Canon iP4500 though a Windows network

I have a Canon PIXMA iP4500 connected to a Windows XP computer. It is shared, UNIX support is enabled, the whole deal. The printer works fine on the XP computer and other network computers running XP.
I have an iMac (which is actually running 10.4.11, but the had the same issues with 10.4.10). I need to print from the Mac to the printer, over the network. I can't seem to do this, even though I installed the driver from Canon. I tried to add the printer, browse for it in the Windows network, select a Canon printer (the iP4500 was NOT on the list), and it only prints blank pages. I installed the gimp printer drivers, and now I see the iP4300 on the list, but not my specific model, and it still just prints blank pages.
This is actually pretty similar to a previous issue I had with a previous printer, the HP Photosmart 7350, which was solved in http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=327725. The only problem is that the same steps won't apply here.
So what can I do?

Well, until either Glutenprint (GIMP print) or PrintFab actually make a driver for the iP4500, here's what you can do.
Download the PrintFab drivers at ftp://ftp.zedonet.de/printfab/printfab-2.08a.dmg and, when choosing the printer model, choose CANON PrintFab and scroll down to CanonPIXMAiP5300 PrintFab and choose that. PrintFab is a 30 day trial, but will probably work better than Glutenprint for now (until Glutenprint supports the iP4500).
OR
Download the Glutenprint drivers at http://downloads.sourceforge.net/gimp-print/gutenprint-5.1.3.U.dmg?modtime=11822 55093&big_mirror=1 and when setting up the printer, under Canon, choose Canon PIXMA MP150 - CUPS+Glutenprint v5.1.3. This will not be able to print color, and you may have other issues with it as well.

  • Problem finding driver for Canon iP4500 for network printing

I'm using a DLink DPR-1260 as a print server which I share between OSX and Windows boxen. I've installed the appropriate Canon iP4500 drivers on my Mac and if I attach the printer directly via USB everything is good. However, as it's a shared device I'd prefer to access it over the print server. The problem is that I can't get the Canon drivers to appear when I use it in that mode; all the regular Gutenprint options appear but that doesn't include this particular model. I'm guessing that Canon has written them such that they only work when directly connected, but is there a way around this?

Get a newer version of Gutenprint:

  • Unable to add Lion compatible printer Canon iP4500

    Hello.
Having problem to re-install my Canon iP4500 printer. It was running well for years, but I had some issues (USB cable disconnected was the problem ) and deleted the printer to re-install it, all in System Preferences.
The problem is that when trying to add it as a new printer, the system states that "Apple has new software for your printer, do you want to download & install it". Well, yes of course. It then tries to download the driver, but always fails, stating the server is not available, please contact your hardware vendor for the latest driver / software". (Internet is working fine, allowing to post this, for example)
So, done that, downloaded and installed the latest canon driver for the iP4500, "Successfully". The printer still does not show up as an available printer, though it is still selectable to install, then starting the procedure again (Apple has software....no it is not available, contact Canon...).
How can I install the printer???
    Thanks...

So, downloaded the latest Apple software for Canon printers, which installed successfully, but the printer is not available. Trying to add it yet again in System Preferences, Print & Scan, only gives the download & install option, then the error message "The software for this printer is currently unavailable. Please contact the printer’s manufacturer for the latest software."
How can I tell the Add Printer in Lion that I already have the software, both from Apple and Canon...???
    Thanks....

  • An error occurred while reconnecting P: to \\JSERVER\Data Microsoft Windows Network: The network path was not found. This connection has not been restored.

Almost every day when I open my computer I get this message:
An error occurred while reconnecting P: to \  \  JSERVER\data Microsoft Windows Network: The network path was not found. This connection has not been restored.
We then have to go through the process of resetting everything from start to finish just so I can connect to the server. There is no reason that we can find that causes this other than maybe windows updating every night. Any suggestions as to how to
    fix this?

it sounds like you have a network drive you are trying to map even though you are not logged in maybe in a script or task instead of backing up to :P backup to the share, make sure you have security set properly to run the task when not logged on.
I assume you are running a backup of some sort as this is the backup forum..

  • Can't print .pdf files on windows network printer

    Hi,
I cannot print .pdf files on Canon IRC printer with UFR II 2.23 or 2.24 drivers connected through a windows network by LDP protocol, either with Apple Preview or Acrobat Reader - looks like the software doesn't find the printer (I have the rainbow whell and the software does not answer). It can last for hours, there is no other solution than forcing the soft to quit and finding another way to print. I have updated Canon drivers from 2.23 to 2.24 (all supposed to work with Lion) and that does not fix the problem.
This problem does not happen with Ms Word or Safari (or, more generally, other types of files) and it worked fine with Snow Leo even with pdf!! I also have windows XP with Parallels and guess what? I can print through Parallels with Acrobat Reader (for windows XP) on the same printer on which I cannot print with my Mac with Lion and Preview or Acrobat Reader for Mac!
    Please help !!
    Alexis

    Correction
It works with Acrobat but the printer does not like queues of documents...
The site privided me with the topics I fas looking for about this : it's a Canon drivers and Lion permissions problem.

  • Does the pro works in a windows network environment

I would like to purchase a macbook pro (15") but I'm not sure if it will work in a windows network environment.
please help!! does the pro works in a windows network environment
    My situation:
    I work in a company 2500 employees, 3 locations, 7 sub-locations 1 sever. almost 80% of the locations is/will be wireless connected.
need a reliable fast and tough laptop to support users on all locations.
    leonard

It would be neat though, to be able to connect
wirelessly on my Dell WinXP laptop over this dial-up
connection at home, the few times I'm going to use
it. So I thought eBaying one of those nice "old"
hockey puck Airport Extremes with built-in 56k
    modem.
    That should work.
From what I understood, the AE doesn't have a
    web-based configuration interface, like most
broadband routers have, but one needs to configure it
    installing a software utility, right?
    Correct
    Being in a
Windows only environment, will I be able to configure
my Airport Extreme-to-be using the Windows software
    on
    <http://docs.info.apple.com/article.html?artnum=75422>
    Yes.
    http://www.apple.com/support/downloads/airport42forwindows.html
? Does anyone of you have any experience with this?
    Yes
If so, could you reassure me that this is actually a
    feasible idea?
    Yes if does work.
Does the AE dial-in automatically whenever you're
generating traffic, by the way, or do you still have
    to establish the connection manually?
You can configure it that way, but it is easier to use Jon Sevy's Java utility.
Jon Sevy has a Java Utility for this purpose.
You will need Java in order to run the utility

  • Need Mac drivers in Windows network?

We have a huge windows network here and we have a Mac lab that is part of our network. I just installed a new laserjet printer in the mac lab and set it up on the Windows network and it prints fine from windows but doesn't from the Mac's. I went to the printers folder and added the network printer and it seems fine but when you tell it to print it acts as though it is then it stops the print job. You can restart the job but it just stops it again. Do, I need to install Mac drivers on my dell print server? If so, ho do you install mac drivers on a windows machine?

Though for 10.3 it should work for 10.4 as well.

  • Windows Network Guru?

I've done some playing around and now I'm more confused about ATV than ever.
I have a small peer-to-peer net in my house, five computers hooked in (two wirelessly) and all running XP. ATV works fine on the computer I chose to use it with but I brought up iTunes on one of the other computers this morning and it doesn't see ATV even though "Look for Apple TV" is on in iTunes. I tried turning off Noron AV (I don't have the Windows firewall turned on), starting and stopping the various iTunes/iPod services, etc, but no luck.
Now, it doesn't really matter all that much to me (really not at all) but I'm guessing this is symptomatic of some folks who are also having trouble getting ATV to show in iTunes -- only in their case they are in trouble because they don't have alternatives. Right at the moment I can't think of anything else to troubleshoot this, but if any of you Window network type gurus are reading this and have some more things to try I think it would be worthwhile to track this down.
It's pretty obvious it isn't the net, or ATV, but something peculiar to one computer here versus the other. The one it isn't working on is running NAV (and the other is using MacAfee) but as I said I tried turning Norton off and that didn't make any difference. They are use the same version of iTunes. They are both wired into the router -- could it possibly be that even though the other one isn't running iTunes that somehow the iPod services are interferring? (I'll try again later with that computer off but right now it's rendering and I can't interrupt it).
(I tried another wireless computer and it couldn't see ATV either -- something is really fishy here).
Like I said, ideas, suggestions or winning lotto numbers would all be appreciated.

I see (I think) -- let me walk through this slowly. I first make sure the computer is on with iTunes that I want to stream from (the non-syncing one). ATV won't show up there. Now I go into the room with ATV and go to sources (I assume) and I'll see this new computer there and get to select it and be given a code. Then I go back to the other room with the code and enter it... somewhere? into iTunes (does ATV then show up at that point?) and then I can stream?
I'll try this process -- can I assume that if I do this once I don't have to go through the hoops the next time I want to stream from this other computer?

If using KDE just open Konqueror or Krusader and type in "smb:/winmachine" or whatever the name of the windows puter is. KDE has SMB modules included, no need to install the samba package at all.
For Gnome/XFCE I think a valid smb.conf is needed- not sure though, as I'm a KDE guy.

  • Problem accessing Windows network - permission checking is inconsistent

I am in the process of making the move at my workplace from a Windows/Solaris environment to an exclusively-Solaris workstation environment. I have wanted to do this for a while but now that Evolution is bundled in with Solaris 10 I have finally embarked down this path.
One of things that I need to be able to do is access Windows shares on our corporate network. I am having a few issues with this using the Java Desktop system in Solaris 10. Here is a quick view of the windows network hierarchy.
    Windows Network -> Sub-network -> List of machines ->
List of folders on a given machine -> List of sub-folders within a given folder and so on ....
Here is what I am trying to do.
    1) Double Click 'Network Places' from the desktop.
    2) When the window 'File Browser: Network Places' opens, it appears that my Solaris workstation has automatically detected the presence of a Windows network. Very slick!
    3) Double click on the 'Windows Network (SMB)' icon.
    4) A list of sub-networks appear. Occasionally this list is not 100% complete. ie. there are 5 sub-networks but only 2 will appear on occasion.
    5) Double click the smaller network that I wish to access. The various machines within this network appear as a list of hostnames.
    6) Double click on the machine that I wish to access and a list of folders on this machine appear.
    7) Double click on the folder that I wish to access and a list of subfolders is presented. When I try to naviagte deeper an 'Authentication Required' window appears. I enter my username, password and domain. I also check the 'Remember password for this session' and 'Save password in keyring' options.
    8) I am prompted with a 'Create Default Keyring' window asking me for a password to associate with the default keyring. I enter the same password that I entered in Step 7.
    9) A list of subfolders appears. This is great. But when I attempt to navigate any deeper ... I cannot. A dialog pops up saying "The folder contents could not be displayed" with a message stating "You do not have permissions necessary to view the contents of the "foldername".
At this point, the file broswer gets in to a funny state. I try to hit the 'up' arrow to return to the folder which I could previously access but I am now greeted with a dialog claiming that I do not have permissions to access this folder. I cannot access anything past the first folder level on a given machine even though I could just a minute ago. This "funniness" clears up after some length of time. ie. if I come back in an hour, I can once again reach part 1 of step 9 without being greeted with permission errors.
Are there any SAMBA config options that I need to tweak or add to my smb.conf file to make :
    1) the listing of Windows networks be more consistent
    2) the permission checking to be more consistent and stable
Or does the issue lie on the Windows side of things.
Thanks in advance for any help,
    Tim

Thought I would update this one myself in case anyone else was having similar problems with a baseline Sol10 install. I suspected the problem was with Samba or the GNOME Keyring Manager. I downloaded Sun's new Update Connection tool to stay on top of patches. (http://www.sun.com/download/products.xml?id=42e02045) I installed a slew of GNOME and underlying OS patches and things are working now. Pays to stay up to date. ;)

  • Mac vs. Windows Network Compatability

I finally talked my mother into switching from M$ to a Mac, and she loves the new iBook. Here's the dilemma though: she has to connect to a private intranet for work, and the Mac keeps having problems. Safari won't seem to work, nor will Firefox, so I (grudgingly) downloaded Explorer and the newest JavaScript updates. The site will let you connect and sign on, but when you try to access your personal data, it keeps giving me a JavaScript error. Help me out here, if she can't connect to this site that she needs for work she's threatening to switch back to Windows. Anyone else tried to connect a Mac to a Windows network? Solutions...?

The company's Intranet site is most likely Windows-centric. Being an Intranet site, it was probably grown in-house by folks who may or may not have the technical skill to make the site truly HTML standards compliant. My company's Intranet site heavily favors IE for Windows and the only browser on a Mac that can view it properly is IE. Safar, Firefox and other browsers fail simply because they adhere more closely to HTML standards.
It's not a Mac versus Windows issue, but probably due to lazy HTML coding and no cross-platform testing.
Unfortunately, IE for Mac is officially dead as of December 31, 2005. See this link: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/internetexplorer/internetexplorer.aspx?pid =internetexplorer
You might check into getting Virtual PC for Mac: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/products/virtualpc/virtualpc.aspx?pid=virtualpc
It's not fast, but if all your Mom needs to do is connect to an Intranet site, it may be just fine.
Better yet, if she can access a Windows XP Professional system at work, she can use the Remote Desktop Client from her Mac: http://www.microsoft.com/mac/otherproducts/otherproducts.aspx?pid=remotedesktopc lient
    Hope this helps! bill

  • How to connect my macbook pro to a windows network

Hey... I have used my MacBook outside of the office all the time, but know we are going to use it for business purposes. We have a "basic" windows network to share files, folders, printers and scanners.  How do I start connecting my MacBook to this network.

    Hi alex,
It probably depends on which OS you're on; the following is for 10.6.8.
If you're trying wirelessly, I think you can open System Preferences > Network > click on the lock and enter your password if it's locked > select AirPort > in the dropdown menu next to Network Name select Join other network and enter the info asked for > click Apply if it's not grayed out.
If ethernet, click on Ethernet > Advanced > click on the Ethernet tab > select Automatically in the Configure dropdown menu > click on OK > click on Apply.
