151E (PAL) they are both AVCHD.. both Shoot 25P .. when I import the two.. Canon is 50i field dom= UPPER .. Panasonic is 25P field dom=NONE.
Video seetings for both ProRes422 HQ 1080/25P 48kHz
Capture: ProRes HQ (though FC can only ProRes from L&T of course!)
Canon does 25P but over 50i .. However, im not sure about my Panasonic as i just got it! .. Will find this out asap.
    Hope this helps a little?

  • Looks good in FCE but DVD looks bad

Hi Guys hope you can help, Have FCE, imports from sony handycam , everything looks good and tight in FCE but when exported to iDVD the finished product looks terrible, hard to describe but looks blurry, almost a ghosting to motion shots, this doesn't do it when I burn from iMovie, I've tried different setups in easy setup with no luck, However I did ( out of frustration) export back to tape and then import into iMovie and then burned from there and it looked much better, please help, thank you

Thank you for responding so quickly, I'm not sure what you require for spec on the Mac but it's a Mac Pro with Hardware Overview:
    Model Name: Mac Pro
    Model Identifier: MacPro1,1
    Processor Name: Dual-Core Intel Xeon
    Processor Speed: 2.66 GHz
    Number Of Processors: 2
    Total Number Of Cores: 4
L2 Cache (per processor): 4 MB
    Memory: 2 GB
OS isMac OS X 10.5.4, FCE is version 4, Quicktime is version 7.5, iMovie is version 7.1.4
Sony camcorder is DCR-SR42( 1/6 type) CCD 680,000 pixels, this is a non-tape type, internal harddrive. Note: I also have a Sony DCR TRV 310 tape type that FCE does see and able to control, Clip info says Compressor = DV/DVCPRO- NTSC Data rate = 3.6MB/sec
FCE doesn't see the Sony DCR-SR 42 camcorder when I connect ( via USB) but iMovie does, so I download into iMovie, clips come in as a .mov, clip info says 720x480, FCE clip info says : Creator =Quicktime Player, Compressor= Apple MPEG-2 SD camcorder Video, Data rate=1.2MB/sec, Frame size= 720x480, Vid Rate= 29.97 fps.
So files in iMovie, I open FCE and import files from iMovie , tried using the XLM export from iMovie and it does work however after doing compared testing on test DVD the imported files looked better than the XLMs. I have the easy setup using the DV-NTSC as that's the only one that comes close to what I'm using, same goes for when I export, I export using the Quicktime export with self contained off.
I have iDVD set to professional encoding, (ya I know , iDVD not that professional) when final burn is done and played on a DVD player on a LCD the finished video is really low resolution quality, the content is of a football game ( my sons) using tripod of coarse, but the images are rough, blockly, looks like really bad codec or wrong codec or wrong conversion type or too much compression. I have done other DVD's with iMovie from tape camera that look alot better than what I'm getting from FCE, Please help, what I'm I doing wrong, thank you

    Any thoughts

Try creating a new project, and bring in a short clip and one or 2 subtitles and see if you see the same behavior.  If you don't,  something's probably wonky in the project.  If the sample behavior has the same problem, if you want to send it to me with the associated media, I'll take a quick look.

Where are you hosting the site, how are you uploading the files and what's the URL of your site so we can examine it first hand?
Adding audio files by dragging onto the web page forces the viewer to have Quicktime installed on their computer in order to be able to listen to them.  Look at the audio player options on this page of Roddy's iWeb for Musicians site: Audio Players for your Music Website.

  • Text looks good in ProRes422 but not Animation codec

I am doing a lower third in Motion and exporting the mov file to use in FCP.
The FCP timeline is in ProRes422.
If I export the text in Animation codec it looks jaggy and not good quality.
If I export the same thing in ProRes422 it looks good in FCP.
But, I can't get the transparency in the background with 422 , thats the problem.
How can I get around this?
In the past, with text, from Motn to FCP, I have had two video tracks with the same graphic and the top one was set to Travel Matte - Luma, and this gave me transparency, but my lower 3rd has a moving graphic element.
Can I export in Motion with 422 and somehow get a transparent background?
    Thanks,,

If your sequence will not render to your satisfaction in the host codec and because text cannot possibly get any better than that, you're either looking at it improperly, have something set incorrectly (render settings in FCP? Commonly missed problem), or your expectations are unreasonably high. But I'm not watching over your shoulder, no clue what you're doing or why you're doing it that way. But I know that Motion's text and pixel output is beautiful so I've got no problem insisting you have an easily corrected user error, you just need to figure out which one it might be.
    Might try Mark Spencer's articles:
    http://provideocoalition.com/index.php/smartin/story/renderingmotion_projects_in_final_cutpro/
    http://www.applemotion.net/page20/page20.html
Why do you think a "mask" would improve the rendering?

  • Video looks good in PR but bad when exported

Hello. I hope someone can help me out here. I am doing color corrections in Premiere Pro and it looks good but when I export it, the colors are not as saturated (it needs more color). Do any of you know the reasons why and how I can fix this?
I read that my laptop might need to be calibrated is that true? Is there another way? How do I calibrate it?!!
Please help me. Thanks in advance.

like television and also the theater screen, but I know the theater screen is calibrated so I guess my video needs to be calibrated?
i think thats what the others are getting at.
if on your computer, premiere and vlc and quicktime all look the same there is no problem with premiere.
if your video on your computer looks different than another screen or tv, then its calibration.
you can adjust the saturation on your computer until it looks as dull as the calibrated theater screen, then you should have closer matching displays. in windows you may find a control for you video card, in mac im not sure.  then you can adjust saturation in premiere to your clips/timeline.
if you dont want to change your saturation for your laptop, you could use an adjustment layer above the footage and reduce saturation to match the calibrated theater screen. then go back and boost the saturation on clips or previous adjustment layer... once happy with saturation that way, disable the adjustment layer with the reduced saturation for export.

  • 1080i video looks good on iMac but not on small movie screen

I have a 1080i video that I exported as a default 1440 x 1080 @ 59.94 fps. If I play the video on my iMac, which is 1920x1080, it looks good, but when I play it on a smaller movie screen you can really see the interlacing. I tried highlighting all my film on the primary timeline, going to Info --> Settings View from the dropdown box at the bottom, and then setting:
    Roles: Video & Dialogue
    Timecode Display: Drop Frame
    Alpha Handling: None/Ignore Alpha
    Field Dominance Override: Lower First
When I export and play that it looks pretty much the same, if not worse. I'm thinking that Drop Frame probably isn't good, but it still has the interlaced look.
    Does anyone have any suggestions?

    How'd you do that?
I just imported it from the camera. Again, I messed up earlier as it originally imported at 29.97.
How'd you do that? What format is your media exactly? Codec and complete specs.
    Codecs: H.264, Linear PCM
    Frame Size: 1440 × 1080
    Video Frame Rate: 29.97
    Video Field Dominance: Upper
Well, that's interesting. I didn't realize it told me what the Field Dominance is. Now I know not to use Lower.
Why should I not change the Field Dominance? Also, I was reading another post where a guy tried copying his videos from one project, 1080i, to another project, 1080p, and he was not successful. Have you tried this or heard of anyone being successful doing this? Thanks.

  • What am I doing wrong here? Vids look correct in FCP but not in Quicktime..

    Hi,
I have a few quicktime movies that I made a long time ago. I have dragged them to my hard drive and they look great and play exactly how I edited them in Final Cut Pro. However, when I open them in Quicktime or try to play them into any other format (Flash) they appear wider.
Now I am confused as it appears every movie I have ever saved seems to be distorted when I play it in Quicktime.
Are there some settings within FCP or Quicktime that I am not aware of?
Are both programs accurately playing what is recorded?

I am having this exact same issue. My sequence is 352x288 the video looks great in FCP but every time I Export this sequence straight out through QuickTime (not QT Conversion or Compressor) self-contained and using the current settings it plays back in QuickTime as 720x480 (640x480) millions in DV format. I even tried to force the export to a customized setting with the 352x288 frame size and it still plays back at 720x480 making the video look fuzzy and stretched. We've already spent a few hours testing other options with no success.
Oh and what's odd is if I open the same exported file in FCP's Viewer the size is correct and when I view the exported file's info (Apple+I) it says Dimensions: 352x288. Codec is DV/DVCPRO - NTSC. One thing I just thought of while typing this is would changing the codec make a difference since the original footage is 720p from an HVX200 camera? If I should change it what should I change it too?
The viewers will be watching this in QT Player. I'm using FCP7 and QT7 also tested with QTX with the same results.
Any idea is better than none, thanks!

  • Any way to get refunded for games that looked good in adverts but turned out to be entirely rubbish?

Ripped off? I got over 80 hours from Bloodborne, THE standout game for me this gen.

30 days is too long for a refund. As it was mentioned earlier, it would be the death of
small devs who are doing it proper and will be run down by something subjective.
One middle ground solution is to wait for reviews and word of mouth (friends or news gaming sites etc.)
before you buy any games. Marketers aren't the most honest group so stop listening/reading into them
already. Too many idiots with short-term money keep falling for things marketers come up with and end
up complaining everywhere. Do your own research and stop being lazy.
-Stop pre-ordering (Producers and publishers aren't testing their products enough, and have shifted their focus on pleasing their board members too much. These board members don't know the ins-and-outs of game development so they should also be called out in comments and conversations too.)
-More developers should go back to creating demos for games, and the Gaming platforms (Sony, Microsoft, Steam) could accomodate developers in terms of costs for demos.
Patience is a virtue and it would be nice if game development (and all the groups involved) went back to the good
old days of properly tested games before being released.

  • Help with Importing psd's, looks good in viewer, but not in canvas...

I have been searching for threads related to this issue, and this is what i've come up with...
It is my sequence settings, the picture looks great in the viewer but not in the canvas, as soon as i put it in the timeline, it goes blurry almost. I tried changing my settings to HD 16:9 and the picture looks great, but I need standard (NTSC DV 4:3), does anyone know a way around this? I can do it in Avid fine, why am I having such a hard time in FCP?
    Thanks
P.S i have tried changing my image size in photoshop to 720x480 and 720x540 and it doesn't seem to make a difference.
    Jana

The canvas is a low resolution proxy.
What does your sequence looking like on your NTSC production monitor?

  • Design looks good in IE but off in Safari & Firefox

    Hi:
I have a design that has rounded corners on all 4 sides surrounding a site - I'm using tables (the layout otherwise is pretty basic) and everything lines up beautifully in IE, but appears to be a pixel or two off in Firefox and Safari. It's driving me crazy!
See: http://www.thdesigninc.com/inprogress/Auburn/index.html and look on the right side.
Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated -
    Thanks!

First to avoid any confusion: The form text fields for username and password is what I was referring to, not cells of any kind (that is a term reserved for a part of a table)
Now for the "How To" part, personally, I would...
    1. Click the stairstep icon in the upper right of that page in GL's Layout Mode
    2. Click the < > Create a Style... button
    3. Name it "input" (no quotes)
    4. Click on the "Cross" tab (Block Properties)
    5. Enter a width of something like 80px
Test by previewing in browser. If the problem is still there, shrink the px size and see if setting it at 20px gets rid of the problem, if not there is something else at work causing your issue. If it does get rid of the issue at 20px, keep increasing the size until you get closer to the length you wanted for the text fields.
Let me know if that helped, hurt or did nothing.

  • Dvd looks good on tv but awful on computer??

okay - another question to throw out. The still image slide shows that I'm burning onto dvds look great on the tv when I play them but when I put the dvd back into my computer to play it it looks awful - fuzzy/blurry etc..
    why is this happening??

I belive it has to do with the resolution - your TV (normal 4:3 is 640x480) your screen has much high resolution, so it does some compression to make it fit the new resolution, so blurry on screen but fine once in its native TV screen

  • Photos look good in CS6 but grainy in other programs

I am using CS6 and doing various editing on photos.  They are raw files initially and once I am finished with the editing and flattening I save them as .png files.  The photos look great when I view them in photoshop yet when I look at them in Bridge or other programs (Windows), they look grainy and the colors appear muted.  Any ideas on what may be the cause?

    the colors appear muted.
    Did you embed the profile?
    Why png anyway?
    As for the grainyness:

  • I've been giving HD videos in MTS format and convert the for editing in FCE.  Looks good in the program, but when I export the finished film, quality had been noticeable diminished.  Is there any way to prevent FCE from lowering the output quality?

    Hello -
I've been sent HD footage in MTS format and converted it to Mp4 for editing in FCE.  It looks good in FCE but when I export the movie, the quality is noticably diminished.   Is there any way I can prevent FCE from lowering the quality on export?
    Thanks.

    >I use Foxreal video converter for Mac to convert the MTS using the Apple intermediate codec setting and the problem is that I don't get image, just audio
My thought would be to NOT use Foxreal video converter.
    Use MPEG Streamclip or Clipwrap.
