Canon i550 won't print with MacBook and Airport Extreme

Since we got a new MacBook, we upgraded our Airport Express (b/g) to Airport Extreme (n). Needed tech support from Apple to get the computers on the internet (something about the cable company switching IP addresses), which worked great, but since then the only problem is that I can't print wirelessly from the new MacBook to our Canon i550 printer, which is hooked up by USB to the Airport Extreme. (Ironically, when the internet wasn't working through the Airport Extreme, the one thing that DID work was printing wirelessly.) The other computer, a 2007 MacBook Pro, prints wirelessly with no problems, but I see that under "location" in the print utility it still has "Express" listed (on the MacBook I get the new network name, "Airport Extreme"). I've tried reselecting the printer in Bonjour, reselecting it in AirPort Utility under Printers, turning printer on and off, but no matter what, in the printer status box it just says "Connecting", and never actually prints. I just upgraded to 10.5.6 which still didn't help. Anyone have any thoughts? Thanks.

Welcome to the discussions, Brian!
Please work your way through the Apple Troubleshooting Guide to see if your HP might be compatible with the AirPort Express.
Keep in mind that if your device is compatible, only printing is supported at the USB port on the AirPort Express. So, if you need to scan, copy, fax or check ink levels, etc., you will need to hook the device directly to your computer.

  • PC Used to work with XP and airport Extreme Basestation but not with Vista

Please help, my PC Used to work with XP and airport Extreme Basestation but not now with Vista. I have a MacBook Pro connected and also a Mac Pro connected to the network on it and they still work, i have put the latest software on the PC and the firmware is up to date. The only thing i can see on the network on the PC is the basestation Hard Disk (shared also to the Macs) but i cannot connect with the password, i have tried everything in my knowledge, including formatting the machine and reinsatlling OS and changing security setting to no avail. Any ideas anyone?

  • Are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

are there any compatibility issues with Sonos and Airport extreme??

Sonos uses its own priopietory wireless protocol SonosNet to distribute audio data among all its products, thus it should not affect other network devices which use standard WiFi 802.11a/b/g/n protocol at all though they may share the same radio channel for wirless signaling.
On my dual-band (5 GHz / 2.4 GHz) Airport Extreme staion, I select the option "802.11n Only (5GHz) - 802.11n (2.4GHz)" and turn on "Use wide channels" in Wireless configuration in order to use only 802.11n protocol and more radio channels to achieve maximum wireless bandwidth of 400 Mbps. This bandwidth is necessary for quick Time Machine backup to NAS connected to the Airport Extreme station through Ethernet cable. So my iMac and MacBook Pro always connected to the Airport Extreme through 5 GHz radio channel with 802.11n protocol whereas my iPhone 4S always connected through 2.4 GHz radio channel with the same protocol.
In my living room Sonos ZP-90 (same as new CONNECT model) zone player is connected to Airport Extreme directly through Ethernet cable (recommended by Sonos) and Sonos S5 (same as new PLAY:5 model) zone player in bedroom is connected wirelessly through SonosNet protocol to the ZP-90 zone player in living room.
These devices are in operation simutaneouly most of the time. Music is playing through the Sonos ZP90/S5 zone players througout the day, I am streaming viedo through Internet (fibre broadband 25 Mbps) on my MacBook Pro in bedroom or iMac in living room or reading news on my iPhone. So far so good and have no encounter any interference problem for about three years. Further more bandwidth for 802.11n protocol does not seem to be affected at all.
In fact with a low power Fujitsu USB drive (2.5" / 500 GB, designed for notebook) plug into USB port of Airport Extreme, it can be used as NAS drive for Sonos music distribution system without any problem. Just transfer all files from Music folder in my home directory on iMac into this NAS drive and set it up as music source in "Manage > Music Library Settings" in Sonos Controller for Mac application will do. Though the same drive can be served as Time Machine's backup disk as well, an independent full-fledged NAS drive for Sonos and Time Machine backup is better long-term solution for reliability and performance. With the NAS configured as sole music source, you do not need to keep any computer powered on all the time in order to play music through the Sonos system.

  • Canon MF8050cn won't print with Lion ?

    Hi anyone,
I'm pulling my hair trying to get this new printer working with my Mother's new iMac and have failed for the past 6-weeks!
I have followed all sorts of suggestions found here and elsewhere - and none of which have worked!
The printer is connected directly to the USB port and I'm simply trying to add it using the Canon UFR II LT v2.3 driver but it never communicates with printer.
Seems like there is a fundamental incompatibilty between this printer and Lion?
any suggestions, I haven't resorted to a firmware update yet, but maybe I should be looking at this too?
This has been a horrible time wasting experience for both her and me.

One of the problems I have encountered with the UFR2 driver is that it relies heavily on a background service and if this fails to run it will cause printer issues. So the first thing to check is that this "UFR II Backgrounder" service is running on the iMac. Open Activity Monitor and scroll down the list. Do you see this service?
Also, I cannot tell from your post if you have managed to add the printer and that the issue is that it won't print, or you have not been able to add the printer. If you have been able to add the printer but cannot print, then open System Information and select the Printers entry listed under Hardware. In the top right pane will be the installed printers and if you select the MF8050, the bottom right pane will show information about the print queue. Can you copy this information and post it back here please.

  • Canon MF4150 won't print when connecting through AP Extreme

I have a MacBook 2.16 about 2 weeks old. I've bought an Airport Extreme and am trying to connect my Canon MF4150 into it but whenever I print it just won't happen. The print queue just shows the jobs as "stopped" and I cannot restart them.

The one other user on the network is using Vista and is printing fine to the printer. I'm using print driver 1.5 from the Canon website.
Any thoughts or help you can give would be appreciated.

You won't be able to get this combination working. There is something about the Canon UFR2 driver that doesn't 'see' the AEBS USB connected printer. Have a read of my posting on the Airport forum.

  • Printing With XP And Airport

I installed Bonjour For Windows and my Epson printer was recognized and made the default printer. It seems that everything is set up right, but it just doesn't print. No errors or anything like that reported. It works OK in OSX.
I have a MacBook Pro and use Airport and my printer is hooked to that via USB.
Everything else in Bootcamp with Windows XP works fine, just this problem.
Is there something else I should do?
Thanks a lot for your help.

For those others who might be having the same problem, I found this: The printer you're trying to use with Windows needs to have a name of 15 characters or less.
    http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=306514
When I renamed my default printer "EPSON" in the printer and fax control panel, down from "Epson Stylus CX9400Fax Series" which is the name of the driver and was put in by the Printer Wizard, it gave me a new Printer Wizard window. I just selected the driver and everything works well. Then I just deleted the old printer icons from the printer and fax control panel. End of problem.

  • Setting up new printer with currently inactive AirPort Extreme

Is it possible to share a printer with 4 laptops using an Airport Extreme while another router provides the internet?
    Here's what I have:
    - Linksys WRT54GS wireless G router (in use)
    - AirPort Extreme (older & not currently in use)
    - MacBook Pro (running OS 10.5.3)
    - 3 Dell XPS m1710 laptops (running Windows XP)
    - Old Dell Dimension (running Fedora Linux)
    - Dell 1110 printer
    - Canon i80 printer (w/ Bluetooth adapter)
    - HP Photosmart printer
I want to be able to print with the Dell 1110 printer from any laptop. I looked to connect it to the Linksys router but the router does not have a USB slot - the AirPort Extreme does. Is this a possibility?
Also, the Linksys router MUST stay. I'm sure many will suggest dropping it in favor of the AirPort extreme but this is not a possibility.
    Thank you =)

Thanks for the help, I'm definitely getting there
I changed the settings as you've described and can now print from my MBP. The 3 Dell laptops are another matter. Would you have any idea what the IP address of the printer would be? Or the AirPort Extreme? I'm following this tutorial:
    http://www.ifelix.co.uk/tech/1004.html
without much success but I'm really guessing at the IP address. I've tried 192.168.1.1 (my router) and 192.168.1.101 (the IPv4 address) with no luck. I suspect it's the IP address that's the problem ...
    Any thoughts?
    Thanks

  • Can't print from Macbook via Airport Extreme.

I have just got myself a White Macbook and have it connected to my Airport Extreme. I already have an imac connected and everything is working fine internet wise but if I try and print from the macbook via the imac a window comes up saying 'Canon MP610 series @ newimac - connecting to xxxx-xxxxx-computer.local. on port631...' but nothing else happens. My firewall setting on the imac is at 'Allow only essential services'. If I change it to 'Allow all incoming connections' the printer works. I do have printer sharing switched on in both machines. Any help gratefully received. Thanks, Kevin

Try changing your firewall settings to set access for specific applications and services. This should allow printer sharing, while still keeping things blocked that you don't want.

  • New macBook and Airport Extreme Connection to a Classic iMac

I have an iMac Power PC 750 (32.24) operating with OS X v. 10.3.4. I currently am hooked into the internet with a Siemens Speedstream 420 DSL modem. I plan to buy a new macBook and want to use it with a wireless router. According to the information in the Apple catalog, the current Airport Extreme Base Station will not operate on the version of OS X that I have available in my Classic iMac.
If I buy the new Airport Extreme router, can I set up the Airport Extreme router using the new macBook and simply connect my Classic iMac to the internet using the ethernet port on the Airport Extreme router and an ethernet cable. The iMac does not have an Airport card.
    Thanks

Yes, it is fairly simple, but that is relative to your familiarity and experience. You use the AirPort Utility and it walks you through the basic set up. You have the option to manually configure additional detailed or advanced features at any time later. Enable the WPA2 Personal encryption, that will require wireless clients to enter a password, there is also a feature to turn off broadcast or stealth mode, I don't remember what they call it exactly now, so that the network name is not broadcast for additional security, so to connect you have to manually enter the WiFi network name and password. I bought an open-box unit, which was actually used/returned and had already been set up with a network name and password, so I had to perform a factory reset, it took a couple of tries to get it to reset, but then it worked fine.
The default internet configuration should work when you hook everything up, most of the time. It usually searches all available network ports until it finds one available, but you may specify particular settings when you are at home, at work, or at a public hot-spot, or dial-up, so you can manually connect to the preferred method, or change the order in which it searches, so as not to wait for the computer to search for a connection that isn't available, or sometimes get confused thinking it might be available and continue to wait. You use System Preferences: Network to control this. Create a new Location, then look at the Network Port Configurations, you can deselect the ones that don't apply, so on the iMac you would have only the Built-in Ethernet active, but on the MacBook you would use the AirPort. You can drag these around so the preferred one is on top of the list.
Most wireless routers will work fine with both Macs and PCs, I bring a Dell home from work and use it fine on my AirPort. The AirPort Utility on the CD can be installed on a XP/Vista PC also. Conversely, some non-Apple third-party router web-based configuration utilities may require Internet Explorer that might not work with Safari on the Mac.
"The way to go," depends on your needs. Check the specs for total number of wired ports, max number of wireless ports, speed, range, etc. for what you think will satisfy your needs for your network. The AirPort Extreme Base Station may have a higher price tag than some other brand wireless routers, but it works great and has some unique features such as the shared USB port for printer or USB disc sharing. Other than sharing the internet connection, you will also be able to share a printer and the hard drives, iTunes libraries, and even remotely control one computer from the other using a Virtual Network Computer software like Chicken of the VNC.

  • Internet trouble using Macbook and Airport extreme

I have a new Macbook and an older airport extreme base station. I'm trying to access the internet with a dial-up connection, however, after the base station dials the number it gets hung up on "connecting to your ISP" and I can't surf the net. I've contacted my ISP and they said that the connection is fine. I've tried everything that I can think of......please help...
    Jesse

I set it up using the cd that came with it and 90% of the time it is unable to make connections to the internet.
Unless something has changed recently, I'm not aware that Linksys provides a CD setup for Macs. However, you can access the Linksys's setup via a web browser, like Safari.
My question is can I just buy a airport extreme base station and hook it up to her dsl and use it as a stand alone?
You certainly could and it would work just fine.
Does it need any other equipment other that the base station and a wireless macbook?
You will just need an Ethernet cable to connect the AEBS to the DSL modem.

  • DNS Server Issues with Comcast and Airport Extreme wifi routers

I am having significant challenges with 3 Airport Extreme (latest gen) wifi routers and my Comcast Xfinitity service.  It once worked just fine, but now I continually get the blinking amber lights stating "No DNS servers" for each of the Airport Extreme (AE) routers.  My configuration is:
Coax cable -> Comcast Xfinity cable modem -> ethernet to 16-port gigabit ethernet switch ->->-> ethernet to 3 Airport Extremes around the house direct connected with switch
I have many wifi devices throughout the house (iPads, MacBooks, home automation devices) as well as direct-connected devices via ethernet (one PC connected to AE router).
Each Airport Extreme router is set with these settings in the Airport Utility app:
    Internet tab=  Connect using: DHCP
Wireless tab=  Network mode: Create a wireless network
Network tab=   Router mode: Off (Bridge Mode)
I have attempted to put the Xfinity cable modem in bridge mode, and use the Airport Extreme to serve up the IP addresses, but still lost internet connectivity.
I have also attempted to set the Network tab=> Router Mode to "DHCP and NAT" but get "Double NAT" error issues as well.
I have tried using the Comcast DNS server addresses (75.75.75.75;75.75.76.76) setting on the Internet tab for the routers and do end up getting a green light, but NO internet connectivity.
Lastly, I have tried using the Google DNS servers (8.8.8.8;8.8.4.4) setting on the Internet tab the routers giving me the No DNS servers amber light error and again, no Internet connectivity for either wifi-connected or even ethernet connected (directly to Airport Extreme router) devices (like my PC) despite getting a green light on the router.
Any this point, it really seems that these AE routers are NOT compatible with the Xfinity cable modem or service… (and yes, I've tried power-cycling and restarting the modem, and then the AE routers, MANY times to little avail).
Should I move one of these Airport Extreme wifi routers to before the switch, and have the other 2 in Bridge mode after the switch?  Do I need to setup a specific range of DHCP reservation addresses for each different AE router?
Appreciate any insight anyone can share with this aggravating DNS server issue between Comcast & multiple Airport Extreme wifi routers.

I do not see anything wrong with your basic setup.. the issue is indeed the WAN ports of the AE.. AC version are having problems with some network equipment.
You have listed a stack of things you have tried.. but I want you to move the ethernet patch cable you use on each AE to its LAN port instead of WAN.
Restart the airport when you do that.. and then see if it becomes stable.
In bridge mode the airport moves the WAN port to LAN.. but the WAN port setup itself seems more problematic than the LAN ports.
There are other methods we can try if this does not work.. but in the end.. I would be tempted to take the whole lot back to apple.. they need to start making equipment that works with standard modems and switches.
BTW what brand is the 16 port switch?? Does it happen to be managed (smart type)?

  • Sharing a usb 4G connection through a macbook and airport extreme

Currently the only 4G LTE modems for sale are of the usb type. I would like to share a 4g connection with a group of people. Is there any way I could use a 4G LTE usb modem from verizon to share internet with a bunch of people through wifi, possibly using an airport extreme?

    Hi,
The easiest way is probably to look for a dedicated mobile broadband router. An alternative solution involving an AirPort Extreme base station would require a special adapter for the connection of a USB modem to the WAN Ethernet port.
    See, for example:
    http://www.cradlepoint.com/
    http://www.dovado.com/
Whether a mobile broadband router or a special adapter, always make sure that there is support for the exact USB modem type and the network in question.

  • Canon Pixma MP500 Printer won't print with MacBook Pro

I just bought a brand new MacBook Pro to replace an older PowerBook G4 laptop. I have a relatively new printer - maybe one year old - a Pixma MP500 from Canon that worked fine with the old laptop. I can't seem to get it to work with the new MacBook. I can use it as a scanner no problem with the new laptop, but not as a printer. I installed the software from the original Canon CD, but when I go to "add printer" MP500 shows up in the list as a USB printer but won't add. When I try to add it I get a -9672 error. Anyone out there with any idea what to do?

Hi, I actually did tried doing exactly that (should have mentioned it in my first email) and just tried it once more for good measure, but I still get the error message when I go to add the printer. So, MP500 shows up in my printer name list, with USB as the connection type, and print using shows Canon IJ Printer, but when I go to add I get "An error occurred while trying to add the selected printer. Error: -9672". Help!

  • Canon i550 won't print wirelessly from iBook

I have a desktop PC and a new iBook which I believe should be able to print wirelessly through my Linksys router. [The iBook replaced a laptop PC which was able to print wirelessly. Of course they both were XP 2 systems.] I think I have set things up properly but perhaps not. When asked to print the system accepts the command and a light blinks on the printer but nothing happens. Any suggestions welcome.
    iBookG4 Mac OS X (10.4.5)

Canon (and all non-postscript printer manufacturers except Brother) does not provide drivers that can use all the comm protocols that OS X and CUPS can use, because it was easier for them to use the legacy OS-9 style single-comm (USB-only) driver. I think it's fair to say Apple didn't help, because they didn't remove that option. In addition, Canon doesn't help the open source community, so no one has come up with free CUPS drivers (like Gimp-Print) for Canons newer than 6 years old. Gutenprint (new name for Gimp-Print) is working on it.
You can buy an excellent CUPS driver from www.printfab.net. Then you can use all the OS X network protocols.
When you set up your IP printing, don't forget to enter the linksys-specific queue name in the setup - it's a part of the address that gets data to the printer.
