Canon HG10 Video Capture

I've purchased a Cannon HG10 HD Video camera, and cannot seem to get the hard drive to show up on my desktop in order to transfer my video from the camera to the computer. (USB 2.0 cable connection) I've done this before with a Sony Hard Drive camera, and it works fine.
I attach the USB cable, and the camera's HD image never shows up on the desktop. Does anyone have any idea what I might be doing wrong? I can't imagine that you simply cannot transfer video from Canon's latest model HD Camcorder to a macintosh.
Frustrated ... please help.
Thanks

I hope this helps. I purchased the HG10 today and was able to get it to work. I am running 10.5.2 that should now have support for the HG10. First make sure that your cam is in "player mode" next connect to your MAC. Once you do this you should see it mount as a external drive. If this happens open up iMovie and as soon as it loads it will say device detect and it should load with a preview with all your movies on your HG10. From there just select import and let it rip.
My only complaint is that I wish this cam was firewire because it will take some time to upload if you have a lot of content. A side not is the the cam will not be detected from iMovie HD which was the first application I tried it with assuming that this would work being the HG10 captures in HD but this is not the case.
Let me know how this works out for you....

  • Canon S100 Photo Capture Time Correct, but Video Capture Time Is Wrong

I have a Canon S100 and just started importing photos and video into my LR 4.3 catalog. I convert RAW to DNG, and the Capture Time on the photos in LR is correct. However, the video Capture Time is shifted forward exactly 8 hours. I know how to correct the video Capture Time, but is there anything I can do to stop this from happening in the first place?
I looked at what the metadata looks like in Bridge.
    PHOTO:
Date Created = Correct Capture Time
Date File Modified = The time I imported the file into LR.
    VIDEO:
Date Created = Capture Time + 8 hours
Date File Modified = Correct Capture Time
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide!

In general, LR doesn't know how to read video metadata.  It uses the file's date-modified (as set by the operating system) for filtering, sorting, and pre-populating the Metadata > Edit Capture Time dialog, but it uses the file's date-created (as set by the operating system) to display in the grid view.
So you might look for a file utility that lets you set the file's date-created to be the same as the file's date-modified (note that on Windows, at least, copying a file changes the date-created but preserves the date-modified).

  • Premiere Pro 1.5.1 HDV VIDEO CAPTURE - Canon HV20

    Hi,
For the life of me I cannot get my camera to capture in HDV. I can switch over to DV and it will capture everything just fine. The settings I recorded in are HDV standard, Widescreen 29fps. Not the 24. But it just tells me the device is ofline no matter what I try. I grabbed a stand alone CineForm HDLink and that doesn't detect it either. Any help would be greatly appreciated. The Client wants HD, not DV.
Premiere Pro 1.5.1 HDV VIDEO CAPTURE - Canon HV20 firewire
    Thanks in advance!

Ok, I spoke to soon. I kept searching and searching.  Finally found this..
    http://www.hv20.com/showthread.php?t=12131
My camera was locked in DV mode. So I had to switch it to HDV/DV
"b) As many have said you need to be sure that the camera is set ot output in HDV, and not DV locked. Because I am a bit of a dunce I found it difficult to locate that, even with the manual so here are some foolproof instructions on how to get there:
    in "Play" Mode > FUNC > MENU > PLAY/OUT SETUP2 > DV OUTPUT [set this to HDV/DV]"
    That did it.

  • Canon HG10 and sequence/project file settings FCP6.x

I have previously transferred footage from my Canon HG10 into FCP6.x and had it play back fine. I just transferred in some more footage and when I layer the clips the playback freezes. Now, I'll admit I'm a novice in the HD game so let me know if my settings are all wrong:
    Sequence is set to:
    frame size - 1440 x 1080
    aspect ration - HD (1440 x 1080) (16:9)
    pixel aspect ratio - HD (1440 x 1080)
    field dominance - upper (Odd)
    compressor - Apple ProRes 422
    quality - 100%
Under the "advanced" tab it is set to interlace at 29.97
    The audio/video settings are:
    sequence preset: apple prores 422 1440 x 1080 60i 48 khz
    capture preset: HDV apple prores
    device control preset: HDV firewire
video playback: digital cinema desktop preview - full screen
    audio playback: default
    Recently updated QT to 7.6.4
    Running FCP 6..0.6 on a G5 2 x 3GHz Quad-Core Intel Xeon tower with 8GB 800 MHzDDR2 FB-DIMM
    In other words, HELP!

OK, doing some more research. When I look at the clip properties it is listed as 1920x1080 1.0 29.97i UFF, not progressive. If I go to Modify Clip the field order is listed as Field Order from File: Upper Field First and I have the option to Conform to: Progressive Scan
I'm confused because I thought i Interlaced was for broadcast TV and progressive was better for editing on a timeline for things like web video, adding effects and combining with other footage.
Should I modify the clip to be progressive you think? Another question, if I just change the Sequence Settings to be AVCHD 1080p is that enough or would I still need to modify the clip as well? It's so hard to find this info on Adobe's site or in any books.
Not sure why Canon would list the setting as progressive but it is wrapped as interlaced. After Googling I see this is the case and I'm not the only one who has noticed this, but I see no recommendations.
    Thanks.

  • How to make AVCHD 1080i run smoothly in PE 12, I'm using a Canon HG10

Hi I'm a nwbie on here and not sure how things work.
I have a Canon HG10  AVCHD ,video camera and when I load it into PE12 it is really jerky, I'm downloading as 1080i if that helps, the program is rendering it as it uploads it, but still plays jerky, if I play the video through my media player on the same computer it plays lovely and smooth.
    Any help would be appreiciated.
    Dave

Your computer is a bit underpowered for AVCHD editing. But, if your project is being set up properly by Premiere Elements (which it is, if you're not seeing a yellow line along the top of the timeline in Expert view), you should be able to do basic editing.
Most likely you've got something in the background interferring with your playback. This could be antivirus software, your firewall or Windows Indexing -- or possibly some background program or even malware.
What antivirus program are you using? Norton antivirus is notorious for dragging systems down.
If you open your Task Manager with no other programs open on your computer, how many background processes does it list as running?
Have you manually gone to Windows Update and ensured you have all of the Windows AND Microsoft Updates, including those that do not install automatically? When did you last run Disk Cleanup and Disk Defragmenter?

  • 1080p live video capture from camcorder to MacBook

Is there a device or adapter that will connect the 1080p from a video camcorder's HDMI out to a MacBook's thunderbolt or usb port with QuickTime receiving the camcorder's video and audio when "New Movie Recording" is selected from that application?
Or more succinctly, can I turn my 1080p camcorder into a webcam?
Camcorders have better image quality than webcams (okay, maybe not necessarily JVC, but Canon's do) and more features, such as 38x zoom.   And my MacBook has a much nicer and bigger screen than that little LCD fold-out piece all camcorders have.   So combining the superior video capture of the camcorder with the superior display capability of the MacBook along with the advantage of live recording directly to the MacBook's harddrive (no intermediate SD card file transfer step from device to device) would result in an enhanced video capturing experience.   All that is required is some adapter that will take HDMI from the camera and translate it into something the MacBook will see as a webcam (usb or thunderbolt).   So where do I find such an adapter?

What brand and model is your camcorder?
From this we can determine what format it outputs in, because you capture with the output format from your camcorder. You then, after editing, use PRE to Share your project as MPEG2.
These are the import video sources supported by PRE:
If your camcorder manual is telling you that it outputs MPEG2 (this is a standard definition format) try the 'DVD Camcorder or PC DVD Drive' format.

How do I import HD video from the camera to Premiere Pro CS3

The Canon HG10 records AVCHD for HD video, Premiere Pro CS3 doesn't support that natively.

  • Import/Export Settings for Canon T4i Video

    Hey folks,
I'm new to Premiere and loving it, but I'm wondering what the best sequence settings, as well as export settings, will be for video captured from my Canon Rebel T4i camera.
I prefer to shoot either in 1080p with 24 fps, or 720p at 60 fps––what settings within premiere should I use when setting up my project, and what are some good export options for Youtube/Vimeo?

  • Canon HG10 users...any way to 'clone' the HG10's HDD?

I'm using a Canon HG10, with Final Cut Express 4.0, which imports the AVCHD video via the 'log and transfer' utility, which transcodes it into AIC. This utility will not import .mts files that are in other locations (ie. I can't just drag a .mts file to my external hard drive, and import it later on).
I've read that this is due to the file/folder structure of the HG10's HDD.
    Question:
Is there any way to create a disk image, or otherwise make a storage place for .mts files so that FCE will import them at a later date?
Ie. I want to free up space on the camera's HDD, yet not have to go through all the transcoding, saving, ect. on FCE. Thanks in advance.
    -Nick

Not sure if a related question, but also own HG10. I cannot even get the computer to recognize my HG10. From my understanding Canon has no software prepackaged with the camera to accomplish this. Where do I go from here.

  • Canon HG10 :Merging mov files and output on a Mac

    Hi,
I'm on MacOSX 10.5.8 and currently working on a little video project.
I must admit my ignorance on the subject is comparable to my grandma asking how to send an email. So please be nice
I have several .mov videos imported from my Canon HG10 at the highest resolution (which according to Quicktime Movie Inspector is 1888x1062 - FPS 29.97).
Now I need to a) merge all of them into one file and b) convert the output onto a much lighter but still good quality format (H.264 mp4?).
I spent a good few hours on iMovie but since I don't need to edit the video it looked like I was pretty much wasting my time.
Could anyone give me a quick 1-2-3 on how to do the above (hopefully there's some "lamers" solution out there)?
    Cheers!

    Here's Avids answer:
Pro50 codecs only work in Macs, so the original files need to be EXPORTED from FCP with a special codec Avid created for Mac.
So that's that issue solved ... hopefully, let's see after the next export.
But .mov files are still screwed up on my PC.
Kirk - I did reboot the machine in SafeMode, reinstalled QT, but nope - version 7.2. still doesn't play any .mov files properly that are stored on my C-drive that previously were just fine.
    Thanks again.

  • Video capture quality loss

I am having a major problem with video capture resulting in poor quality playback. I am capturing from a canon HV20 into an firewire 400 500 Gig hard drive. I am getting vertical distortion on the capture. When I look at the camera screen or output to a TV, everything is sharp.
My question is what would be causing this? Do you think that eSATA would solve it? I am waiting on my new eSATA card to arrive in the mail, and that will be hooked up to the external.

    Hi T-Frangoo-
Greetings and welcome to the Apple boards
This is exactly how I do it. I use a cheap Canon camera as a playback deck so as to save wear and tear on the ol' XL2.
    Luck-

  • Canon Camcorder not capturing to Firewire Drive

I am a recent convert to the new FCE from iMovie '08, and have been editing video in FCE for a couple weeks.
Today I tried to capture video from my Canon zr850 camcorder (miniDV) to my "MyBook" external Firewire Drive for the first time using FCE (I have had no problems doing this using iMovie). Each time I tried, the capture stopped after a couple seconds and I got the message "locating timecode break".
As an added bit of info, I am able to control my camcorder remotely through FCE with no problems.
After doing some research on the Apple Discussion Pages, I came across a reference to a problem that Canon camcorders have in having video captured directly to a FireWire Drive. So I tried capturing the video to my iMac hard drive and it worked!
So while I have found the short-term fix to my problem, I do not want to continue capturing to my hard drive.
Does anyone know what is going on?
    Thanks in advance...

Things apparently work better on separate buses. On my iMac there is only one bus, but then I only have two FW400 ports. Whether or not you have problems depends on which camera it is and which external drives you use. I have had good luck with my Canon XH-A1 and LaCie, Buffalo, and Maxtor external drives, though I seem to have more trouble when I have more than two external drives connected simultaneously.
Give it a whirl and see how it goes.
