Canon MX850 setup/driver help

I recently bought the Canon MX850 with my new iMac. I'm a new Mac convert as well as I've used Windows for as long as I can remember.
Let me first explain my setup and use for the printer. It is connected to my Linksys WRT54G wireless router via the ethernet port. I first connected the printer to my iMac via USB so I could configure the network settings on the printer. I also still have Windows machines hooked up both wirelessly and hard connected to my router. I will be using the printer for office type work and sometimes to print a photo. I do not require the use of any advanced photo/graphics programs such as Photoshop.
Ok, on to my confusion.... I am confused as to which drivers I need to use with this printer. The driver included on the CD is version 7.1 while Canon's support site has a CUPS driver version 10.2. I am unfamiliar as to what a CUPS driver is and if I need to use it. My rudimentary research seems to indicate a CUPS driver is the basic driver set which OS X requires. However, when I reached out to Canon's support team, they are indicating to me that I do not need it unless I do advanced photo printing (see below).
"The CUPS drivers are not necessary to use with any unit that has it's
own standard drivers. For units and applications that do need need
them, it will not offer any higher level of performance than the
standard drivers."
"The CUPS drivers provide a higher level of translation for high-end
units and 64-bit applications. Typically you will not need them unless
you are printing with a high resolution graphics program. It does not
add any additional functionality or performance in a wireless or any
other environment."
Now, prior to all of this, I did try to install the CUPS 10.2 driver. First, I installed everything off of the CD including the 7.1 driver and network/scan utilities (I did not install the "fluff" software). Then, I installed the CUPS 10.2 driver without trying to uninstall the 7.1 driver. I did all of this while the printer was still connected to the iMac via USB. When I go into Preferences -> Printer/Fax, the driver version while connected via USB states 10.2 HOWEVER, the driver version while connected only to the router via ethernet port states 7.1. So, this is adding to my confusion as to what driver I need to use.
Thanks for the help.

Hi Gooter, and a warm welcome to the forums!
Use which ever one works, it only matters if we have a problem... sometimes 2 drivers/setups will confuse thing, but have you tried adding the Netwirked Printer yet?

  • Unable to load Canon MP160 printer driver

I've had the hardest time using my Canon MP160 printer on my iMac (Mac OS 10.5). In fact, I'm not able to print at all.
I have the printer connected via USB. It always has been. However, it only stopped working recently.
I downloaded the drivers for the printer and scanner from Canon's web site. However, when I attempt to load the printer driver, the "Installing Canon IJ Printer Driver" window appears. It gets to the "Finishing Installation" part in the process. But it "hangs" at some point and does not complete. I've tried it twice. It hung at two different points in the process. I tried letting it run overnight. That was no good.
I've also looked for the "Printer Setup Utility" and can't seem to find that anyplace. I'm wondering why I can't find that.
If anybody could help me solve this, I'd be so thankful.

Hello marconi10. Welcome to the HP Forums. I understand you are unable to install your printer on one computer, over a wireless connection. I'm going to suggest a very simple workaround, which if it works, will remove any complicated troubleshooting that would be necessary:
Please try installing the printer with a USB connection. If this does not work, you know that there is an issue occurring with the computer.
If this does work, the printer will be successfully installed. At that point, you can change the connection type from USB to wireless. For more information on how to do this, please reference this HP document: Convert from a USB connected printer to wireless
If the printer will still not connect wireless, this will point out a computer issue. For additional information and troubleshooting, relating to the inability of installing the printer over a wireless network, please reference this HP document: 'Unable to Find Printer' Error Message Displays on the Computer During Wireless Network Installation
Please respond with the results of your troubleshooting. I'm only here to help!

  • Windows 7 doesn't detect my Canon MX850

    Hi all,
I have a Canon MX850 printer connected to the network. Unlike other reports in this forum, Windows 7 doesn't detect my printer at all.
I can ping the printer and access it's network configuration page so network connectivit is not the issue (I even disabled the windows firewall, just in case).
Any clues where to go next?
    Thanks,
    S.

    Hi,
Can the printer work fine on other machine on the network?
At this stage, you can refer to the following steps for a test.
    1. Plug the printer to the Windows 7 machine directly and install the proper driver. For your reference, I have enclosed the latest driver for Windows 7 below:
    Canon MX850 driver
Please Note: Microsoft provides third-party contact information to help you find technical support. This contact information may change without notice. Microsoft does not guarantee the accuracy of this third-party contact information.
Is the printer working fine on the Windows 7 machine? If not, please let me know. Otherwise, you can put the printer back and connect it via network again.
    2. If the printer still cannot be detected via network, I suggest you remove the original printer on the computer and recreate a new network printer icon.
For more information to access a network printer, please refer to the link below:

  • Canon MX850 will not show up

I am trying to install a Canon Mx850 to my Unibody MBP 15" and I cannot get the drivers to show up as an option at add.
I have installed them several times, even tried to do it w/o the airport Express, but to no avail.
I am no rookie. I also booted in safe mode and repaired permissions and nada.
    Please help a frustrated soul.

If you are using the Canon MX850 v7.1.1 driver, then you cannot search for the printer name in the Print Using menu. The driver software needs to communicate with the printer after you select it via the Default browser view (if you have the printer connected via USB rather the Ethernet port) before it will automatically change to Print Using menu to Canon IJ Printer.
If you have installed the drivers several times, you could have an version conflict. I would suggest you manually remove all the Canon drivers and start again, but with the MX850 connected directly to your Mac. Following is a procedure that should help with removing all the drivers.
    1. Navigate to Library > Printers > Canon and delete the contents of the BJPrinter folder.
    2. Navigate to Library > Receipts and delete the Canon driver package file/s. The file name will show Canon MX850 xxx.pkg
    3. Navigate to Library > Preferences and delete the Canon folder.
    4. Empty the Trash
    4. Restart the Mac (without the MX850 connected to it at this point)
    5. Install version 7.1.1 of the Canon driver, which is available from the Canon web site.
    6. Once the driver installation is complete, open Disk Utility and run Repair Disk Permissions.
    7. Connect the MX850 USB cable. The software will often detect the printer and automatically add it to the Printers list. You can open Print & Fax and see if this has occurred. If it has, try a test print.
    8. If the printer is not listed, select to add it via the Default browser view. The printer should be displayed and upon selecting it the Print Using menu should automatically change to Canon IJ Printer. Click Add to complete.
If the above steps work, then turn the printer off, connect it to the Airport Express and create a new printer queue.

  • Snow Leopard and Canon MX850

My Canon MX850 network printer does not work with my MacBook Pro and Snow Leopard. (It worked just fine before the upgrade.) I have the latest Canon drivers installed, and I have been able to add the printer through the advanced option using the IP (http) protocol and the printer's network IP address. The printer, however, doesn't print even though my screen says it is. Help, please.

You should not have to uninstall Parallels. Version 5 was meant to resolve the blocking of the network printer. Also, if you still had Parallels 4, the v10.26.2 driver for the MX850 was meant to resolve the issue with the printer not being seen.
So, here is a link to the v10.26.2.0 driver.
    http://support-au.canon.com.au/contents/AU/EN/0100105002.html
Note that the printer and scanner are both added via the Default view. If neither of them is appearing in the Default view, then there is a Terminal command that you can run that will stop the Parallels network services. This will save you having to uninstall and will help us identify if Parallels is a cause.
This is the command you can enter into Terminal.
    sudo launchctl stop com.parallels.desktop.launchdaemon
you will be prompted for your password. Enter this and then exit Terminal. Now open Print & Fax, click Add and select Default. Does the MX850 appear as a Bonjour Scanner or printer?

It seems the latest driver is for OS X Mountain Lion, and the manifacturer haven't yet released a driver for OS X Mavericks. Is there any way that I can solve this issue soon? I don't downgrade to OS X Mountain Lion. Help!

  • Canon MX850 printer issues with Mac Book Pro

I have a new Mac book pro - I have used my Canon 400D camera with my Canon MX850 printer for 6-7 years with great results.  Now my images look great on iPhoto but do not print clearly.  It is disappointing as I bought the laptop with the retina screen for my photography.  What can I do to get me images up to standard?

  • Sudden Canon CMFP Printer Driver Error?

My Canon MF8380 had been working fine with my macbook pro (printing wirelessly), and all of a sudden today I am getting an error that says:
"Canon CMFP Printer Driver: Printer is not responding. Check the printer power and connection, and then try sending printing job again."
I have tried the basics - turning off and on the printer, rebooting the macbook pro, printing from different applications, making sure Job Accounting is not checked in setup, seeing that the driver seems like it's acknowledged, checking and unchecking sharing prefs... Not versed enough to do much beond that.
    Any advice?
    Thanks in advance!

Canon just released a new print driver that fixed my exact same error.

  • Canon LBP3200 CAPT Drivers - Help!

So imagine with me for a second -
You are busy with uni and you require a laser printer to be able to chuck those pages of text out without costing an arm and a leg for ink.
So you buy a shiny new Canon LBP3200 Lasershot Printer - quite expensive for a printer these days.
Then 2 weeks later you upgrade from a crummy windows machine to a new sleek macbook pro you've been saving up for - plug the printer and and wow it detects it.... but you dont have drivers.
    Canon australia is no help.
so you hit the forums - find a few great threads:
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?threadID=1197490&tstart=285
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6243502&#6243502
    http://discussions.apple.com/thread.jspa?messageID=6793558&#6793558
Then you try all types of drivers:
Mac OS 1.60 CAPT Drivers 2006 - no luck
Mac OSX 1.70 English CAPT Drivers 2008 - Uses 'generic' driver and installs but when you print it just lists 'stopped' and no prints.
Mac OSX 1.70 Japanese CAPT Drivers 2008 - Similar to above
Mac OSX 2.20 Japanese CAPT/CUP Drivers 2008 - no luck either
You then go to the trouble of using Xcode property list editor to change entries of the LBP3300 driver included in the 1.70 package to see if there is any luck but sadly nothing comes of that either.
So why doesnt the Mac OSX 1.70 driver newly released have drivers for a current printer though they have drivers for an older LBP3000? you ask yourself.
Problem is only have return to store warranty for 7 days and now you're stuck with an expensive brick.
Now you know how i feel... :o)
Any help would be gladly appreciated..
    Cheers

So from my previous post i found a thread on here to getting the LBP2900 working and found it had two special files located in:
    /Library/Printers/Canon/CAPT/Profile/USB
    and the
    /Library/Printers/Canon/CAPT/PrinterInfo/Device
folders which included the LBP2900 driver (both slightly different)
After navigating through these files in plist editor i changed all the values from LBP2900 to LBP3200 to see if i could get it working with the printer.
After editing - dumping and saving the files, i made sure i'd reset the printers in the printer settings and then i restarted and tried installing the printer.
Fantastically!! - the printer now reads 'LBP 3200' as the driver instead of 'Canon Generic'.. using the modified LBP 2900 file
Only problem is - when printing the files still sit in the cue as 'Stopped' and do not print. - choosing the printer info option now has a picture of a LBP2900 even though the dialog reads 'LBP3200' and says 'cannot communicate with printer'.
So after looking at these 2 files - its obvious that the few settings to make a driver to work with the CAPT package is simple - and im sure if we were able to contact canon japan or canon europe they would see it wouldnt be too hard - and help the lives of soo many - its its just getting the correct settings and saving into one file as their CAPT package works - i think its just the 3200's product specific nature file required.
I dont believe there is much we can do without the help of canon on this one - feel free to leave your 2cents.
PS. Can i contact canon australia and possibly do a swap of my printer as its been soo close to purchase time?

  • Canon MX850 No longer working

    Hi,
I'm having an issue with my printer... OS X(10.6.1)
It was working fine until day before yesterday... Printer is Canon MX850,
Recognizes printer fine.. the only thing I see that could be different is
when I open up printer utility it says USB in the pull down and not network.
and there is no printer listed here. Printer is in my bedroom connected to my
    airport extreme.. (didn't mention this)
I did run software updates two days ago .. I don't know if this has anything
to do with this problem?? Seems funny that my printer stopped working then too.
I've deleted the printer and added it again.. it installs fine.. it's just not
    working.. I'm bummed.

    Hello Mindy,
Checking the specs for the MX850, it looks like it does not have built-in wireless support (it does have wired support). So, can you confirm you are connecting the printer to the Extreme via USB or Ethernet cable.
Regarding the Printer Utility, if the printer is connected to the USB port of the Extreme, then it will not see the printer when USB (or Network) is selected. For the USB selection, the printer would have to be connected directly to the Mac to operate correctly.

  • Canon printer setup query

(Please keep any responses as non-techie as possible please!)  At present I have a Pixma ip4200 printer connected to my PC by a USB cable.  I also have a laptop connected to the printer via a router ( no WPS button)  I'm in the process of buying a Pixma MG6650 .  Having downloaded the manual for this, I'm not finding the instructions very clear.
My question is, will I be able to have both printers working using the same arrangement ( MG6650 connected to my PC by USB and to the laptop wirelessly, through the router? Or is there another way?

    Thanks John,
But that is the site I downloaded latest driver
installed same, but when I try to add the printer it thinks for a while,
then I get the message that there is no software in apple update
and all I can do is cancel the install
Seems like Canon provided a driver but Apple can't deal with it
I also went to apple to look at supported printers and the 9500 is listed
    on the 10.8 list
    What gives???

  • Canon PIXMA MG6320 driver - Print problem

Canon PIXMA MG6320 driver - New printer, Windows XP Pro and Excel 2000 - printing 4 into 1 only prints the first page and preview print prints all of the pages while displaying the preview.  Tried it with administrative rights and had the same problems.
    Any thoughts or suggestions?
    Thanks
Tried reinstalling driver from the Canon website, the problem remains.

    Hi Rhinomopolis,
The actual page that is printed should appear just like the print preview.  If there is a mismatch between the print preview and the final output, it could be related to a setting on the printer or some other type of issue (out of ink, for example).  If the page does not appear properly in the print preview, review the settings in your printing application and try again.
