Canon HV20 HDV Camcorder and FCE / Firewire

Hey Folks:
I just got off the phone with B&H Photo, one of the larger camera companies. After a long call, the guys feel the HV20 will be a pretty good choice as a DV camera. I can't seem to confirm whether is firewire, I know it's USB however. Anyone know?
Thanks
FFF

Hi(Bonjour!
See this link for a HV20 review:
http://reviews.cnet.com/digital-camcorders/canon-hv20-mini-dv/4505-6500_7-321726 25.html
IE-1394 is the generic name for firewire (a term specific to Apple world). HV 20 use this protocol.
Here's features that you have to check to get the best image quality:
3 CCD or 3 CMOS, unlockable manual adjustment for: white balance, shutter speed, iris, gain, focus, zoom ring. Long lasting battery. Tape based system, input for audio jack 1/8 or better: XLR. Large lens opening for low light condition.
The form factory is also a consideration. A bulkier camcorder tends to be more steady in the hand.

  • Capturing AVCHD video from a Canon VIXIA HG21 camcorder to FCE 4.01

Video captured at the highest resolution MXP i60 seems to stutter after importing to FCE 4.01. I know that playback on a computer monitor will show these signs but after burning with iDVD and played on a TV set, it still is jerky when panning a moving image.
I've read most of the posts concerning this. I have read that FCE will only accept 29.97 frame rates in several posts and other posts show "i60 presets support both 60i and 29.97 frame rates".
I read where I should reset my FCE preferences but I don't seem to have any. I looked in Library Preferences and could not find a "com.apple.finalcutexpress.plist" or the "final Cut Express User Data" folder.
Sure could use some help from those who use that camcorder and FCE.

I also shoot and edit with the HG21 but haven't experienced any such problems. Do your sequence settings match your clip settings in every regard? You definitely shot in 60i and not 30p? Did you fully render your sequence before exporting?
I've found there's a lot of interlacing when panning quickly, but it hasn't been jerky for me. Does it appear this way on the camera too? It may have been that you did not pan smoothly enough (such as with a good tripod).

  • HD-camcorder and FCE-HD

Will the new Canon HV-20 work with FCE-HD ver. 3.5.1?

Thanks Tom. I guess I should have asked if I should go HD. I mainly video tape my 2 daughters soccer games and have a High School trip to England for soccer. How difficult is it to switch to HD for SD? I have read some of the previous posts and it does not seem as intuitive as I thought. I do basic action editing and do not plan on getting a HD burner until the prices drop. I need a new camcorder and just thought it was time to go HD! Thanks for any suggestions. By the way, if anyone has had a great experience with any new camcorder I would love to hear reccomendations.

  • Canon 5D Mark II and FCE

Can you use the new Canon 5D Mk II with FCE. Do you use import or log and transfer? Use the Apple Intermediate Codec? I've only used AVCHD before.

    Thanks for clarification
I did tried MPEG Streamclip conversion into Apple Intermediate format but .. abandomed it.
It did help indeed with preview without rendering and overall make it easier to edit, but I find out serious quality drop in final movie.
When I compared RAW - out of camera movie with converted into Apple Intermediate - AIC introduced quality drop - especially visible in shadows (a lot of night shots I did recently).
Now, even its more painful to do edit (but I am just doing basic cuts+ transitions), I take RAW 5D2 files, put it in FCE, do my manipulation and extport it using Quicktime converter to MPEG-4 (still with H264 codec) to be able to view it on my PS3. In that way I retain the best quality (comparable to original out of 5D2)
Is is only AIC problem? Is other transcoding (like cineform) better in term of quality drop?

  • FCE 4 with Powerbook G4 with Canon HV30 HDV Camcorder

Just enquiring if it will be possible to work together a combination of Powerbook G4 with memory of 1.25GB and 1.33 GHz PowerPC G4 Processor, together with FCE 4. Also adding into the mix the new HDV Canon HV30.
Have previously been using an SD camcorder with the G4 and iMovie HD to produce a few movies/DVDs, but now want to upgrade to the Canon HV30. I am concerned that the Canon may not be compatible with using the iMovie HD, so am considering FCE 4, but am also concerned that this may not run well on the G4 and may also not run together well with the Canon.
The G4 is still fine so don't really want to have to buy a new laptop as well as a new camera.
Am a bit new to all this so any help/suggestions much appreciated.

FCE 4 will work well on your computer ........ look at what I'm using.
The only slight problem is that you may not be able to access the new FxPlug filters but as many of them are like the old FxScript ones, it shouldn't be too much to do without.
I can't comment on the camera though I would have thought it to be OK. HDV may be a bit of a strain with your old Mac.

  • Canon VIXIAV HF series and FCE import.

    Hello Everyone,
With the Vixia HF series of camcorders they are recognized in iMove 09 however not so in FCE.
To remedy this and import your footage, use the log and transfer portion as identified in this article from the Canon Website. Although it is a bit dated, it actually works.
    http://www.usa.canon.com/consumer/controller?act=ModelInfoAct&fcategoryid=177&mo delid=17994#SupportDetailAct
Search for the following: How do I use my camcorder with Final Cut Studio 2?

I have a Vixia, but Log and Transfer wouldn't seem to see my files until I specifically browsed down to the folder that contained the mts files. Even then, Log and Transfer doesn't respond for about a minute or a minute and a half, then clips do start showing up. Unfortunately, it SEEMS like FCE isn't seeing the files and there is no feedback to the user. Frustrating, but at least it is faster than first importing the files iMovie.

  • Captuiring HDV straight into iMovie from Canon HV20?

Is it possible to do a long capture straight into iMovie on a G5 iMac?
I know we can do DV easily, but was wondering about the AIC/HDV issue.
Thanks for any insight I can pass on to students before they try it,

"..Does video shot on an HV20 have to be imported through an HV20? Or can I import by some other means?.."
You can import via some other camera which can play the same system you recorded with. In other words, you could import an HDV (hi-def) 30fps recording made with your Canon by putting that tape into a Sony HDV camcorder and importing it from the Sony.
However, if the Sony can't make sense of your 24fps recording (..and Sonys have their own way of "manufacturing" 24fps, by taking various fields from different video frames..) then it might import badly ..or may replay at twice the normal speed.
If you connect the camera, click on the apple logo at top-left of your screen and choose 'About This Mac' and then click on 'More Info...' and choose 'FireWire' in the left-hand column of 'System Profiler' ..does your camera show up there? If not, it may be that the FireWire port on your Canon isn't working properly ..or maybe you've a bad FireWire cable. I don't have an HV20, so I can't suggest any other ideas, sorry ..but use Search Discussions at top-right of this page to find out if others have had - and solved - this problem.

  • FME freezes when connecting Canon HV20 via firewire

Hoping someone can help me out. I'm using a Canon HV20 camera
as a live video stream via FME and every time I try FME will freeze
and my laptop will freeze and I have to restart. My camera settings
are DV standard and it should work.
The necessary drivers for the Canon HV20 are installed and
I'm using a firewire card in my PC laptop that to connect the
camera feed. Restarting several times still results in the same
    problems.
Is there something I should modify/check on my system to
    ensure it's working correctly?

    Some more troubleshooting tips.
    Cheers

  • Canon HV20 In Photo Mode Does Not Appear On Desktop ?

I can't think where else to post this and it is connected with an iMac!
Normally when I connect a digital still camera to my iMac via USB I get a "No Name" Hard Drive type icon on my desktop. The camera is basically just another HD. I can then open the icon and drag out the files.
However, when I connect my Canon HV20 HDV camera to the desktop, no icon appears.
The camera is set in Photo Mode and has an SD memory card so it is to all intents and purposes a digital still camera.
I can download my photos via iPhoto or Image Capture so it is no great problem but I feel convinced that the camera's icon should appear on the desktop just like any other still camera.
Has anyone had a similar experience or found a solution?

Thanks again Terence - you've done quite well out of this question!
Thanks for the confirmation den.thed. I normally use a reader but often with the HV20 I only have a handful of photos at a time to download and I don't want to wear out the contacts with overuse!

  • Canon S95 powershot HD video quality VS canon vixea M300 camcorder

    Hi all,
I shot some video with my Powershot S95, and imported to iMovie via iPhoto. I also imported a similar video sequence (bright light, portrait, white background) from a canon vixea m200 camcorder, and the quality of the still cameras video is WAY better than the camcorder. BEtter color and much clearer/sharper. Any reason why this would be the case? Does the still camera have a much better lens? Is it something to do with how iMovie is converting the format, if it is converting it? should i get rid of my video camera and shoot my videos with this or a better still camera? Or is there something I may not be doing correctly. The HD camcorder resolution is supposed to be better than the still camera. I have a week to return the camcorder if it's no good. Is anyone else using this kind of camera and getting good results?
    thank you so much!
    Josh

Final Cut will likely provide a minimal quality boost (as it uses a higher quality codec for importing AVCHD), but beyond that I don't think you'd find it worth your money. What specifically about your imported video looks "not as clear"? Remember that your camcorder screen is always going to look like a higher resolution than your computer due to it's size.
Also bear in mind that in order to properly burn HD content to a disc, you will need a Blu-ray burner and software that will burn it (Toast 10, for example). It is possible to burn small amounts of HD content on a normal DVD, but whether or not you can do this without purchasing Toast (or something more expensive like Final Cut Studio), I can't say.

  • New Canon HV10 HD Camcorder

I just purchased a Canon HV10 HiDef camcorder and am having problems capturing video in Final Cut Pro. I'm using the latest version of the software. I have changed the settings under final cut>easy setup> to HD1080i50. It goes through the whole capture process but when I hit escape it says there is an unknown error and won't capture. I'm able to capture video in iMovie, but then have to export in order to use the video in Final Cut Pro. Does anyone have any ideas? Thanks.

Please do not double post. Once is enough.

  • Flip Camcorder to FCE

What is the best way to take the videos from a Flip Ultra HD camcorder and be able to get the videos into FCE to be able to edit. Looks like the files are in MP4 when they enter FCE, but I'm tired of not being able to watch the edited videos because they are not rendered. I didn't have this issue using iMovie and I'm trying to learn how to use FCE.

I too am using the Flip Mino HD camcorder and FCE. I downloaded MPEG Streamclip and it worked perfectly.
I would love to learn more about the export options from Streamclip as it relates to Flip MPEG-4 video files. For example, I just chose the default Quick Time exporting method and the quality seemed to be decent. But I would like to get more exact with the type of exporting options of Streamclip.
Any suggestions on reading to help me learn more?

  • Canon UCS1 Hi8 Camcorder

I recently found an old Canon UCS1 Hi8 Camcorder and a charger for it. I fully charged the battery and when I went to test it out it would only turn on for 5-10 seconds and power off. Has anyone had a similar problem or know a soloution?
Also does anyone know where I can find an online manual?
    Thanks

    Hi Dwight_Chroot;,
The UCSI, which may be at the Canon Camera Museum (I had to look for it!) here" http://bit.ly/10jlp4q
Regrettably, the manual for this camera is no longer available.

  • FireWire is the only way to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?

As a followup to my last post a moment ago tonight 1/30/08:
Is it true that I need a FireWire cable to import Canon HV20 Camcorder videos into iMovie?
If so, the Apple salesperson is wrong.
He told me last Monday that purchasing the new iLife 2008 (that contains iMovie 2008) would allow me to use my current USB cable.
Given I see NO FireWire port on my new MacBook Pro (bought in 8/2006), I don't see a solution.
Note the camera, an HD camcorder (the Canon HV20) did NOT come with a FireWire cable; it only came with a USB male plug on one side of the cable and the other is a small square-like male plug that connects to a female port on the Canon HV20.
    Solution?
    Thanks for any suggestions, Daniel

The USB cable is for importing still photographs. Not video.
The firewire 400 cable you need is one that goes from the 6 pin full size male connector to the small 4 pin form used for DV.
The cable plugs into the camera in a socket behind a plastic flap near the eyepiece. Its marked HDV/DV. The other end plugs into the MBP on the right-hand side. 4th from the back.
