Canon MX870 WI-FI Printer

I am trying to link to the above printer I get a printer not connected message when I send a print job.  I've successfully set up the printer with a Sony Vaio laptop so I know the router / printer are communicating.  Network setup: Location Connected Wi-Fi is connected to the router.
Thanks

  • After upgrading to Snow Leopard, Canon MX870 doesn't print text...just images

After upgrading to Snow Leopard (yes I know I'm slow to upgrade) my Canon MX870 isn't printing text. It is printing images but the quality if horrendous because it's not printing the black ink.
Here's what I've done so far
Installed the latest drivers for Snow Leopard from Canon
Cleaned the heads of the printer
Added new ink to all cartridges
Run printing tests (nozzle print patterns)...all good
Reset my printers in the Print Fax Preferences and added in the printer again
    Numerous restarts
Now I'm at a loss for what else to do. Does anyone have any other suggestions?
BTW, printer is connected via USB not wireless.

OK well I can see now that all of my files are present on the hard drive (mybook) only they are not showing up in aperture. It seems that there has been some sort of communication breakdown between the two.
As I said several files are missing and or corrupt in my aperture library. I'm wondering if there is a way to rebuild the library without using the vault technique? Does this make sense to anyone?
I was able to go into finder - mybook - aperture library - show contents and see that all my raw files at least are there. Now I just need to get aperture to recognize them.
    Any help is greatly appreciated!

I just looked at the Canon site and it has Mavericks drivers.

  • Canon MX870 couldn't print after Mt. Lion installed

After installing Mountain Lion, my printer, Canon MX870 stopped printing with error message "Stopped - "Filter" Failed."
I downloaded the newest drivers from Canon, but it still didn't work. I spent over 30 mins with Canon's tech support, went through deleting printer from System preference "printer & scanner" list, disconnect printer, "resetting printing system," rebooting computer, then reconnecting printer, adding printer on "printer & Scanner" list again..... still didn't work. Canon tech support suggested to contact Apple, so I got Apple support help. Basically, we went through exactly same steps over and over,... didn't work. Then, I was suggested to use disk utility to verify disk, repair disk permission... restart and do above steps again, still didn't work. Next apple care guy suggested to "reinstall Mountain Lion" all together. I did. Still didn't work. He looked into communities comments and suggested to download 3rd party printer drive..... ahhhh, you are getting paid to support customers with your professional knowledge. Just looking up some solutions in the community posts and if it could solve the problem, I had already done so and didn't need to set up phone supports.   I was this close to give up....
As the last resort, I decided to manually delete all Canon folders from Library and application folder, restart computer, then installed new drivers again. Guess what, it worked.
So, if any of you having the same issues as I had, I recommend you to MANUALLY DELETE printer files. Evidently, "deleting printer" or "resetting printing system" via System preference don't delete all the existing Canon printer folders. (I wonder why AppleCare guys never suggested to do this....it could save me many hours.)

Hi Pahu. I've read some of your answers to other Canon printer owners and they've helped those people, so hopefully you can help me out. I tried both a regular cleaning and deep cleaning as well as a nozzle test, but that didn't fix the printing issue. Same goes for a factory reset on the actual printer.
So did the black ink appear with the nozzle test? If it did, then the black head/tank are okay.

The only thing I think could be causing this specific printer issue is possibly the chip on the ink cartridges. They aren't authentic Canon ink cartriges, but they worked before (however, on my PC). I purchased the ink cartridges a few years ago (2006 to be exact), so it is possible that the chip is interfering with the printer being fully printing all documents?
If the nozzle test does show the black ink then it won't be an issue with the cartridges.
But if there is no black on the nozzle test, and the deep clean has not helped, then you may just need to purchase a new black cartridge. With you purchasing the cartridges in 2006 and having the printer stored for a period of time, then it is quite likely that the nozzles in the print head have dried up and stopping the ink flow.

I'm kind of annoyed with myself that I didn't use this printer prior to upgrading from Snow Leopard to Lion to Mountain Lion since part of me thinks that the printer could be incompatible with Mountain Lion, but then again, I'm not a Mac expert. I'm computer/tech savvy, so any other suggestions you think may help (however "technical" it may be) would be much appreciated!
The printer is compatible with Mountain Lion. If it wasn't, then it would not print at all.
The other thing to note is that you have the same issue with your Windows partition via Bootcamp. If Windows was still printing but Mtn Lion wasn't, then there would be cause to blame the new version of OS X. But from what I have read it appears to be a physical machine issue rather than the OS.

  • Connect to Canon Mx870 scanner after OS 10.9.4 update

    Hi, world of Mac geniuses:
after the 10.9.4 update, none of the Macs in my house (a 2010 iMac, a 2012 MacBook Pro, a 2014 MacBook Air) will recognize the scanner function on our networked Canon MX870 integrated scanner / printer. They all recognize it as a printer, but not as a scanner. It is connected wirelessly to our AirPort base station. As I said, all the computers in the house do recognize it as a printer, and can print to it, so I don't think there's anything wrong with the network connection per se.
I've tried all the obvious fixes -- restarting all the devices, removing the printer and then reinstalling it in System Preferences on each machine, removing the printer from the network and then connecting it to the network again.
Has anyone else experienced this problem? Any ideas?
    --JT

Just to confirm, when you want to connect to a networked scanner using Image Capture, the device will appear under the heading of Shared rather than Devices. So the MX870 is not listed under the heading of Shared?
If it is not listed under Shared, then a suggested action would be to connect the MX870 to one Mac via USB cable - purely as a test. If you then open Image Capture on this Mac the MX should now be shown under Devices. Select it and see that you can scan. This will confirm that the ICA driver is installed and working correctly. If this does work, disconnect the USB cable from the Mac and try scanning via the network again.

  • How do I scan and email documents on my canon mx870? I have a MAC OS X 10.7.5 and it is connected with a usb cable to the printer. Thank you so much!

How do I scan and email documents on my canon mx870? I have a MAC OS X 10.7.5 and it is connected with a usb cable to the printer. Thank you so much!

Hi, I have 10.6.8 and an HP printer so it may be slightly different but I'll give it my best shot:
    Go to System Preferences.
    Click on "Print & Fax"
Near the top of that page you should see "Print" and "Scan" options. Click "Scan"
A button appears that says "open scanner"
The settings are different between the different scanner models so I'm not sure what the next window will look like, but it should be pretty straightforward from there. It will scan to a JPEG image which you can attach to an email. I hope that helps! Let me know if there's anything ense I can help with.

  • Canon MX870 network printer works sometimes

OK so I am in need of some help with printing over a wifi network.
I am using a Canon MX870 as a network printer with a Macbook Pro, and iMac that are connected to it via wifi. I also had it connected via ethernet and I still had the same issues. The printer does print but not consistently. It will randomly say that there is a communication error in the canon print status. I had the same issues with another HP officejet.
I am running the verizon wireless router and Mac OSX 10.6. Any help would be very much appreciated.
    Thanks!

Given the current situation with the MX870 and the previous issue with the HP then I suggest you try changing the channel used by the Verizon router. Sometimes this can be done automatically by the router - simply restarting the device can be enough for it to obtain another channel. The other way would be to connect to the internal web page of the Verizon, by typing its IP address as the URL in Safari, and then manually changing the channel currently being used.
As to what channel to use, I suggest you get an application that can scan your immediate area to show what other wireless access points are close and could be conflicting with yours. There is a nice widget called Airlock that will show all wireless access points the Mac can 'see' and show what channels they are using. With this knowledge you can then select a channel that is not being used, or at least reply with what the utility finds and report this back.
The other thing you can check is the measured signal strength of the MX870. This can be found on the internal web page of the printer, which you access by typing its IP address into your browser. If you don't know the IP address you can use Safari to find the device, by opening the Bookmarks link in the toolbar and then selecting Bonjour in the left pane of Safari. The MX870 should be listed in the right pane. Selecting it will show the MX870 home page and here will be the quality and strength of the wireless signal. If these values are low then this will explain why you have been losing connection with the device.

  • Can i use my new I pad with the Canon MX870 printer?

    Can I use a I PAD 2 with me Canon MX870 Printer?

The Canon MX870 is not on Apple's AirPrint list of supported printers:
    AirPrint basics
So you would have to find some Canon app or some third party app in the App Store to do some limited printing from iPad.

  • Can't find my printer from my MacBookPro. Canon MX870 connected via ethernet to my Airport Base station

I have a MacBookPro3,1. My Canon MX870 is connected to my Airport base station via ethernet. It was working fine until two days ago. I restarted my computer, the printer and the airport and router. Reinstalled the driver for the printer and even reset the airport. Best I can tell it's something with my MacBook. My girlfriend was over yestrday and she has a newer MacBookPro and I can find my printer fine on her MacBookPro but I can't find it at all on mine. I'm at a complete loss. Any thoughts or insight would be greatly appreciated.

I wonder if one of the “printing” plists has become corrupted. Find your preferences file in the library under your user name. Scroll down to the series of printer plists starting with “com.apple.print“. There are a series of them, even one specifically for the mx 870. You can delete a plist with relative impunity as they are rebuilt when you restart your MBP. I would delete 1st the one that has 870 in the name, put it in the trash, but don’t empty the trash,  and restart. If that doesn’t solve the problem you can delete others- like the “print add“ plist or print center plist. Restart after each deletion and see if that solves the problem. You can always drag  the deleted plists out of the trash  and put them back where they came from as long as you don’t empty the trash.
    Good Luck!

  • Printer communication error, canon mx870 prints one time then communication error on next print job

I have a canon mx870. It keeps sending a message that there is a communication error. I then re enter my network key and restart the printer and my macbook pro. Hi c,
There were some updates addressing printing issues. Run Software Update, update whatever's there, and see if that helps.

I have been having the same issue with the Canon iEPP app not detecting the printer using an iPhone 4S, 5S and iPad Air.  I was on the phone with Canon IT support and the devices and apps can communicate with the printer when I type in the printer IP address in the Safari browser.
I have Comcast Xfinity for interner and have a Linksys Wireless-G router.
I tried about 5 different free app which support my Canon MX870 printer and none can detect the printer.

  • HT4356 app for canon mx870 wireless printer to convert to air printer

Is there an app to enable a Canon MX870 Wireless Printer to be used as an Airprinter for IPad2

    Val85-
I suggest you look for a Canon App at the iTunes App store.  It will have limitations, but should get you printing.
There are other printing Apps with more features such as Print n Share or PrintCentral, but they can only be accessed from within other Apps that have the "Open In" option.  These include their own mail, browser, photo and text programs.  In other words, they do not provide true AirPrint capability.
Depending on your situation, a better option may be to run a program on your computer that will share its printer as AirPrint over WiFi.  Programs such as Printopia and FingerPrint can do that, and are reported to work well.  Your computer must be on and awake any time you want to print.  <Printopia for Macintosh> <FingerPrint for PC and Mac>

  • Help with Canon MX870 - scanner stopped working

    Hi,
I bought a Canon Pixma MX870 printer/scanner a month or so ago and it was working fine up till this week. I had installed the Canon software and ran the OS X Software updpate when setting it up.
All of a sudden last week I couldn't print. It kept saying the printer couldn't be found. So I downloaded the Apple Canon printer software and reinstalled it thinking it couldn't do any harm. The printer is working again. The scanner not so much. If I do manage to get it to work (either by using the scanner from System preference > Print/Fax > and choosing open scanner or by using the MP Navigator it typically now will only work 1 time. After that it says "scanner not found" and sometimes if I close and reopen the scanner from Print/Fax it says "trying to open scanner session".
I know the MX870 is connected to the network. The blue wifi light is lit, it shows in the router's list of connected devicies, it also shows in Safari's list of Bonjour Devices.
I need this machine to scan and play nice with OS X - I need to scan more than print.
I ran Disk Warrior, ran chrons to do maintenance and fix permissions etc. I tried deleting and re- adding the scanner. That didn't work and I had to restore it from backup.
Anyone have any ideas on what to do next?
    Thank you.

However, I went to take a screenshot and something very weird happened. It popped up a dialog box where the scanner was checked as shown in your screenshot with an 80.????? IP address (the ? are because I don't recall)
The 80 number would have been the MX870 wifi network address - not the IP address. The scanner selector tool does not show the device IP address, only the network address.
...asking if "Canon IJ Network Scanner Selector 2" could accept incoming connections from the network and there was a 3rd choice listing the scanner as "Canon MX870 series_3DXXXXX (where I am putting in Xs because I suspect it is a serial number).
Based on this I would guess that the firewall is enabled on your Mac and the prompt is to add an exception to for the networked MX870 (and the X's are the last digits of the wifi network address shown in the selector tool) so that communication can flow between both devices.
