Canon i9900 - no new drivers work to connect to Vista shared printer

I've spent 3 frustrating days trying to print to the Canon i9900 which is connected to my Vista PC and shared. On the Mac print queue it shows it is printing but on the Vista printer window, the status is SPOOLING and goes no further. Everything is correctly set on both sides, permissions, etc. I have tried every new updated driver from MAC and from Canon. The only print driver that does work is the Canon BJC-8500 but the document is 70% its regular size and the color is awful. I even installed the Snow Leopard update.
I guess that leaves me to continue printing thru Parallels/Vista for now until there's a better solution. I doubt it. Has anyone had any success sharing on a Windows network with this printer? Any help or ideas is greatly appreciated.

You have done some good research. One more thing - the driver from Canon was written to support direct USB printing only. You need a CUPS driver to use the various protocols available in the CUPS printing system in OS X. Look for CUPS drivers for your model here:

Try Gutenprint first, but your model might not be in there.

  • Unable to connect to USB shared printer

I hope someone will be able to help with this. I recently had to change my home network setup, and now I can't wirelessly connect to the USB printer shared through my PowerMac G4. Previously, I had AT&T DSL coming in through a Westell modem, with the line out going to the WAN port of the Airport Extreme base station. I then connected the LAN port on the base station to the uplink port on a Linksys switch, to which were connected the iMac G5 and the PowerMac G4. I had a Samsung laser printer connected to the USB port on the base station and an old Epson Stylus Color 740i connected to the G4 with USB printer sharing turned on in System Prefs. Everything worked fine - I could print to either printer from any computer, including wirelessly through my MacBook.
Unfortunately, I have been experiencing slow speeds with my DSL, so one of the steps an AT&T tech took was to replace my Westell modem with a new AT&T 2Wire, which also serves as a router (or switch, I'm not sure which one). Now I don't have the Linksys switch, as it's not needed. The iMac G5 and the G4 are connected directly to the modem through ethernet, and another ethernet port is connected to the WAN port on the Airport base station. There is no connection to the LAN port on the base station. The two printers are connected in the manner I described above. I can print to either printer from the iMac and the G4, but from my MacBook I can only connect to the Samsung that is plugged into the base station. Although printer sharing is still turned on in the G4, I don't see the Epson printer listed anywhere when I try to add a printer on the MacBook. Also, I used to be able to browse the local network to connect to my other computers from the MacBook, but now they don't show up in the browse window. I can connect to them if I put in the computer's IP address, which is now in a different format (192.xxx.x.xx) rather than 10.0.x.x like it used to be. I only mention these last two points because they might be related to why I can't connect to the printer.
Sorry this is so long and complicated, but if anyone has more networking experience than I do, please help. Thanks!

Your printer is requesting a mac address?
Is that before or after the printer showed you the available ssid's while running the wireless setup.
Did you run the wireless network test on the printer? and if so did it report any errors?
Which wireless setup are you running?

  • Connecting to a shared printer on a local network

I want to connect my iBook G4 to my Dell Windows computer to utilize a shared printer on the Dell. We currently use a local area network. What do I have to do to my iBook to use this printer. Should the printers we are trying to connect to appear on my computer? I want to connect over our wireless network to a computer connected to our Dell Windows computer.
    Thanks for your help.

I was having difficulty logging in to the server via. Finder, this is what worked for me.
    Netgear Router - WNDR 4000
    Mac OSX 10.5.8
After selecting "Connect to Server" in Finder I typed in "smb://readyshare" and I pushed the connect button.  I was prompted with a username and password and I typed in the username and password that I use to log in to the Netgear router.
I recently upgraded from a WNDR3700 and I did not have to do the above.  The readyshare server showed up in Finder a few minutes after I connected the USB drive.
This worked for me, hope it works for you.

  • Mac Book doesn't print when connected to a shared printer.

I am hosting a shared printer in our office and no other computer but mine can print from it. Mine is the only one connected to it via USB. All of the computers are Mac laptops. I've enabled printer sharing and checked to see how the others were configured but can't figure out what's wrong.
When printing from the other computers, I get a message in the progress bar saying "(On Hold) Authentication Required." I've tried pressing Resume and re-entering the username/password, but it goes back to that message...
The printer is a Brother 2140.

Having problems installing Canon MG3170. Anyone have any solutions?  Here is what I have tried:-
-Installed from provided Canon disk, firstly with wireless connection, then using USB connection.  Printer could not be added because the Macbook returns that the software is not available from Apple for both types of connections.
-Uninstalled software from the Canon disk, checked for software updates, then downloaded drivers (printer and scanner) from Canon Website.  Again tried to install using wireless connection then USB connecton.  Printer could not be added because Macbook returns that the software is not available from Apple
-Uninstalled drivers downloaded direct from Canon Website and plugged printer into Macbook using USB, Macbook recognised the printer and searched for the software, again Macbook returns that hte software is not available from Apple.
    Help!

    nrg adjusta,
Sorry it took me a while to repsond, Ive been pretty busy with school and work. But for my hard drive problem, I did hours and hours of more research and trying countless ways of installing and tweaking things in my laptop and absolutely nothing worked that I could do. It was very irritating because I felt like I was so close to fixing it and I was just missing a step somewhere. Though It still boggles me why the disk utility shows a different capacity for the HD's. One thing I'm going to try next is replacing the hard drive cable that goes from the internal HD to the macbook. I read somewhere that sometimes those can go bad over time, and also if you get a new, modern hard drive, sometimes the old cable (for some odd reason) might not be compatible with the new HD. So i want to test it out for myself to see it that is the actual culprit.
    http://www.ifixit.com/MacBook-Parts/MacBook-Hard-Drive-Cable/IF186-018
Once I get the cable and install it I'll let you know the results and if it helped at all.
Have you made any progress on your hard drive at all? If worst comes worst for you, you can probably get a SATA to USB cable and try to reformat it that way (this is the way that worked for me, but the only problem was it wouldn't be recognized when I installed it internally. Thats why i want to try getting the new cable), and if it still wont recognize it after that, you can just leave it outside of your mac, and just boot from that. The only thing that ***** about that is you have this big hard drive handing off the side of your mac when ever you need to use it.
Heres a link for a SATA to USB. this one is good because is compact and protects the HD from damage and most static electricity.

Im still continuing my search for the answer and once i find it (if ever!) I'll post it.

  • Can't find Canon i9900 with New Macbook Pro

I just set up my new Pro and installed(or thought I did) the i9900 driver. When I go to the Printer Setup utility and try to add the printer, it doesn't see any Canon drivers. I have done this several times. Any idea what I am doing wrong.
    Thanks!

    Hi Roberta,
If the i9900 doesn't show, then we need to make sure FireWire is enabled and working.
First of all, open System Preferences and then Network. Click the Show menu and select Network Port Configurations. Make sure there is a check for Built-in FireWire.
Also, go to your Mac HD (or whatever it is called)/Library/Printers/Canon/BJPrinter/Utilities and open the Canon IJ Printer Utility. Change the menu from USB to FireWire. The i9900 should be listed under the Product heading. Do you see this?
If you do, click on the printer name and select Maintenance. From the new window select Ink Level Information from the menu. After a short wait information about all 8 inks should appear, which confirms the Mac and the i9900 are communicating.
If the above is okay then try adding the driver again. Open Printer Setup Utility, click Add, click Default Browser, click More Printers, select Canon BJ Firewire. A similar window to the Canon IJ Printer Utility window will now show and the i9900 should be listed under the Product heading. Click on the i9900 and select Add. The driver should now be added to the printer list. There is no need to browse for a driver. The utility will select it for you (and it doesn't give you the choice to browse the Canon list).
Don't add the printer by clicking on the "1394 BJ_LUNO" listed in the Default Browser. Doing it this way, you will have to browse to the Canon folder but you won't find the i9900 in the list.
    Regards,
    Paul

  • I'm trying to connect to a shared printer on a PC.

I have joined the Windows workgroup on the PC. The PC can see the MAC but the MAC can't see the PC. I have the MAC firewall turned off. I also turned off Windows Firewall but that did help. Any ideas?

Don't use the CD software its not necessary.
Infact put it in the trash.
Your router will have an IP address in the range 192.168.1.1
Connect your router to your Mac via Ethernet cable (They usually supply one with the router and don't worry which end goes where the Mac LAN socket is bi-directional)
Also connect your router to your telephone line.
Now open your Web browser Safari . Type in the IP address above and a Javascript control panel will launch
Enter the default password and username (They are on a label on the router )
Your now have the ability to set up your router.
Your will need the password and user name supplied to you by your ISP at a minimum.
Enter these and most modern routers automatically configure the basic networking setting.
You now need to go to the security setting and set this as WPA2 Personal (NOT Enterprise) or WPA2 with AES and TKIP which ever it refers to and create a pass-phase. WRITE it down
    You should be online.
Now remove the cable and connect to the Wifi and enter that passphase.

  • GF3 Ti-200 vs New Drivers - FIXED!!!

Any driver above 44.xx didn't work properly on my MSI GF3 Ti-200. The problem turned out to be the BIOS (version 3.20.00.20).
    I went to http://whitebunny.demon.nl/hardware/chipset_nvidia.html
and downloaded the v3.20.00.19 (3201900.rom) and NVFlash. I booted into pure DOS and flashed the BIOS:
       nvflash --overridesub -f3201900.rom
Now the new drivers work perfectly.

Thx very much. It works already. I am happy. Thanks again for sharing the information

  • Can't connect to shared printer on Windows 7 Pro x64

I have a print server on Windows 2008 Standard and I have drivers installed for both x86 and x64 archs. The ricoh printer seems to work fine on windows 7 pro x64 but the hp printer will not work correctly. It seems to download/install the drivers but when actually connecting to the printer it errors out.
It says cannot connect to printer.
I can add the printer manually if I use tcp/ip printing instead of connecting to the shared printer. I can't figure out why its not working. Has anyone else seen an error like this? I'm not really sure what is causing this issue.
    Thanks!

    Hi,
    Thanks for the post.
Please also let us know the exact model of this HP printer.
If possible, please reproduce this issue on the Windows7 client and collect the relevant information for further research.
    Step 1: Download Process Monitor
    ======================
    1. Please download the Process Monitor at http://technet.microsoft.com/en-us/sysinternals/bb896645.aspx
    2. Extract the zip file to Desktop.
    Step 2: Clean Boot
    =============
Let's disable all startup items and third party services when booting. This method will help us determine if this issue is caused by a loading program or service. Please perform the following steps:
    1. Click "Start", go to "Run", and type "msconfig" (without the quotation marks) in the open box to start the System Configuration Utility.
    2. Click the "Services" tab, check the "Hide All Microsoft Services" box and click "Disable All" (if it is not gray).
    3. Click the "Startup" tab, click "Disable All" and click "OK".
    4. Click "OK" to restart your computer to Selective Startup environment.
    5. When the "System Configuration Utility" window appears, please check the "Don't show this message or launch the System Configuration Utility when Windows starts" box and click OK.
    6. Check whether or not the issue still appears in this environment.
Note: Temporarily disabling the Startup Group only prevents the startup programs from loading at startup. This shouldn't affect the system or other programs. We may still manually run these programs later.
    Step 3: Collect the Information
    =====================
    1. Open Procmon.exe (Process Monitor).
    2. Reproduce this issue.
    3. After that, please click Capture in the tool bar (or directly press Ctrl+E) in Process Monitor.
    4. Click Save, in the prompt window, selects “All Events”.
    5. Click Browser Button (The button is right to “Path”), in the prompt window, click Desktop, type “test” (without the quotation marks) in the File Name box and press Enter.
    6. Find the file, right-click on this file, click "Send To", and click "Compressed (zipped) Folder".
For your convenience, I have created a workspace for you.  You can upload the information files to the following link.  (Please choose "Send Files to Microsoft")

  • HP Deskjet 712c Win 7 Home problem connecting to shared printer on Win XP Pro PC

    Hi,
I am having a problem connecting to a shared printer on my home wireless network. The printer is HP Deskjet 712C. When I had Win XP on all my PCs, I could successfully share the printer from one PC and print to it from any PC. Worked just fine.
However, now I have 2 PCs with Win 7 Home and 1 PC with Win XP Pro. The printer is physically connected to the Win XP box. I have confirmed, on that box, it is being shared. When I try to add the printer on a Win 7 box, I select network printer and get to the point where it needs the driver. It prompts for an INF file. I have no clue where to go from there. I have done the Windows Update thing for Win 7 to update the driver list in the OS. I did see on the Win XP box that there's a place where I can load various drivers to the network for different OSs. I'm guessing that's so the appropriate drivers for those OSs will be available when adding the shared printer in those OSs. Of course, Win Vista and Win 7 are not available there. Is there any way I can share the printer from my Win XP box to my Win 7 boxes?
Also, I've tried physically connecting the printer to one of my Win 7 boxes to share it from there, but I have probems there just getting Win 7 to see the printer correctly. I'm using a Parallel - USB converter cable. When I plug it in, Win 7 sees the printer as a IEEE-1394 device instead of a printer. Even when I install the HP Deskjet 712C drivers in the OS driver list, and select the USB001 port, it tells me the printer is not plugged in, but I know it is.
I would love to hear some ideas! Please help!
    Thanks

HI, I have the same issue and recently (1/15/11) posted the problem.
Did you ever figure out what was arong and get it working?

  • Connecting Snow Leopard to Printer shared on XP Pro

I am attempting to connect my Snow Leopard machine to my printer that is shared on my XP Pro machine. Here are the steps I have taken.
    1. Printer shared on XP with printer name that is 12 characters or less
    2. Verified the XP Firewall is set to allow file and print sharing
    3. Verified shared printing works from another machine (I can print from a Vista machine to this printer)
    4. Both XP and Snow Leopard have the same Workgroup name
    5. Both XP and Snow Leopard are on the same subnet
    6. On Snow Leopard I have gone to Printers and chosen Windows. In the screen where I would expect to see my workgroup I see nothing, no workgroup, computers or shared printers.
    7. On Snow Leopard I have added the Advanced button to the Printers window and chosen Windows from there.
    8. For the SMB:// address I have tried the following (all with generic PostScript driver):
    smb://user:password@workgroup/server/sharename
    smb://user:password@server/sharename
    smb://workgroup/server/sharename
    smb://server/sharename
When I try to print (with any of the above SMB addresses) the print job gets stuck in the queue and says "waiting for authentication". When I resume the print job I am prompted for a username and password. I enter the username and password for an administrator account on the XP machine and the job still says "waiting for authentication"
    9. I can connect to an SMB file share on the same XP machine from the Snow Leopard machine (I just can't connect to the shared printer)
Any ideas on what else I can do to get Snow Leopard to connect to the shared printer on my XP Pro machine?

I finally succeeded in printing to my Win7 shared Brother DCP printer from my MacBook Pro with Snow 10.6.1 doing this:
    - in the "Advanced Sharing Setting" of the Win7 machine (in the Network and Sharing Center) I selected "Enable File Sharing for Devices that use 40 or 56 bit encryption" instead of the 128 bit set by default.
    - in my MacBook I accessed the Win7 machine using the finder and the string smb://xxx.xxx.xxx.xxx:139 (not the machine name...wins and workgroup are buggy).
    - Added the printer as usual with the string smb://user:[email protected]/printer
Connecting this way I can easily browse the PCs, sync my documents with Super Flexible Synchronizer (the Mac version of Goodsync for Win), use the Win shared printers.
I also experienced that if I turn on my other Mac Machine (OSx86 with Leo 10.5.8) on the LAN, on the finder sidebar of my Snow 10.6.1 one, the workgroup machines populates the list with their "wins" names.
If the 10.5.8 is turned off there's no way to connect the win machines but manually (Finder/Go/Connect to Server).
I thought it might be a "Little Snitch" (firewall for Mac) issue, but I turned it off and it's the same.
It must surely be a close ports related issue (between the two macs, they exchange LAN info through different ports/ways, maybe....)
Hope it may help, even if the 128 encryption mode doesn't affect XP machines (Only Vista and Win7)....

  • Shared printing on 10.3.9 iMac from MBP with 10.5.5 (worked then not!)

Panther 10.3.9 on iMac (Host with HP PS C3180 for shared printer attached via USB) - Leopard 10.5.5 cannot find the shared printer after it was already working for 3 weeks. Shared printer in Leopard disappeared. When attempting to reinstall the shared printer on the MacBook with Leopard it cannot find the shared printer. (At ALL). Have, reset printers (in Leopard), executed Article: HT2275, turned off firewall, on both machines and wireless router, reset both computers and router. Have 4 hours into finding the solution without success. iMac sees the printer when attached to MacBook but cannot print to it. PowerBook will not see the shared printer on the iMac and of course the shared printer function is enabled on the iMac. Any ideas? Jobs hire some of Gates old windows programmers to do Leopard print sharing? HELP!

    Hi there,
It is unusual that you still cannot see the 10.3.9 shared printer after changing to the cups browsing protocol (as per HT2275). Is there any chance that you run the Reset printing system after making this change, as this will reset the browsing protocol to Bonjour.
I would also check that the MacBook Pro can see the iMac. If you look at the Shared section of the Finder sidebar on 10.5, does the iMac appear in this view?
