Canon HF200

I looked at a Canon HF200 today. Does anybody have positive or negative experience using this camera with FCE 4? I will be using the camera to produce short clips for a theatre website. Compatibility with Final Cut Express is essential. Any info will be greatly appreciated.
Thanks.

I have an HF200. It's my first and only experience with an HD camera so I can not give any advice as far as how the camera compares to other HD cameras. There is no internal storage in the camera, you need sd cards which at first I was a little leery about, but it's a lot less hassle to plug in my sd card reader and import the video vs hooking a camera up and importing. FCE 4.1 handles the video just fine. Be sure to use the easy setup feature. The camera can record in a few different formats so check the settings you use and remember to set the audio in FCE to simple stereo. I've never had any issues but I read this forum regularly and if your settings are wrong you will have issues doing a log and transfer.
The only other issue is how to archive your footage. Once you do a log and transfer the file sizes really grow because with FCE you can not use the actual AVCHD files (they have compression applied to keep them small). You need to use Apple Intermediate Codec to maintain the HD quality. Depending on your computer system setup, play back and editing can be jumpy and look like you're dropping frames, but it's just your system unable to handle the HD, but it sounds like you're gonna be exporting for the web so maybe you should try another workflow.
But the camera works fine with FCE 4.1. It just a matter of configuring your system and workflow to give you what you want/need.

  • Canon HF200 and Final Cut Express 4 - not able to import movie files

    Hello,
I have a Canon HF200. I have a 16 GB Duracell "pro photo" flash card. When I first connected my camera to my computer and clicked on "log and transfer" all of the movie clips on my card showed up in FCE 4. I did not import them at this time, however.
Now when I connect the camera, only newer videos taken with the camera show up as importable in FCE. Essentially, while the older videos remain on the card, I cannot access them and import them into FCE.
I am not able to import the files, which are saved as .CPI and .MTS files by simply dragging or using the log and transfer option.
If anyone can help me with this problem and tell me how I can retrieve the movie files I would really appreciate it.
    Thanks a lot.

Do you own a card reader? Use that instead of the camera to transfer your files. If not, try using disc utility (or toast if you have it) to duplicate the memory card to a disc image (you can burn it to dvd if you want a back up of the original files) and then use the disc image to log and transfer.

  • Canon HF200 - variable output frame sizes???

    Hi There Peeps,
Has anyone had a Canon HF200 put out frame sizes 1920x1080 and 1440x1080 from the same shoot?
Not worded that too well but my client came in with his shots on flash drive and as AVCHD is a native nono in FCP the MTS files were converted to MOV with the Voltaic conversion beastie; MOVs into FCP and ho! ho!; different sizes all over the shop.
    Any one got any thoughts?
    Cheers all

I thought the camera shot 1920 and outputs 1440; what is it with 1440 anyway?
The camera might have a full 1920 sensor, but the FORMAT...the HDV format, the codec, is 1440. It is an anamorphic format. This is one way they compress the footage into a small space. I mean, you are getting HD quality on a DV tape...they are compressing the **** out of it. One way is to make the footage anamorphic rather than full raster.
Was it developed by/for US TV networks to more ably use materiel originated on HD @ 16:9?
No. It was designed by the camera manufacturers when they created their codecs.
The Sony Z7 seems to shoot 1920 and output 1440.
Correct. 1920 sensor, 1440 compression type.
today I converted these to 1920x1080 Prores 422 with Compressor, but now have to render any changes in the timeline
That means you have a sequence/clip compression mis-match. Your sequence settings do not match your clips settings. They need to match exactly in order to bypass rendering immediately. If you have FCP 6 and create a new sequence and drop a new clip into that sequence, FCP will ask if you want the sequence to conform to the clip...click YES. Otherwise, choose an Easy Setup that matches what your footage is, then make a new sequence.
I should go back to the AIC .MOVs I guess but I'm not that thrilled with using the AIC.
I wouldn't. AIC lacks timecode...and is lower quality than HDV, and much lower than ProRes.
I think I am confusing myself with round-tripping sequences to Color in Prores and not getting a good return to FCP.
You need to render as PRO RES first in FCP...by either converting the footag to ProRes, or changing your render settings to ProRes. Render, then SEND TO COLOR.

  • Premiere Elements 8 getting media from canon hf200

Let me start off with I have been using premiere 4 for the last year or so using a sony vx2000 camcorder and have had no problems. My computer is a dell xps 420 useing vista, 4026 ram, 32 bit O/S, ATI radeon HD 2600 XT video card. I have upgraded to a canon hf 200 with sdhc memory and have downloaded the trial verison on premiere 8. I was told that this verison will support the sdhc format that my canon hf200 prouduces. I have tryed every different setting on the camera and in premiere and the video that I import off this new camera will not play wright. It is very jerky and the sound goes off and on. I can play this camera media type on sony vegas movie maker 9 and it looks great. The only problem is I have been using the adobe for so long I dont want  to learn how to use the sony vegas. I have called adobe customer service " WHAT A JOKE", 3 times and could not get anyone to pick up the phone, I was on the line 30 min. each time. I finally got through and I swear, I could not understand a dam thing that indian was saying. And  I dont mean American indian. Can anyone help before I go crazy over this.
    Thanks, Carey

Computer optimization including frequent defragmentation is always essential to video editing no matter what the video format. And, available RAM, free hard drive space, virtual memory setup are some major considerations for successful video editing of clips whose duration is beyond a few minutes, generally speaking.
For AVCHD editing in Premiere Elements you can find often suggestions for your computer system to include a quad core processor with 4 GB RAM. A user reports that, even with that set up, his video editing is slow and has decided to go the HD conversion route. Another may say that you do not need a quad core processor, just a faster processor, giving his workflow which includes core 2 duo 2.6 GHz.

All would seem to agree that AVCHD editing demands greater computer resources than other formats, but have not found a fixed recipe for just what level where “one size” fits all.

  • Help: Canon hf200 .mts file imported as 29.97FPS instead of 60FPS (60i). How to fix?

Hey everyone, first post, and I have a question. I searched and I couldn't find an answer for this.
I'm filming on a canon hf200 (class 4 sdhc card--if that makes any difference). I'm filming at 24Mbps on the 60i setting, but when I import in to Premiere, the footage gets imported at 29.97FPS. For my sequence settings, I'm selecting desktop, then 59.94 FPS (since I could not find an AVCHD setting with 60fps), and the clips are still not imported as 60 (or 59.94) FPS. Am I missing something? Settings not right? Have to convert to get 60FPS? Any help will be appreciated!

    24Mbps on the 60i setting
It's unfortunate that camera makers cause this confusion.  The proper nomenclature is to only list frame rates, never the field rate.  Sometime people violate that convention and mistakenly list the field rate instead, causing this type of confusion.
Your camera should be labeling the mode as 30i, because that's what it is, 30 interlaced frames per second.

  • Canon HF200 and Final Cut Express

I just got my first Mac computer, a Mac Mini, and I ordered it with Final Cut Express. I also have a new camera, a Canon HF200, but I'm having trouble with it. When I connect it with the HDMI cable, nothing happens. I have some dics that came with the camera. The first one installed an image viewer type thing, but the second one is doing nothing and I can't even seem to eject it. Can anyone help? I just need to know how you can hook up a Canon HF200 with a Mac Mini and have the video content imported to FCE.

I have the HF 10 & had an import error due to sound mixing settings, but we'll hold off on that for now...
When I connect it with the HDMI cable, nothing happens.
how are you doing this? did you buy the mini displayport adapter or something? if so, this will not work as that will be OUTPUT only, it can't import or input video.

were these full size CDs? the canon software is useless, btw, so I wouldn't bother with it.
rebooting holding the left mouse button down will eject the disc, if it's the std size.

USB cable & using the import function: http://www.apple.com/finalcutexpress/tutorials/ & select the one for "Transfer from AVCHD"

  • 1080i video from a Canon HF200 not displaying correctly after iMovie/iDVD

I'm not a technical person, so pardon my lack of technical terms.
I recorded video with a Canon HF200 HD video recorder in 1080i. When I plug the camera into my TV via HDMI and watch the video, it's gorgeous.
When I export the video to iMovie it still looks fine ON THE SCREEN. Same in iDVD. When I burn the DVD and play it, it looks like CACA!!!! The video stops filling up the screen and creates a black band on the top and bottom of the video.
What am I doing wrong and how do I fix it? Would Final Cut Express 4 fix the problem and minimize the workarounds that I need to get HD video to display properly in iMovie?

in iDVD, instead of "Share to iDVD", Share to Media Browser, at the highest resolution, i think they call it "HD". That will import it into a .mov file (that now resides within the iMovie project file). Open up iDVD and open up Media browser then iMovie and you should fine that version there. Drag it into iDVD and make the DVD. The "share to iDVD" option looks like "caca". This version, while hardly HD, looks a LOT better and may be tolerable. DVD by definition, is a compression, I would not dummy down your camera, that could only make it worse. I'm not sure about the black lines. You exported it (from camera to iMovie) at the 16:9 ratio I assume?

  • Canon HF200 with FCP - importing footage problems

I apologise first if this is a common problem but I have searched away with no avail. I cant get the footage off this Canon HF200 I have been given to use...
In the log and transfer window if I try to drag the mounted camera drive into the window (or any of the files within) I get the error:
"BDMV" contains unsupported media or has an invalid directory structure. Please choose a folder whose directory structure matches supported media.
If I try to add the mounted disk on the log and capture widow - it does not allow me to select the disk. I am using the HF200 plugged in as opposed to just the SDHC card...
    Any ideas? FCP 7

thanks for your response...what happened was when I went to add volume - then select the mounted Camera/Card I could click on the drive but then the selector would 'pop-off' and jump to another drive...strange behaviour
I switched SDHC cards in the camera and the other card I have - when I open Log and Transfer - simply crashes FCP. If I eject the disk and re-open FCP and Log and Transfer - it doesnt crash and I can scroll thru available volumes...
Having re-entered the first SDHC card - I can now open Log and capture and select the NO NAME volume - it very briefly thought about it (in the process box below) and then nothing happened and it didnt accept....
I just updated using software update also...

  • Log & Transfer issues with Canon HF200

I'm trying to import about 150 short videos from my canon HF200 camera. Although it doesn't have a firewire connection (it's through USB), it does record AVCHD. When I plug the camera in to my computer, it is recognized in the finder window. However, no options show up to allow me to import from the camera. And, when I open FCE, the camera is not registering in the FCE Log and Transfer window. The clips aren't even there. I have been reading forums all night and I'm at my wit's end.
I'm using Snow Leopard, FCE 4.0.1, and everything seems adequately updated. Please help me figure out what I'm going wrong!

    Hi -
    1) Are you confident that your footage on your camera is in the HD format? Log and Transfer does not work with footage that is shot as Standard Definition.
    2) Have you tried to navigate to the camera manually using the Add Volume Button on the upper right?
    3) Have you tried removing the memory card and attempting to access it through a memory card reader?
    Thanks

  • Import from Canon HF200 stalls

When importing 1080i clips, 30 sec. clips behave normally, but 10-11 minute clips start normally then freeze with about 15% imported. The program (iMovie) quits responding and has to be force quit. If the import is stopped before the freeze, nothing is imported. The same behavior occurs with our 2.5GHz MacBook Pro which has 191GB free on the hard drive. We have switched from Full to Large on the import size with no change. What might we be doing wrong?

Sorry to hear you're having problems. I don't have any suggestions, except to say that I have the same exact camcorder and it works flawlessly with iMovie 09. So the camcorder CAN work, unless maybe there's something wrong with its USB interface or something.
I guess here's one thing you could try: if you have a memory card reader, take the SDHC card out of the camcorder and put it into the card reader. Once your Mac has mounted the SDHC card as a volume, iMovie should "see" it as an import device as well. See if you can get iMovie to import that way. If it works, then I'd guess there's something wrong with the USB interface on the camera.
    Good luck!

  • New Sequence settings using Canon HF200

Hi- after looking around online and getting some conflicting info, I thought I'd come here and get the right answer.
When creating a new sequence, you want to choose a preset that closely matches what you filmed- correct?
I have some footage that I am editing.  It was filmed using a framerate of 60i.
What preset should I choose when creating a new sequence?

    You answered your own question:
When creating a new sequence, you want to choose a preset that closely matches what you filmed- correct?
    Instead of closely, use EXACTLY.

  • Snow/Canon HF200 - Only iPhoto recognizes the camera - not iMovie

Before upgrading to Snow Leopard, my camera folder would show up in the finder, and iPhoto would launch automatically. Now with Snow, iPhoto still opens automatically, but the folder doesn't show up. Neither is the video camera recognized in iMovie. Please help!

You can always just transfer manually, the files from your camera onto the computer. If an icon appears on your desktop, when you connect the camera, you can always double-click on that icon to open it and then just locate the video files and Drag and Drop them into iMovie, or use FILE > IMPORT.

  • Import MTS video from Canon Vixia HF200 to iMovie

I am a recent convert from Windows to Mac. I was surprised to find out that my old MPG video taken over the years, and recent high definition video taken with a reasonably new Canon movie camera in MTS format, could not be easily imported into iMovie on my MacBook Pro, something that was quite easy on my Windows 7 computer. iMovie could not read the files. I purchased the new MacBook due to its capability to produce, among other things, superior movies for family use, You Tube, and similar. I bought the Canon HF200 as it recorded to a SDHC disk that made it easy, at least on my Windows computer, to transfer unedited files to my external hard drive storage system, then edit as necessary on any of the commonly available movie rendering software programs. After some internet research on the problem, and not wanting to give up on my Mac so soon, I solved the dilemma by purchasing a software package called iSkysoft Video Converter which made the conversion from MTS as well as my older MPG and all other video formats that I had, virtually seamless. In doing further research, it appears that I can convert my MTS video to either MP4 (M4V) or MOV without any degration that I could notice. I understand that there are other software packages that also convert video in a similar manner. My criticism is that with Apple's very good reputation as an excellent computer to be used for video and other media production, why is it necessary to perform this added step. While I was able to make a good conversion, the process just adds extra files and extra time to taking a movie, then producing a video.

  • CANON HF20 or HF200 - Want to buy - is it compatible with my mac - see belo

    Looking to buy CANON HF200.
    Own imovie 08, FCexpress 3.5.1.
    MAC OS 10.4.11
We experimented with the sony handycam HDR CX100 - but the cnet reviews are really hot for the canon HF 20 or HF200.
The sony video didn't import the flash memory thru FCE, but i sidestepped that by importing thru IMOVIE 08. then imported to FCE - which btw, cut the quality from 1920i to 1440
how will the HF 200 do? Can i import the video straight to FCE 3.5.1?
    Thanks.

    Does it shoot AVCHD ?
If so you will need FCE 4 and an Intel Mac otherwise it won't work.

  • HF200 and Final Cut Pro

I just purchased an HF200 camcorder for my video needs. I hook up the camcorder through usb and open up Final Cut. I then proceed to use the log and transfer function to transfer my video files. No luck nothing shows up and when I try to add the folder from my camera nothing happens. after about 5 mins of leaving the log and transfer window up my camera all of a sudden shows up and all of my videos are there and everything works great. It will do the exact same thing in imovie. You have to sit and wait about 5-10 mins before the camera shows up. I've tried this on multiple computers with the same thing happening everytime.
Not sure if there is anything I am doing wrong or if there is some settings that I need to change. But i would love not to have to wait forever for my videos to mount up. Any help would be greatly appreciated. If any other suggestion on a way to get my .mts video files to my computer to edit that would help to. I'm trying to maintain exact picture quality and resoulution
I am running Final Cut Pro 6.0.5 and iMovie 08 My camera is a Canon HF200
    thanks,
    Josh

Hey man, Im currently borrowing a friends HF200 to see if I like it. Was up to 4am last night trying to get it sorted for use with Final Cut Pro 6.0.2. I had similar problems with it not being detected by imovie 08 or Final Cut Pro's log and transfer.
I got it working on imovie 08 after i reformatted the sd card, no delays or anything. Final Cut Pro is still no go though (which I really want, to avoid quality loss). I will try leaving log and transfer on for a few minutes and see if anything happens, like you said.
Have you got your issues sorted since you posted in June?
    Cheers, Andy
