Canon Mini DVD and Quicktime

I just got a new video camera that burns digital video write onto a small, mini dvd. My question is this: Can Quicktime convert this video to a quicktime movie so it can be put online in You Tube or other venues?
Jackbean1
iBook G4   Mac OS X (10.4.7)

QuickTime Player can't play MPEG-2 files (DVD) without extra software.
http://www.apple.com/quicktime/mpeg2/
QuickTime Pro (or any app like iMovie that uses it) can't convert audio from MPEG-2 files.
Yep. More software:

Last biggest stumbling block. You can't insert a "mini" DVD into a slot loading DVD player so you'll need to connect the camera via Firewire to move data.
If you can return the camera and exchange it for a regular DV tape camera you'll be better off in the long run. Be sure it has Firewire output.

I'm having problems importing my videos into imovie. i have a canon mini dvd camcorder. The camera only has a usb cord to move the videos. When i connect camcorder to computer idvd opens up and i can watch videos, but i can't import to imovie. This has been very frustrating. Can anyone help me with this problem. Hopefully i won't have to buy a new camcorder.

    Hi f
Very good advices from Sue ! (Hi Sue !)
Karsten has collected it like this:
    Hi
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your iMac. You need a trayloaded DVD to do this.

  • Mini-DVD and MacBook Air

I have a MacBook Air and purchased the Super Drive for MacBook Air.  I have all these family movies on DVD Mini's.  Is there anyway to play them and get them into IMovie?  Is there an adapter that will work in the slot?  Is there such a thing as an external drive for these little discs?  Any help will be really appreciated!

No. There is no adapter to get mini-DVDs safely into a MBA.
If you do a Google search you will find that there are lots of external drive that can be used with mini-DVDs.

  • Can't play mini dvd - and now I can't eject

I had a training video made at a class yesterday, and the instructor used a Sony mini-dvd camera for media.  I can't read it on my work Dell laptop, and I placed the DVD in my mid-2009 17" MBP.  Won't play, and I can not eject it either.  Other than splitting the case is there a way to eject the disk?

Regardless of the brand of computer, non-standard optical discs are totally incompatible with slot-loading optical drives. That instructor should have known.
Even if you open the case, the disk is still stuck in the drive because the drive irself is a full wrap-around design:
You can try holding the computer so the drive slot is pointed down and rocking it (not "shaking it!"). the computer should be OFF, not asleep when doing this. If that does not work, seek professional help.
Others may tell you to stick something thin and flat well into the slot to free the mini-disk, but I believe you can imagine how bad that could turn if not properly done.

  • Mini DVD and MBP confusion

    Hello,
I recently bought a new MBP and I'm a bit confused about the DVD drive.
According to apple, "some slot loading drives may support mini-DVD's (80 mm)"
According to these discussion forums and what I've seen online, thats not at all true, and putting one in your macbook will make the DVD get stuck.
As for the converter thing that you put the mini dvd on to make it a full sized disk, I've seen some people who say that this works and some say the DVD still is not recognized.
    so, who's right?
info on the drive in my macbook:
    HL-DT-ST DVDRW GSA-S10N:
    Firmware Revision: AP12
    Interconnect: ATAPI
Burn Support: Yes (Apple Shipping Drive)
    Cache: 2048 KB
    Reads DVD: Yes
    CD-Write: -R, -RW
    DVD-Write: -R, -R DL, -RW, +R, +R DL, +RW
    Write Strategies: CD-TAO, CD-SAO, CD-Raw, DVD-DAO
    Thanks for your help.

    Hi Mike,
The external enclosure will have a "firewire bridge" which converts between ATAPI (essentially the same connector as IDE) and Firewire and a power connector. It is simply a matter of plugging in the cables that come with the enclosure, doing up a few screws and bob's your uncle. The process is almost identical to installing an internal drive in a PC, but easier as you don't have to worry about where to plug things etc!.
"Cooldrive" seem to be a good source in the US - http://www.cooldrives.com/525usbfircas.html
If possible look for one with an "Oxford" chipset in the Firewire bridge (if they have this they will usually brag about it - rather than the cheaper "prolific" bridge). This one looks about right for a cheap option, or this one for the next step "up market"!
Compatibility used to be an issue under earlier versions of OSX and OS9 but these days is rarely a problem. When it was a problem, a little utility called "patchburn" would almost always overcome the problem, but it is not needed under Leopard.
Both Pioneer and LG drives seem to work fine.
    Cheers
    Rod

  • Imovie and mini DVD camcorder

My students made a movie on a DV camcorder when the camera quit working. I was able to import the partial video into Imovie, but we finished the movie on my Canon mini DVD camcorder. Is there any way to somehow get the second half of the movie (on two mini dvds) into Imovie so I can edit it all together? At this point, I burned the portion in Imovie and am trying to figure out how to combine them all on my pc. However, I really love Imovie and would like to use it. Any suggestions would be great.
    Thanks

I have an external hard drive. So, I guess I could just save my imovie files in the portable hard drive and then move them to my pc or vice versa? However, aren't the formats different? When I tried to use Quick Time Pro, it didn't recognize the formats (Video_TS.BUP and Video_TS.VOB)
Could I move those files into my mac using my external hard drive and then import into imovie? I should say I'm a very new Mac user, and not very experienced with editing - have only begun.
    Thanks for all your help

  • What is the recommended Mini DVD  VIDEOcamera for the MAC.

I RECENTLY PURCHASED A PANASONIC MINI DVD AND THE MAC DOES NOT RECOGNIZE IT WHEN CONNECTED TO IMOVIE.
LOOKING FOR A NEW ONE, SHOULD I GO WITH A CANON ?
NEED SOME ADVICE, THANK YOU ALL !

Just to expand on that last post, Its true. There is NO good solution for editing from DVD. First, DVD comcorders generally compress the video poorly, too poorly to edit with. Second, it is encoded using MPG compression which, without Quicktime plugins, wont naturally play outside of the Macs DVD Player. Third, the MPG stream coming from DVD can be very problematic in editing.
The best way to go, from a consumer-level standpoint, is the Mini DV or HDV formats. The quality is great and its TOTALLY plug and play.
If you HAVE to use DVD, i would find a program like MPEG Streamclip to transcode the DVDs over to DV or something editable.
I couldnt even recommend the hard drive based camcorders out there.
    good luck,
    joe

  • How do I download a DVD and transfer it into iMovie?

Okay, so I have a few DVD and quicktime files I want to make into a movie. However, iMovie won't recognize them when I try to import them. Plus, how do I download a DVD onto my computer. It's sort of a home movie kind of thing and I want to send it to someone. And oh yeah, I don't understand a word of computer jargon, so in plain english if you could. Thanks.

    Hi
There are no program as standard in a Mac that can copy a DVD to iMovie.
You need to do it another way:
    • Roxio Toast™ can back engineer to streamingDV that iMovie can read/import - or -
    • Use a DVD-player and a miniDV tape Camera and copy to tape. This iMovie can import.
    Else:
    A. don't put a mini DVD into Your Mac unless it’s a trayloaded DVD burner/reader
    B. Read what Karsten collected:

  • Editing Mini DVD

I working on a highlight film for a local basketball team and found that I cannot import the footage from a Mini DVD into iMovie? The only way I can figure out to do this is by copying the Mini DVD to Mini DV then importing that. This just seems like a lot of steps to edit this footage. Is there any way around this? Thanks for the help.

    Hello,
I wanted to follow up with you on this question you helped me with a few months ago. I finally finished my project but when I burnt the project to DVD the last half of the DVD had images that were very blurred and seems to leave "ghost trails" behind. I have narrowed down the problem. The first half of the project I imported from MPEG streamclip and saved as DV. The second half I imported the Mini DVDs and saved as Quicktime files. When viewing these in FCE they looked fine but when I burnt the DVD I had the problems. Do you know of anything I can do to correct this problem? I have burnt the DVD in iDVD at best quality and best performance with no change. I have also exported the entire project to Quicktime and imported to iMovie with no success on the final burn. The only other thing I can see is under the render options there is a box for "motion blur" it was checked and once the QT files were put into FCE they had to be render so I thought that could be something but I don't know. I just thought I would try to contact you again since you have experience with Streamclip (which I think is awesome by the way, thanks for the tip). Please let me know.
    Thanks,
    Leon

  • Can't import some Sony mini dvds

I have a Sony Handycam DVD403 and am importing with iMovie '09
I've successfully imported 15 mini dvds but have 7 which do not get recognized.
For the ones that work, I turn the handycam to play, the handycam screen says 'USB MODE', the Mac gives me a dialogue box that say 'you have connected a mini-DVD device to your computer.  Chose an action from the popup menu or click Ignore' .  I just click ignore and a few seconds later, the Device list of the mac shows a new entry, another dialogue box displays at the top of iMovie that says 'Looking for cameras and devices' with a blue/white moving bar under it and the words 'Sony Storage Device' under the bar.  After a couple of minutes, it says 'Generating poster images' and then shows me the clips and I select which ones to import (oddly enough, it lists everyone twice, so I must deselect 1/2 of them, but at least I can import them)
For the ones that don't work, I get the 'you have connected a mini-dvd device...' but the mac never shows me anything new in the list of devices and nothing more happens.
If I unplug the USB cable, I can see the videos on the handycam, so something is on the mini DVDs
I have tried turning off the handycam, rebooting the mac, unplugging the usb cable, using another usb cable...all in various sequences with no luck.
Because the handycam device is not listed as a device, I can't use the import facility from the File Menu
Any assistance would be greatly appreciated.  I was so encouraged that some worked and hope someone has tips to get the last 7 working
    thank you!

nevermind...kept reading on this support forum and tried finalizing one of the mini DVDs and it WORKS now!
    Yeah!

  • Playing mini dvds on Macbook

I have a sony dvd camcorder which records onto mini dvds and I wish to find a way to play them in my 13" macbook. Can I just buy an external tray loading dvd drive? Will this work ok with the format that the camcorder records in? I have tried to contact Sony about this and they reckon it's not possible!

Can I just buy an external tray loading dvd drive?
    Yes.
Will this work ok with the format that the camcorder records in?
Depends. I've heard reports of people not being able to play Sony recorded discs in anything but Sony DVD players because they use their own formats. If you can find somebody with a different brand DVD player, you can test it. You may need to import the video to the computer, hopefully through FireWire, otherwise through USB.

  • Mini dvd input?

I know I can import a "mini dvd" video into my pc using my "firewire" port. but what if you only have the mini dvd? can you just pop it into your dvd drive and import it that way? the tray of my dvd drive looks like it will hold such a dvd and of course, dvd's read from the inside so the size of the dvd shouldn't matter. will windows recognize the dvd? I DID try a search on "mini dvd" and got zero hits, has nobody else tried this?
    tnx.

You cannot do a Capture via FireWire, but you should be able to drop the miniDVD into the drawer of your multi-drive. That little recess should fit perfectly.
I would Copy the contents to your HDD, and not Import directly from the miniDVD. The Project Preset should be a DVD/HDD camera. Cannot recall the exact syntax, but that will get your field order correct.
    Good luck,
    Hunt

  • How to import AVCHD movies from Canon HR10 (mini DVD) to iMac / iMovie?

I have just bought an iMac (I am a PC user for a very long time and not yet familiar with the Mac software), and I am having troubles with some basic tasks: I want to transfer AVCHD movies from my Canon HR10 (mini DVDs) to my iMac / iMovie. However, the iMac / iMovie does not seem to recognize the camera when I connect it via the USB cable, i.e. nothing happens at all (the disc is finalized, and the camera is in "Play" mode). I have also tried to import the contents of the mini DVDs via a network harddisk, but iMovie does not seem to recognize the format?! I don't know what I am doing wrong?

I think iMovie will want to see the camera as a device before it will do the import.
Not sure you can import direct from the card, as your experiments have shown.
It may be due to the processing of the video as it comes off the camera.
Other people may have a solution though.

I have a Canon DC310 camcorder that uses mini dvd's and doesn't have the ability to connect to a computer.  How can I get my new Imac to read these dvd's?  Will the mini dvd adapter work or do I need to purchase an external dvd rom device?  Which device works well with the Mac?  Do I need anything else to get the dvd material onto my mac?  Thanks!!

No DV port in camcorder.  Just a yellow AV port/hole.  I did find a Canopus ADVC110 device in a box that was bought several years ago to convert VHS tapes onto DVD's.  Can I use this with a Mac?  Could I connect a dvd player to the Canopus and transfer the disks onto my Mac?  Or, connect the camcorder via AV port to the Canopus and that to the Mac and transfer that way?  Thanks again!
